I have been struggling this for almost 3 decades. Your videos are fantastic. I think I would learn more over a night of pints playing with you than I have learned since I was 14. In lieu of that, I will keep watching your vids. Thanks mate!
as i've progressed i've been struggling with this in various aspects of my shooting, much to the chagrin of my teams advice. this is the most concise explanation of the elements of spinning a cue and for this i'm deeply appreciative
for people struggling with this...you can look through the cue ball when using heavy side English and aim your tip at the edge of the object ball. if you pay attention to most of his strikes, his cue is aimed directly at the edge of the object ball. i found that this works exceptionally well when the object ball isn't too far away, and the shot is reasonably straight. the further the object ball, the more time the cue ball has to curve back. obviously, there's much more that goes into it but its decent starting point until you get a good feel for the deflection.
A very well done and compelling video. If the intent was to convince me of the utter hair pulling and mind numbing frustration of the game, it succeeded in spades. I would be breaking sticks, throwing balls through basement windows, and taking razor blades to the green felt. Life is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY too short for the frustration of pool.
I’m hoping to play snooker for the first time in about 25 years, just came across your channel a few days ago, not only do you explain things well you’re entertaining too. What a resource you/UA-cam are. My 85 year old dad is watching you too now in the hope he’ll beat me! Thank you for the videos!
I was addicted to snooker on 2018, and finally got back to it on quarantine. Loving the vids. Don't know if I'm the first one from my country, but greetings from Arequipa, Perú 🇵🇪
Hi man I am a big fan from Bosnia and Herzegowina and I found your lessons very usefull for me to learn to play snuker much better. Thank you and wish you all the best!
These videos are part of my Saturday morning routine now... cuppa tea and watch Break from Life around 9am... keep up the good work! Can’t wait to get back in a table.. James from Sunderland.
When I watch your videos I never expect how much detail you go into. Makes soo much sense. I know about putting side on but not to this extent. Very educational. Great channel.🤌🏻 Jordan From Bournemouth 🌊
FANTASTIC explanation of deflection! I've never played snooker but I have played quite a bit of American pool (9 ball, 8 ball, One Pocket, 14.1 Continuous/Straight Pool) but the idea is the same. Thank you for posting this. And for what it's worth, I'm in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
Don't get to play snooker here in the USA, but there is always alot of good fundamentals that apply to regular billiards as well. Your fan from El Paso, Tx USA.
I've been practicing this since few months ago because it's look amazing. Now I know how to hit the white ball to the right point to another ball. Thank you so much.
Great job explaining this. (And this still ignores the exacerbation of throw as people's hands get dirty (sweaty) and make the balls sticky) ... or in places which are really humid (much lower than your latitude. I learned in the 90s, before there was ANY info except books ... and gambling to see if you played as well as you thought you did. People today just do not realize that they have as much free info as a chick with DD's in a pool hall or a short skirt ... on the internet in a way that didn't exist even 15 years ago. Just Dave Alcatore and videos like accu-stats, etc. I have some videos of Efren, Alcano, Orcollo, Pagalayan playing the ghost on my videos. And again, good job explaining.
The 2nd from last one now makes so much sense, when you screw back and come off a cushion with spin. I'd have always just put bottom left instead of right 🤦♂️ great vid
Your content is great mate! When I learned to play snooker I was never taught but I just watched players in the snooker hall... So I learned to play with side as most players did. Fast forward and learning to play by calculating the angles it was like learning a new game lol
In opinion you learn all of this by the amount of time you practice and play the more you play or practice you will learn angles, spin, better stroke etc. Pool and snooker are pretty similar I am a pool player and the more you play you'll learn
Thanks bro. It’s the more you know. I’m starting my first snooker tournament at my local club and want to achieve something new. I’ve been playing for years and sort of cottoned onto how spin works but not as dynamic as this. I’ve subscribed as you’re very talented and very clear on your content, thank you. 🙏🏻
From Cork in Ireland. For the shot re-enactments of World Championship; would nominate Mark Williams deliberate deflection of the red off the black in the Saturday morning session against John Higgins.
Very interesting. I always had the intuition that you could affect the object ball and have used side spin for narrow shots, sometimes to great success. But it was so slight that I thought I could just be imagining it - now that I know it's real, I realize it's a great trick that can actually becomes useful quite often.
Well i have been watching the videos on spin for game improvement and it really helped me in Cue positioning.......... Thank You so much for game Knowledge ❤️ ❤️ From Pakistan
I came a cross watching this video by accident and just continued while I was doing my work. I was stunned at 7:06 cuz that's where I am 😂 great video btw 👍
Great video. I think potting balls with side spin is pretty tough to do it consistently. Unless the pot is incredibly easy i usually dont even botherattempting it. Its very useful though for swerves and escaping from snookers. I also potted an "impossible" black ball in a league pool match using side spin, leaving my opponent scratching his head (its easier using it in pool). So many professionals even are not even that good with side spin. Trump is by far the best ive ever seen. Kyren Wilson is also decent along with Ronnie and Shaun Murphy.
I love your channel and I learn a lot from watching your videos and my dream is to have a pool table to practise on what I learnt. Thanks a bunch! Love and Support from Cairo, Egypt 🇪🇬❤️
At 4:10 I'd say your table is rolling off, you can see the ball turning even when there is no side spin left. You can't really swerve a ball by putting on only side spin. For a swerve effect you need spin around the x-axis of the cue call (hitting the ball with the cue not level to the surface of the table). Side spin only applies rotation around the z-axis. There is something called "ball turn" which makes a ball turn to one side because of side spin but need loads of spin for that. Something you can't achieve by only striking the cue ball at a slow pace.
That in and out spin in between the balls is something ive never seen, thought you could only swerve one way to get out of a snooker.. Nah this video was sick, you look such a casual good player aswell
fantastic vid! Love this channel :) I am interested in how going off 3 cushions work, how bottom/top, power/compression of the cushion, side of multiple cushions and the nap of the cloth come together. Also, how this would apply where it is the object ball going off the cushions. Anyone point me to a thorough (like this vid) explanation of this please?
For those struggling with this, don't worry about. My advice would be just to practice yourself potting every ball with side. You'll soon learn how much the ball is thrown off (as mentioned a lot of variables: the type of wood the cue is made from, the type of tip, the weight of the cue, the thickness of the cue, the weight of the cue, the balls, the cloth, how hard you hit it, the type of ferrule and prob many more). However, once you've got it, it honestly becomes second nature. I don't even think about how much I'm aiming away when playing with side now, plus potting with tonnes of side is awesome
Heeeyyy from Mar del Plata, Argentina 🇦🇷 Love your channel and how well made your videos are, I've never played snooker but it's still really interesting
Definitely top 3 billiard educational site, love your videos, if you're ever coming to Orlando , Fl. you have a place to stay and you can teach me on my miniature 9' Diamond.
About your "better quality cue" mentioned at 2:15, can you explain what qualities in your opinion make for a better quality cue? Do you prefer a wider tip or more narrow tip? Rounded tip or more flat tip? How rough should the tip be? I don't see any chalks on the table, and I don't recall you chalking the tip before any of these shots, so how are you avoiding miscues?. How much does it matter how the stick feels in your hand -- e.g., weight, thickness, amount of tapering, and any finish on the wood to make it glide more smoothly over or through fingers?
This is one of the most helpful videos I've seen. I consider myself an intermediate player but Now I have some things to go practice until I know what I can do come in-game scenarios. (Tavernier, Florida)
After watching this I have come to the conclusion that to understand how snooker balls work you need a masters degree in snookerphysics
Or practice a lot.
Pretty much
or... you could get some tape, put it on the table in a straight line
shoot the ball and understand the deviation based on how you hit the ball
Any game you want to play at a higher level needs you to learn quite a bit of physics.
