  • How To Take Currant Bush Cuttings | Propagating Blackcurrants In Autumn & Winter
We are becoming increasingly aware that soft fruit are one of the most expensive and heavily sprayed crops out there, yet they are some of the easiest things to grow in your allotment or vegetable garden. Being perennial, this means once planted you will be rewarded with beautiful organic harvests year after year, with little or no input.
They are also one of the easiest crops to propagate, which means you can invest in one good quality plant and then make lots more plants by taking hardwood cuttings in winter, or softwood in summer, increasing your harvest potential or to even to swap with other gardeners.
Within a few years of propagating you can create a productive fruit garden, free of costs and pesticides.

As an American I thank you for this. Our govt made Currants illegal for many years and they ordered all currant farms destroyed. It's now legal for citizens to possess small amounts of certain species of the bush, so I am trying to get a bunch growing to enjoy and also give something for the wildlife to eat. The plant is so hard to come by here all I have is two small sprigs of red currant so it will be awhile before I can even get cuttings, but now I know what to do.

Great way to get free plants. I'm on the waiting list for my local allotment ( number 21 on the list! ) so if I see some soft fruit bushes cheap I'll grab some so I can build a stock of bushes ready to plant there. Might have fruit bushes on about half the allotment so it's low maintenance. 🤘

Blackcurrants: You have to harvest them within a very short period. We are lucky if we get a three week window. You need space in your freezer or go down the tincture/preserve route. They are lovely but we find that you have to plan in advance otherwise you get caught out and miss the opportunity to harvest and store them. Thank you, Erica. Great vid.

I've found that perlite really helps fight waterlogging when mixed into compost! I think it's basalt that's heated & basically turned to rock popcorn. It helps the compost keep from compacting, but is also brittle enough even tiny roots will break through it. And when it's broken up it helps add calcium and other micronutrients to your soil.
I personally like that it's an organic amendment too. It's relatively inexpensive, $1.50 - $2 per kilogram if you buy a 20 kilo bag. The stuff's light and from my experience one of those will be enough to mix into 400 - 500 gallons of compost

I bought a currant bush last year, and would like to propagate more, so I'm starting to research. I'm in the USA, zone 4A - my winters routinely get down to -25 to -35 Fahrenheit (-32 to -37 Celsius) for two to five weeks. Am I correct in assuming cuttings would NOT survive in a cold frame for me? And if so, how would I keep them alive through winter? I'm having trouble finding a channel with brutally cold winters (our wind chills are -50 to -60 F) and/or significant snow (about 1-1.5 meters in average years). Thank you.

    • @nataliedyck8312
      @nataliedyck8312 Рік тому

I basically just asked the same and what do they mean by cold frame? Green house? I think our best bet would be to dig the pots I to the ground and cover with snow, or putting cuttings straight in to the garden. I might try a few different ways and have a few in my heated garage as it doesnt get below +5 Celsius on those -40 c days. I know we have local nurseries where I got the cuttings from they grow them out in the field then dig out in spring to sell. Or they’ll have to be started in spring I’m sure they’ll take before winter.

    Greetings from California!
I rooted my currants in water this winter. I’m hoping that their roots are vigorous enough.
It’s incredibly dry where I live, and I’ve had bad luck rooting cuttings in soil, because I get so busy and since I’m not gone during daylight hours, I forget to water them.

    • @ericaslittlewelshgarden

Hey, I've used the lay down method last year with a very good outcome on blackcurrant cuttings. The leaf buds start to sprout within 10 days & roots a fortnight. You can then prick them in plastic bottles with potting soil a month later and plant them in the garden on late may.

@@ericaslittlewelshgarden Yeah, was titled som'n like 8 natural rooting hormone ingredients, or maybe that was my search string to find it.
Interesting that it doesn't matter the orientation of the cuttings. Just thinking maybe the flow of water & nutrients may prefer want to continue in same direction? Looking closely at our black currant yesterday, wanting to split off some of it, looked to be a reckless exercise, having to cut runners, but also dunno if roots also connect back to parent, so looks like cuttings is best way. Maybe too, your compost looked rich enough to maybe have some natural rooting capability.

Can someone translate the cold frame into the North American English ? What’s the purpose of it? I see it and think it’s kind of the idea of a green house to keep the plants warm. But cold frame just sounds like the opposite of it. I’m in zone 3 so my green house wouldn’t be of any help in January as it’s gets to -40 here. Would make more sense to cover it with deep snow to keep it warm.
