    Very helpful. Thank you. I’m experiencing problems for the first time in five years with my currants.

    Thanks for the tips and validation. I have seen the sawfly larvae and maggots in my currants and gooseberries this year in Portland. They hit my plants hard. I didn't get a single gooseberry from two different plants and only got a handful of maggoty currants from three bushes. Makes me wanna not grow them anymore and focus on other berries. But I will try the methods in here next year and see what results I get.

      Matthew how'd they do the last couple years since you posted this? I'm nervous after this video, just planted my first currants and gooseberries last month!

    Not in your region, and growing Ribes is highly regulated in my state, but this video helped me think outside the box about other insects that have appeared and decreased/devasted harvests of other edibles over the years. Thanks so much for stirring my brain!

    As an alternative for the shrub layer, instead of currants, what about northern spicebush, Lindera benzoin? It does well in part shade, and can be used as an alterative for allspice and for teas. Also a native plant (in my area).

    Loved this video!!. I am in New Zealand and I am just starting on planting out a food forest in my small urban garden. I have planted several types of currants and will be interesting to see what bugs attack them here where I live. Fingers crossed the first year I don't have too many problems.

    If you let the berries sit in salt water, all of the maggots leave the berry and float on top of the water. I think that they are not fond of salt water.
    I just bought a rooted cuttings of black and red currants. Will be planting them in the spring. Hopefully they will take off.

      When I read about this as a monitoring strategy, l wondered how much salt the berries absorb during the process. Do you notice any impact on taste?

    I have read about spraying kaolin clay on immature fruits to prevent the gooseberry fruit worm. I am going to try this this year. Out of 8 mature gooseberries, I got zero fruits last year.

    Love your videos. I have a quarter acre lot in Massachusetts that I just started growing as a food forest/garden. Your currant videos made me excited to plant a few varieties. Unfortunately, I when I went to my local nursery to see if they had any, they said they were banned in many places in Massachusetts, including my town. Seems they are an alternate host for a disease that has decimated the White Oak, native here. Can you suggest some other understory plants that could fill the niche currants occupy?

    for the blister aphid or any aphid always look for ants. otherwise, you are fighting a battle incorrectly. You gotta give ants something to eat all season to focus their attention on or you can put things that are ant annoying. if you don't do that ants will farm you. as for the maggots i always have ducks go through my fruit areas. they don't go too nuts they just stir things up enough.

    • @MistressOP
      @MistressOP 4 роки тому +1

      i always think that ducks and chickens are wonderful. If you are a permaculture person though. runner ducks well trained are the nuke when everything goes wrong.

    Jostaberries get graped by the sawfly larvae. They aren’t worth growing. I am about to remove mine after 5-6 years later today. Rip 🪦
