    My dad and I used to kayak that coast and explore those caves when I was a kid. There was one day when the water was dead calm, and that first cliffside adjacent to the beach was really eerie because you could see all the massive boulders that had fallen off the cliffs and were just lurking there beneath you. Something about the size of them, and the sense of how small the boat was by comparison, gave me shivers. And then paddling further along you could see the bottom getting further and further away until eventually it was just the black depths. Haunting but amazing.

    The colour of the water against the colour of the rocks is just stunning, completely agree with your thoughts Kathryn! At 4:59, I thought the person in the front of the kayak was casually smoking a pipe whilst your guide talked about the rocks... then realised they were sun glasses 🤣 The kayaking through those caves and into the crevasse was so cool. There's something about having the confidence to do these sorts of things when there's a guide. I understand the nerves you had about the footage from the Go Pro whilst keeping up with the group but I thought this was a fab video, really enjoyed watching it ❤️❤️
    Also, it's funny hearing you talk about the price and then say 'but it doesn't include tip'. When you try and tip people in the UK outside of certain job roles (wait staff in restaurants, taxi drivers, housekeeping type roles are the socially accepted one) but anything else is met with confusion. We tried tipping some guides who took us coasteering in Cornwall earlier on this summer and they just didn't know what to do! 🤦‍♀️ In the end, we made the suggestion of using it for a round of drinks together after work and they eventually accepted it! 🤣🤣
    Do you guys find tipping in the US a bit of a minefield or is it 2nd nature because you grew up there? We Google EVERYTHING about tips when stateside.... how much is expected, how to leave the tip, is it someone we shouldn't tip (we were very pleased to find out via the internet that you don't tip National Park Rangers otherwise that would have been really embarrassing!) etc. I remember on our trip back in 2015, we Googled how much to tip housekeeping in a Vegas hotel and left the upper-end amount with a cheeky note asking if we could have a bit more coffee. When we returned to our room, we found a MOUNTAIN of coffee pods 🤣🤣 and it's just not 2nd nature to us over here. I remember as a kid, my parents would leave a tip for housekeeping at the end of our stay as we'd keep the same staff member for the full stay, then in the US you quickly learn to tip smaller amounts daily as the staff changes daily!

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  3 роки тому +2

      Hahahaha no pipe smoking on this tour! 🤣🤣 And we're glad you enjoyed the video! It was so hard to film while moving and listening and trying to actually enjoy it lol!
      Tipping is hard! Restaurants are straightforward (we have always been SO confused in the UK and EU how much to tip since typically you do less and we feel weird doing that), but for guides, we always struggle. The kayaking company had a blog post about tipping guides and the different percentages based on how much you enjoyed it, which helped a lot. We never want to be the ones giving too little of a tip! One time I was on a work trip in Vegas and I NEVER carry cash and they brought my bags to the room and I had no cash and felt horrible. So I found a coworker with cash and then tried to have someone at the hotel track down the person for me. So now we try to be more prepared with cash for any tours, but it's hard to remember!

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox 3 роки тому

      @@AdventuresofAplusK Yeah as a nation, we tip less, but I always stress it's not because we're stingey!! Until recently, 10% had been the norm, but a 'discretionary' service charge of 12.5% is often added these days. By law, they can't make you pay it, unless you are told before a meal that it's mandatory (often the case for parties of 8+ dining) but of course, being very British and never wanting to kick up a fuss, very few people dare to ask for it to be removed. I believe the smaller tip % is because owners have to pay wait staff the National minimum wage (as a minimum) and it's illegal to meet that hourly wage using tips (which I understand is common practice in many US states?) So in order for the business to have enough cash to pay the wages, the prices on the menu is higher. So the other 10-or-so-% of the tip that you're used to paying in the US, is still being paid, just as part of the food price. However if you over-tip, I'm sure no one would ever complain. I've done my share of waiting tables when I was younger and I know the pay is pitiful for the physical labour so I'd never not tip... no matter how terrible the service!
      Except for that one time...
      Like your Vegas horror story, I have one similar. Montenegro in 2013. It was our last night - next day we were driving across the border to Croatia so had spent all our Monteneg...rin? money and the restaurant assured us over and over, we could pay with card. Except at the end of the meal and they would not accept a tip by card. It's 8 years later and it still to this day haunts me! Were you successful in finding the staff member to give a retrospective tip?

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  3 роки тому

      That is true! Our waitstaff in the US get paid very little and rely on tips and we had heard other countries waitstaff gets paid a more livable wage. Having to deal with cranky customers sounds like a difficult job, they deserve those tips! haha
      Oh no! I feel like I have had similar issues with that, which makes me feel so bad! I tried to track them down and gave the tip to the concierge people to give to them, but for all I know they just kept it haha. I will pretend they got it and fell better hahah

    My Wife and I hiked all over the area that you kayaked in March of 2018. Look for Wisconsin's Ice Caves and you will be amazed, really awesome. That was our first trip to the Duluth, Mn. and Superior, Wi. areas and the whole area blew us away! We are all about the Rockies and the mountain west but this area has become one of our new favorite places. You should try the area where the start of the Mississippi River is. The Mississippi falls about a foot and a half over some rocks and you can walk in 2-2.5 foot deep water and only about about 5-6 feet wide for over a mile before it slowly grows to the very big body of water that it is where we live in Chester, Il. about an hour south of St. Louis, Mo. We love your videos, where you go and how you cover all the interesting details. I can only wish there were GoPro cams and such back in the early 1970's. What an perfect way to spend visiting all over this beautiful country. Check some of the videos about the Apostle Island Ice Caves. It's really hard to imagine the beauty walking over the 60-80 foot deep crystal clear blue water over the same spots you were!

    "It gets narrow back there, so DO NOT MESS UP OUR KAYAKS. Okay, let's go."
    I only made it into Wisconsin once, and briefly. In fact, I lived in Iowa but only got to see, oh, Chicago and Minnesota. You visited at the right time. I saw a football game in St. Cloud in December or January of 1990-something and am still thawing out.
    Keep on motorin', y'all. I have to live vicariously through you at the moment! :)
    (Parenthetically, of all the places you've gone, your Houston video is the second-most viewed?! As a resident, I smile, but I can see why. We are not used to people thinking much about us past the floods, the Rockets, and...uh.......that's it. But what good food we do have. So I think "my people" showed up to watch that one.)

      It's always very confusing which videos do well. City ones tend to do better, especially if it's a lesser visited city (like Sioux Falls or Little Rock), but usually it's a lot of locals that find it and then complain about the city or tell us we went to the wrong places hah.

    Pretty cool stuff eh? We missed you barely!!! Were there last month my friends! Devils Island was awesome! Loved those lighthouses too - I was NOT able to do the kayaking thing - but I was very curious how in the heck you were able to video, paddle, sightsee, cave explore...all together! Seriously...I am IMPRESSED!

      It was HARD! Hahah lots of one of us just paddling and us frantically trying to not get left behind 😂 Worth it though to share this video, but definitely was more of a challenge compared to normal!

    After melting today in the Ohio heat…all that water looks so refreshing! My brain is fried but I’ll try to leave a kind and thoughtful comment. Who knew Wisconsin has caves in the water like that?! It almost looks like something you would find in Vernazza Italy! These caves are so cool and beautiful! It was evident you guys were having a blast! Also Katherine had a good hair day! Not that she normally doesn’t…. Thanks for sharing guys! 🔥🔥🔥

    A quick question - We are going soon and I was wondering, why did you cross the pennisula to Cornucopia get your kayaking tour when they have outfitters in Bayfield that go to the caves on Madeline Island?

      It wasn't too bad! At first it felt like it would tip over haha, but we got used to it! We aren't used to being inside a kayak, but it was awesome to not really have our lower half get wet!
