As one of those twenty lucky beta testers, this was a great trip down memory lane. Thanks, Chippy! A few little things I recall from those days include suggesting a section of the trailer where the player uses the Ivy Whip to travel up a corruption chasm. I thought it would be a super cool scene to include. Speaking of Grappling Hook stuff, have you ever hooked to a door and opened it and shot forward? Early on, doing that would send you astronomically far. I think it might have even crashed your game, though I'm not sure on that detail. I remember Redigit showing off the Rocket Boots for the first time... except our games weren't updated so it looked super glitchy, lol. I also recall Redigit asking me if I had any name ideas for the "eye boss". I couldn't think of anything though, so I'm not sure when Cthulhu came into the picture. Also, shoutouts to Red Yoshi, who was a sprite artist early on who is a bit forgotten, I feel. He was responsible for enemy designs such as Skeletron. To this day, I still don't know who griefed my pirate ship on the beta server, lol. It would be cool if Redigit decided to release those worlds someday! There were about ten or so in total before release. We'd get a new one every time there was some significant world generation additions.
I saw my high school best friend playing it on the tablet back in 2012-14 (not sure exactly) and I decided I had to get it myself. Bought it for PC, played it for about 17 hours straight, then decided it was too addicting for me to keep playing. Wasn't until 2018 that I finally tried it again, with the same result. All this time, I had never played it multiplayer. In 2019 my younger brother got into it and he got me to play multiplayer with him. I got way into it both multiplayer and single player and now of all of my steam games I've logged more hours in Terraria than any other by a factor of five.
This is literally why I love this game. Played it from the day it was released, to yesterday actually! And I never knew that the guide's name was the same name as the creator! 😂
I can't even imagine the stress that Red had to go through when somebody leaked the "shitty" version of terraria before it came out that kind of thing can easily destroy your entire game because first impressions are incredibly important and a lot of people would have no idea that it was just a very early version of the game and not what was supposed to release but rather than crumbling under the stress, the man overcame all obstacles and managed to release one of the best games ever made huge props to him
I actually had no idea what Terraria was before I played it... then one day, my friend's brother, who I NEVER really talked to, just gifted me the game out of the blue. I was like, ok, what the heck, I tried it out. I don't think I even checked out the trailer or anything... I was just happy with a free game! And then I fell in love... this game has been with me through all these years. I've made so many memories and it's one of my ultimate comfort games. I played it with friends, I played it solo, I played it after a bad break up, I try to introduce it to friends constantly, and I just recently picked it up again!!! I will never get tired of the game and I love ReLogic so much for all the hard work and love they put into this gem.

i started when it launched on wii u, i knew about it for a while but couldn't play it until the wii u version. Played a full playthrough (up until golem) with my little sister, it was awesome! We eventually maxed out our characters including hacked items like red's wings (infinite flight at the time) and the SDMG. Great memories, have played a lot since then. I remember 1.3 console launch coming out and being so sad when it wasn't on wii u :')
I wish they’d add a bit of dialogue to the merchant where he just says “WELCOOMEEE!” to reference everyone’s favourite obscure merchant…other than terraria’s merchant
On the first day, Redigit created a hardcore character on Master Mode. On the second day, Redigit beat many bosses. And on the third day, Redigit got hit by a boulder.
Its so crazy! Like, how do you come up with this, terraria? How do they think of a boss that would be like the Eye of Cuthulu. It's so insane to think about. I hope we could get to fight cuthulu.
I bought eleven copies myself. One on GOG, not knowing, what is it really. With my wife, we realized, that we can play both on one copy and had a blast. Then we bought steam copy, one each. And then we bought eight copies to get our friends to play with us. No one really did, but well, it was worth it. Love the game.
What's insane is when you look at the list of the best selling games of all time and realize that a good number of them had 3-5 month dev cycles (granted some of the newer short dev cycle games changed a lot over later patches, so it's almost cheating). Though honestly the long (3 to 5 yr average, 10 for longer/delayed games) dev cycles are a fairly recent thing, I remember when the original half-life was in dev for 2 years and we all called it stuck in development hell for that! Some indie games like terraria were just scoped well and were in a releasable state on what would have been a fairly normal dev cycle in the past!. Shows solid vision and good planning.
Shame it was the leak that forced the plan change like that. I still have it downloaded, still loads up to the old classic menu, but nothing else. Time certainly flies....
I would've played this game a lot sooner, but I could hardly underatand english at the time. I remember I would see people post about it in knuckles96's forums (I think that was the name) while I only played SMBX.
the fact that someone seriously had to leak an early version of terraria though, like cmon, it's a small team! I guess in the very least they made red release it sooner?
Jeez, you’re going to take 151 days to explain how Terraria was made?
It’s gonna be a long and hard endeavor, but we can get through this together!
I’m down for a 151 day crash course on terraria history
cant believe its gonna take that long!

My first memory of the game was seeing my friend play it on his phone, and i immediately fell in love with it. 😀
I remember getting a hold of an alpha copy after coming across a youtube let's play, god does the time fly fast
that final scene with queen bee made me have a ptsd flashback
Awesome video!
Love terraria, its one of the best games ever!
Its so crazy! Like, how do you come up with this, terraria? How do they think of a boss that would be like the Eye of Cuthulu. It's so insane to think about. I hope we could get to fight cuthulu.
I remember when Skeletron was the biggest baddie I had to contend with and a good ol' water bolt was my best friend.
paperbat pg was my childhood dude, my childhooood
What a time it’s been
Good job in the terraria battl royal, just watched siphos video
I bought eleven copies myself. One on GOG, not knowing, what is it really. With my wife, we realized, that we can play both on one copy and had a blast. Then we bought steam copy, one each. And then we bought eight copies to get our friends to play with us. No one really did, but well, it was worth it. Love the game.
I hope doing well chippy !
Great video
Imagine leaking someone's game and then earnestly thinking to yourself "They HAVE to hire me now 😎"
TERRARIA IS THE 10TH BEST SELLING GAME??????? WHAT??????
EXACTLY, I THOUGHT IT WAS UNDERRATED ALL MY LIFE
Yep! Over 45 Million copies sold now
is there a place where you can find more information about the past and the making of terraria?
Still being worked on ? That's a little overstatement.
my goal of collecting every single item in this game is still going :sob:
Shame it was the leak that forced the plan change like that. I still have it downloaded, still loads up to the old classic menu, but nothing else.
Time certainly flies....
Pbat is the reason I found out about Terraira.
That’s the same number of Kanto Pokemon I’m gonna have to stretch
I actually started playing terraria mobile before pre 1.3 mobile I didn't even get into hardmode. Until 1.3
Then there’s me has been working on a game for two years and haven’t even started coding.
Your telling me It took 151 days to get to 1.4.4 damn thats fast how did that happen
I would've played this game a lot sooner, but I could hardly underatand english at the time. I remember I would see people post about it in knuckles96's forums (I think that was the name) while I only played SMBX.
I first played Terraria in 2013 on xbox 360... lol. So long ago
Oh my god paper bat!I miss that dude
last year when my friend had no friends to play terraria so he bought me terraria out of no where and got me to play with him,
i played terraria alot ive gotta say somthing TERRARIA IS EPIC like if they make terraria 2 im buying IT ive played it since 2015
Huh, I always figured the Redigits nickname, Red, came from Andrew, since the middle 3 letters made up that word, but I never knew there was a Blue...
Going to the ocean and killing a bunch of sharks and orcas with the spear you get from ice queen
We've come a long way from those early days to now, with the final update almost here. Definitely no more of them coming in the future!
the fact that someone seriously had to leak an early version of terraria though, like cmon, it's a small team! I guess in the very least they made red release it sooner?
I didn't know that minecraft and terraria technically respected each other from the start
I played 9 months after its release and now all these years later I played with my wife and kids😂
