    Good video, I think you should have scalped the grass with the lawnmower at the lowest setting first, then a run with the rake head before using the scarifier.

    A younger and rather more muscular neighbour spent a whole day raking moss from his lawn by hand, and told me how difficult and tiring it had been, so I bought this exact same model from Screwfix.
    It only took me about 20 minutes using the head with the flexible fingers to rake out enough moss to fill 3 large garden waste bags, so I consider it to be money well spent. I have also used the scarifier head on a section of the lawn that has since been turned into a wildflower meadow, and I was pleased with the results as it cut nicely into the turf when adjusted to the correct height.
    My only criticism is the collector bag, which is too small to be worth using, requiring such frequent emptying that it's easier not to use it and rake up the waste by hand afterwards.
    Considering that I only need to use it a couple of times each year and the amount of work that it saves I would definitely recommend one of these, especially for the 'more mature' gardener or those with a decent sized lawn. (Mine is about 80x20 feet)
    And the children are an absolute joy ! 😀

    Thanks for the video, I'm about to use mine today.
    Re: the grass being intertwined with thatch and getting ripped up as a result. Most websites / gardening UA-cam pros seem to recommend mowing the grass as short as possible before scarifying, I guess this would help

    Ha! The kids and the thatch eating dog were hilarious. Great video. Spent the last two days Scarifying, aerating, seeding and dressing our back lawn. Took me far longer than I thought (I used a fork to make holes which took 2 hours and nearly broke me) I can barely move now but after watering this evening I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Warm weather next two days but promise of rain on Thursday so fingers crossed.

    What adorable little girls. Got two daughters myself , 31 and 28 and an 18 month granddaughter and they've filled my life with countless memorable moments. As you say it was well worth the 60 quid to capture those moments. The Aldi scarifier I bought a couple of weeks back is still in the box and after watching your video could well be staying there! Lawn looks fine (newly laid last year) and I was going to scarify just for maintenance/prevention of issues but this has me thinking twice.

    Use it once a year (in April) only use the spring loaded tangs.
    Just like you ,I left the collection box off after it filled in 30 seconds and just takes up afterwards.
    I find it brings less up each year and as it pulls itself forward is not hard to use.
    I bought mine from a b&q closing down sale, and got it for £29.99p
    Highly recommended by me.

    I used it on the highest setting and it didn’t even reach the ground. I used the middle setting and it tore up the grass and soil. Pretty destroying it.
    Is this a machine issue? Am I doing something wrong?

    • @beyondutility
      @beyondutility  3 роки тому +2

      Which head was that? I guess the spring loaded tines aren't as rough as the solid metal ones. Also, it does make a mess, the grass doesn't look better afterwards but give it a few weeks and will come back.

    • @marcbaigrie2295
      @marcbaigrie2295 2 роки тому

      No, you're using it on ground that's too dry. You want to use this on soft soil not dry soil. So if it's tearing it up just give the lawn a bit of a soak and leave it for 20 mins then go over with this.

    • @marcbaigrie2295
      @marcbaigrie2295 2 роки тому

      Oh but that's only for the scarifier not the lawn rake. If it's the lawn rake you want to do it dry and not be looking to go into the ground, only scratch the moss and lateral growth.

    • @ciararespect4296
      @ciararespect4296 Рік тому

      @@marcbaigrie2295 I tried a lawn raker on my grass which is now spongy with a lot of thatch but it just left loads of straggly yellow grass. I think I'll use the cutter on it then reseed?

    • @marcbaigrie2295
      @marcbaigrie2295 Рік тому

      @@ciararespect4296 nah that's ok. What you're doing is bringing the crown on the plant higher to the surface. If you regularly cut once you've done that you'll get less lateral growth and more horizontal growth. You're probably best off reseeding the area if it looks bare and it's autn wherever you are.

    They're ALL the bloody same and they ALL do the job. None of this waffle in any of these videos is worth anything without addressing the questions of whether the item comes with either replacement tines or tine cartridge and whether spare ones can be bought.
    Most of them are DEAD once the tines wear out which doesn't take long and for most of them spare tines are unavailable. The manufacturers exploit the fact that hardly anyone asks this question. Most of these machines are built to be DISPOSABLE after about two years/uses.

    Cut the lawn on the mower's lowest setting first. You had the scarifier on it's lowest setting so it'll dig into the ground too much and work alot harder causing it to burn out, so move it up a notch.
    My lawn looked like this a few years ago, I wouldn't worry it's not gonna grow back much this late you also had some nasty grasses in there too. Do it again in very early spring or when temps get to 12-15c with the blades just roughing up the top of the soil in one direction, then again across at 90 degrees. Re-seed, feed, keep soil damp, not soaked untill grown back. Cut on highest setting for rest of year... It'll look so good you won't want anyone on it.
