The reason why you need to prune blackcurrants is because you need to allow space for new shoots that will fruit more and allow space for the plant to breathe to allow sunlight through to ripen all of the fruits.

“No use to man nor beast” what a great expression 😁
Nice video Tony. If you have a very vigorous bush you can do the prune immediately after harvesting the berries, which can stimulate new growth in the same season. Cheers!
I love the way yu say "That has no use for man nor beast". :) Thank you again for a very useful video. I only have redcurrants, but planted them this spring and they produced a bit but hope with a good pruning they will yield much more next Summer!
If you only just planted dot prune this year. wait until the third year. the berries only grow on 2nd and 3rd year wood
Brilliant, can always rely on you Tony thank you for your advice x
Thanks for the advice!
Great video! Have a wonderful evening Mr.Tony!
As always thanks Catalin :)

I might make a start of Prune my Blackcurrants and Gooseberries bushes this weekend if the weather isn't to bad Tony Plus it will be fun because i never did mine last year lol
Ive been doing a whole series and they are all uploaded new video tomorrow. perfect time to prune the fruit mate
I've been watching them all Tony. And you've been doing a great job..I started to do a video of myself pruning the Gooseberries, But i had to shelve it, I was doing to much cursing and i must of stabbed myself 20 times with the thorns lol
Mark Davidson lmao mate. they can test u
Great video buddy. Just bought some black and red currant bushes to cover a concrete wall. Could I espalier this bush to fill the space? I'm thinking I could and also get a decent harvest off it in a few years when established
black and red currents dont espalier very well
Thankyou Tony, I was thinking about growing my in a cordon, similar to fruit trees what are your thoughts?
😆 Happy Gardening, Terry.
lol funny u are talking about Cordons, i have just done a video on cordon trees. Havent thought about blackcurrant as cordons tbh
***** we will see how they do over the next couple of years.
I was told that blackcurrants fruit on older wood, but only once. So you cut out the branches with the fruit still on it at harvest time. This serves several purposes: first you get to pick the fruit off the branches while sitting comfortably on a chair; second, you know which branches need pruning, because they have fruited and are old; third, the plant gets active and puts on new growth immediately. I certainly get a good crop each year - would I get a better crop with winter pruning of the plants?
Not quite true Pam. It fruits on wood 2yr and older but after the third it tends to produce less, and this is why you do a 1/3rd the plant each year
Many thanks for this. All my blackcurrant plant has done this year is grow really tall. No fruit, just 5ft to 6ft tall branches and I cannot find anything anywhere to tell me what to do with it. Just autumn pruning. Any tips anyone?
Hopefully you will get a good harvest next year Sorry for the late reply
hello tony can u tell me do i pruin my one year old black currant bushes many thanks paul
No Paul wait until they are around 3 years old then follow the video from there
Tony
What about blackcurrant hedge please Tony
Do you think you could try to get the chopped down parts to root at this time of the year? Or are they "too dormant" for that now?
You could certainly try a hard wood cutting, its not too cold so things are starting to move. you might have to wait around 8 weeks to see signs of roots though
Today s spring or autumn ?
When is the latest time that I can prune Blackcurrants, Gooseberries Raspberries etc. as mine are still under snow here in Bulgaria?
You can prune them right up until the buds start to break, once this happens you should wait until the following year
I notice you uploaded this in January and at the end said it's perfect time for pruning. What about an autumn prune?
You need to wait for the plants to go completely dormant before pruning
@@simplifygardening thanks. Will do
hii,
at 04:00 , you were clipping of the small twig tips off.. why ? it is so short and you were clipping the tiny amount of the tips off. why is that ?
i heard you said the currant bush are bearing fruit on last years growth..
my currant bush seems to be fruiting on old branches.. even older branches... not just previous year growth.
can you help to clarify ?
thanks
andrew
He only clipped the ones facing the path so they don't grow out too much and get in the way, DON'T clip all the tips you will hinder fruit production
hii ,
i have always prune currant bush wrongly. everytime i prune it off they don't grow currant there the year..
i don't the fruiting habbit. do currant grow fruit on current season new growth or from last year growth ?
can you explain and enlighten me ? it seems everybody teaching, but no body telling on what branch do the currant bear fruit ?
thanks
andrew
They grow on last years new wood, so the wood didnt fruit last year as it was its first year, This will fruit this year. the wood that grows this year will fruit next year. typically wood fruits for around 3 years but it decreases the amount each year it bares. so by removing the third of a bush like i describe in the video by the time the wood is 2 year of fruiting ie 3 year old you remove it ready for the next year to come through, this way you always get the best yield, if you check out the redcurrant harvest video you will see the results of the pruning. Hope this has cleared it up for you
yes, thank you. very much cleared.
may i ask also:
i have a single stem gooseberry.. they have multiple branches for years.. how am i going to prune it ? by removing some of the branches each year ? i certainly can't prune the only single stem away..
goose berry bear fruit on the previously growned wood.
so, if the wood is 2017 growth, then i will fruit on that particular wood for 2018 and 2019 right ?
is it the same for black currant ? as it is same on red current.
btw, is apple tree also the same ? or is it one more year than gooseberry ? which is to say 2017 growth will fruit on 2019 onward.
any idea about pear tree ? and cherry tree ?
i have not doing proper pruning for sometime and i keep mixed things up.. hope you can clear everything for me ..
i need to do some pruning now or will be too late.
but i am not sure which i can remove, because i don't want a tree that bear no fruit.. :-)
thanks.
your video is very helpful. and you are very kind to help me.
truly
andrew
oh ya. you missed out this question:
at 04:00 , you were clipping of the small twig tips off.. why ? it is so short
and you were clipping the tiny amount of the tips off. why is that ?
thanks
andrew
What's the best time of year to do this? I'm in Canada so it is cold from October to April...
do it feb
at what time od year did you prune these ?
before spring during dormancy sorry about the late reply, YT didnt notify me of a load of comments
could you grow new plants from those cuttings ?
Yes i do it all the time
You said redcurrant pruning and blackcurrant pruning were s little different. Can you expound on that a little bit?
Red currant are a liitle more quicker to grow so you may need to prune more out otger than that the process is the same
Can you prune them in the fall after a frost?
Shirley G yes once the plant is dormant
Yes once the plants are dormant
What do you mean by crossing branches?
any branches touching
Can tree seeds be sold to me, where I am in Indonesia, can I sell trees?
Do we have to prune them what if we didn't what happnes
Well the old canes will just cause a tangled mess and will make it difficult for any fruit to be harvested
