If this guy did video on open heart surgery il be confident i could do it
what about rotationplasty ?
Wow! Best brake tutorial ever! I'm a 70 yr old female with scant mechanical skills. After watching this, I fixed my brakes in about 15 minutes. Thank you so much!
thats awsome please help fix mine.
Same. 92 year old gardener, and after watching this video i have just built my very own spaceship.
It's hard to beat Park Tool instructional videos for bicy maintenance. 😊
@@cloudbase7799 no, it's really not
This was such a great tutorial I'm going to build a submarine and see the Titanic
Finally, a video that explains everything. This is your one-stop shop for all your brake education needs!
Superb clear tutorial. Everyone can learn from this style. No distracting background music, no ego or extraneous info. 10/10!
Great instructional video!
I prefer background music. There's too loud and there's just background music.
great comment, very precise and valuable however lacking in creativity 8/10
Calvin is by far the best tutor - so clear, so simple, so informative, so modest. How I wish I could have a whole week being tutored by someone like him. Thank you to Calvin and Park Tools for a great video.
I teach as well and draw inspiration from him and Keith Bontrager .

After 44 years of living, I finally understand how to fix my brakes!!!! THANK YOU for the great video!!!!
Ditto! Even down to the age!
Same, including age :-)
Ditto for my daughter !!!
Same here
Park Tool really did humanity a solid by making these videos. They serve not only as an excellent resource for people repairing bikes but also as a gold standard for instructional videos.
I hope the people who made these tutorials feel real good about what they did.
Nobody does better how to videos than Calvin at Park Tool.
With the pandemic, our only option was to buy a bike online and have it shipped to us. The brakes were jacked! This video enabled me to save a ton of money and time! Can't thank you enough!
so the thief just took brakes and left everything else lol ? what a loser
Undoubtedly the best and clearest demo plus explanation of how these breaks are to be set up. Thanks.
Its spellt "brayx"
@@jimgray3346 - 🤣 You and I both know it's spelled "brakes."
ya this was a great video
couldn't agree more 👏 👌

I can't believe I've gone my whole life without having this knowledge and doing a mickey mouse job of replacing my brake pads.
Thank you!
That video sets the standard for how all tuitional videos shud be
Great 👍🏼
Thank you !
Clear, straight and direct instructions. Unselfish transfer of know-how to all of us (cyclists). This is a golden standard in youtube tutorials. Keep up with good work. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I paid good money repeatedly to bike shops and services in Bucharest (Romania) and they simply couldn't make an satisfactory adjustment to my rear brakes, they were not centered, on one side the pad touched the rim slightly at every rotation on one spot (not in the bike shop but after a few km) and on the other it was too far away from the rim. I simply centered using the little screws according to your video and the brakes are the best now. How the guys, supposedly bike mechanics, were not able to do it is beyond me. They were either stupid or lazy or both. When I came back and told them the problem, they simply stated that my e-bike is atypical, it's too wide, and they couldn't do a better job. I did it myself using your video and I have two left hands, I'm a computer programmer, never the slight inclination to be a handy man. The explanations and the way your video was recorded, with the right angles, is simply AWESOME. You are the best! Like and subscribe!
You are the very first person who states the torque with which the brakes are mounted to the frame. Thanks for that.
Holy sweet Pete! This is, hands down, the ABSOLUTE BEST brake tutorial on UA-cam.
For one, yours is the only one to address the fact there are different styles, and tailored to them.
This was the only tutorial to help me pin point how to fix the pull on my brakes.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
I'll be sharing this with everyone I know who owns a bike with this brake system ❤️😄
Have tweaked my brakes every 6 months for last 3 years - every time will watch this video first - clear and very nicely put together. Thanks
Park Tools is and has always been the OG of bike maintenance and repair.
You just completely explained the brake problem on my new folding bike, thank you PARK TOOL IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST.
This is the first time I was able to properly adjust V brakes just in a ten minutes
Wish I had these videos back in the 90's when I was still a kid running my bike all day. At least I know now how to fix my brake pads like a real man.
Somebody give this man a raise! And a platinum youtube button and a mountain of $$$. He deserves it.
After watching tons of videos on brakes, this one is the best. UA-cam algorithm is whack for not recommending it at the top.
Thank you! This is the clearest and most straightforward instructional video!
Extremely helpful video, my bike has been sitting idle for months in the garage because it needed a new inner tube and brake replacement and brake cable adjustment. The task was so daunting I have been putting it off for months but with your excellent tutorial I have mange to change the tyre put on new brake pads and leaving the rest till tomorrow. It's giving me a great feeling of achievement getting this done
Cheers
Thank you, that´s the way professional teaching works: calm, step by step with a gentle voice.
I wish this person should teach engineering students and every student will become an engineer who can make miracle in their field.
Never seen anybody explaining such tricky thing so simply. Thank you for this amazing practical demo and sharing. GBUA
Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been struggling to find the answer to how to adjust my brakes cuz I’m still learning about bikes and how to fix them up. I’ve been pointed to adjusting that tension screw by damn near everyone, but I knew that wasn’t the problem. Seeing the tension on the line setting the brakes too close is what the real issue is! You said it bang on “if you set the brakes too close if the rim gets out of true it’ll rub on it.” That’s the part is needed to adjust!! Goodness gracious I cannot believe it took me this long to hunt down the answer and also the best and easiest way to understand it. I’m literally about to go outside and adjust my brakes before I head out on another ride. Bless you for being so clear and simple!! Amazing teacher ✨🙏🏽✨💯
Having the rim off the tire was awesome for visibility. I was confused at first and then I went to do this on my bike and it make perfect sense.
Perfect video, I brought my phone into the garage and watched the video while fixing my brakes. Very easy to follow and helped me get back on my bike!
Me too
I’m capable at general engineering repairs but know very little about bikes. These videos are very well produced, clear video, audio and content, and are exactly what I need. Many thanks (from the UK).
this is the best tutorial ; clear pictures of what is being done - made me understand what gets done when a bike shop does a tune up, Now I can see if they
actually did the job .
I’d consider myself technically inclined, but with no experience with bike brakes. I was feeling totally lost until I found this. Thank you!!
Snap !
A big thanks to you all in parktool company :-)
Thank you for your energy, this vid allowed me to work out that not all brakes of this type are exactly the same, very helpful...
Clear, instructional video. Thank you! I've been riding a bike for half a century but only just begun to tackle my own repairs. William Reeves' comment was the final solution for my rubbing brakes.
Excellent guide to make brakes to work the way they're supposed to. I remember when I was killing myself while going down a steep hill without properly adjustment on my bicycle's brakes. Had to stop the bike, by using my shoe sole as a breaking pad right on the tire's surface. That was close enough! Thank you for sharing this very helpful video. No matter what we're not riding a Motorcycle or a car, braking is a very serious business. Literally, you're saving people lives.
Bingo! Exactly
The procedures are broken up into logical stages and the steps are clearly explained. The purpose of specialised bike tools is demystified and the components of the V Brake are helpfully identified. A great video for anyone wanting to learn about bicycle maintenance and mechanics.
Saved myself $40 bike shop repair by tweaking brake myself with your clear, concise video. Thanks!
Even late middle aged ladies can learn how to fettle a bike watching YT videos. I’ve long had bikes with caliper brakes and my new bike has V brakes - they were driving me nuts pulling to one side - now I’ve fixed them! Thanks 👍🏻🤗
Really extensive. Well done, guys. These V-brakes are very common on folding bikes, which are becoming popular where I live. I've always wanted a definitive guide to adjusting them, and it seems this is the leading candidate. Cheers!
You've earned my sub! Deployed here in Germany and the main mode of transport here on post are bicycles. Given I've built my bike from broken bikes many adjustments were needed for proper functioning. Your videos are very helpful and simple enough for the average guy to follow along with. Thanks for the great work and keep it up!
thank you your video showed me how to install V brakes easy. I did it and they work great. PS I'm a 71 year old woman
Tried to replace the Calipers before I watched this. Boy did I get it wrong.
Thanks for the Lifeline.
Hands down, best bike brake adjustment video on UA-cam. I watched every one, and none of them are as clearly shot and explained as this one. I feel like I should pay you guys. I successfully fixed the brakes of the 2 new bikes we just bought from the store (cheap bikes, lousily put together). Thank you so much!
Using a knotted rubber band as a spacer to ensure proper toe is a brilliant idea, thanks! I had been using a business card (sometimes folded), but it was a pain to hold it in place while making the adjustments. A hands-free spacer should make the tedious process of adjusting my brakes easier, I can't wait to try this!
Thanks Park Tool for all the excellent videos.
This channel offers so much value for free
This is better than any other video on adjusting v brakes.
i upgraded one of my bikes from a horrible cheap cantilevers to a nice tektro v brakes, the braking power is awesome, they're even better than lots of mechanical disc brakes, thanks!
Fantastic video. I was getting frustrated trying to 'just do it' on my own. Then I found this video. It helped me install the brake cables on my new bike in a jiffy. Love that he shows what not to do as well while he's going along (e.g. "this is too tight..."). I learned that it's still more art than science in terms of getting them set just right at the end. But this is the best video out there on the subject. Nice close-ups and shows you exactly what you need. Great job and thank you for posting this. Very very helpful!
This channel is super under-rated , the steps are clear and well organized.
Now I understand how to correctly centre the brake pads on the rim, awesome 😁
I have watched a few videos on V brakes adjustment, but this is the best ! Clear and concise. U have made my day dude, thx!
Really well explained and clear images. I've always "blagged it" with my brakes, and when they got too bad the bike went for a service. Now I can confidently set them up myself. Thank you!
Great video on replacing the linear brake calipers. Most useful was the centering of the brake calipers.
Amazing tutorial. I had this basic bike repair course and the instructor got me confused, he was very fast at explaining stuff and move his hands a lot. Your explanation was short but straight to the point. Thanks a lot
Best V brake video I've seen and I've looked at A LOT of them. Nicely done!!
Agree 💯
@Carlton Lalla why is this everywhere
Well done! One of the best videos on brake replacement and adjustment I have seen.
I absolutely agree with anyone else that stated ; this video is hands down " THE " ABSOLUTE BEST VIDEO PERIOD ! EXCELLENT WORK MY FRIEND , IF ONLY YOUR VIDEO WOULD BECOME THE BATE BONES STANDARD FOR OTHERS TO SUBMIT THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS , THIS WORLD OF WASTED TIME ON WASTED VIDEOS WOULD CEASE TO EXIST ! MY I SAY IT WITH THE UP MOST SINCERITY, THANK YOU ! THANK YOU SO SO VERY MUCH , KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK !
Excellent! I wish there were videos this good for all of my home bike repairs and upgrades. Now, I'm excited about upgrading my Road bike from Tektro to Avid Single Digit 7s!
Absolutelly the BEST instructional video on this braking system I have EVER seen! Bless you sir. I SO wish I had a teacher like you in school. Thanks again!
What a great video!!!! Thank you for the PERFECT video. As I set up my first v-brake, this video answered all my questions and more. Well done video images and audio, narration and skill of mechanic is excellent.
No one can explain like this.no doubt about v-brake.nice explanation.
The best video . Cristal clear video and perfect explanation. as if it is installed right before your eyes. It helped. Thanks.
Thank you for this video! It is very detailed and easy to follow. I had been fighjting with my brakes for days now trying to get them to stop rubbing on the rim, I had a friend tel me that the rim was bent, i dont think its bent i think the brake arms arent the right tension. now i know to loosen one screw but tighten the other! Thank you!
Thank you thank you the video was excellent. Concise and professional. I followed your instructions verbatim and it worked just fine.
I did not have to buy anything, cables or pads . your video is complete and it tells you the order in which the adjustments were made. Great job. 100 thumbs up.
Cleaning and lubing the bushings is especially important on old brakes.
I've spent countless hours until I figured that out myself and I'm I'm actually a bike mechanic. I learned everything about hydraulic disc brakes, but couldn't get old stuff to work. :)
I was going to follow your video made for ... can't remember the name of brake type anymore ... until I realised that mine is a linear V type. Really, really helpful. Thank you indeed.
Oftentimes we need a very good, complete and understandable explanation to do things. I've found that explanations in this channel. I'm very thankful
this video is so good, end to end, simple, perfectly paced, easy to follow. you helped me fix my breaks. Awesome!
This video is an excellent tutorial for anyone that needs to fix their “brakes”; sadly Calvin did not address fixing your “breaks”.

I just bought my first bike to commute and was trying to figure out how to tweak the brakes. With this video i got from a complete newbie to a full undestanding on how to easily tweak and understand the break system of my bike on the go. Thanks!
Yes, definitely the best video I’ve seen on brake setup and maintenance.
Thank you for publishing such high quality instructional videos.
Fantastic..This guide helped me set up my V brakes perfectly. Thank you sir!
Really appreciate it when Calvin said: N.m for torque ;-)
From a novice...this is an excellent tutorial. Thank you so much. Very visual and easy to follow.
best video series ever, clear and informative, plus links to other video, great effort.
At 9:32 . It's easier, if you don't have a 4th hand tool, to disconnect (your brakes allow for this) the return springs of the brake arms. That way you don't have to fight against their tension while trying to make a very fine adjustment of the arms' position. Afterwards, just reengage the springs. This is a great video!
These videos are really second to none. Fantastic job as usual. Thanks so much for sharing.
This is by far the best video I saw about the subject. I was struggling to correctly adjust my brakes, but with all your tips, not anymore. :)
An excellent video - really helpful - thank you. Greetings from Scotland.
Theses are the best videos to learn from thanks man
Loved this tutorial! It showed me how to fix my sons breaks without taking it to the bike shop!
Very well done. Park Tool rocks. I will have to look it up, but you are a publicly traded company I am buying stock. All your videos are great and Calvin you have saved me a TON of money on bike repair. Thanks again.
Complete and very thorough explanation. Loved this vid too. Professional.
Love this walk through, thank you.
Thanks for the info. I was driving myself crazy over my new break adjustments.
i was just about to rebuilt a city bike i found in the trash and was wondering how to proceed! i learned so much more than "how to", i learned why ! best program ever. Calvin rocks.
This is what I was looking for, just didn't know what it was called.
I’ve been riding about as long as I could walk, and could always handle everything myself-except derailed and brake adjustments. I guess I should learn how to adjust my derailers next.
back when i bought my first bike of somewhat decent quality (bianchi lynx) there was no youtube.
BUT----- there was the first edition of park's big blue book.
i used it to guide me and it was about as good as a video.
4 years later i bought a new pcs-10 stand, some tools and a few extra pieces.
life got very good with park giving me the confidence to do my own work.
the repair stand does extra duty as a christmas tree. the head and tips of the feet form
a triangle for a string of small lights. one packet of tinsel fills it out.
it has been my tree for the past 14 years.
I never got how bike brakes had to be adjusted and/or fine-tuned! This video is a game changer!!!
Simple, yet very informative. Well done!
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwesome video
I can't get mine centered, always rubs on one side. Tried adjusting the screws but makes no difference.
What model do you have? Double check the wheel is fairly centered, then re-check the mounting bolt.
Do you mean bike or brakes? The bike is a Viking ebike, no idea on brakes. Just left them rubbing for now and push them with my foot to center them.
If no amount of screw adjustment will do it could be that the spring on one side has gotten too straight. If you disengage the spring on the weaker side (the side that's rubbing) you can manually bend it out with your hands to increase its tension, then re-engage and adjust. Hope that helps.
William Reeves
Try loosening the mounting bolt and centering your brakes manually !
I am soo thankful for someone doing things with this much excellency
Well done. I have an older Cannondale hybrid with these brakes. Always struggled with adjustment until I found this very helpful video. Thanks.
12:43 perfectly centered , 12:54 misaligned again. I am so frustrated with my Vbrakes in my cycle. I keep aligning them but after few uses, they again pull each other and kiss the rim causing perpetual braking.
Don't buy a cycle with Vbrakes, else you spend your entire life aligning them.
Works on my rig. Try tightening the pinch bolt more, and try lubing the cable housing, the cable can get stuck in the housing and pull on the brakes.
@@KungFuBroFist I have the same issue as @Gunjan J. It's like every second day with these v brakes.
Is there a video that can help me with removing the cable, lubing the cable housing, and then re installing them again?
Sounds like Al Bundy went into bike maintenance after he left the shoe sales business.
Thanks, this is a great channel for learning basic care. I had poor and squealing from brakes. I applied what I learned on this video and suddenly have great breaking on the front with no squeal. Calvin, you are a great tutor..
Thank you.
I needed to see how the cable attached, and then I was able to fix my kid's bike in 5 minutes.
Pff, i'm useless..
I hate V-brakes. I ride bikes whole my life, but repair the most simple things, no..
Maybe i should make a video, and get many laughs. At least i did something usefull!
