For those who don't know, this is literally one of THE best funk pianists in recent history. Go listen to the Jamiroquai albums since he joined in 2002. Absorb everything you can from this man right here.
Yes! Matt is sooo good at what he does. He also co-produced 100% of the last Jamiroquai album. And his new track "Interstellar love"is quite cool too - ua-cam.com/video/NENaQvRIEs0/v-deo.html
When building-up EDM songs (house, deep, prog, etc) it's always of a huge impact to enhance chords as a tension moment. This guy in 10 minutes just taught everyone new 3 years of music theory. Hahaha. Amazing.
Good video, great content. Only thing I’d say is it’s pretty difficult to see the notes you’re playing due to the color grading you do the keyboard, the black and white, and blue make it hard to follow the chords. May I suggest using an interface with higher contrast, or articulating the chords you play verbally?
funny when Matt was talking about the trick when you switch the minor chord to a major I immediately started singing "with all my heart, I love you baby" and voila!! Love the video!
Thanks for this it was great! usually, music theory is taught in a way more classical and boring way. And this man make it seem so easy, jealous of his piano skills now
Love your channel you really show so much on how to get better I'm new to piano I'm a drummer for over 30 years you explain and show things where it makes sense thank you so much👍
You basically said, like, all the most important things (minus the lyrics) about songwriting in about 10 minutes. These should be in a poster on the wall of my studio.
It’s called the circle of fifths (or circle of fives/Vs) because each chord is the V7/dominant of the next in the sequence. You get through all 12 chords and the. It repeats.
Those first 10 seconds of the video sounded like something the Persona series, especially the 4th, would have as its musicalization profile. If you could sometime, check out Persona 4 and Persona 5 soundtrack for a live pulse on what music a big chunk of the gaming youth sways to Thanks for the practical advice my guy 😅😅
Thank you for putting the on screen keyboard. I'm bad at hearing what key something is in when trying to learn something new. Seeing what keys you're hitting helps immensely 👍
quick note for the editor: for the sneaky 5ths, the 5th is the amin that comes before the gmin, not the 2nd chord, which is just a differently voiced dmin (the root)
Hi lovely lesson as usual just did you know Synthésia ? It's better for to show the keyboard (in free mode you can se all the notes you play on the keyboard and on the falling area try it really good for lessons ;)
9:25 "vocals first, chords second" - for instance, take a "riff" as some arpeggioed chord that forces vocals' very good idea into voice that must "bend" into it. In the end vocal has to adapt and perform in chords to perform. Never break the chain. Get back.
Can someone please explain where at 3:20 he speaks about adding a fifth chord at the end of a sequence. He then plays an F/G in the key of C. But F is the fourth of C, not the fifth.. super confused
I'm a low level keyboardist and more than 25 years in regular playing. Only I can say chords aren't boring... it's everything. It's a love of a sweet sixteen. It's mother's touch. It's father's hug. It's party time. It's partner on lonelyness. It's companion of Almighty. You just have to feel it.

@@elementlab41 I interviewed Matt, this is not available anywhere else
@@SolStateMusic Gotcha! Well, thanks for sharing!
This was awesome!
the biggest producer flex is using a prophet as a midi keyboard
haha - is it still a flex when he has a Jupiter 8 (25K) and Moog 1 (7k)?
@@SolStateMusic 🤣
@@SolStateMusic i think for simple vst folk like myself, yes. yes it is.
haha I know it wasn't a flex but I also noticed that😄

I loved Jamiroquai. This is indeed pure gold . . .love the harmonic breakdown of the music . . .
Everything Matt is playing sound like instant Jamiroquai! You really know where the root for the sound of that band lies (yes and in the bass...)
Matt did co-produce the entire last album! But I've heard Jay from Jamiroquai has some good chord ideas too.
His whole channel is gold. Your whole channel is gold.
You sir are gold.
Matt is an absolute legend.

Bruh I've been watching videos and at random people using FFT music and been taken for a ride 😭😭
@@Buenosaurus-Rex hahaha love it. The music is just unreal.
Yup! He's been playing piano with style longer than most of us have been alive.

Not to mention that he's a physical-mashup of 80's William Sabka and Simon Le Bon.
Great stuff! Matt is so talented, and such a friendly guy - a rare combination in the music world
Thanks, true that!
I'm like that to

Thanx Matt!! Spicing up also occurs by adding 9/11/13, like you do. That’s often my way to make songs more interesting.
