Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. The one thing I appreciate most about this movie is how genuine Daniel’s expressions and reactions are. He acts and does things like most of us would do, not the typical movie stereotypes and cliches.

This is phenomenal acting. She's playing a character both young and old, smiling and crying, and someone it fits together absolutely SEEMLESSLY. This scene should be taught in acting schools.

Agreed. This scene works so well because there is no way in a million years you would have figured out what is really going on by this point on first viewing. It is so creepy and intriguing because it is so specifically written and unique. Peele also allocates a noticably long amount of time for the actress to fully play out the inner conflict. With full context on second viewing, its like watching a completely different scene. Amazing acting

What's amazing about this movie is that it portrays what 90% of the population is doing today. Most of people live in a form of dark void, suffering from the burden of their past without any control over their present, lost in depression and letting social media and other people's opinions dictate our lives and bodies. So in a way, we are all passengers as long as we don't have the confidence to take control of our destiny. We are a bunch of Gina and Andre without even noticing it. Whenever you let other people's opinions destroy you or prevent you from being yourself, remind yourself that it's exactly the same as letting a stranger control your mind and body.
This woman deserves an Oscar for playing a white woman trapping a black woman in her own body. She executed this so well. She was frightening.

There were so many “Aight imma head out” moments.
On the other hand actually it's good that he stayed and killed this family so they can't hurt anyone anymore. Even if he could escape from them in beginning they would keep looking for new "targets". He just ruined their family business to ashes.

This scene is GENIUS
1. Using the word "tattletale" instead of casual words like "snitch" and "rat you out"
2. "I don't answer to anyone" -- she's the Grandma, and the Senior Lady of the house, of course, she doesn't.
3. At 1:23 EXACTLY she makes an expression that leads me to believe the original gained control and wants to warn Chris of the truth, before her expression shifts. Her lips are in an exaggerated grin while you can see that her eyes are crying out for help.
4. The No's had multiple meanings -- The real owner saying NO to losing control, the grandma saying NO to the original wanting her body back, saying NO, they weren't uncomfortable...so many layers! The "Aren't you something" can be the grandma saying it to Chris, or saying it to the real owner.
5. "They treat us like family" -- They ARE family, they are the grandparents inside new bodies.
6. The slow turn, before the brisk pace away.

If you read to closely and over think things, the no’s can have multiple meanings. They CAN. But they don’t. Script-wise the no is Grandma telling the true body to suppress itself. Nothing more.

There are so many creepy layers to this scene, but for me, THE MOST HORRIFIC part is that the Black woman's consciousness is TOTALLY AWARE of all the shit that Grandmother is doing with her body and the tears are simply an autonomic response to her very real pain as she is essentially buried alive inside her own body. That is worse than death!

Oh goodness I’m getting claustrophobic just thinking about that.
The fact that she was genuinely able to portray 2 different people at the same time and effectively convey both of their emotions is world class.
Not only does Betty Gabriel deliver one of the greatest pieces of acting ever captured on film, but she manages to give us the briefest glimpse of the real Georgina. Unlike Andre and Walter, we never see her full true personality because Chris never uses the flash on her. Yet this is the detail that speaks volumes about her character in this moment. It’s not a flash that triggers her real self to start to come out, but Chris’ words. Being his decent self, Chris tries to connect with her and say something she would likely relate to. And when he says it, she relates to it SO MUCH because of what’s happened that it’s the words alone that make her gather the strength to break through for just a moment, enough to take a breath and start crying, struggling with all her might to warn this man who is a total stranger to her (not unlike Andre). Sadly the grandma is able to immediately take over again, but for a millisecond, Georgina does what none of the other Sunken Place prisoners could do. The fact that she doesn’t even need a flash to retake control for the briefest moment shows that this woman was a FIGHTER. RIP Georgina. You deserved better.

One of the most frighteningly well acted scenes I've ever seen.
Being able to laugh like that while shedding tears showcasing the internal struggle between the person who once was and the dominant in control now is insane. Just knowing that somewhere in there the original person IS still there trying to GET OUT is haunting. It's incredible

That scene is legendary. You really could see the real Georgina trying to fight through, only to be surpressed. Awesome performance by her & the whole cast.

This was a powerful scene. The crying to laughter shows how conflicted she was was and the fact that she was conscious of what was happening. She just couldn't control it.

If you just look at her eyes, you can see Georgina crying inside for help, if you look below her eyes you can watch the creepy old lady trying to hold her down, distracting Chris with her laugh. That "yes" which sounded like a gasp was something that came out all of a sudden from Georgina who is inside, and you can clearly see the face changing to Grandma and her surprise that Georgina almost got out. And as a result a single tear came out of her eyes, which means Georgina started talking and started to cry, but Grandma somehow came back, from there Grandma took control with the "no, no, no"

This movie is so freakin' brilliant. When you peel back the many layers you see how genius level this movie is. One of the best movies ever made in my opinion.

Peele confirmed that Rose left the door open because she she wanted Chris to see how cunning she is, but I like the idea that it was Georgina -- maybe she was able to take back control of her body while grandma's brain was sleeping and open the door...

That's what the above people are talking about. They say that maybe the real Georgina temporarily somehow gained control over the grandma.

She was my favorite character in this movie. She KILLED it. She’s INCREDIBLY creepy, but you can see the prisoner inside her through her eyes, wanting so badly to cry out for help, or warn him, but can only cry, for just a moment-than her “pilot” forces the sobs to sound like laughter. This actress was amazing.
I also think Georgina left that closet door open for Chris to find them pictures. Like you know little things can have them get some control of their body. So I think she left it open. And the grandma didn't pick up on it

It happens just as the camera cuts back to her, before the shorter first gasp. It looks like the Grandma regains control of the body on the second, longer gasp at 1:23, after the original mind snaps out of the trance around 1:14.
Just watched the movie for the first time tonight, and immediately skipped back several times to check if she'd mouthed "Run", and it seemed clearer each time. Searched around, but I haven't seen anyone mention it online.

Georgina was the creepiest character in the movie. Her comments, gestures and the fast paced walking is worthy of acknowledgement or an oscar. She was definitely underrated and overlooked.
Probably it's due to the minor roles she played y she didn't get much recognition. But honestly speaking she is really really good!

This is an amazing scene. I keep replaying it because it's so well acted and conceived.
The first time I saw this scene I was disturbed to my core. Such a fantastic example of pure psychological horror. A brilliant scene. I saw 'Us' recently, while I did enjoy that film. I feel that this film is stronger as a whole.
I didn't see US but no one seems to be talking about it like they talked about this movie.
Without comparing it to anything else, "Us" is a fine movie to me. But if I compare it to "Get Out", made by the same director, I'd even dare to say it's a bad movie. "Get Out" became one of my all-time favorite movies, which I can watch over and over without getting bored. "Us" is definitely "meh" in comparison.

Unbelievably exceptional acting!!! That was some of the best moments in cinema EVER.
The whole scene and acting is brilliant...the way he talks to her the whole time with a tilted head (showing discomfort and distrust) and how she not just uses the vocabulary of an elderly woman but her voice also sounds like one, and the way she shows the emotions of two different people at the same time.....brilliant!!!!
I hope Betty Gabriel gets more recognition and hopefully some awards buzz cause she frigging stole the show for sure.

She was genuinely my favorite part of this already amazing film. SUCH amazing acting in such a short scene.
I think Georgina completely took over for about 5 seconds, 1:17 to 1:23, which was enough to make the body cry even after the grandmother takes back control. At 1:23 she was about to say something but the grandma regained control, and she freaked out then, started to laugh and continuously say "no" because losing control was scary. She was afraid and relived at the same time. The creepy laughing and reassuring are all the grandmother, the tears are Georgina's.

That “Hello” at the beginning, almost scared me to death 💀💀💀💀 There were almost a couple nights where I was afraid to sleep. Imagine someone like that says “Hello” in a spooky tone, after waking up.
Betty Gabriel man. Her acting is terrifying in this scene. I had chills down my back watching this whole scene.
I think this is like watching a masterclass in acting. She is doing so many things here at the same time and all in less than three minutes and it's flawless. Great movie.

lulu I don't think so. I think what he said triggered a fear in Georgina - she might have thought the same thing - that white people scare her. For example when she was invited to the Armitage's. As she was triggered, some part of her woke up and she was able to frown. She was wrestling inside to gain full consciousness but the grandma took over and crying was the only reaction left.
Gabriel is astonishing in this scene. The subtle shift in her expression where it appears that her calm demeanor will crack is an example of masterful acting. She has little screen time in Get Out, but personally I believe she deserves recognition by many critics for her excellence. Well done!

It’s more like grandma Armitage was purposely unplugging it so it can die faster and Chris can’t call for help. But that’s just my opinion.
What creeps me out is the way the floor creeks as she keeps inching forward. At first I thought she was coming on to him, towards the end of this scene it became clear her intentions were much more sinister in nature.

This has got to be the best horror film I’ve ever watched. The attention to detail and acting and everything else is insane to me. Everyone who worked on this are masters at their craft

Something I realized a little later some of u might not have: After the moment Georgina has earlier in the film when the family's drinking iced tea, later that night Chris notices the closet door opened before he goes outside for a smoke. After this exchange between Chris and she, later in the evening the closet door is left opened again. The young woman was leaving the door opened for Chris to find the pictures.

Tia T Real Georgina was fighting to try and tell Chris to get out, that's why when he says he gets uncomfortable when he's the only black person around she starts tearing up. It's not the grandmother, it's real Georgina. Leaving the door open works because it doesn't come off to the grandmother as an obvious attempt to get Chris' attention. Remember the conversation with the brother about fighting earlier in the film. The Armitage's tend to underestimate that the blacks could ever outwit them and just view them as physically superior.

The subtle “snitch” and “rat you out” phrases wouldn’t have been understood by a woman that was originally born in a different era. The fact that the writing played to her saying “tattle tale” which would have been more encompassing in her time period goes to show how much detail peele writes with. Every dialogue exchange is an opportunity.
