Food Visuals and Portions after WLS // How much CAN and SHOULD you eat? | My Gastric Bypass Journey

  • You will see a lot of information out there on how much people are eating after surgery, and whether or not it's "okay." But a lot of times everyone talks about this stuff in ounces. What does that actually look like, and what are portion sizes actually like after bariatric surgery? I put together a few examples to show what visually to expect with smaller meals and a smaller tummy post-op, and how your plate might look after surgery.
    I had RNY Gastric Bypass on December 1, 2020 at Mexico Bariatric Center in Tijuana Mexico with Dr. Rodriguez Lopez.
    If you're interested in the footage I took on the trip and in the hospital, you can watch my Travel & Surgery Vlog here: • Weight Loss Surgery in...

    This is an interesting upload to watch. On Thursday just gone, I had surgery from complications from my roux- en- Y surgery almost 2 and a half years ago. To cut a long story short, the surgeon (who did my initial surgery), told me I had stretched my pouch 80-100mls (80-100mg) when it should only be at 30-40mls; 40mls is about the size of one small hard boiled egg. He told me, with each meal, I should only be eating 30 - 40mls and then having protein shakes throughout the day, even 2 years out. I was mortified. After I had had my initial surgery, I saw a dietician for over 1 year post op, and she never told me this information. Don't be like me and stretch the pouch (that was not what my emergency surgery was for but it was done by the same surgeon who did the roux-en-Y).

    Great video! 10 months post-op from VSG and recently hit my goal. I'm considering trying for another 5-10 pounds in the new year just to firm up a bit, but I've decided to eat at maintenance calories through the holidays to give my brain and body a little break. That said, I've been a little worried that some days I can eat a little more than I could in the past (i.e. some days I can finish 7-8 ounces at a sitting instead of 5-6), and your reassurance that I'm still within "normal" parameters was helpful. Thanks for these videos--there's lots out there for folks planning for surgery or in the first few months post-op, but not so much for those who are a little further out, and starting to shift from the rapid weight loss phase to exploring sustainable approaches to maintenance.

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  Рік тому +2

      Maintenance is a whole new beast and so many of us are used to always "dieting" and in the weight loss phase that switching over to maintaining and not actively trying to lose can be such a different and tough change. I hope to keep adding my voice to experiences with what it's like years after surgery as so many people kind of phase out after that point.

    5 weeks post RNY and I get worried when I can eat what I have measured out. Like am I even supposed to be eating that much. I need to check my papers, but I just know that the protein needs to be 3 ounces. What is everything else supposed to be? Like veggies or fruit, healthy fats and starch? I see my dietician on the 5th. I definitely get restriction faster on different foods than other foods and sometimes when I eat, I get sick of what I'm eating and call that meal done. Lol it's for sure a learning experience.

      This is why I always end my videos telling everyone to make sure to look at the big picture. Losing 12 lbs. in a month is phenomenal. Losing 76.2 lbs. in six months?! That's amazing! That's an average of almost 13 lbs. per month! Forgive me if I'm being too forward, but why do you not think that that's a good amount of weight loss? When people are looking into fad diets and advertisers are shoving information in your face on why you want to choose their service, they advertise losing 10 lbs. a month and everyone blows their mind. Yet us bariatric patients are not okay with 10-15 lbs. a month, even though it's way above average to lose that amount of weight per month. The CDC recommends losing 1-2 lbs. per week for healthy, steady weight loss which is only 4-8 lbs. a month compared to the 12-13 lbs. you're losing. Take a breath and try to look at the big picture on how far you've come. I know it's so difficult and I've been there, but all you'll do is stress yourself out and make yourself really upset over something that is worth celebrating and being proud. At 6 months I started putting more variation on my plate and eating more veggies because I was also tired of protein-everything and I really missed vegetables. Always prioritize the protein, but start to branch out with fruits and veggies and other whole foods to get a more varied diet and maybe that will help the monotony. You've got this, I say all of this with love because you are doing GREAT, you just need to see what I see! 💗💗

Do I wish I've lost more yes, but 80lbs is still incredible. :) Try not to compare yourself to others! ❤

    So, you’re going by weight of food and not volume? I’m doing by volume, as I’ve been advised. I can’t imagine eating the amount of food you are showing. I haven’t been able to find a dr or dietitian that recommends measuring by weight. Can you help me understand this?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  10 місяців тому +1

      My understanding is that volume is a lot harder to measure accurately between different foods. For example, a cup of yogurt is very different from a cup of shredded chicken breast. Think of baking recipes where the most accurate way to follow the recipe is by weighing out your ingredients because volume is not very accurate and can depend on how much things are packed in or how it settles in the measuring cup. I've not personally seen many recommendations for measuring by volume, and my surgical team has always recommended by weight. When it comes to "not imagining eating the amount of food I'm showing," that is highly dependent on not only what stage you're at/how long since surgery, and honestly also depends on each individual as well.

      I think that might depend on how far out from surgery you are and exactly what is in the juice/smoothies. I would talk to your surgery team or doctor to be sure - too soon after surgery, you want to avoid anything with too much sugar, even if it's natural sugar.

      I'm not familiar with her channel and I only watched a couple of her videos, but what I saw was about a month ago she said that the comments saying she's failed her weight loss surgery are really bothering her because she's lost over 100 lbs. since her surgery, her doctor says her bloodwork is great, and she feels better than she ever has. I wasn't able to see anything clearly posted from her about her weight and whether she's gaining/losing, nor was I really able to get a sense out of what she's eating on a daily basis. It sounds to me like she is doing her best and found success after her surgery, which doesn't look the same for everyone.
      Just as a word of caution, it's hard enough trying to destigmatize the idea that weight loss surgery is the easy way out and is a lazy person's response to weight loss. Adding in the idea that then, after surgery, other people will scrutinize your every move and won't think you're doing it the "right" way can be really damaging. I haven't posted what I eat in a very long time, and in the last three months I have eaten VERY poorly (unbalanced, higher processed foods, over-snacking) due to huge amounts of stress and life events. It's a struggle to keep myself from buckling knowing I'm not doing everything "right," and I've taken a step back from UA-cam because I know that trying to film and post videos would add to my current stress levels but also there would be unhelpful comments and discussions about whether or not I'm doing things right, whether or not I'm gaining weight, and whether or not I'm failing myself and others. The internet is full of people waiting around to point a finger and say "SEE? I knew it wouldn't work!"
      I hope to release a video this week about what I'm going through, how I'm handling it, and how it's affecting my journey because I know people will relate and I always want to share the full story, but I'm also nervous of people scrutinizing my choices and my life because it doesn't fit into their idea of what they think this journey should look like.

    She is nice lovely girl but still eats carbs as crackers. She focused on weight of food but more importantly is the quality of foods, the timing and frequency how many times we eat even same amount of food and calories. Intermittent fasting healthy life style to deal with root cause of obesity even after gastric surgery. Body weight is just one thing but metabolically healthy is more important and needs education and application. The food she eats mostly processed foods. We should eat natural whole foods no human beings produced it and sold it in plastic containers.

      I'm not allowed to enjoy a cracker now and then? Look, if that works for you, please by all means. It doesn't work for me to cut that out of my life completely. We have to all find the balance of what is realistic in our lives, and then I put in the work to make small improvements over time. We are all doing the best we can.

      Also, just a disclaimer: please do not intermittent fast after bariatric surgery without consulting your doctor and ensuring your nutrient intake and vitamin levels are okay to support that kind of change.

    So the reality is that over 80% of bariatric surgery weight losses fail within five years. The reasons why are very simple .... Continuing to eat the same foods which caused obesity in the first place (things like fried chicken, cake) .... Stretching out the stomach .... And the biggy? Grazing. Keep journaling your food intake and counting your calories.

      There are certainly truths to what you are saying, no doubt. But I would exercise caution in saying 80% of WLS fail within 5 years for the simple fact that we are using a very clinical definition of failure. In those studies, they consider 50% excess weight loss as success, so if that threshold is not maintained, they say it failed. But guess what? We are humans. We have thoughts and feelings and nuance. If someone gains some of their weight back over time, but this surgery still saved their life, changed major habits, got them off diabetes meds... did they really fail? Is a specific number really what we should be using to say if you are successful? That's a very clinical doctor thing to do. And hey, statistics don't work without numbers, so it can't be completely faulted. But these numbers are used to scare people and I'm just not about that personally. Everyone has a very important experience they bring to the table that isn't recorded in numbers.

      I answer from the perspective of firstly being a doctor, secondly having had a gastric bypass myself, and thirdly as someone whose mother died of obesity. I think the problem is not that someone loses 50% of excess weight (which is an achievement in itself) but that they keep it off - most don't sadly. And we know the reasons why people regain .... Better to have the surgery and be in possession of the facts that improve the long-term outcome. Postings like yours absolutely encourage and educate people. I had my surgery many years ago - last year, I had to have unrelated tests and the surgeon commented that my stomach pouch was so small that it looked as if my surgery was only six months old. However, at one point I had also regained 50lbs ..... The result of "grazing". I have long since lost it again but any information that assists in a fellow bypasser not having to flounder and wondering why they have regained is honestly important in my humble opinion.
