  • Sometimes it is hard to come up with words for certain experiences, and for this one, ridiculous comes to mind. The weather co-operated and we went north to fish the Apostle Islands, to target lake trout there for the first time. I have only ever targeted them on MN's North Shore, and we were hoping to explore a new area of Lake Superior. Over the course of 12 hours of fishing, we were able to put 36 lake trout in the boat, with 4 over 33. Steady all day, Fish after fish, with multiple doubles was the theme of the trip, with almost ever fish coming within the bottom 10 feet. This was a trip for books, I can't wait to go back.
    Tag Update:
"This trout was originally seen by us on October 18, 1993, off Michigan Island, and measured in at 25.7 inches. It was captured at a spawning reef located 1/8 of a mile southeast of Michigan Island and was a female in spawning condition at that time. It was then recaptured on October 28, 2018, at Gull Island Shoal (located 3 ½ miles northeast of Gull Island), and had grown to 30.6 inches. This lake trout was of native origin and approximately 37 years old when you caught and released it."

Thanks for watching, its amazing to know how old these fish can get. From the data we got, we learned they grow about 1/4 inch a year, at least once they hit 25 inches.

What a great day of fishing. Those were some quality Lake Trout. Congrats on the tagged fish. I caught my first tagged fish ever this year. It was a 64" sturgeon on the Rainy River.

Did they give you any details on how old it was? Sturgeon are on my bucket list. We are planning a trip up to Rainy for next spring.

@@NetBuddyFishing yes they did. I'd have to look back in my video to see how old it was. I was up there with Cody from After 5 Outdoors. It was our first time.

Not all trips work out like that one. Well done guys. I did a little research on the "Apostles" going to have to try that sometime...

I have fished Coho's there twice now in the spring, but this was our first time targeting Lakers. I am sure we'll go back and the fish we found will have moved on, but it was a great day and a half!

First off what an exceptional trip for you and your crew!!
Days like that are gonna be talked about for years!
How deep of water were you in and what depth did that brown hit at if you don’t mind me asking?
And I think that tagged fish was still a lean, to me it looked pretty long and lean?
If you are willing to you should share what you find out on that tagged laker in a future video?
I have a bayfield DNR contact that gives pretty prompt responses if you are interested?

Brown was on a 7 color in about 140 on a blue jeans spoon. Got another brown on a 200 copper with a blue flasher fly. Most the lakers were in 115-140. I will reply on here when I get the details. I am not an expert at all, it could have been a lean. The only real way I know is when I filet them, and that one is still swimming!

@@NetBuddyFishing nice! Yah over my lifetime I’ve caught and released 5 tagged lakers!
Pretty interesting to hear the fish’s story! The oldest tagged one I got was a 30” fish it was initially tagged in 1988 at Michigan island shoal! It Was netted one time in another survey net and never heard from again until this last winter(2021) where I caught it!
That fish you caught with a tag is probably an ancient beast!

@@NetBuddyFishing wow!! What an exciting story on that fish!!
Kind of gives a good perspective how long it takes for those fish to age!
Thankyou very much for sharing that information back to us !
