Thing about Matt is he only has to touch the keyboard and you're instantly rocking back and forth in your chair no matter how simple the thing he's doing. They say those that can do and those that can't teach. This video is one big exception to that rule. I can listen to what you play and what you say all day, Matt.
I would love a video where you go over your left hand technique and ideas for that! You always play these awesome basslines with it and it would be cool to hear how you think about playing bass over chords like that. This video was so great, thank you!
Matt is a great teacher as well as always having a really nice feel for timing. Watch and feel his left hand--it's always great no matter what he's playing. No matter how good of a feel we might think we have, there's always more to learn!
This is fantastic instruction. Explaining feel isn’t the easiest thing to do let alone narrate whilst doing it. One of the finest channels I’ve encountered on UA-cam.
I am glad you are doing this. I feel like a lot of funkiness is being lost as musicians from the 60’s and 70’s are dying off and classic recordings are hard to find and out of print. Thanks keeping the FUNK alive!
Matt is all the more admirable as he actually has nothing to gain from showing us how to do this. Many thanks for taking your time for us. Phil from France.
Matt I watched this two years ago, my time was all over the place! I listened to so much d’angelo and started to slowly get better. This vid saved my ass! Another video on fitting in with band would be gold. Thanks brother
Jeez - imagine have this level of skill, funk and groove in your veins. Such an iconic sound too - Jamiroquai are my most favourite band of all time, seen them live 4 times, and can never tire of these sounds. Matt Johnson on keys, and Stuart Zender/Nick Fyffe/Paul Turner on bass.... liquid gold for the ears.
Matt! I've been a fan of Jamiroquai since 'Planet Earth back in the early 90s. I saw you guys at Glastonbury '97. I was lucky enough to go to Salford Uni in 2014 at the age of 41 and as a result, I went to a masterclass done by Cory Wong at Band On The Wall but more importantly I not only got to meet a member of the Vulf I also got to meet Kevin Gastonguay, he even gave me a mini lesson on the diminished/altered/super locrian gashizzle. He blew my mind in 10 minutes! Your videos are having a similar effect on me and I can't thank you enough for these videos. From a fellow Englishman, thankyou so very much, you're an amazing player and truly an inspiration to me. Thankyou very much indeed my good fellow! Oh.......I got a 1st in Jazz Performance and Arranging under the tutorship of Tim France and Robin Dewhurst and I now teach privately which after playing since I was 7, was a lifelong dream and now I'm doing it! Beats delivering parcels in a van which was my job in another life. Thanks man, all you do is very much appreciated. Oh........btw........you're an effing MONSTER!!
I just came across your channel yesterday, and I just popped in to tell you how grateful I am for these videos (I don't even care that they never seem to be in focus, lol)! Thank you, Matt!
I absolutely love Matt’s ability to play 3 plain sounding triads (slightly ho hum) that, left hand added turn into wonderful little pocket grooves with ever-shifting chord structures.
I am just a novice, but it is so nice and inspiring to watch you do your stuff and explaining what you are actually doing. Thanks Matt. And besides the fact you are truly a professional you are such a nice guy :) which also makes it more amusing.
Absolutely inspiring. Jamiroquai's music has inspired my life long love of funk! Born in 87 and remember when my older brother brought Traveling Without Moving into our room when it released in the early 90s. In fact, my brother sent me here to listen and follow, now time to work on my keys!
This is amazing. I no longer need to have to contemplate having to learn complex classical piano pieces on confusing manuscript to crack this instrument. Johnson makes so much sense and introduces hella scope for improvising without the need for sixteen years of ABRSM examinations.
This is such a great channel. He does so many things that help me know what I'm doing right, and then does another 10 minutes of pointing out what I should do next. Each video is gold.
Soooo glad i found your video and I've watched a few others. I've now subscribed !!!!.12.50 onwards reminds me of Boogie Oogie Oogie by Taste Of Honey. Really loved the Jill Scott Getting In The Way Neo Soul chords and the Chaka Khan riff in one of your other videos. Bravo and a big Thank You !!!!
I know it's not your style to show off, but at the end of some of the videos it would be really cool to see you just go off on one and showcase your genius
The last bit somewhat sounds like the early days Level42 vibe when they primarily focused on intrumental acid jazz, really groovy. And helpful Matt! 🤙🏻
Yeah! Love early super funk level 42... that first drummer was pocket for sure with open hand vibe! And of course the master Mark King and rest of the original cats. Word up for L42!
Thanks a lot Matt. Your are not only a brillant keyboardist but also a great teacher! I am analysing all your tutorials in slow motion ( both audio and video) and i ve learned a lot. i never had the chance to learn music when i was a kid ( i am 49) and tanks to your chords and licks i can improvise , i have made “mine” a few of them and i can play for hours. For the first time i am not doing covers of music from others ( both contemporary or classical) but i can start to play what i feel. i have learned many tricks analysing your videos and the way you play . Even when you make a review of your gear ( like the Vibanet for instance ) i analyse your patterns and play them with other instruments. I have an OBXa and i was very interested with your Moog One video because the sound of the Moog one was disappointing in others videos on utube but if you think the Moog One can “” eat at the same table’’ than the Obxa i have my answer!!! thanks a lot again for your empathy. Stay safe
Ooooh my God Matt! i can find the words to thank you for this video! it's all i was dreaming about to learn about playing keyboards! Thank you so so much to share your experience and your talent! God bless you Matt!
Theres the basic ingredients in that one video for another great album. I'm really enjoying your " With the Music" Album. Thanks Matt for sharing your talent with us all.
Your videos are so inspiring. You're such a good keys player and such a role model for people wanting to learn more, explaining it very logically and without ego
Just watching this after the left hand basslines video... Primarily a drummer and producer but have been working on melodic stuff lately and these vids are fantastic! Feel like I know a lot of what you are talking about but you deliver it all in such an inspirational way... Thank you so much Matt!
Great video! I like how you explained that you have to think like a percussionist when playing very rhythmic keyboard parts. As a drummer, this is something I can really relate to, I feel that my drumming background over the years has helped me improve my keyboard playing. Love the new album!
This is fire! I'm so glad you referenced Dr Dre because his innovation of G Funk was heavily influenced by funk music and his tempos and eighth note emphasis along with distinct bass lines and leads have always been super groovy to me. Im loving all the flavors of this funk realm.
Yeah the laid back option. Another great song to have that, imo, is Bootsy Collins's Don't Let 'Em. The key/horns in the end are almost painful laid back. Great video Matt
This is all great stuff. You should come up with a course on rhythm keyboards. There are many great concepts here. Keep up the great work. Hopefully you can make more videos like this!
Thank you Matt excellent tutorial. To be honest its not the style of music I usually play but there are lessons and principles here that can be applied in many styles. Thanks again for taking the time.
I don't think people realize that being able to talk and explain what you're doing while playing in time is a skill on its own. Love this!
Ha ha was thinking the same..he's a professional!!
Amazing complicity within basics.
Totally.
When I
Try and
Talk while I
Play
It sounds
Like this
😂😂
@@mixolydian2010 How else are you going to yell at the drummer to keep time? lol
An artist
What's the catch? Seriously? The legendary Matt Johnson sharing his knowledge for free?
Matt you are a legend for dropping these gems
Yes he's a true gent 👍🏼
Sometimes the algorithm recommends a channel that is out of this world :-)
Thing about Matt is he only has to touch the keyboard and you're instantly rocking back and forth in your chair no matter how simple the thing he's doing. They say those that can do and those that can't teach. This video is one big exception to that rule. I can listen to what you play and what you say all day, Matt.
You are understated and humble, an example to us all.
I’m a sax player but play some piano too, I can’t believe this is available on UA-cam for free. Matt is a legend.
Matt, I feel guilty about watching your videos for free. 😅 This should be part of the Berklee curriculum.
7:50 Oh I do feel it, These lessons are so extremely valuable Yet I could just listen to you jamming with the simplest of beats for hours.
Same here!
Such a funky take on Feel Like Making Love
I would love a video where you go over your left hand technique and ideas for that! You always play these awesome basslines with it and it would be cool to hear how you think about playing bass over chords like that. This video was so great, thank you!
came to make this same comment :)
Same thought as well. :) He's sooo good at that!
ENDORSE
Matt did in his latest video 👍
I 2nd that.
Matt is a great teacher as well as always having a really nice feel for timing. Watch and feel his left hand--it's always great no matter what he's playing. No matter how good of a feel we might think we have, there's always more to learn!

Many thanks for taking your time for us.
Phil from France.
Some fantastic advice, again love the bit at end of video showing how people can listen for the space in a funk jam
This channel is amazing!!! so helpful! and fun to watch as well :D
Matt I watched this two years ago, my time was all over the place! I listened to so much d’angelo and started to slowly get better. This vid saved my ass! Another video on fitting in with band would be gold. Thanks brother
Something clicked in my mind when you talked about "getting the drop..." that is such a cool effect! Thanks
Matt pls keep throwing these tutorials. Loving every one of them!
Much appreciate the pearls , Groovemeister. Thanks for your time.
Best keyboard vids on UA-cam hands down
I found this channel a week or so ago and immediately subscribed!!! What a find.
People are sleeping on your channel, I've really been learning a lot since discovering it.
Jeez - imagine have this level of skill, funk and groove in your veins. Your videos are great, a lot of it is because you're explaining and demonstrating concepts rather than teaching techniques. Thank you

you're a great teacher Matt...good delivery, nice and clear :) thanks dude...
I just came across your channel yesterday, and I just popped in to tell you how grateful I am for these videos (I don't even care that they never seem to be in focus, lol)! Thank you, Matt!
Haha yeah I'm the most amateur 'youtuber 'ever!
Amazing! Your explanations and examples are clear and involving. I'm going to playng my keyboard as funky as I can! 😁
Thank you!
“Can you feel that?”
Damn straight!
I absolutely love Matt’s ability to play 3 plain sounding triads (slightly ho hum) that, left hand added turn into wonderful little pocket grooves with ever-shifting chord structures.
Thanks for your tutorials Matt! You're a great teacher and I'd never thought I would one day see tutorials from you on youtube :)
These tutorials are so well presented! I’m inspired and learning a lot (and I’m a professional performer and music teacher by trade)!
Great to hear!
Man this is exactly the kinda content I wanna see on UA-cam, thanks a lot.
I am just a novice, but it is so nice and inspiring to watch you do your stuff and explaining what you are actually doing. Thanks Matt. And besides the fact you are truly a professional you are such a nice guy :) which also makes it more amusing.
How awesome that you are sharing your magic with us!
Thanks a lot for sharing all this. As a lifelong funk fan and piano beginner, I have found my master of groove. Now, time for practising.
You’re one of the better keyboard players in the world at the moment imho great tutorials keep them coming 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Absolutely inspiring. Jamiroquai's music has inspired my life long love of funk! Born in 87 and remember when my older brother brought Traveling Without Moving into our room when it released in the early 90s. In fact, my brother sent me here to listen and follow, now time to work on my keys!
👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Excellent information. I appreciate you sharing your experience and talent. Enjoying here in California US
I have been studying and practicing these 16th note grooves and you are super helpful
Great stuff Matt. I had a big smile on my face all through! Keep it up.
Matt is a beast!
This is amazing. I no longer need to have to contemplate having to learn complex classical piano pieces on confusing manuscript to crack this instrument. Johnson makes so much sense and introduces hella scope for improvising without the need for sixteen years of ABRSM examinations.
The sacred scriptures of groove. Thank you so much for sharing.
Not only an great musician but also a great teacher. Thanks Matt!
100% Inspiration. Specially the part about fitting in with the band at 11:28
The classiest youtube channel. Content + class = Matt Johnson's channel.
Love it. Thank you for being so generous with your time in those videos. Real gems.
Great video! Pocket is a very tricky concept and it’s great to hear some helpful thoughts/concepts from someone who’s truly mastered it. Thanks a lot!
i'll never play keyboard live but i'm 26 and this video taught me something i hadn't really thought about for my production
Mr Johnson, you are awesome. I don't play the piano but this is just really fun to watch and educational
So fantastic, Matt. Such clear insights on the ideas of groove, funk, drag/bounce, band dynamics. So great man.
Duuuuuuuude! You inspire me big time. I hope I get to meet you in person someday soon and thank you.
"Can you feel that?" Oh mother, I can feel that!
I was feeling that funk like braille lol
