How Terraria Was Made and Why Development Suddenly Stopped
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- This Terraria documentary details the development of the indie game Terraria and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover more about how Andrew “Redigit” Spinks got the idea for the popular sandbox game and started his own indie studio Re-Logic, to begin development on Terraria. The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Andrew and his team made and how Terraria was inspired by some of Andrew’s favorite games.
It also takes a close look at all the hurdles Re-Logic had to go through during Terraria’s 9-year long development cycle. There were actually multiple moments during its development that could have caused a premature end to Terraria’s decade long journey. Furthermore, it delves into other Re-Logic projects like Terraria 2 and Terraria: Otherworld and what exactly happened to them over the years. Lastly, the documentary explores Terraria’s legacy and how Re-Logic handed the keys to the community after they released the last major update titled “Journey’s End”.

Terraria feels like it's been perpetually stuck in a world of "just one more update", and I for one am not complaining.
"Just one more game" 2 hours later: "Aight for real just one more game" 3 hours later: "Why do I hear birds outside?"
The “just 10 more minutes” of game developers.
"just 1 more ore vein, then i'll go to bed. . .honest"
as for the updates . i thought they were done, with 1.3. i hadn't touched the game in 5 years.
i suspect 1.4 actually is "the journey's end" though , because the devs consider moon lord to be "The Final Boss"
me too
The "just one more turn" of Civ games

I feel like Andrew is way too comfortable to leaving his comfort zone. I was listening to this video while working and the only thing I heard "So Andrew decided to move on." "And Andrew felt its finished" "Andrew felt it complete"
Lets be honest terrria will never be completed, but i still respect his decision
Honestly, after seeing some changes made in Journey's End, i was glad that he decided to stop working on it.
He let Terraria's fame get to his head, if he continued to to work on it, it would probably hurt the game.
@@ewg5511 Yeah, with how butthurt he got over the backlash by the community for adding a negative penalty to what was essentially a mere vanity choice (the whole torch luck debacle) without telling anybody he added it in the first place showed how petty he could be with his own game. It's for the best he moved on to other things.

One of the things I always loved about Terraria is the fact that the default difficulty makes you only lose money, not items upon death. I always disliked dying and losing everything in Minecraft, along with creatures destroying your base. I disliked it so much that until the update that let you use cheats to prevent losing items on death and stop monsters from destroying blocks, I didn't play outside of peaceful difficulty.
I'm the opposite. I like it when I lose loot and especially love it when mobs can destroy blocks and build/tunnel to me.
@@mrmister1738 mediumcore
lol git gud
tbf losing items in terraria would be a much bigger pain in the ass than in minecraft because the items in terraria are much harder to obtain, like finding them randomly in chests or having to defeat bosses, in minecraft if you lose your endgame armour you just have to go mine more diamonds

Hahah he is easy! Prioritize movement over damage. Then just dodge everything, and it doesn't matter how long the fight takes, cause you rarely if ever take damage.
I don’t think I’ve ever been this entertained watching a UA-cam video
Glad to hear that!
This is because you never watched "Le fishe"
Another great one! Thank you for explaining the story in such a linear way, as i struggled very much with understanding everything that was happening during the development of this game.
My pleasure, glad to hear the video could help!
Years n years ago, a mate said that Terraria is just like 2D Minecraft, so I didn't pick it up. A few years after that I got it on Steam for cheap, and found it's actually so so much more than that! A true masterpiece, that stands on it's own, with alot of clones, some that are actually quite good, like Starbound. Great vid as always mate! Keep em coming

Nice Video! Seems fairly accurate from my perspective for all of the 2011 stuff, and Good job pronouncing my last name, some people really butcher it. :p
Although a small note, I didn't make 'Major Design Decisions'. On the game itself, I only really wrote a few NPC dialogues and made some suggestions for possible items, but mostly my work was behind the scenes (Beta Testing, bug tracking, reading and answering emails, patch-note tracking) and of course the community management stuff.
Terraria has grown so much since I left the team and I am glad to raise a glass to it's 10 year anniversary.

Holy cow, wasn't expecting to see you in the comments! Haha I couldn't find any reference material for your last name, but I'm glad I got it right :D
See, I knew you mostly did behind the scenes stuff and then there was an article or an interview with Andrew where I read you helped make some of the major design decisions, but those things can always be exaggerated or taken out of context of course so thank you for clearing that up.
Also, thanks for leaving a comment! I never expect my videos to reach any of the people that worked on the game so it's awesome when they leave a comment and I'm glad to hear you liked the video. Cheers Jeremy!
This editing is so good, the 4d terraria background, the pixel art of the person talking, and the terraria text on the screen

Every major update to terraria just went and added good depth to the game, and sometimes put layers together for the players to just enjoy more and more. We can only hope that when they do finally decide it's time for a new creation upon to succeed terraria, they'll follow this into making something going just as amazing that grows more dynamically. They've already overcome a lot of terraria's old limitations along 1.3 and 1.4. But I can imagine how hard it could really be to come up with something that adds greater depth and options to a new game creation. Starbound already tried it, bringing a game with many worlds to build on and inhabit, but Pushed upon other harder limits to deal with and other issues. I could really imagine though that if they did come up with a true successor, they'd work together to make something outstanding too, after so many ups and down to experiment with. Maybe someday we'll see it, With a greater engine to power it, along with worlds that really seem to stretch out as far as the imagination.
This man could make a game where a man wearing 2 bunnies on his head can defeat an eldritch god with a blade made of rainbows and a cat head that shoots, well, rainbows and cat heads along with a blonde girl with a syringe sound so serious

From one game, they earned of the 10 years. 350 million dollars for development.
Red is the truth. A video game developer who sought zero DLC and pushed forward into shaping a legendary title while trying to make time for his family. He released a game that was just great at launch, then evolved it into a priceless replay value title. I had the PC version from 1.0 and decided to buy it again on PS3 because the lack of DLC and continued development is what I lived for in the 90s.
Fantastic video as allways ^^ could you do this with Katana Zero too?
Thank you! Katana Zero is on my list ;)
Wait, I played Super Mario Bros. X growing up. I'm surprised to hear just now that he also made Terraria (which, even now, I have never played).

I have always dreamed to become a game developer , i tried unreal engine 4 and made some progress in learning it and i watched alot of tutorials and understood most of them. Though that was 3 years earlier as my university of M.D.s (Medicals) started and i stopped using it.
Seeing how andrew started just feeds me with more hope that someday i will finish university and have the free time i have always wanted to have, so that i can start a journey (that most likely will fail but satisfied with alot of fun and dedication) in making story-based game that people might enjoy.
I want game development not to be my main source of income as i want people to have fun and discover new characters they like in my games, and for free , as my main job will be something else in real life (most likely a general practitioner or some other medical job depending on how i perform in university)
I’ll say that Relogic is one of the only developers that I actually trust after playing the game for a long time. They’ve shown that they listen to the fans, and when they update, they add things that everyone likes. Quick travel, auto door opening, and other stuff. They nailed it in the beginning, and kept going. They knew what we would want because they made the game to be enjoyable for everyone, by making it enjoyable for them. Maybe they didn’t make the most money from it, but they made a game that will never truly disappear.
The way you said "Henrique" so smooth

I regret not playing this game when I first knew about it in like 2019. I literally bought it last week and now I have farms, artificial biomes even some Hardmode farms that I'll use in the future *[yes, I'm still in PREHARDMODE bcs I'm scared of hardmode so I'm preparing everything I can]* this game is amazing, I never get bored of it. First night was... yea pretty rough. IT WAS HELL ALRIGHT? IT WAS A BLOOD MOON STRAIGHT AWAY. The amount of stuff I NEED to do and I CAN do in Terraria is phenomenal, it's what's keeping me playing it. I made a small world bcs it says it's good for single player[which is a bad idea don't do this] it's not THAT small but others say, medium is better. I already have a crap ton of stuff in my small world so I'm not changing it(it's still fun tbh, and I'm kinda busy with school so it's fine regardless.) Just wanna share my story with this game, it's fun. If ever someone who hasn't played or is about to play it is reading this. It's worth buying it even now in 2022 :D
Liero was such a fun game. Used to play in high school in 2003 with a floppy disk on the old pentium 2s in our library and computer labs.

Great video! A video on Axiom Verge would be cool, I think.
I love Terraria, I think that more modding integration with Steam will be really great for its lifespan, and make it more easy to modify and play. I remember playing SMBX on an old laptop, and being very surprised that the same team was behind two games which I enjoyed so much.

It's 2069 yet there is still no Geometry Dash update. I will wait for its arrival!
I've gotta say, excluding the PC version (which I haven't played) the Wii U version is by far the best version. Having movement and combat on normal controls with the accuracy of stylus and touchscreen for building is just perfect.
Terraria is amazing
I get burnt out by games easily but I always come back to Terraria
Imagine loving the game on PC in 2012 then finding it would only get more updates on console. You'd be pissed, what a dick move. Thank god his wife had a brain.
I always get a niche vibe about Terraria, but checking the list of best selling video games, it made #14. That just surprises me for some reason. Well deserving though, honestly one of the best games of all time to me and many others.

Terraria is one of the greatest games we have (and i guess minecraft for the same reasons)
You buy it once, no matter the time, and get all this content and new content for essentially free. No dlc, no microtransactions. Just a fun engaging game with a great community.
Thanks for a wonderful video for one of my favorite games that holds a special place in my heart.
Like every famous band that says they're done, Terraria just got a new update as a couple weeks ago.
I want more terraria updates. Even though I understand why they stopped, it has impacted so many people and I feel like it could have alot more content. For me terraria was always this game where I never had done it all or collected all items in. Now that it's over there's not much left to do. I enjoy the time I had with this game though.
Thanks Re-logic
its been years and i still love playing this game.
This is slightly inaccurate, though no fault of your own because a lot of it happened behind closed doors.
I worked with Finn (Tiy) on Starbound and was present for the drama that happened around Terraria stopping development. For most of Terraria's development and at the time he left, Tiy was the only artist. He had secretly started development of Starbound in May 2011 and when Redigit found out in December of that year he threatened legal action to try and stop it. Tiy succeeded and in response Redigit announced Terraria would end. I'm sure the other reasons given were a factor too, but as far as I know that was the primary motivator.
"Why development suddenly stopped"
Terraria devs : ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?!
Terraria is my favourite game. Started playing the game on WiiU and the game was/is amazing. Hope for a new update or game.

Re-logic is the only game company I will pre-order anything from. They have earned my trust, not just that the game they make will be good, but also that if the game doesn't live up to expectations, they will make it right. Pretty much anything Re-Logic makes I will probably buy, as for me, it's similar to supporting a UA-camr on patreon. I enjoy their work and what they do and what to support them.
