So true. When I first met my wife 20 years ago, I would sit at at my piano and she would just sit on a chair and listen. I would say it was my beautiful playing that drew her to me. She would argue it was the wine!!! I can lose myself for hours at a piano.

One of the most beautiful and valuable lessons in music I have ever seen and heard! In my perfect world, you would be one of my three Besties, live next door and we would do lessons at daytime and jam together at a local pub every night. You are a wonderful artist and a gem in the music world. Thank you so much for sharing your skill and wisdom with us. Love and light from Khao Lak in Thailand 🇹🇭❤️☀️🏖🌴🥥🐘🌈

Such a great human being this guy..... Dear Matt, every day you share with us is quite a blessing to guys like me, who don’t handle music theory, scales and movements like I would... Your kindness, your gentleness and constant humble attitude still weight me to keep up and still have faith in myself and my capacities. The last take of this video, see you brightly smiling and smoothly playing in a faded light, that’s what i call hope in a storm, strongness in a hardweaknessing world. Thank you Sir. May God keep blessing you and those who make you who you are. Stay safe Matt !

I don't know about you, but my father brought me up with that old-fashioned 'boys don't cry' nonsense. To this day, I find it very hard to properly cry and so I think, when you've had that bad day, playing is like crying and just letting everything, all that anger, frustration or bad-feeling, flow out of you and bring you peace.

guitar is my main instrument of 18 years now, and for some reason it's the one instrument for which UA-cam teachers address the emotional aspects of playing on a regular basis. This deserves more adequate discussion for learners of anything pertaining to music, truly.
And in the mix of this moment in which technical possibilities are so vast, particularly to those skilled on keys, it's all the more pertinent to keep in touch with the heart of it all.
And in light of all the dynamic range which keyboards can cover, to marry theory and technique with personal feeling can pivotally take musical possibilities from endless configurations of meters and timbres, to absolutely profound vistas of human expression.
    Thank you.

Wow...so glad UA-cam brought me here...I have been thinking of ways of improving my flowz when playing and I think I got the point...every instrument has a different vibe...be the conduit... don't just vamp it...let it flow...thanks so much for this...it's definitely for keeps...Thumbs up all the way

This is SUCH a valuable lesson on feel and emotion. I really relate that experience of sitting down and playing after a hard day. Music helps get through the challenges, and it is a great spiritual thing to share. In many ways, feel is the most important part of music.

Beautiful, thanks. It's such a treasure to get in the zone and let something flow through you. They used to talk about genius as something that would come and pay you a visit when you were ready, like a spirit. It's only relatively recently that people have become referred to as being a genius themselves. I much prefer the idea of a genius floating around waiting for someone to be truly in the flow to use them as a conduit 🙂

Hi matt, just seen you on an advert on UA-cam so thought I would join you, big fan of Jamiroquai, had no idea you played with the band so delighted that you are on here sharing experience. We have a Yamaha Motif xf6 white anniversary via GarageBand and Logic Pro. Also just started playing piano with ES110W 88 key, late in life but never too late. I have started playing and extend and flow as you describe, it really is fun to do and helps with coordination if nothing else. Thank you for sharing, terrific!

I love listening to you play and taking your advice as best I can. I’m nowhere near the keyboard player or advanced theorist as you, but I’ve played drums for quite a few bands, a few US tours nothing major.
I always search UA-cam in hopes of finding a breakthrough with music theory, as I’ve got a lot of gaps to fill coming from education in rhythm only. I have about 25 years of experience with rhythm and can play all sorts of genres and play to any room, but coming over to the melodic side of things has been overwhelming for at least a decade since I picked up a guitar and really tried to teach myself what I could. Still searching for all the answers.
I’d love to hear what your educational background was before you were a keyboard genius. ❤

This is so beautiful. It reminds me of painting. I often feel that what I choose to leave out is important. People can fill in the gaps with imagination. With colors as well. What to use and what not to use to create a feeling. It is hard to explain but I feel that there is a kind of similarity to music.

I highly recommend modulating stuff with velocity, slight vowel filters can almost literally make your melodies speak. Combining different e-pianos that blend enough to form singular lines yet stand out enough can have this effect without even using vowel filters, some low notes on piano 1 will sound like ah, piano 2 ooh, high ones on 1 ee, 2 ah etc., this becomes strangely apparent when you play some of these e-pianos next to each other, like it wasn't even there before. (Those two different sounds can also respond uniquelly to velocity) Vocoders too, load up samples on a midi file and correspond them to notes etc., something like FL's layer function is great for that.

Space... I call it the power of silence. Mastering silences is an art in its own. No matter if it's music or during a speech or a presentation, it's a particular art of expression that leaves room for thought, contemplation and anticipation at the listener's end.

Often when I play from the hip, undirected for half an hour as you describe, I'll come up with something that inspires me and the whole process is interrupted by wanting to record it or find something to go with it. Invariably it's impractical at that time and the idea and my flow is lost! Conversely, if I sit down consciously to write, inspiration is less forthcoming. I've tried to get in the habit of always having a tape recorder or my DAW running, but even that can be a buzz kill. I'm never sure whether to stay in the moment and let the ideas go, trusting there'll be others when I need them, or be more disciplined and get the idea down, even if it does mean that that moment of play becomes one of work.

I was impressed by how you can adapt your playing for each instrument patches! The guitar sounded so realistic hh.
On violin, I approach a lot the "feeling" part by thinking as if I was saying a "phrase": like a question? then an answer, etc. The musical phrase then takes care of itself with the feeling that comes with it.
