Do You Really Have To Scarify Every Year?

  • Most lawns would benefit from scarifying every single year. There are always exceptions such as a Dwarf Rye grass that don't produce a lot of thatch, but in general, you won't do any harm by giving your lawn a run over once or twice a year with a scarifier.
    Once your lawn is performing well, you may also want to add in a verticut a couple of times or so a year. Sometimes referred to as a groomer, this is a very light tickle through the thatch layer. It's useful for taking out very very fine small amounts of thatch so that your lawn can be kept in a peak condition.
    So the answer is YES... you should scarify your lawn each and every single year !

    Hi Shaun ! Nothing to do with the video but I wanted to thank you for all your advice. My lawn was in terrible conditions after scarifying in spring and because of the droughts here in Brittany. Mid September I spent 2 days working on it (removing bad weeds, scarifying, topdressing, overseeding and rolling). With the rain we have had here now it looks like the Stade the France so thank you very much. Looking forward to fertilizing it now to look even better 🎉

    been bringing my lawn back from mostly weeds this summer and buying a cheap electric dethatcher has started to make a big difference. multiple passes over the entire lawn, repetitive over seeding, running the dethatcher over bare spots and spot seeding a few weeks later. along with lots of fiesta iron based weed killer. slowly winning the battle.

    I was hoping you may be able to advise, i have an overgrown lawn which hasnt really been cut in a little while, i believe it has weeds growing etc
    Would i be best to strim and mow it down, then deal with the weeding with some sort of product?
    Or strim/mow it down the scarify and overseed? How would i get the general lawn without weeds/moss etc?
    Any videos of overgrown lawn to perfect lawn?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      Hi! Good question.. so I'm guessing it's hard to see what's happening because it's so long. Personally I would just give it a nice tight cut first and get it onto a regular mowing schedule then assess what needs to be done. It's going to take a fair few weeks for it to recover from the beating but it will happen. You may just find it's actually not that bad.... otherwise if you are keen to get to side asap you can simply do the above then scarify aerate overseed and topdress.. ie full renovation.. but that's costlier for the customer and may not need all.of that. So for now I'd probably do the right cut, give it 2 weeks to allow any weeds to grow back a little then apply something like weedol along with an autumn fertiliser.. this'll make the most sense then you can look at doing any other stuff in spring
