I really like the idea of accenting one patch with the 100% wet reverb from another patch. That's a fantastic effect!

Some really insightful tricks. Love the idea of sending MIDI to another synth and using only the wet track on that 2nd synth. Gives a different color to the reverb than just wet on the dry synth. Never thought of that!

Sidechaining/volume automation etc. is such a great way to sort of embed a rhythm into a sound, what's interesting about the sidechain effect in particular is you get an implied emphasis where there is no sound, it's like an anticipation of that note without actually playing anything there. This has really spiced up my hats in particular, you get such great results routing those into a separate strip where you put 100% wet reverb on and do stuff like EQ/freq shift to get the right timbre, then you automate that volume according to a groove, with a more subtle version of that automation on the dry track, can create really seamless hats + noise, may need to resample though, very rarely in my case.

Fantastic tips, as ever, from a true master! Would love a sequel to this.
Gotta love the old ‘Ghost Kick’ - a beloved technique for ages (whether you use a sidechain, LFOtool, a ‘trance gate’/gapper, volume automation - lots of ways to do a similar thing with their own different characteristics!).
The idea of MIDI-triggering another synth/patch is great - just arming multiple tracks is how I've done that before, but the idea of *transposing* the synth that goes into the reverb tail is really interesting and never occurred to me - it adds a ton of character, and space. I gotta try that out!
(I am also in love with the Valhalla Shimmer, be it with the pitch-shift on +12, -12, -7, +7, or like -0.02 for a little bit of smearing, or even bypassed as just a reverb… it has such a wonderful texture! And I can't believe they make the wild and wonderful Supermassive free.)

Applying the Hard/Soft technique, to a sampled three part harmony vocal, or vocoder, would be a whole new way of adding emphasis/subtlety. It's reminiscent of ocean waves approaching, and receding, but also you get a crash, now and then, or vice versa. Thank You, Matt.

Thanks a lot for these ideas. Some i was familiar with, like the sidechain one or the layered one. The one i will go out & try, is that where you just take the reverb of the 2nd synth to use it with the main. I have been testing out reverb sfx these days and came across the very neat plug in from blue cat audio. Connector lets you create feedbackloops on any channel you choose. Slap one on top of the inserts, then follow it with any reverb/delay/pitchshifter plug, then at the end again a connector to send back to the start of the chain. The main use of that plug in is actually to connect any chosen track to any other daw, be it on your own computer in between daws, via network. It does also midi. Sorry for the long comment, but i thought that this might be a plug you like.
    :)

Love your vlogs, you are a real artist and you almost make me interested in going to see Jamiroquai 😀. What I would love to see is a session on Hammond B3, I'm sure you would come up with something fresh and new. Would be interested to hear whether you think you should really have the organ and Lesley cabinet on stage and in the studio with you or whether the virtual instruments are so good now that you can do it all in software or with a digital Hammond.
