How To Convert To Disc Brakes From V-Brakes On Mountain Bike
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- I show how to upgrade an old mountain bike from V-brakes to disc brakes. I replace the wheels, install rotors, calipers, new cables/housings, and adjust everything. The disc brakes I used are Avid BB5's. I used 160mm rotors. They are mechanical disc brakes, so are cable actuated. The Avid CPS mounting brackets I used were 0mm IS for the front, and a 20mm IS for the rear.

Outstanding video from the continuity and presentation to the perfect camera work. This has to be the most concise and fully explained video on this subject extant. Major Kudos to you Buddy! This could not have been done better.
Not only do you do interesting conversions and mods, you don't waste time by over-explaining things. You talk fast while you work fast! Very considerate of the viewer's time!
Thanks, RJ!
Great vid! I really like the way you use the old v-brake levers for "new" disc brakes.
good video. you saved me a lot of trouble,
I was considering trying to add discs to old wheels. No way, no room for extra hardware, thanks.
I like how he did this in his pajamas. That's exactly how I'll end up doing it.
Hadn’t noticed. Now I need to rewatch.
i just saw i video right before watching yours of a guy in asia using those exact same adapters you had for this same conversion but he actually installed 2 new hubs for 6 bolt disc brakes, apparently those adapters do work fine.
seriously, this channel needs more viewers, basically 8.5/10 times it is cheaper and less time consuming to just buy a new bike, BUT! what fun is that? I love the ridiculousness of all your conversions, and how you generally answer every question someone could have regarding: can I put this thing on this old thing?
Hey thanks great vid!! I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion and advice when it comes to adapters for non-disc break ready frames! Got a 93 kona cinder cone and heard a2z adapter works with some light modification😀
That's why I'm researching the same thing.
Thank you so much !!!
Almost 2 hrs but was worth it 😅😅😅😅
I had a Diamondback Response years ago. It was a good bike.
theyre TANKS! i love mine

What happen with your bike?

Holy Frek, u make understanding this so easy . Thx U for making this look less intimidating 👏🏽
Thanks for this video I was wondering if i needed new rice for a disc conversion kit.
In glass I found this video before taking the plunge lol
I got a nice deal on a pair of Mavic Cross max's and am considering doing this for a 1998 Specialized Stumpjumper. the dropout has a rack mount in it and it looks like it will work but im not 100% sure, really would like to use these wheels instead of parting them and just keeping the front.
I have that same bike but in blue. And I want to convert from v-brakes to disc. And this video was really helpful.
I used a disc brake center lock ring to use my old rims
thanks for this tutorial. looks pretty easy to me. i thought that it would have been harder cus i have heard that disc brakes are hard to install. :)
is there a way to go from v breaks to hydraulic without having the mounting points on your frame?
Buy the adapters
Get a better bike, your frame will be limiting you more than the breaks
Thank you for you teaching, greetings from Popayan Colombia.
Very nice video. Granted upgrading to disc brakes would mean upgrading to cassette which would to me give an opportunity to upgrading the deraileur, shifter, and wheels, and I may as well upgrade the front fork while I'm at it.
And all that translates to expensive. However for me being able to upgrade a bike I got as a gift would be worth it.
Seems there is no real solution yet if the frame / fork doesn't have the take-up screw fits.
I see you are mounting Avid BB-5, so you are not an enemy of cable-pull.
Despite of what all my friends told me, I use Avid BB-7 (with bigger pads than BB-5), and I am happy with these. No need ever to re-align ore something, just compensate the wear by time (wear is minimal, in fact - no need to have spare pads with you at a tour).
Thanks for the video, very informative.
Those wheels improve the look of bike so much
yea for real..could put a new updated stem and bars and saddle on there and it could really be sick..
I did this pretty much to a Diamond Back Topanga that I had. I put slightly better mechanical calipers on and replaced the hubs with a compatible disc hub as new wheels would have cost more than I wanted to spend. I didn't care that it would have taken more time to take the spokes off and re-lace them.
I got a deal on the wheels. $50 I think.
That is a good deal. Probably what I spent on new hubs and spokes.
Thank you so much you just saved me 30 bucks
nice video ,now I just need to get the money to do this.
I had a Sears 10 spd with rear disk brake in the early 70's I loved it,but it got stolen
Nice vid. You can heat red threadlocker with a shrinktube or paint remover electric heat gun, safer than a torch. What about buying all the cable parts? Do you buy the housing, cable, ferrules, and end caps as a kit? What styles and sizes of cables are there?
I buy all that stuff in bulk. Boxes of 100 cables, boxes of 100 feet housing, bottles of ferrules, etc.
Another very helpful and clear video thanks Andy
Great demonstration RJ
very cool. Thanks!!
My question is, why didnt you run double breaks (V+Rotors) with a set of dual cable levers?
Quick Question what do you do with most of your bikes you work on do you give them away or sell them?
Nice I love working on my bike
Great tutorial! Thx!
Great video -thanks!
How much are these brake kit cost and what dose it come with??? How much did you spent with all the parts??? Thanks
Where did you get the hardware and stuff from what website or where did you go to get the disc brakes and the mounting brackets?
Amazon, ebay, craigslist, etc, etc.
BRAVO! Excellent video!
Plz can you tell me how to upgrade to disc brakes if I don't have those slots on my bike frame
Love your vids! Thank you. I have subscribed.💕👍🏼
what the hub with 6 bolt holes call? so i can search it up. I'm thinking of switch the coastal wheels set and build the disc brake set up instead by replace the coastal to the new hub.
Search for a hub made for disc brakes.
Does anyone (especially from Canada) know where any cheap but quality parts for this whole conversion can be purchased?
where did you get all of the supplies (rotors, calipers, cables/housing)?
www.rjthebikeguy.com/faq/
RJ The Bike Guy thanks alot
Thank you so much !!!
How to true a disk brake rotors please make a video on it
Very informative thanks
Super usefull
You should grease your cables before running them through the housing. You could use better water resistant ferrules as well..............
Grease can be counterproductive with modern cable housing linings.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Not if you use grease designed for cables

20:57 the way he is adjusting the caliper could bend the disk.
That is how they are supposed to be adjusted!!!
is there an adapter if you have a bike like mine Giant cypress dx that does not have the caliper threaded holes like your diamond brand bike ?
Noting that you connect the left lever to the front brake, is this a US thing? All the bikes I've ridden have the front brake on the right side lever.
It's a most of the world thing. ua-cam.com/video/OR47XELYmQc/v-deo.html
@@RJTheBikeGuy Interesting video. I'll be sticking with my layout. Also as a motorcycle rider it would be crazy and dangerous for me to go with your layout.
I had no idea what those mounts on my bike were for... now i know
Does it matter if you toque wrench it?
It's best.
So putting disk breaks on a bike that is already equipped for disk breaks.
But didn't have disc brakes.
Alot of times bike companies will have different versions of the same model all using the same frame but with different components, such as entry level model with cheap components and an expert level model with more expensive components
Does anyone know what year this bike is
Are those BB5 or BB7?
Is this your first video on disc brakes?
Yes. I have had a bike with disc brakes for years, almost did a video on replacing the pads, but they the pads were fine, so I didn't replace them.
Pants!! you didn't convert a frame,/fork. you fitted Disc Brakes to a frame and fork that already has IS mounts. TIME WASTER.
Is it possible to do it without changing the rim
I assume you mean wheel. No.
Thanks man!😉🇵🇭
thank you so much for this!
Nice
Try installing a disc break kit without the mounting holes 🕳 for the calipers already designed on the bike 🤣
Link to the wheels?
Can u make please video how to put front disc brake to back pls
???? The calipers are the same.
@@RJTheBikeGuy so i dont need to buy extra things to put it to back?
@@esthelp751 The adapters are typically a different size front and back. The the calipers are the same.
@@RJTheBikeGuy so i need buy adapter And then i can change?
He should've pushed the rotor back when the bolts were snug, as to not leave any room for sliding
There is also that tip on park tool installation instructions on UA-cam
can I use the spoke from my old wheel?
Huh? For what?
when I change the hub
@@kanekiken1854 www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004H1UA9Y/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
Disapointing in that you just add parts to a frame already built to accept them, older bikes do not have rear disk mounts on and a solution to that needs to be explored.Forks are easiy swapped for disk forks but rears are more problematic.
Holy shit. You put gloves on!
is there absolutely no way to conver the old wheel hub to one that can recieve disc brakes?
Like an adapter or something?
Buy new wheels? or hubs?
Unless you know how to build wheels, have all the tools, and parts, it will be easier to buy new wheels.
I just use bottom of my shoe as a brake.
Most people in my country do that too i do that it awesome until i tried no shoes 😑
That is called a "plate brake"
People in Africa use their bare feet
How many rupies in India
Tricycles in my area are common, they use used tires as mud pads and brakes
Is it possible to use a disk brake ready rear hub but still use v-brakes?
bike looked more expensive when he put disc breaks on it
Giio because it is :) lol ;)
It is now...
@Ultranationalist right! Lol
It always looks more expensive then
Brakes.
I always wondered why my bike has those mounts ... maybe the next upgrade ?
same for me, but having the mounts is the bare minimum I thought. Sometimes there is so much stuff to replace that the effort becomes too expensive for my bike.
Great video. Very methodical. I have a MTB with disc brakes that I though were defective regarding their braking power. When I saw your video on the part that you adjusted the brake pads calibrating the discs' gaps with the pads and tightening the caliper bolts Bam! It hit me. I just loosened the bolts, adjusted the gaps, held the brake levers, tightened the bolts and wow! My bike braking power just became an absolute fix! Thanks.
Your a moron. Common sense sll bicycle brakes are adjustable
@@mmarczuk1976 yikes kinda hard reply..from someone replying to a year old comment.
P.S: "you're a moron" not " your a moron"
@@mmarczuk1976 who's the moron now
@@TheCubanN3rd I mean he's right though. Why would somebody buy / use a bike without even knowing common things about it?
@@wiliestrogue2924 To be fair, on first look, the braking mechanism will reveal itself as to how it works just by looking at it. It's more insulting to imply that someone would need knowledge to know that it can adjust
Ill stiick to my trek 4300 v brakes until I upgrade to a cannondale trail 8 later this year...Upgrading to disc costs as much as a bike lol
you are absolutely right. .new wheels, normally new gears, disc brakes, and sometimes even the frame doesn't have the adapters he is showing.. so it's almost new for everything!
*Some missed parts.. red reflector. No kick leg, the one in picture I got it separately. **Latest.Bike** Was easy to assembly. Instructions are clear. Very good idea to take it to a bike shop for tune up. If you have tools, knowledge and time easy to make it ready for a ride.*
I am so glad I saw this video, the bike shop where I bought my Giant bike 15 years ago said I couldn't upgrade and that if I wanted disk breaks, I needed to purchase a new bike.
After looking at my mounts on my Giant Left side fork and rear assembly, I was certain they are for disk breaks. Sure enough, that is exactly what they are for.
Now I am determined to make the change thanks to your video!
Another excellent video. I've learned so much watching you. Many thanks.
Honestly, your videos are the best instructive DIY videos on the internet. You’re very patient and detailed and you provide great instruction plus “how to” inspiration....Thanks!
This video was a real eye opener for me. I'm now looking at every used MTB in a whole new light. Checking for those mounting points. Thanks.
🙂 first thing I did - go to garage and look at my older mtn bike 🙁.
I got 2mountain bikes Gary fisher same models but 3years apart so I can change wheels with the newer one it also is disc ready but figures I like the older one better but the older one had a optional disc model so it can be upgraded but will need brackets in back and front
and also i like your videos because all of my bike are vintage bikes
Thanks RJ! I was waiting for this for a while. Great job as usual!
Thanks for the video RJ. Did something like this many years ago and I had to use one of them adapters for rhe rear - worked a treat.
Quick tip - cut back zip ties using a pair of nail clippers - they end up looking neater and no sharp edges or plastic sticking out to wreck your fingers on.
My advice is to use flush cutters with zip ties. They work a lot better
This is one of the most informative and useful bike modification videos ever.
Thank you for that, now I have confidence to do it myself! :)
Thanks! This is a real nice DIY video. I used it to convert my bianchi doss 4600 from v to disc brakes, it was really helpfull!
Great video! Your bike looks a lot cooler with the disc brakes on there. I like your explanations with all the part descriptions, torque measurements, and proper units as well as tricks to get the cables and bolts fitted properly. You rock!
thanks for the vid I have been thinking about doing this to my wifes bike but wasn't sure if I could tackle it great vid!!
why does he mix imperial and metric measurements?
Somethings are explicitly in metric, some things aren't. I live in the USA and we predominantly use the imperial system.
And in the United States we tend to get a mixed bag of metric and imperial on anything we work on, so mechanics of all stripes have to have both sets of tools usually.
IronheadOfScroteus I wish we were just taught metric. Being one of the only countries that uses the system is utterly stupid. Factory have to use both mechanics have to use both. Should have just used metric in the first place
@@rmaul2469 I agree. Sometimes as Americans, our urge to stand out reaches ridiculous levels.
You Imperial slime!
Looking forward to see those brake frame adapters videos!
you should just call it rim brakes to dicsc, so people with cantis can find it too :) Just a suggestiion :)
@Joby Fluorine Me.

I put a 80 cc motor on my bike
@Joby Fluorine I like the bike I've got now goes about 35mph. How fast does your bicycle go... when ever you can afford to put a motor on it then and only then can you came back and try again.
And the thing about my mom... not cool bro she's dead.

Overtly nerdy. Cleaning the discs with alcohol? Even my motorcycle is more forgiving.
Disc break is better than v break
Only if the disk brakes are hydraulic
Im building a monstercross/gravel bike...Im using road tiagra 4600 shifters. Are those shifters compatible with avid bb5 mechanical brakes? thanks.
