Just caught a Stryder stream last night. He spent three hours trying to go accross a sewer room before the game crashes and fell asleep on stream. Great entertainer he is.
If you struggle with it, you can actually do the same thing he did with Goombaria to onevof the two Toads in that room and get a slower but more reliable BHS. I can't exactly explain it but there's videos
I think I figured it out! I was trying to think of things shared in every sewer room (or at least most) and things that happen at random over time. THE WATER DRIPS (i'm serious) the water drips must have to check for both Mario's and the partner's current position to check if the splash animation from the drip will collide with the player, the partner, or the floor. It would make sense due to having a seemingly random timing, being in most (if not all sewer rooms), and having some level of interaction with the partner. The only other thing I could think of would be the blooper battles. (also no water drips appeared in the footage at all)
Do the drops fall at regular intervals? If not, they might build up and cause a random crash like the footprint crash in Stryder7x's top 10 game crashing glitches video. I've never played the game before, so I know nothing about the water drops.
@@autumn4442 If that were the case, the game would crash in the sewers even when you do have a partner, and it doesn't. Playing normally, the game's pretty stable.
Hi Stryder7x! I have a theory for the sewer crashes. Usually in the sewers, there are little droplets of water falling from the ceiling and splashing down. I noticed that in all of your videos of the sewer locations, there were never any droplets falling. Could it be that the drips include partner locations for their RNG calculations, and without a partner it crashes the game?
@@Melecie those are battle mechanics though. They removed a lot of overworld mechanics by getting rid of them. Even Super Paper Mario had "partners." Not to mention it opens up more stories and conflicts through making obtaining "powers" linked to characters rather than... Not having them at all. I’m legit really curious why it crashes so randomly in the sewers. Does anyone know if there are any cutscenes in the sewers that may involve partners?
D r e a m D a y z aka Royal No, there aren't. The only things related to partners are the super block, and other partner-like obstacles (e.g Sushi required for the water segments, Watt required for the invisible blocks).
Derek Alexander Lara Carmona Ah. My only other idea besides that is mayyybe it’s because you have no partner and when the game remembers the power up block it crashes. Purely hypothetical though. It could be the case if we tried to reach chapter 5 or 7 with an easily accessible super block.
Derek Alexander Lara Carmona - I was thinking of that as well, the Super Block. I'm assuming if we got to a super block, it'd just crash instantly upon trying to use it even without these crashes within the sewers. I didn't think of the partner obstacles, however. Perhaps since the game in a state of having no partners or list of them internally at all for the game to reference, including Goompa, the game crashes when it doesn't have any kind of list to check for partners in relation to these obstacles and potential events when it should. Since you regularly visit and revisit these areas to make backtracking and progress much easier throughout the course of the game, I guess it must do some sort of check in these specific areas on your party, and by extension your story progress in a normal situation. Maybe to know what you can and can't do, and queue up any needed events if they're still possible to trigger. Maybe as some sort of memory-saving trick related to story progress? If you can't access the water area with Sushi or use Watt to reveal the invisible blocks because you don't have them, in example, why bother having the game prepare the checks for those partners at all? I guess it's not just a completely instant crash because the check for your party member list happens to be just slow enough you can dick around and get into places you can make stuff happen with, like the save-block down there. Or maybe this game is just somewhat broken and glitchy in design since I guess in a lot of cases it doesn't expect you to do anything but what you should be able to in that specific order. And by somewhat I mean massively so. But who knows for know.
When exiting horizontal pipes, the unfurling of Mario is supposed to pop the partner out from behind you but the game doesn’t know how to animate the missing partner. That’s the only reason I can think of as to why it crashes there.
I really liked this new format! Cool to get to see the formative process of trial and error trying to understand what's going on without having to wade through a lot of repetitive footage and whatnot. One of these days I'll catch a stream. :P
I was going to assume it had something to do with it trying to load the tunnel animation for a partner but i know nothing about this so take it with a grain of salt
About the Skolar crash. The game after getting Star Storm plays a continuation of the cutscene where Bow decides to join you permanently. Since she's not there, the game freaks out trying to load partner text. For the sewers, have you tried all pipes? Or just sewer related ones? Maybe an issue with it trying to load a partner as Mario exits a pipe. The only exception if this is true is Mario's house pipe, as it's used when both alone and with partners.
Stryder figures out immediately what Shigeru Miyamoto still struggles with _to this very day._ Paper Mario *without partners* simply *_DOES NOT WORK._*
This game is some amazing spaghetti code that not having a partner causes crashes in random places where it DEFINITELY shouldn't, like the sewers. I get why it crashes when it needs to call a partner as part of a cutscene, but it absolutely does not need to do it there.
I just watched a vod from a stream where stryder was playing with the camera in a weird zoomed-out/freed state and at the urging of the chat he went for blue house skip in that...rather distracting game state. The result, of course, was that he casually succeeded on his first try. What a legend
i didn't realize before because it was just so subtle and relaxing, but the toad town tunnels crash is potentially the second most soothing crash of all time, because of the sound of rushing water from the pipe!
I think the sewer issue is that in the Prologue and Epilogue, Mario can freely walk throughout all of Toadtown alone. Which means that there is an if function for Mario coming out of a pipe alone, and the script ends normally. But in the sewers, a place you can only come in with partners, there isn't- it loads Mario, then it gives a few seconds to load the partner's animations. However, there's no partner, so you're on a timer before the game crashes. Entering a pipe seems to immediately override any partner animations/Mario animations, so this is why you can get out before it crashes most of the time, assuming you do it quick enough. The sewer itself seems to be one large, interconnected map just like the overworld areas, with the difference that entering it always involves the pipe and the pipe animation.
with the one in the sewers where you hit the save block and then you cant get out because of the crashes, that could be used in that one video that you made about the haunted cartridge
I don't know if Stryder reads comments or not but I think he could put on some really cool glitch runs at AGDQ if he wanted to, I know that I would go to AGDQ just to see some of the crazy glitches he could show off.
I think you're still equipped with a partner object that just doesn't have an assigned partner value. The game still attempts to check/retrieve relevante data from this object for collision, coordinates or other values. If certain partners have larger or smaller collision boxes or behave differently, the game can crash if it expect a non existant value in a X condition.
This is fascinating! It really shows that the developers honestly never expected the game to be broken to the extent that it has been. After the prologue, you would *always* have a partner and thus never need to really handle errors. Combined with arbitrary updates/checks which may or may not register or edit party data, and you get these wild effects. Amazing!
dude i love this channel so much, paper mario 64 is the best game of all time, its so amazing this channel is dedicated to this game, even if its exploiting multiple different ways to break the game,it would be nice to see some mario rpg or thousand year door episodes too
in the first Toy Train Moonwalk shenanigan, the train also moonwalked! you went right from Blue Station, which should send you to Pink Station, but it sent you to Red Station instead. I didn't actually see Mario sliding around at first so I thought the train going to the wrong station was what you meant by 'Moonwalk'.
Jordan The Gamer I think cause anti guy is broken in this game with how powerful he is so it's probably some kind of analogy for how broken the game is...
I was busy playing Paper Mario a week ago and was at chapter 6, then I wondered "What if it's possible to get to Chapter 6 without getting any Magical Seeds?" And "Is there any way to skip forever forest to reach Boo' s Mansion faster?"
Love your videos and this may get lost in the ether. Im a software engineer and just wanted to give some theories on that cause i get kinda intrigued possible crashes and bugs and stuff. It is possible the partners crash not for a dialogue reference but maybe for movement reference. This is just some theories: - when a cut scene force movement on a ally even if it is just a small adjustment or a forced walk up to to an ally, its possible the referenced ally for that breaks it. - the sewers problem during the crash may force a ally reference based on movement, being in the sewers, the landscape is odd with the pipe texture being uneven, from what iv played before when an ally falls behind the game forces the ally to catch up to mario, alternatively the pipe animation depending on how fast or slow you are going might force the game to reference the ally. sometimes iv seen allies forcibly move toward mario faster than normal even during a ground pound, why its prominent in the sewer is beyond me - obviously, a timing issue for sewer crash, which is not consistent cause it seems to be possible an internal clock cycle check on a global value, which would account for the randomness. i would definitely check if walking and THEN spin jumping which successfully go to you is consistent but it could be a combination of the two. also cross reference the cut scenes that crash with ones that where you actually have the ally and see whats suppose to happen there. movement, dialogue, both, or could be a verification. but from what i have seen, it is totally possible two different programmers did the programming differently, like trigger dialogue relative to ally position versus somewhere triggering dialogue to direct position on the map, but this would mean that it is inconsistent based on the programmer at the time lol. i never comment on stuff but i love this game and i love your content. Thanks!
I love the methodology on subtle display at 2:38 . "Entering this door locks the game up. But what if I LZS into the doorway and skew my entry angle!?"

cStixx but he wouldn't be able to get to the sewers on an actual N64 cartridge without partners because the game crashes at the boss of the prologue
The Jet Squadron That's another haunted cartridge idea! Or Stryder could do a VC version this time
Did you watch the video? He did escape.
"He's just sittin' there like, wiggling."
If there is ever a way to beat Paper Mario without Partners, the category might as well be called "color splash %" lol
Partnerless and No Level Ups should be stickerstar%
Been watching this channel lately and I got to say that I didn't think paper mario glitches could be this interesting.
No kooper glitches
NOOOOOoOOoOOoooooo...
Well... would you consider not having kooper a kooper glitch? This is a stretch but whatever I'm trying!
Kooper is broken
Kooper has died already, so no glitches can be done without him anymore.
R. I. P. Kooper the Koopa. 2001-2017 "At least he got older than Windows XP"
Rock Radiance123 you crashed Paper Mario by saying no
The cool part was being there at the Stream! It was crazy looking at all the weird stuff.
8:47
mariosonicfan2010 OH LAWD there's probably a lot of crashes that joke applies to.
"I will activate paint!" -book of mario, thousands of doors
I don't know if Stryder reads comments or not but I think he could put on some really cool glitch runs at AGDQ if he wanted to, I know that I would go to AGDQ just to see some of the crazy glitches he could show off.

The game has actually been reduced to WALKING crashing Paper Mario.
Error! Mario is not allowed to go alone.
Mom: have fun at school make lots of friends!
Me: what if I don't have any?
This:
BREAKING NEWS: BREATHING CRASHES PAPER MARIO
IF YOU OR A LOVED ONE HAS BREATHED AROUND THIS GAME, STOP BREATHING IMMEDIATELY.
THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
Paper Mario really is the gift that keeps on giving for all those who love glitches.
Amazing!
Well, this was..... strange.
dude i love this channel so much, paper mario 64 is the best game of all time, its so amazing this channel is dedicated to this game, even if its exploiting multiple different ways to break the game,it would be nice to see some mario rpg or thousand year door episodes too
3:14 You do Paper Mario glitches, of course it's not normal!
Refusing to make any friends crashes paper Mario.
An idea I've had for a while: what if you hack to win the battle against Bowser in the prolouge?
Ben G it crashes. And yes I'm being serious.
On VC, Mario has a thumbs up although peach thinks otherwise.
The game crashes
I still can't cope with the fact that this is supposed to be the world record holder for GLITCHLESS!
in the first Toy Train Moonwalk shenanigan, the train also moonwalked! you went right from Blue Station, which should send you to Pink Station, but it sent you to Red Station instead. I didn't actually see Mario sliding around at first so I thought the train going to the wrong station was what you meant by 'Moonwalk'.
Your voice is very soothing. I listen to UA-cam videos while I sleep and yours have been great background noise. (I watch them while conscious, too)
Being forever alone crashes paper mario and your heart
“It tries to pull out Bow, and the game just dies!”
I love you Stryder
I have a quick little question, why did you make the Anti-Guy your logo?
Jordan The Gamer I think cause anti guy is broken in this game with how powerful he is so it's probably some kind of analogy for how broken the game is...
you can't just ask someone why they're black
Breathing crashes Paper Mario.
Having no friends crashes Paper Mario
Seeing you this confused and surprised by Paper Mario glitches bring me great joy.
This is just some theories:
- when a cut scene force movement on a ally even if it is just a small adjustment or a forced walk up to to an ally, its possible the referenced ally for that breaks it.
- the sewers problem during the crash may force a ally reference based on movement, being in the sewers, the landscape is odd with the pipe texture being uneven, from what iv played before when an ally falls behind the game forces the ally to catch up to mario, alternatively the pipe animation depending on how fast or slow you are going might force the game to reference the ally. sometimes iv seen allies forcibly move toward mario faster than normal even during a ground pound, why its prominent in the sewer is beyond me
- obviously, a timing issue for sewer crash, which is not consistent cause it seems to be possible an internal clock cycle check on a global value, which would account for the randomness.
i would definitely check if walking and THEN spin jumping which successfully go to you is consistent but it could be a combination of the two. also cross reference the cut scenes that crash with ones that where you actually have the ally and see whats suppose to happen there. movement, dialogue, both, or could be a verification. but from what i have seen, it is totally possible two different programmers did the programming differently, like trigger dialogue relative to ally position versus somewhere triggering dialogue to direct position on the map, but this would mean that it is inconsistent based on the programmer at the time lol. i never comment on stuff but i love this game and i love your content. Thanks!
Being forever alone crashes Paper Mario.
I love the methodology on subtle display at 2:38 . "Entering this door locks the game up. But what if I LZS into the doorway and skew my entry angle!?"
Is fun to see my favorite game get destroyed by glitches
8:54 Wow, Stryder is really good at blue house skip. Looks like that glitch is super easy compared to something like Badge duplication or background storage.
