I have already pruned my blackcurrant bushes, but been hesitant with my redcurrant bush. It is knowing where to start when pruning a mature bush, so thank you for encouraging me and I will definitely follow your advice given.

I have 20 plus years old currant bushes...they aren't doing well. I saw a recommendation quite awhile back that said they don't live much longer than this and that one should dig them out and replace with new bushes. Is this what you would recommend as well? I did not get many berries this year. thanks!

20 years is fairly old, but with pruning, feeding and mulching you can keep them healthy and fruiting for longer. Sometimes a harder prune in winter to remove old wood will rejuvenate them. Martin

@@PotsTrowels thx so much, I will do that this fall. But is there a point where you would get rid of the old bush entirely and just take starts from it to start a new bush? I didn't mention that It is both my black and red currants that were planted so long ago, actually some of the reds are probably 30 yrs old that I have kept going through pruning but it just doesn't seem to be working at this point.

Thankyou I bought a jostaberry and I have been looking at how to prune it. It is a cross between a red currant and a gooseberry.

I have a white current. Do you prune them same as red or black? Thx.

White currants are pruned the same as red currants. Martin
