I'm considering have weightloss surgery... I had my first visit with the nutritionist today... and I had my psych eval a little more than a week ago. My last visit with the nutritionist is on September 5th... and then I have to have a chest x-ray. I've also watched all the videos they've sent me... they really make everything seem so scary and the nutritionist made me nervous. I'm really trying to not want to back out because I've been big my entire life and my mom had me on sooo many different diets throughout my whole childhood... and as an adult, I've tried everything. I feel like this is the last resort... but I can't help but feel terrified. I'm afraid I'm going to die.. I'm afraid I'm going to not do anything right, like forget to take my vitamins and then get sick and die.. I'm afraid I'm going to be ugly after I lose the weight and then because of all the extra skin and flab and then my husband won't be attracted to me anymore.. I'm afraid I'm going to regret it later like my friend has... I'm afraid of a lot of things. I was told I have to be strictly sugar free... I'm afraid I may not be able to be "completely" sugar free and that would defeat the weight loss. Can I not do little to no sugar? I really want to do this... I feel I need to for my health and chronic pain. I went into this ready... but now after talking to the docs and nutritionist, watching the videos... I'm just left in fear and doubt. Do you have any advice?
@@felina6923 so in general i have no disagreement except the carbonation. Not the stretching but your more prone to ulcers after bariatric surgery and studies show carbonation increases acid reflux which erodes the lining of your stomach which causes ulcers which is the reason why they say no carbonated drinks 👍
These are not myths. I’m 20 years out & your content is dangerous to people who believe you. Those are not myths & your reasons are not true. You are not qualified to say all the things you saying and this video should be removed because people might believe the wrong things you are saying. I’m glad you didn’t suffer some of the things that others do suffer from but it doesn’t mean that they are myths.
100%. This is so wrong. I had bypass and THIS IS NOT RIGHT. She lost weight and all but after 2 years, you'd think there would be more success. Idk. Drs wouldnt recommend this shit if it weren't true. Dont fucking test your stomach. Dont test your health. Just fucking follow the rules.
They are myths...my dr and care team said that carbonated drinks will expand your stomach but your stomach will go back down to size. The problem is that they cause us pain
This is not my first abdominal surgery, so I can help explain, as my surgeon did, the gas thing. Yes, they pump your abdominal cavity full of gas to spread your organs apart so they can see between them and give them space to work. Because that gas is in between your organs, it sticks around for quite a while in your abdominal cavity. It is eventually all absorbed into your digestive tract through osmosis and will eventually leave your body through.... regular channels of being expelled. That is why Gas X is recommended. If you are feeling abdominal cramping, it is likely that the gas has finally been absorbed by the organs meant for such things and is trying to exit the body through the normal ... exists. And so Gas X can help with the cramping and bloating. And the body should be able to absorb about 50 to 6o grams of protein at a time.
THANK YOU. I'M TIRED OF PEOPLE ACTING LIKE THEY KNOW BETTER THAN THE DR. THEY DO NOT. THANK GOD I HAD A SURGEON THAT KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING AND THAT I'M NOT AN IDIOT ENOUGH TO JUST TAKE HER INFO LIKE SHE'S A PROFESSIONAL.
It’s odd because my doctor expressed that GasX won’t do anything to help with gas trapped by the CO2 the pump into you and that it only helps with intestinal gas, walking helps with CO2 gas pushed in you for surgery. The intestinal gas you pass after surgery is due to the anesthesia slowing your body down especially your digestive tract (also why you get constipated) and this is why they want you to pass intestinal gas after surgery to make sure you are not developing POI (post operative ileus). At the end of the day you ALWAYS want to follow your doctors advice. Just like our diets post op that vary so much from one doctor to the next, you always want to follow whatever directions YOUR doctor gives you regardless of the directions your friend may get for theirs. 🫶🏻👍🏻
I am 18 months Post op Gastric Sleeve & maintaining 82#. down. Thanks for this necessary info. Changing coffee making to Cold Brew helped me with acid intake reduction. Diluting carbonated drinks with ice, water or lemon helped conquer bubble bloat. Most of all, slowing down speed of intake for food & liquids was a good habit to make.
Thank you for this video. Gum, straws, and carbonated drinks were stressed as “no no’s” by my Dr and nutritionist; not because of stomach stretching but gas. I had sleeve surgery 5/23/23 and I’m learning that that list is a guideline and you really have to do things according to your body. So glad you popped up in my feed. I’ll be a new subbie 😊
Just had 6 month check up on Nov and all bloodwork was fine and progress/healing was fine as well. Starting to feel more like “new” self. Have really bad arthritis in my left hip and could not exercise/walk well enough to lose weight so I did surgery. Sooo glad I did. April 2024 will have total left hip replacement. Thank you for asking how I’m doing 😊💗
You should listen to your Dr. Not her. I had actual bypass. Not sleeve. I get what she's trying to do, but she's not fully correct. I don't appreciate that she says certain things the way she does. She is not a Dr and it's not true for me or anyone that's had the same surgery or sleeve and i know a lot.
Thank you 😊 I just listen but God, my body, and Dr are the ones I listen/pay attention to. You hear sooo much stuff on line and you have to be so careful. Thanks again for looking out 😉👍🏽
@@nettiewonlin1651 Nettie, I felt the same way as you at 2 days and wondered why the hell I did it, I promise you that it gets better. I'm guessing you've been told to walk to help with the gas pain, I also found something called Degas here in Australia helped me a lot. Maybe see if there's something suitable for you depending on your location? I hope you're okay since it was 3 days or so ago that you posted this.
@@SafinazHassan really good thank you.... I've had a dream run, I just have to get on top of the psychology of my eating to make sure I create life long habits.
This video is much appreciated! I've just started my journey to getting gastric bypass. I'm still several months away from even meeting with a surgeon, but your information has been much appreciated! I like the way you explain things. Definitely going to check out more videos!
This year I will celebrating my 11th year of my surgery. I've kept a 100 pound weight loss. I was successful because I did exactly what my surgeon said to do. And that was staying away from everything she says is okay to do. I'm addicted to food, diet soda, chewing gum and all the habits that make a compulsive over eater happy. Life style changes are a must and have to be done to be successful . Other wise why go through all of this!! The surgery is no joke!!
Yes! I couldn't agree more! I think some, actually a lot, of her advice is ill advised. She may mean well but at the same time misguiding patients with a very real disease, obesity, & so many of us have obvious unhealthy relationships with food. Also, another big reason they don't want you to have carbonation after gastric bypass surgery is because it will make you feel fuller. May I also add that diet drinks specifically are SO bad for your kidneys!!! Just don't even go there.
I am not giving advice, first of all, and I'm not saying you should just throw caution to the wind and do all of these things. I feel many people may need better listening and comprehension skills. I am specifically addressing myths, such as carbonation stretching your pouch. I'm not advocating for drinking a bunch of soda, guys and gals, and I'm certainly not saying not to listen to your DOCTORS. But some of the reasons people have given over the years not to do things are not exactly based in truth. Maybe don't drink carbonation, sure, but not because of a fear it will stretch your pouch because there really isn't scientific evidence for that.
Also, not to spam replies here, but you almost act as if I don't also suffer from the same very real disease and issues and hardships that come with it when I'm discussing this topic..?
You may not THINK you're giving advice & perhaps you should state "This is strictly from my experience & are my opinions. In no way should this be considered medical advice." But there are so many people out there that are hungry, even desperate for information, advice & support & I can assure you they will absolutely take the information from your video as advice. If you are referring to MY listening & comprehension skills they are working perfectly fine thank you. You are very defensive when someone disagrees or gives their opinion I've noticed throughout the comments. I hope you will take what I've suggested into consideration.
Actually, I assume the exact opposite about you because most of us who have had bariatric surgery suffer from life long effects due to bad eating habits, emotional eating, etc... Yes, there are some who are overweight due to illness but we .make up the majority of the patients & when you have this surgery which is HUGE, you need to look at it as a tool that can & will help change your life but you need to know that you will always battle this disease, unfortunately. Congratulations on your success!
Some of these are not myths, but for way different reasons than she describes….where is your information from? 1. Carbonation - this is because of ulcers being more common if you’ve had gastric surgery & consume carbonation. 2. Straws - this is because people usually consume more with a straw than with sipping naturally, therefore leading to increased calories if it’s a caloric beverage or just over-consumption. 3. Gum - this is because your body creates enzymes when you chew gum, and they can irritate the stomach. And if chewed on an empty stomach, can create worse feelings of hunger, leading to overeating. 5. Protein - the recommendation of 25-30g of protein at a time is because they want you spreading your protein consumption throughout the day and not consuming it all at once. It takes about an hour for your body to process 10g of protein. So stretch it out throughout the day. 8. Coffee - this is because consumption of caffeine can interfere with the absorption of several key vitamins and minerals. People who have had surgery cannot afford to lose those nutrients. 9. Exercise - I agree that you don’t have to live at the gym, but sedentary thin people also have health problems. You still need to be active for overall health. Please please please do your medical research from medical journals and research before touting even more myths online!
I don’t agree with your opinion on not needing Exercise totally. But I agree with everything else that you said. I believe Exercise were helping a long-term and overall health like you said. And also when it comes to weight loss is three factors nutrition, sleep and exercise. Thank you so much for your input on this topic.
Here's the thing..all the advice given by med team is to help us change our life style when it comes to food. To help us make better choices. And if we're able to follow the advice given, it gives us a better chance to KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF. When our stomach is 💯 healed..we can pretty eat and drink ANYTHING in smaller portions..but what will happen is we will keep eating the junk..and eventually our sleeve will grow into the stomachs we got rid of in the first place.
Carbonation in drinks is bad for calcium absorption and can cause brittle bones and teeth. Bariatric patients need to absorb as much of the nutrients as they can. This is a major reason why carbonation is to be avoided.
I'm not finding studies that indicate that, can you point me to the research? I'm finding a 2006 study often being cited that suggests phosphorus in colas may cause lower bone density in older women, but it's specific to colas and older women. I also see a link between caffeine and calcium absorption. I'm not finding anything that says carbonation itself inhibits calcium absorption.
That’s true I used to drink one liter of Diet Coke ,I had so much pain in my hips, until a doctor told my husband what happens to your bones ,I quit 30 years ago and I have no bone pains
@higurashianduminekoconnect1702 you would be able to drink beer eventually. Just wait til you are fully healed. Now should you drink beer? probably not due to the dietary guidelines recommended. The carbs and sugars would not be in your best interest.

Yes to all of these! I drink with a straw, coffee, overload protein, carbonated drink when nothing else is available, and celestial seasons zinger teas by the half gallon! Keep up the good work!
@@sylviaarambula3978 you really don’t know me! I said I only drink carbonated soda when nothing is available. Tooth sensitivity causes the need for a straw! I think that 150 lbs of weight loss is serious!
Everyone's journey is different, and everyone's situation is different. And I hardly think a carbonated beverage (which could just be sparking water by the way..) is the end-all-be-all of our surgery success. We are all in this together doing the best we can, so maybe let's be a bit more supportive of each other, eh?
Great information here! When I was doing Weight Watchers, they told us that with a low fat diet, you will lose hair. They recommended 1 teaspoon of healthy oil every day. I mixed it in with my scrambled eggs in the morning. Also, a homemade dressing for salads is ideal.
Gas X works. Whether you believe it or not. Saying from personal experience. Not placebo, not walking. It really does work. I’m also a surgical assistant and I’ve seen it too many times. It does work. Period.
⏩ *The issue with protein:* It's actually all about *the kidneys.* The average body absorbs protein at a rate of roughly 20-25 grams per hour. *Any excess protein NOT absorbed* goes straight to the kidneys. *Excess protein over-taxes kidney filtration.* Have you ever eaten a big steak *and then felt really tired, or wonky, afterward?* It's the kidneys overworking to process (filter) that extra protein and that can eat up your energy. *Over-taxing the kidneys repeatedly over a long period of time can damage kidneys.* *It's the same with vitamins.* Ever take a multi-vitamin with like 400% of the RDA of some vitamins or minerals? Notice your pee is bright yellow? You were taking in *more vitamins and minerals than your body could absorb.* And *it's hard on your kidneys* (which works with the liver to filter ingested substances.) Hope that helps. *The CONCERN with repeated excess protein* ingestion over a long duration is actually about *kidney damage,* and not muscle synthesis. This concept is not new, *nor unique to weight loss surgery.* And yes, you are exactly right: *Protein absorption is OPTIMAL when spread out over the day.* That will also keep your energy levels more consistent throughout the day. *Thank you for all of your great videos.* They've been very informative and interesting. *Congratulations on your tremendous weight loss success!* 🌷
It's hard to reply to this comment because you did try to do it very kindly and respectfully, but the fact remains that I cannot corroborate any of the "facts" you put here through any reputable studies or sources, nor did you cite any of your sources in any way. To say that being tired after eating a big steak is because it taxes your kidneys and causes kidney damage over time is not bound by any science I've ever read. There is a link between protein and kidney damage...for people who already have kidney disease. In fact, many of the studies I read indicated there is no evidence to support excess protein can lead to kidney damage in healthy individuals without preexisting kidney disease. It seems like you are taking a lot of talking points that aren't supported with science and applying it to bariatric surgery patients that are in a totally different realm than what you're even trying to argue - taking higher dosage multivitamins and eating extra protein is recommended by EVERY bariatric surgeon and dietitian because of our unique situation, needs, and anatomy. For a normal person to do this may not be ideal, but for someone who has undergone bariatric surgery, I'm going to rely on the advice of surgeons, dietitians, and scientific studies that support what my particular body needs to thrive. And I don't even want to begin to unpack the idea that more than 20-25 grams of protein per hour damages your body and your kidneys need to filter that out, when protein is used for SO MANY of your body's processes. Thank you for the comment and your perspective, but I don't think it applies here.
@enlightened one. I agree 100%! Thank you for posting this! So true and it’s dangerous to give false information based on google studies. This girl needs to go back to school before advising people.
The coloration is B2, which kidneys send through. Very common but not a sign you're over supplementing. Get tested for B vitamins on cellular level, not just blood test. Labs should be done every 3 months first year, then 6 months thereafter.
Coffee is not recommended because it depletes B Vitamins not the diuretics issue! Check with a nutritionist. We usually fight B1 and B12 deficiencies so I must correct you there!!!
Many people go by their own experience and can for some reason feel the need to mock/dismiss things others have experienced or worry about experience and sort it in as ”myths”. I’m not a medical doctor but anyone who has chewed gun will know you will swallow more air while chewing gum and you will swallow a bit more gum while drinking from a straw too. If you have more limited space after a surgery of this kind, why waste space on swallowed air?! I study at university and if I had delived anything in this manner for my exams, the professors would not allow me to pass my exams. Some parts are bordering gaslighting in this video and I say this having studied psychology at uni. / Scandinavian
Oh boy, I'm 10 years out from the sleeve, and I have had acid reflux from day 1. Now I have extreme feflux now because of a hiatal hernia. I am waiting to have Roux en Y surgery to fix my refux issue that was caused by the sleeve. I can't wait for the repair of my hernia and the fix to my reflux. It has been miserable for me.
I love how you addressed all these myths! I was only able to get my water in by using a straw. I did the gas x thing to & then it hit me…it’s gas from the surgery how is gas x gonna help that?! Lol I had an aha moment on that. Keep spreading the truth & love girl. 💕
Just a week post op and I'm SO HAPPY I found your channel!❤❤ I was miserable thinking about never being able to chew gum again. 😕 I'll keep healing slowly and reintroduce it later down the road. ❤
As for the protein thing, I watched a Dr. Alvarez video that was just posted (May 9, 2024) where he said 'normal' people should have 1 gm of protein per kilogram of your 'healthy' body weight, but that those who've had weight loss surgery should aim for 1.5-2 grams of protein per kilogram of our 'healthy' weight (I'm assuming he means our healthy weight according to BMI). We need the extra protein to protect our muscles when we're intaking such low calories and losing weight quickly. He did say it's possible to overdo it, but when you think about it, 2 gms per kg of healthy body weight means we can safely have quite a lot. I never heard anyone talking about the actual amounts before, so I just wanted to add it here.
Everyone can go back to eating or drinking whatever after 1yr or 18mon after you has gastric sleeve….. you have to be careful and not eat unhealthy because ur stomach is so small and u need to stay hydrated and eat ur vitamins basically. I am going through with this surgery and I have a fantastic weight loss Dr! I’ve had a hysterectomy where they put a lot of air in my stomach so I’m thinking it’s pretty much like that may be a little worse….
Hi Stephanie, I enjoyed your video. I have to say, most women who put out post-surgical stories are mostly laced with scare tactics to dissuade people from getting the surgery. It is quite refreshing to watch your video which dispels most of the myths. I would like to show you my take on the subjects you brought up and bring up a couple of things you didn't mention. I am curious about your input here. I am 7 months post-op Gastric bypass and down 110 pounds. Only 30 pounds to go and I feel great! I'm from Canada so my surgery was performed at St. Joeseph's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Gastric bypass is covered financially under our health care system. Using a Straw? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery Chewing Gum? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery GasX? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery Firming Creams? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery Acid Reflux? They mentioned it but mine was 99% eliminated by the surgery. What little I have left is hardly worth mentioning and certainly doesn't require any meds. 25 grams of Protein? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic. If anything, they are very adamant about getting 60-80 grams of protein per day. Hair loss? I haven't lost a single strand of hair. Yes, they mentioned it and they assured me if I lost any hair that it would grow back after a few months. A non-issue for me. No coffee? You're right. They said no more caffeine as it can irritate your stomach lining. I don't drink coffee or tea but I drink lots of diet Coke and it doesn't affect me in any negative way that I notice post-surgery. Yes, I know diet Coke is not a good beverage to ingest but it's my only vice. I have never smoked, did drugs or drank alcohol. Never been high or drunk. Ibuprofen? They said no more Advil/Motrin for the rest of my life as it can cause ulcers post-surgery. Acetaminophen is the alternative they suggested. I only take Tylenol now so it wasn't a big change. Other than the first week post-op, I've only taken Tylenol once for a bad headache that I brought on myself through too much sun exposure. Carbonation: You're right. You won't pop any staples or stitches. Just burp! 7 Months post-op and I've never had a problem with drinking pop. They told me to wait until the 5th week post-op until I could drink pop again. They did try to wean me off pop weeks before the surgery. I told them what they wanted to hear but I never altered my pop habits pre-surgery but I did stop drinking pop post-surgery for the 5 weeks as I didn't want to intervene in the healing process. Spot Reduce Fat: They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic. But I happen to know you're right. If anything, it may be worse for us post-op patients as the excess skin we want to lose isn't possible to remove by any method other than surgery. For me, I tend to lose weight from higher to lower. So, when you said women tend to lose weight from their breasts first? That makes perfect sense as they contain high amounts of fatty tissue and tend to be higher in your body. So, when I lose weight. I tend to look proportionately worse. When my chest shrinks by 3 inches but my waist only lost one inch, I look worse proportionately. Eventually it catches up, but it sucks at the time. Walking immediately post-op. I didn't walk at all the first day after I woke up. I walked once the next day and they discharged me about an hour later in good standing. You didn't mention anything about multivitamins and calcium supplements. I'm curious if they mentioned this subject to you. They told me they would be a life-long requirement post-surgery. I can tell you/your audience, it's probably not true. It's been well known for a few years now that synthetic vitamins have negligible effects on us humans. All they do is produce expensive and golden coloured urine lol. Calcium supplements might be a wise thing to take, maybe more so for women, but I don't bother with either multivitamins or calcium supplements and I feel great. You didn't mention snacks in between meals. The clinic insists they are important. Snacks slow down my weight loss and sometimes halt weight loss. When I snack, I lose about 1 pound per week. When I don't snack, I lose 3-4 pounds per week. I don't snack, I've lost tons of weight and I feel great. I'm curious about your experience with snacking. Stopping drinking 30 minutes before and up to 2 hours after eating. Did they tell you that? I don't bother with that advice. I know they are trying to prevent "dumping syndrome" with that advice. For me, I simply listen to my body. I drink before, during and after a meal and I have no ill effects because of it. I'm curious why did you had your surgery in Mexico? Are you from the states and it was cheaper to have it done in Mexico? Where did you go for your post-op care? How much weight have you lost and how much more do you want to lose? Were you happy with your Mexican experience? How much did it cost? Would you do it again down there?
I use supplements specifically for WLS (BariFusion is the brand). They are made to ensure absorption. I agree that the over the counter supplements are minimally effective.
I’m 10 years out from my full Ruon-Y gastric by pass…. lost 110 pounds and now going through menopause… gained 10 EXTRA pounds!!!! Getting mad about that!!! lol I have an iced coffee every morning… but I DO still refuse to drink out of a straw and rarely do I have pop… if I would it would be regular pop….no diet. Anyone going into this surgery I wish you well.. and she’s right about the gas pain….it hurts but in the end… its all worth it… I would do it again!!!!!
I've heard that's super common! I was kind of hoping it would bother me so I never have an excuse to go back, but most carbonated things don't even really taste good to me anymore so it ends up working out fine.
I know this video is a year old, but it’s the most sound and balanced view I’ve seen. Thank you for this information. Looking forward to my surgery in a few weeks
I wish I could have watched this as a live stream and had some back and forth. Yes, the 80-20 rule is very true for weight loss. The reason why exercise is stressed for those who are undergoing, or have undergone, weight loss surgery is (according to the literature given to me for the program I'm in) for the same reason we're asked to make protein such a big part of our diet--to protect our muscles, because the body wants to go there first for energy unless we 'force it' to go to fat instead.
I keep asking myself, if this operation is a lifestyle change, why am I doing the op? What is the op doing that I can’t? Do I need half my stomach removed to prevent me from eating the wrong foods especially since I don’t really have a problem with portion control. So many questions…. 😞
As far as loose skin goes, keep in mind that we don’t “lose” the actual fat cells. They are permanent until they are surgically removed. We deplete our fat stores, yes, but they are forever. It makes sense that we would have “loose skin” purely because we have the cells still.
You are operating under a myth! It leads eventually to weight gain! Been there, thought that too...I gained weight! You are intaking Maltodextrine, which has a glycemic index of 110! Straight Sugar is only Glycemic Index of 60.
The gum, straw & carbonation is all air related because it adds pressure and causes a ton of discomfort and oftentimes people don’t eat well when they’re uncomfortable
I mean this with as much love and respect as I can - I'm not sure you're fully listening to what's being said. I said exactly that - air intake can make people very uncomfortable and bloated. The myth is that it stretches your stomach. Same with your comment about protein; what I say is what seems to be supported by BioLayne as well, and in the video I linked in your comment, he even calls it a myth himself.
@@1FatBeet super awkward i agree. you also said the myth was never using straws, drinking carbonated beverages or chewing gum. Your myth should’ve been “chewing gum stretches the stomach.” Not being able to chew gum after surgery isn’t a myth it’s a reality for a lot of people. Lmfao check the attitude next time expert.
thanks for this video! my surgery is next month and I'm excited and nervous! do you have any broths/snacks/drinks that you really like for pre & post-op?
Just a little tidbit here…..because it tastes good to you before surgery, doesn’t mean it will after surgery! I can’t tolerate anything with a sweet flavor ( skinny syrups ) now and some brands and flavors of protein drinks do not taste 👅 good to me anymore! Don’t buy a lot until you have tried it post op.
I agree with @dbl5454 on this one - don't stock up on too much for post-op because things definitely taste different. For example, a year+ post-op now, I can handle a Gatorade Zero but right after surgery they tasted horrible and all I could taste was the salt. I also have a HUGE aversion to broth post-op and even the thought of some of the things I had pre-surgery will make me queasy. Some things I have always enjoyed personally though are Light & Fit Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Premier Protein, and Pho broth is VERY flavorful if you're on the clear liquid stage. No dairy pre-op but I ate a TON of Jello, eggs, and bowls of things like broccoli or brussel sprouts because you can have as much of that as you want pre-op and it helped keep me full. I have some pre-op videos on the channel, too, if you're looking for food ideas!
I don't have any research to support either of these concerns, but I can say that the vast majority of people I see after surgery look younger, not older. Even if there's some slight skin drooping, most people seem to age backwards a bit. As for skin, I haven't heard that one yet but my skin personally has never been better. I think part of that is because I'm way more hydrated now after surgery than I ever was before.
Straws and carbonation won’t do anything but give gas. I had gastric bypass in 2012. Didn’t touch soda for over 5 years until I got pregnant. Pepsi was my only craving. About 6 months of pregnancy I was drinking a super big gulp everyday with a straw. 12 years after surgery I’ve kept off 200 pounds and can still only eat 4-5 bites of food and I’m full
My understanding is, as you say, it has to do with comfort, especially right after surgery when the stomach is still healing. And with a lot of these things - carbonation, using straws, chewing gum, etc, I have heard a bariatic surgeon recently say that it is because of the extra air intake making you feel bloated and uncomfortable before your stomach is healed, but you can reintroduce them down the road. So, though this video was posted a couple of years ago, everything you're saying still holds true. Thanks for educating those (like me) in the research phase.
Then why would the surgeon tell you to buy Gas x to have on hand after surgery? What are you basing your information on? Your experience or actual medical knowledge?
I am almost 19 years post op. I have kept off all the weight. If you are compliant, then the surgery will work. There are things I can’t do still, 19 years later, will still make me sick. So yes some of what she is saying is true. I’m an OG so ask me.
Yes, it will cause weight gain because of the empty calories plus it’s just not recommended ever. Why her the surgery done if you are going to just drink soda? You know what I mean? It’s a lifestyle change.
Also, why have the surgery if I'm just going to have soda again? Because the surgery saved my freakin' life and quality of life? Because I can go on a hike with my dog without wanting to kill myself, but maybe once a week drink a diet Mt. Dew because I'm still allowed to experience eating and drinking things I enjoy without being an utter failure of a human in some random internet person's eyes? The world is not as black-or-white/ all-or-nothing as so many people like to make it seem. This is complicated and not an easy fix. Having a diet root beer instead of reaching for a whisky is an option I choose that you apparently will never understand.
Never told not do these things because sleeve would stretch but for medical or comfort reasons from surgeon. Gas-x is commonly suggested by doctors after you’ve had any surgery that involves being npo ( not eating). I hope no one takes this as actual medical advice, please follow your doctors instructions, not people, pretending to be a medical experts.
I never discuss how much protein someone should consume, that is up to their medical teams. You comment about people following the advice of their medical team but seem to disregard the fact that every surgeon and surgical team recommends a high protein diet after surgery... I hope you leave this comment on all bariatric videos. All of the studies I've read link kidney function and high protein with people who already have kidney disease and as far as I have read there is limited evidence to support that high protein is bad for your kidneys if you are a normal, healthy individual. That being said, I'm just a person doing research. But I would not exactly call this dangerous...that's a bit excessive don't you think?
my dietician told me to quit drinking carbonated sodas because they make you feel bloated shes right because after i would drink one i always felt bloated and i always blamed it on something else since i stopped drinking them i feel a whole lot better.
The straws have nothing to do with air intake… It has to do with drinking too much too fast. You can fill your stomach very quickly without realizing it, especially in the beginning. But I do know plenty of people who are eventually able to handle a straw…
Drinking during a meal should be the big no-no! It causes more food to flush through and can lead to unintentional overeating. Diet drinks are not good for us. They trick the brain into thinking sweets are ingested and fat store mechanisms activate. I am 15 years out and can tell you diet drinks are a trap!!!
Kaiser told us no coffee because it can cause ulcers according to them. This makes me so sad because I’m a big coffee person. I was told that decaf is ok.
Just had bypass surgery and none of these so called myths did my surgeon say were absolutes. They recommended these for best results. I was specifically told Gas-X would not help gas pains. So if your surgeon is telling you these are absolute no's then i recommend finding a new surgeon. But these things you are calling "myths" are things that if you want the best results are highly recommended.
I’m pre-op and i really appreciate this! I have heard many of these, and you are helping to dispel my fears! Also, love the top, can you tell me about it?
Thank you so much! And the top is a hand-me-down I got (as a lot of my clothes are these days haha). The tag says it's Ann Taylor - it looks a little similar to this one: www.anntaylor.com/refined-stretch-wrap-top/586812?skuId=32790818&defaultColor=2222&catid=cata000010&selectedColor=9224
I have, and for the most part they don't bother me if I don't drink them too fast. If I do drink them too fast, I get bloated easily and it makes my tummy feel really full, but I haven't personally experienced any pain or discomfort. I have a very VERY low desire to drink them anymore, though, which is strange but welcome, so I rarely drink them anymore at all.

I’m glad you didn’t suffer some of the things that others do suffer from but it doesn’t mean that they are myths.
i love this video! i had gastric bypass surgery close to 6 yrs ago, started at 402 am down to 147 have kept the weight off, best decision ever!
Always go with what your surgeon and nutritionist say…. Not some random person in the internet.
I agree! This information is wrong! These are not myths.
This video is full of shiit. 100%
Sort of like when you get a colonoscopy?
I am 18 months
Post op Gastric Sleeve & maintaining 82#. down. Thanks for this necessary info. Changing coffee making to Cold Brew helped me with acid intake reduction. Diluting carbonated drinks with ice, water or lemon helped conquer bubble bloat. Most of all, slowing down speed of intake for food & liquids was a good habit to make.
Thanks so much, and congrats on your success! That's fantastic!
How is everything now?
Thank you 😊
I just listen but God, my body, and Dr are the ones I listen/pay attention to. You hear sooo much stuff on line and you have to be so careful. Thanks again for looking out 😉👍🏽
3 days post op here and the gas is starting to subside, along with the pain. I can't wait for the puree stage and free drinking!!! :D
I’m 2days in and I regret it I hate gas /pain
It’s that Bad??
@@nettiewonlin1651 Nettie, I felt the same way as you at 2 days and wondered why the hell I did it, I promise you that it gets better. I'm guessing you've been told to walk to help with the gas pain, I also found something called Degas here in Australia helped me a lot. Maybe see if there's something suitable for you depending on your location? I hope you're okay since it was 3 days or so ago that you posted this.
How are you now?
Six days from surgery! Thanks so much for all the information! You look beautiful! 💕💜💕
Thank you so much!! 🥰😳
Thanks for the information. I just had gastric bypass 4 days ago and the information is good to have for the future.
I think it's cool that me and hundreds of other ppl have the same scars
Am I the only one looking at the food slide show in the background? I didn't hear a word she said, I gotta rewatch now
you are way smarter than the average beet, i'm so glad to have stumbled upon this video
Thank you for doing all the research. I’m still pre-op and hungry for information. I’m glad I just found your channel.
You are so welcome!
@1FatBeet, what about beer?
@higurashianduminekoconnect1702 you would be able to drink beer eventually. Just wait til you are fully healed. Now should you drink beer? probably not due to the dietary guidelines recommended. The carbs and sugars would not be in your best interest.
Same. I'm doing a sleeve but currently on the pre-op diet and curious about the after effects.

Yes to all of these! I drink with a straw, coffee, overload protein, carbonated drink when nothing else is available, and celestial seasons zinger teas by the half gallon! Keep up the good work!
Thank you!!
I don't think U were really serious of the life change waight loss surgery cuz if u were U would not b drinking carbonated sodas or drinks lol ugh
Thank You for being so supportive, helpful and positive !!! ❤
Period.
I'm glad it worked for you, finding comfort after surgery is all that really matters in the end!
I’m very late to the party, but thanks for alleviating my worries. Nicolette gum is literally my favourite pastime
Just don't swallow it 😉
⏩ *The issue with protein:*
It's actually all about *the kidneys.* The average body absorbs protein at a rate of roughly 20-25 grams per hour. *Over-taxing the kidneys repeatedly over a long period of time can damage kidneys.*
*It's the same with vitamins.* Ever take a multi-vitamin with like 400% of the RDA of some vitamins or minerals? Notice your pee is bright yellow? You were taking in *more vitamins and minerals than your body could absorb.* And *it's hard on your kidneys* (which works with the liver to filter ingested substances.)
Hope that helps.
@@1FatBeet Respectfully, a simple Google search will source all of the information. All the best to you. You are doing great! 🌷
Um... As a Gastric Bypass patient myself, listen to your Dr. Not her.
I can't even begin to explain why half of what she says isn't true.
Thank you! I also drink MUCH more by using a straw. Once I realized it's okay to do, it was a game changer for me.
My team said it was OK to use a straw but that there may be some discomfort. I start my pre-op diet soon. Just starting to learn post-op things.
Just a week post op and I'm SO HAPPY I found your channel!❤❤ I was miserable thinking about never being able to chew gum again. 😕 I'll keep healing slowly and reintroduce it later down the road. ❤
Gas pain... walk it off, that's what I was told. I had to have an apronectomy for my skin. No issues with having coffee.
Absolutely adore you. Girl you know your stuff. You are pinpoint on the way you explain. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Stephanie,
I enjoyed your video.
They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery
Chewing Gum? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery
GasX? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery
Firming Creams? They didn't mention this one at the bariatric clinic or post-surgery
Acid Reflux?
I really appreciate the insight. Thank you
It’s unreal how more informative you are than most surgeons that have UA-cam channels.
100% agree!!!
I totally agree with you!
She's informative. But not all correct. I'm a Gastric Bypass patient too. Listen to a real dr. Not her.
I’m 10 years out from my full Ruon-Y gastric by pass…. lost 110 pounds and now going through menopause… gained 10 EXTRA pounds!!!! Getting mad about that!!! lol
I have an iced coffee every morning… but I DO still refuse to drink out of a straw and rarely do I have pop… if I would it would be regular pop….no diet. Anyone going into this surgery I wish you well.. and she’s right about the gas pain….it hurts but in the end… its all worth it… I would do it again!!!!!
Yuuuup. Busting all the myths. For me, personally, I can't handle carbonation because it's painful but everyone is different.
Thank you for your info
I’m going y do my surgery soon
I’m scare but people like you encourage me to do it and not to lose more time ❤️
My dietician said that we cannot process more than about 40 grams at a meal. Everyone is different she said, but that is the general rule.
Thank you for this video. It helps me better understand what my clients have went through and are going through.
I keep asking myself, if this operation is a lifestyle change, why am I doing the op? What is the op doing that I can’t? Do I need half my stomach removed to prevent me from eating the wrong foods especially since I don’t really have a problem with portion control. So many questions…. 😞
I feel exactly the same. I am 5 days pre-op and I still feel like I should have been able to do the changes on my own
I'll listen to what my diatician and my surgeon they both know me health wise
Yes yes yes to all of this 🙌🏻 The GasX is a personal pet peeve myth I have, it makes me irrationally angry lol.
It's frustrating! I understand why it started but keeping it going is just unhelpful. SO many people recommend Gas-X as a must-have.
It works, so…🤷🏻♀️
Gas x worked wonders for me! Pre and post op
That's good! I'm glad it worked for you because any gas relief during that time is 💯!
As always, excellent content. Delivered with style. :)
Thank you so much 🥰
As far as loose skin goes, keep in mind that we don’t “lose” the actual fat cells. They are permanent until they are surgically removed. We deplete our fat stores, yes, but they are forever. It makes sense that we would have “loose skin” purely because we have the cells still.
Really enjoyed this video! Made me feel a lot better about everything you talked about!
Thank you, I'm so glad it was helpful!
If the surgery is ESG, the gas is pumped into the stomach, not the abdominal cavity. The entire procedure is endoscopic.
I drink sugar free soda and no problems ❤ ty for this video!!! Also used straw since day 2 after surgery LOL everyone is different
And you’re dead wrong on the protein front. Just check biolayne who has a PhD in nutrition.
Well this is super awkward, because he says what I was saying? ua-cam.com/video/KgzovPmiP0A/v-deo.html
@@1FatBeet you watched that video and thought you said the same thing he did? LMFAO
New subscriber thank you I’m considering the bypass surgery & appreciate the info
thanks for this video! my surgery is next month and I'm excited and nervous! do you have any broths/snacks/drinks that you really like for pre & post-op?
@@1FatBeet Thank you soo much for the suggestions & advice! my pre-op diet starts in two days!
@@1FatBeet
Very helpful and I’m almost 8 years out Thank you again
My worries for surgery is looking older. And my skin drying out.
I have liked and subscribed to your channel!! So much information. Thank you
My understanding is, as you say, it has to do with comfort, especially right after surgery when the stomach is still healing.
The gas-x one has always cracked me up.
You look great! Keep up the good work!😊
I agree on almost everything
BUT the calorie delete is a massive boost to cutting those tough lbs. Don’t deplete yourself.
These videos are helping me so much!!!
Thank you, I'm so glad!!
TAKE VITAMINS!!! You were not educated. Wow. This video is insulting
Excuse me? I have several videos about the importance of taking vitamins... that's not what this video is about?
Is it true that you can not take ibuprofen or smoke after bypass surgery? If so, do you know why?
the fact that ppl always think that when u do it ur not gonna think of food ever again i annoying
even after 3 weeks of the sugary i still crave stuff
Thankyou, great to have some down to earth advise.
Your video was very helpful thank you
My surgeon told me number 1. He straight up told me no carbonated beverages after. saying it would stretch my stomach and cause weight gain again
Yes, it will cause weight gain because of the empty calories plus it’s just not recommended ever. Why her the surgery done if you are going to just drink soda? You know what I mean? It’s a lifestyle change.
I'd like to point out that "carbonated beverages" doesn't only mean full sugar soda, as you are implying.
Not pretending, and not giving medical advice. But thank you for your comment and I appreciate your opinion 😊
Thank you 😊 this video was so informative ❤
Excess protein gets excreted by the kidneys. Too much and you can get kidney stones. Please take care everyone.
The gasx one KILLS me.
Great video thanku for making it 🎉❤
Fantastic video!
Thank you!!
I lost over half my hair and only a little grow back. Also wrongly diagnosed as i now know i have Lipedema and gbp does not help at all.
This videos is based on scientific medical reasearch studies. ❤
Kaiser told us no coffee because it can cause ulcers according to them. This makes me so sad because I’m a big coffee person. I was told that decaf is ok.
I had coffee from my 5th day. My surgeon said it was OK. I had 0 issues so far and I am 2 months post opp
Ok so I just had surgery 3 days ago had the sleeve done I'm having a tuff time drinking it hurts will that part fade away ? That air hurts 😫
Yes! It's tough at first for a while, but I can drink water normally now 🙂
Thanks for your video!!!❤
What about using an eliptic after surgery to supplement walking outside?
Had it in 2010 and still vomit. Can’t eat anything. Worst thing I ever did
Just started and the walrus mustache and beanie 😍😍😍😍😍 gosh I miss that show
It was SUCH a good show!
Girrrrrl you look so good!
What coffee creamer is everyone using other than premiere shakes ???
Use a sugar free coffee creamer! You aren't limited to having to use a protein drink. You can also use skim milk or almond milk.
Me me me to the gym !! I love exercise no matter what ❤️👍
Thanks for the clarification
You're welcome!
You are the best!!
I’m getting the sleeve done in a few months. I want to lose fat not weight
Have you had fizzy drinks since your surgery? If so, how did it make you feel?
Thank you,
I have, and for the most part they don't bother me if I don't drink them too fast. If I do drink them too fast, I get bloated easily and it makes my tummy feel really full, but I haven't personally experienced any pain or discomfort. I have a very VERY low desire to drink them anymore, though, which is strange but welcome, so I rarely drink them anymore at all.
I’ve lost more hair than I have weight I would not recommend surgery
Your voice is sooo 🌹 lovely.
Rrguarding coffee. My primarysaid cyou can regularly count your first 3 cups each day as tour fluid intake and after that no
THANK YOU ❤ I NEEDED THIS , CHRIST BLESSINGS TO YOU 😊I'M NEW HERE & ADORE YOUR SPACE.
