I hope you don’t mind me pinning this comment just to help clarify this! It’s a bit confusing, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the final Bowser fight itself. Whether or not we actually beat him in “1 turn” depends on how you look at it. There are 2 completely separate phases, and the game treats these like different battles. Phase 1, Bowser becomes invincible. You have 2 chances to attack before this happens. Even if you “beat” Bowser in Phase 1, the show must go on. He will never die. The only way forward is by trying the move Star Beam while he’s powered up, and since that no longer works, we are destined to lose. A couple cutscenes turn things around though! Phase 2 starts after that break, and is different. This time, we can actually win if Bowser gets knocked down to 0 health. And a Turn 1 kill is possible! This is because Bowser’s health pool is carried over from phase 1. Any damage we did in the earlier fight will still be useful. If you do enough damage in the first phase, you can kill him on Turn 1 in the second phase. This is the fastest you can possibly kill him, and it takes a solid strategy to pull off. It’s also very luck-based. The video explains the mechanics of Bowser’s AI and Power Bounce and how that information allows us to come up with these strategies, which may be used in speedruns and challenge runs.
@@d3-ll754 Pretty much, and this was a thought experiment on how we could do the fight in as few turns as possible. Turns out you can also *theoretically* deal 99 damage to him in 1 turn if you get insanely lucky with Power Bounce, but that makes no difference in Phase 1. You'd likely have to manipulate RNG to even see that happen too, and that's another topic of its own

Good video! I'm a total math nerd and love this kind of stuff. As a bit of a point of clarification, when the chart is shown at 8:37, the column that reads "% chance to continue bouncing" should probably read "cumulative % chance to continue bouncing", as the odds shown are representative of a cumulative percentage rather than independent trials at that point. An interesting extra that would be fun to know would be the expected value of the number of jumps. It isn't too hard to calculate; just a bit time consuming since you can't generalize the formula until jump 9. A real close value for the expected number of jumps is about 3.653 (I rounded and also stopped chugging numbers on my phone calculator on jump 8, as all jumps after 9 have a really low chance and are negligible), which means most trials will end on the 3rd or 4th jump, but you're ever so slightly skewed towards the 4th jump. This makes sense, as (barely) over half the trials get to jump #4 or more. Further, the probabilities of stopping on higher jumps (up until jump 8) are not negligibly small, and bring the value up a tad due to the jump number being higher despite the lower probability.
The way that my brother and I would beat Bowser is through Goombario's Multibonk ability. There is no Cap to the amount of times you can hit Bowser with it. Peach beam and use Charge. There is something so fun about watching stats about a game from 20 years ago proving you can beat the final boss in one turn. I love your videos, they are very interesting.
I think 'kind of' is a fitting answer to the question posed at the start of the video. Not just for the reason mentioned, but also because I find it hard to justify a straight 'yes' when the most effective method known is so luck dependent.
What happens if you forcibly trigger a "defeated" state on Prologue Bowser using hacks? Can he even be defeated by only hacking your damage output to ludicrous amounts?
To my knowledge from playing around in an emulator once, the game locks up if you defeat prologue Bowser. When he uses star shield in that fight, the programmers simply increase his defence by one which is enough to make all of Mario's moves do no damage but if you hack Mario's attack power to be higher, you can beat him. Why it crashes, I presume because there is no information in the game's code for what to do if you win that fight since you are supposed to lose for the following cutscene to trigger. After all, you aren't supposed to be able to win so I suppose they didn't need to program anything for that outcome.i'm no expert though.
@@fatforceremorse I have a bit of a more involved theory, based on other crashes found by Stryder7x. The battle system probably has an internal mechanism put in place for the developers to allow special enemies to override the standard Game Over and enemy defeated sequences. Prologue Bowser is one such enemy, that overrides the Game Over (so you don't just lose), but doesn't override the enemy defeated sequence. The devs also probably don't check if Bowser was indeed not defeated before starting the original cutscene (they just coded the cutscene to begin after battling Bowser, since you're supposed to be unable to defeat him anyway) As a result, when defeating Prologue Bowser, two cutscenes play at once (the standard enemy defeated + Prologue Bowser kicks Mario out). The enemy defeated cutscene getting rid of Bowser's sprite, in turn, causes the regular cutscene to crash the game.
@@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 I seem to remember the game instantly breaks the moment you deal the fatal damage to Bowser, it cuts to a static screen of the sky where the floating castle is. Could be an emulator thing though, N64 with a cheat device maybe reacts differently.
This was actually explained in an earlier video: on N64 the game crashes, but on Virtual Console the battle ends like any other and the prologue continues as normal, with Mario reacting somewhat differently

Gotta love ‘em mechanics. I wish i could learn the process and help with these things. I have already tried analyzing ram in NDS games but i did some little things, nothing too crazy... You and everyone you relate to simply destroy the game’s code and use it to your advantage (or to create awesome content). I would love to learn to do these things and help. You amaze me by doing some incredible TASs to show your points clearly. JDAster amazes me with the statistics he gets from analizing the games code (i dont even know how to SEE the code, imagine understanding it...). And the speedrunners of this game are just awesome and i love watching everyone play. Same applies for other games like SM64. I’d love to be able to help, seriously ;-;
You know, I told someone in a stryder stream that this wasn't possible long before this was uploaded. Now, look where that claim got us. It got us a very interesting video on a limit of an overpowered move and that limit being broken for a final boss quick kill. Damn.
If I remember correctly, each badge is unique and is coded so multiples do nothing. For example, "Power Plus" badge is assigned a unique value; lets's say you copy the "Power Plus" from Shyguy's toybox and it's identifier is "001", the copy would also have that identifier. It can be equipped but has no effect after the first one. It's mentioned in Stryder's "most elaborate glitch" video.
Honestly, I’d love it if you branched out into Paper Mario challenge run videos. It’d be nice to see. I’m imagining “Hardest Paper Mario Bosses to bear with 1 HP” and all sorts of stuff of that caliber.
holy shit, haven't heard that name in awhile. I used to watch bird way back before he even had a sub button. It's crazy stumbling on this video in my recommended bar and hearing him in a video with so many views. His streams were so nice for chilling and chatting.
These videos are so cool! Also, nice of you to write the script for Bird to read, that part at the end must have taken especially long to come up with ;)
My sister can max out on tidal wave. I used to pull it off as a kid. Hated it when the game crashed on the N64. But cool video, dude. Loved Paper Mario as a kid and still play it.
I recently did a challenge run of not using partners to attack at all (except first strikes) and it was BRUTAL fighting Bowser. Especially that dumb Star wave that cancels attack boosts.
i think with hax you can do this. The hack turns off his invicibility but he will do ass loads of damage. And in the first fight of the whole game, bowser actually only has 1 point of defense, so its possible to kill him when he's shielded but the game crashes of course.
A fun challenge in TTYD is hammerman and Double pain have to be equipped at all times (if given the jump command in glitz pit use partner), no HP upgrades (except for to 15hp) and super guards are not allowed (except to get a different Yoshi color against the iron clefts) Hammer Throw and Clock out was the best thing to get when I finally got them.
I'm so confused, how is that one turn? Both Mario and Sushi attack more than once.

It's the number you get from division. So, for say, 6÷2, the quotient is 3 (and remainder 0) and for 9÷2, the quotient is 4 and remainder 1.
señor futaba, it is an honor
Why i even watch this channel is a complete mystery, but i Love it!
Hears final boss music
Me: Nintendo why you delete music channel
6:45 F in the chat for that poor goomba

Gotta love ‘em mechanics. I wish i could learn the process and help with these things. I have already tried analyzing ram in NDS games but i did some little things, nothing too crazy... You and everyone you relate to simply destroy the game’s code and use it to your advantage (or to create awesome content). I would love to learn to do these things and help.
You amaze me by doing some incredible TASs to show your points clearly.
JDAster amazes me with the statistics he gets from analizing the games code (i dont even know how to SEE the code, imagine understanding it...).
And the speedrunners of this game are just awesome and i love watching everyone play.
Same applies for other games like SM64. I’d love to be able to help, seriously ;-;
Seeing a game opened up and having its mechanics explained makes making games look a lot more possible.
Good luck on me, getting Paper Mario 64 and Paper Mario thousand year door.
Don’t worry they’re really easy...
Get emulator on the 64 version
You know, I told someone in a stryder stream that this wasn't possible long before this was uploaded.
Now, look where that claim got us. It got us a very interesting video on a limit of an overpowered move and that limit being broken for a final boss quick kill. Damn.
"Can bowser get defeated in one turn"
It's surprisingly simple
I had no idea there was luck based around the multi-jumps. I just thought it was crazy timing.
Great vid as usual Dyler
But but but.. it hasn’t been a year?
I love seeing these videos of my favorite game of all times.
Couldn’t you copy the Dodge Master and lucky day badges to guarantee high values?
If I remember correctly, each badge is unique and is coded so multiples do nothing.
For example, "Power Plus" badge is assigned a unique value; lets's say you copy the "Power Plus" from Shyguy's toybox and it's identifier is "001", the copy would also have that identifier. It can be equipped but has no effect after the first one.
It's mentioned in Stryder's "most elaborate glitch" video.
Stryder already covered that copied badges do jack shit. So the answer is no.
HE RETURNS!
Love your vids dude, especially ttyd vids, good to see you upload again
You just went through QPUs and used a scuttlebug to one hit Bowser...
HOW IS YOUR COMMENT SO LOW
Memetastic why are you here
if my reply is third that means ill be famous when this video gets famous
lady bow is the best
Honestly, I’d love it if you branched out into Paper Mario challenge run videos. It’d be nice to see. I’m imagining “Hardest Paper Mario Bosses to bear with 1 HP” and all sorts of stuff of that caliber.
When defeating Bowser in 1 turn doesn't crash Paper Mario.
Pathetic.
holy shit, haven't heard that name in awhile. I used to watch bird way back before he even had a sub button. It's crazy stumbling on this video in my recommended bar and hearing him in a video with so many views. His streams were so nice for chilling and chatting.
When you’re this early and have nothing to say.
An upload on my birthday?! You shouldn’t have! For real tho this is the best paper Mario channel, and I’m looking forward to more. Peace
The answer is...
Watch the video, don't expect spoilers from me, his videos are the best and can explain everything
Eh, *_kinda_*
"Behold! My most POWERFUL possession! The Six-Sided Dice!"
.
.
"Ooh! That sucks! Three bounces for you! Better luck next time!"
daddy strider, can you beat paper mario sticker star without sending the game flying through the window after 30 minutes?
In theory yes, but it's a 1 in 11 billion chance.
Yes! A new upload! This video was totally worth the wait! Keep it up!
These paper mario videos are always impressive and insightful!
I came here from ASDF Movie 12, also very specific looking calculations the game does that makes a speedrun very difficult.
This is really cool! I'm so excited whenever you put out a new video, keep making the great content please!
To this day people still love this series
Man I love these exploration of Paper Mario.
Props Stryder! Love the videos and are always keeping it fresh man. And wow only a day old and more views than subscribers?! Nice man
Im so happy my favorite game ever just keeps getting more and more playable.
I love this channel, everything is so well explained!
Glad to see you uploading again!!
this was a very interesting video, it’s not exactly a topic i’ve ever thought about before.
i can promise you nobody cares
someone should make a mod that allows you to damage star rod-powered bowser, but he still has his same damage output
i think with hax you can do this. The hack turns off his invicibility but he will do ass loads of damage.
And in the first fight of the whole game, bowser actually only has 1 point of defense, so its possible to kill him when he's shielded but the game crashes of course.
Watching these videos makes me realize I need to play this one day
Bro over here DEMOLISHING that goomba like holy hell man it was overkill on the first jump, now you're just brutalizing the poor thing.
A fun challenge in TTYD is hammerman and Double pain have to be equipped at all times (if given the jump command in glitz pit use partner), no HP upgrades (except for to 15hp) and super guards are not allowed (except to get a different Yoshi color against the iron clefts)
Hammer Throw and Clock out was the best thing to get when I finally got them.
Nice video!
Paper Mario is a perfectly balanced game with no exploits
New video, nice. Thanks for your work!
Can't a dead game just rest in peace
Nice to see you still upload
