THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I paid good money repeatedly to bike shops and services in Bucharest (Romania) and they simply couldn't make an satisfactory adjustment to my rear brakes, they were not centered, on one side the pad touched the rim slightly at every rotation on one spot (not in the bike shop but after a few km) and on the other it was too far away from the rim. I simply centered using the little screws according to your video and the brakes are the best now. How the guys, supposedly bike mechanics, were not able to do it is beyond me. They were either stupid or lazy or both. When I came back and told them the problem, they simply stated that my e-bike is atypical, it's too wide, and they couldn't do a better job. I did it myself using your video and I have two left hands, I'm a computer programmer, never the slight inclination to be a handy man. The explanations and the way your video was recorded, with the right angles, is simply AWESOME. You are the best! Like and subscribe!

Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been struggling to find the answer to how to adjust my brakes cuz I’m still learning about bikes and how to fix them up. I’ve been pointed to adjusting that tension screw by damn near everyone, but I knew that wasn’t the problem. Seeing the tension on the line setting the brakes too close is what the real issue is! You said it bang on “if you set the brakes too close if the rim gets out of true it’ll rub on it.” That’s the part is needed to adjust!! Goodness gracious I cannot believe it took me this long to hunt down the answer and also the best and easiest way to understand it. I’m literally about to go outside and adjust my brakes before I head out on another ride. Bless you for being so clear and simple!! Amazing teacher ✨🙏🏽✨💯

Excellent guide to make brakes to work the way they're supposed to. I remember when I was killing myself while going down a steep hill without properly adjustment on my bicycle's brakes. Had to stop the bike, by using my shoe sole as a breaking pad right on the tire's surface. That was close enough! Thank you for sharing this very helpful video. No matter what we're not riding a Motorcycle or a car, braking is a very serious business. Literally, you're saving people lives.

Using a knotted rubber band as a spacer to ensure proper toe is a brilliant idea, thanks! I had been using a business card (sometimes folded), but it was a pain to hold it in place while making the adjustments. A hands-free spacer should make the tedious process of adjusting my brakes easier, I can't wait to try this!

Love that he shows what not to do as well while he's going along (e.g. "this is too tight..."). I learned that it's still more art than science in terms of getting them set just right at the end. But this is the best video out there on the subject. Nice close-ups and shows you exactly what you need. Great job and thank you for posting this. Very very helpful!

At 9:32 . It's easier, if you don't have a 4th hand tool, to disconnect (your brakes allow for this) the return springs of the brake arms. That way you don't have to fight against their tension while trying to make a very fine adjustment of the arms' position. Afterwards, just reengage the springs. This is a great video!

Very well done. Park Tool rocks. I will have to look it up, but you are a publicly traded company I am buying stock. All your videos are great and Calvin you have saved me a TON of money on bike repair. Thanks again.

I’ve been riding about as long as I could walk, and could always handle everything myself-except derailed and brake adjustments. I guess I should learn how to adjust my derailers next.

back when i bought my first bike of somewhat decent quality (bianchi lynx) there was no youtube.
BUT----- there was the first edition of park's big blue book.
i used it to guide me and it was about as good as a video.
4 years later i bought a new pcs-10 stand, some tools and a few extra pieces.
life got very good with park giving me the confidence to do my own work.
the repair stand does extra duty as a christmas tree. the head and tips of the feet form
a triangle for a string of small lights. one packet of tinsel fills it out.
it has been my tree for the past 14 years.

I never got how bike brakes had to be adjusted and/or fine-tuned! This video is a game changer!!!
Simple, yet very informative. Well done!

I can't get mine centered, always rubs on one side. Tried adjusting the screws but makes no difference.

What model do you have? Double check the wheel is fairly centered, then re-check the mounting bolt.

Do you mean bike or brakes? The bike is a Viking ebike, no idea on brakes. Just left them rubbing for now and push them with my foot to center them.

If no amount of screw adjustment will do it could be that the spring on one side has gotten too straight. If you disengage the spring on the weaker side (the side that's rubbing) you can manually bend it out with your hands to increase its tension, then re-engage and adjust. Hope that helps.

Try loosening the mounting bolt and centering your brakes manually !

12:43 perfectly centered , 12:54 misaligned again. I am so frustrated with my Vbrakes in my cycle. I keep aligning them but after few uses, they again pull each other and kiss the rim causing perpetual braking.
Don't buy a cycle with Vbrakes, else you spend your entire life aligning them.

Works on my rig. Try tightening the pinch bolt more, and try lubing the cable housing, the cable can get stuck in the housing and pull on the brakes.

@@KungFuBroFist I have the same issue as @Gunjan J. It's like every second day with these v brakes.
Is there a video that can help me with removing the cable, lubing the cable housing, and then re installing them again?

Thanks, this is a great channel for learning basic care. I had poor and squealing from brakes. I applied what I learned on this video and suddenly have great breaking on the front with no squeal. Calvin, you are a great tutor..

    Pff, i'm useless..
I hate V-brakes. I ride bikes whole my life, but repair the most simple things, no..
Maybe i should make a video, and get many laughs. At least i did something usefull!
