      Can’t actually see what you’re pruning. You had a couple of close shots but everything else from afar. The background blends in so can’t see what you’re doing!

    I only prune gooseberries from year 5 onward, unless branches are damaged or hanging too low, I get tons of berries, the bushes are about 5-6ft around, I dont worry about the open vase shape too much either as I grow gooseberries that are resistant to Mildew and fungal infections, Hinnonmäki red and Captivator are the best.

    I’m in Tennessee (US) and I just moved on to a 5 ac plot of heavily wooded land. As I was clearing the trees I came across about a dozen tall, older gooseberry plants. Average height is about 12’-15’ tall. I want to prune them way down so they might be productive again. Any pointers for an old growth bush?

    I transferred cuttings from my fruit bushes home at the end of last year so I don't have much pruning to do this time but I did have a gooseberry collapse before after not pruning it properly so it's important to get them done at this time of year. You're going to have plenty of gooseberries there Tony

    can you recommend an organicI spray to keep the dreaded saw fly at bay.

      use vinegar epsom salt and small amount of liquid soap. but if your getting sawfly your better off creating more air flow as i discuss in this video

    Hi Tony
    It’s me again. I have some gooseberry bushes. They have been left in a neglected corner of the garden for a couple of years. Today I have started to make a raised bed in an area we are going to use for soft fruit. RHS suggesting 3-4 feet spacing.
    If I adopted this spacing I will quickly run out of space.
    Is it possible to prune them right back and train them as cordons, or are cordons different root stocks. If they can be grown as cordons. Would it be best for rows to run north south and would rows for raspberries be the same.
    South facing garden
    Thanks

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  4 роки тому +1

      The bush varieties wont grow like cordons they would keep throwing major branches off because of the vigor. Id reduce the number of plants and prune them to fit. Run the lines east to west that way they will pick up the sun a lot of the day

    • @simplifygardening

      Through pruning, If you prune correctly you train the bush to grow in the direction you need

    What I’ve never understood about pruning (such as soft fruit bushes) …is if you keep pruning how is the bush ever going to get bigger?

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  7 років тому

      There is no need for the bush to get bigger as you should be removing the old wood thats about 3-4 years old as this doesnt produce fruit. the older the bush the less fruit. so keep pruning so the bush is more vigorous

    • @speedtimothy
      @speedtimothy 7 років тому +3

      Thanks for that …as I have been removing the green new shoots and leaving the mature old wood
