  • In today's video we will be repairing all the dents in the roof panel and rear body panel on the 1953 Chevy Chicken Truck project. I will show how to remove dents on high crown panels, as well as badly damaged low crown panels. Then I will use the Proshaper shrinking disk to help level out the surface.

I think that this was one of your best teaching videos. You showed that it takes analysis to understand what you need to do. Read the panel and move cautiously across the panel bringing the damaged areas up or down a little at a time. I have a rear panel like yours but in much worse condition. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the inspiration.

Just an outside perspective view, sometimes, more often then not, you tend to fail to realize that you're a teacher and a leader in autobody repair and restoration. Yes we understand that you still have a long ways to go to get to where you want to be. Personally, we don't care. As far as we're concerned your like this sheet metal wizard that makes literal magic happen before our eyes as you bang on garbage with various hammers.

Kyle you have taken what we taught you to a whole new level. It is so nice to hear you are employing the “order of repair of a dent” then taking that to “in relation to quality and speed is all dependent on the rough out”! Your expanded roughout methods are now being taught to new students. Great work! Keep it up!

Thanks, Kyle, for sharing your hard won knowledge. This video is the best explanation of how to go about ironing out a lot of damage, in a methodical way, that I've found here on UA-cam. It's also the first I've found that actually describes an order of operations, instead of just "let's bang out this dent." (UPDATE: Kyle talks about the order of operations at the very top of "How I Fix Dents:The Cheap, Easy Way." two years ago. I watched this at least twice...my parents always said "...you just don't listen..." Sorry, Kyle.)
Those kinds of videos are helpful, too, but most of us with garbage cars are dealing with much more than just one dent. I learned a ton...what a nice holiday gift! Thanks, man! All the best to you in the new year.

Watching you drill out all those spot welds kinda vindicates me drilling out hundreds of spot welds on my ‘58 Pontiac in an effort to gain access to get rust out from factory seams, and of course to knock dents out. Still got to weld the hood back together, been chasing a high spot in the front of the hood for a long time, and am getting tempted to cut it out and patch it. Very frustrating endeavour, and have many more spots to drill as i work my way to the rear quarters and trunk.

I'll have to say I NEEDED that video!!! I consider that to be an important tool I will refer to in the future. I noticed that you seem (a little) to be left-handed, but you are actually able to work with both hands. I know there's a word for that, but I just don't like it. I know there's a word you don't like, too - it's "can't". And you certainly can. Anyways, you should be proud to work that way. I've been practicing for many years, and can usually work with either hand, but not as good when striking with a hammer or using a baseball bat. I can't wait to get started on my project car, but I'm building a workshop now, and my parents require my help very often. You certainly deserve to be proud of your results!
