Excellent! A really useful video, thanks. I wish I was just starting out, not coming to the end. I hated asking for permissions, yet ventured out fairly locally, I have been pleasantly surprised at my unexpected success. Certainly more land than I could ever fully cover, even if not rich pickings. Being as pleasant, polite and professional as possible, I think personal contact, giving a good account of yourself, is paramount.
Following the NCMD Code, I always operate as if I am being observed - and often am. Last year, a shout came from a cottage garden behind me. "That's good to see!", "What's That?" I turned to ask. "The time and trouble you have gone to in filling that hole and leaving it neat!". Followed by some tips about a nearby path that could be useful. A great hobby indeed.

Lots of good information for people coming into the hobby Graeme. I retired recently but prior to that I worked in the hospitality trade. Five of my permissions came from me chatting to the customers, finding out a little bit about them, if I discovered they were farmers or landowners then I would ask them for permission, working in a little country pub had its advantages lol. As you say, be smart, be polite and respectful. Jax.

Great video Graeme the other thing I told the farmer that got me in his good books I told him that if he ever or any of his family/friend lost any thing I would come and try and find it using my detector. A farmer lost a piece of machinery I found if for him saved him £200 and I get more fields to detect on a win win for both me and the farmer. also dropping into the conversation that you have public liability insurance is a good shout as well. plus the amount of sheep i have freed from brambles/briers and in fences it all helps to build trust

well, thank's for that, really interesting video, the only downside as far as i'm concerned is obtaining permissions, i live in a village around bronte country and there is a lot of moorland and small farms, ( mostly pasture ) some of which are renting land from other untracable land owners, it seems the farmers around here especially the ones with horses on them don't want me on their land digging holes that they think the horses are going to injure themselves falling into one, i did get permission at two adjoining farms this year, one with two fields, one of which used to be the village recreation ground back in the 1800's but there is a lot of old mining waste been tipped on it over the years and all i have found so far is old iron bits and a few modern'ish coins dropped by dog walkers, the other field all ive found is old bits of farm equipment dropped off machinery, the other 4 fields belonging to the, "let's play with horses people", not farmers as such, gave me permission and before i had chance to get on the land they have decided it's a bad idea, so taken the permission back. !! the nice people on the first farm are selling up after they tried to make a go of it but failed and are moving back down south so i'll probably loose that land as well, being in my 70's it's getting more difficult to get around so i may just give up. oddly enough i was looking to buy a 440 from your site yesterday but now i'm not sure it's worth it.?.
