  • Follow me as I do a tune-up procedure on the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta with a 2.0 engine. Volkswagen currently has 5 codes stored in the computer. Codes list as P0300, P0301, p0302, p0303, and P0304. Normally you would not replace the ignition coil as part of a tune-up procedure but in this case we are or the reason of lack of maintenance on this vehicle.

    I have a 2011 VW Jetta 2.0. The EPC and CEL came on while driving home from work. The EPC came on first then a flashing CEL until it just stayed solid. The car lost power, there was no acceleration when pressing the pedal, it vibrated very bad and had a rough idle at the lights when I got off the freeway. My uncle works at Midas and when he came to check it he instantly pointed out a faulty Cat. I took it to a muffler shop and got these codes P0420, P0300, P0301, P0304, P0351 and two other codes I can't remember. I changed the Cat and the guys at the shop showed me how clogged it was, they were surprised it even ran. That same day I changed out the coolant, plugs and wires. This was 03/30. Car was good up until two days ago, 04/14. Same thing, EPC, CEL, loss of power, no throttle, etc. I went back to the muffler shop to get the Cat checked and they said all was good but I did have the above codes excluding the P0420. I went to another shop and the man said he'd run a thorough diagnostics for $120. I agreed to take the car the next morning, today. I changed the ECTS when I got home, removed, reinstalled plugs/wires and called my uncle again. When he checked it he went straight to the harness that connects to the ignition coil. When he moved it the engine would idle roughly, when he'd move the harness again the engine would run normally. He said it could be a short somewhere in that harness. Well I just dropped off the car at the shop. I told the owner about a possible short in the electrical system and that moving some wires around would agitate the engine. I turned it on, popped the hood and he went straight to the harness that connects to the IC. He said he thinks it might be the IC going bad and that he'd start there before removing the cover/jacket from the harness. I bussed it home and checked YT for a DIY for replacing the IC. Depending on the diagnostics if its not a short I'll be changing the IC myself using your video as a guide. I have already changed the Cat, coolant, ECTS, plugs and wires in this vehicle. I do hope the fault isn't expensive and if it is the IC, I want to say thanks man. You've saved me several hundred bucks. I've spent a lot already.

      Are the codes still there after your repairs?? I agree with you, always check the gap. When you purchase most spark plugs these days they say pre gapped and no need to check but what happens during shipping or packaging? You never know!! I always check if I can. On the transmission, I did not touch that at all on this vehicle. With the transmission fluid, I always recommend going to the manufacturer to get transmission fluid. Especially on import vehicles port vehicles. On my hondas and Toyota's we use nothing but OE fluid only.

    Hi Scott, Just found this video. I have a 2015 Jetta 2.0L regular, and I was curious if anything has changed since the 2013. I was told I may have to hook the car up to a computer or I could have an issue. My quote from the mechanic says that I need a new Coil pack, spark plug wires and spark plugs. Is this something I could do myself without a computer?
    Thanks in advance!

    I'm sorry if I sound dumb asking this, but what is the name of the tool you used to pull the plugs out of the coil pack? I want to say its forceps? I want to really try to replace my coil pack myself and save some money. (Lord knows I'm no mechanic, but you make it look simple) Thanks for the video! Great job!

    • @ScottiesHobbies
      @ScottiesHobbies  5 років тому

      Forceps.. I love it. Those are actually spark plu pliers, you can get them here: amzn.to/2Ry9C5E or ebay.to/2N3Lvgs If you get the style like I am using, make sure to grab the spark plug wire were the metal clip in the wire connects to the spark plug. roughly a inch up from bottom of wire. IF you grab the bottom you can slide the grommet up the wire if its stuck on the spark plug good. always try to pull in the direction the spark plug is facing, especially if you are thinking of keeping the wires. It is a easy job with the right tools. It can get time consuming. I'd say with my experience this can be a 45 miniute job. It should take a novice no more than a couple hours with small breaks.
      Good luck on your diy maintenance.

      Before replacing the ignition system which included spark plugs, wires, and coil this car did have a misfire. After replacing all the parts with OEM parts the problem went away and has been away since those repairs were done. I have heard horror stories of people using less expensive parts and having the same problem persist after the repairs were done too. Did you use OEM quality?

    Hi Scott, how did you decide to change coil, plugs, and cables? Did you just continue using process of elimination until the error went away? I currently have a P302 and am hoping a plug will do it. If not I will probably continue as you did as it will still be cheaper than a garage.

    • @ScottiesHobbies

      If I was chasing that code and trying to isolate the problem I would do this: swap the number 2 coil with another coil from another calendar. If the miss fire moves calendars then you know the coil is bad. If the issue continues on the original calendar, you can check the wires. See of the ohms are the same on all wires, your looking for a abnormality. If the wires are good, you better hope its the spark plug. If its not the plugs at this point, I'd do a compression check to see if the calendar has bad compression.
      Hopefully that will help you out. If you want you can give me a call around 5 pm pacific time Monday thru Friday and I can explain it to you and answer questions. I'll post the convo on a podcast to help others. Scott @ 925 418-5096

      You could use hands. But you take a greater risk of damaging them. Inside the wire boot is the actual connector to the spark plug. With the spark plug pliers you can grip the boot where the connection is to hopefully get a better grip on the connection rather than just pulling on the boot.
