being a farmer myself some tips are tell them you will remove all trash and things that will puncture there tires such as nails.also offer your services to locate lost things like tools and such farmers are always loosing things. and once you get a farmers permission ask for other farmers in the area that might let you hunt

Hi Kris I got my first permission today! Tips worked well especially the history and offering help. In addition, he also liked the maps printed off Google Earth so he could pen in his field boundaries. I originally asked to do a 60 acre field but he said I can do all his land which is about 700 acres of mixed pasture and ploughed land. Told the wife she wont see much of me from now on. Lol ;)

+Addictedtobleeps 1st visit found a pair of regimental collar badges for the Ox & Bucks light infantry circa 1918. Funny enough got call today from the farmer telling me that he's just ploughed a 17 acre field if I wanted to run the detector over it...Okay let me think about for one second??? YES. Blimey looks like I struck gold with this farmer :)

Using old maps, streams, lakes and rivers are usually the same location even hundreds of years later. Lots of early parade grounds have lots of relics. Old Fair sites and Horse racing tracks have lots of coins. Old pub sites etc. Don't ask to detect the whole area, ask permission for just a corner or certain area. Down by the creek etc. Once you gain his confidence, then ask for more permission.
Hi Bleeps , ive just started detecting and havent been able to go as no permission , i took a few tips from your vid , this week i wrote a short note to a farm i found on google maps ,
i enclosed a sae and put my telephone number on it , and guess what the phone rings on wednesday night its the farmers wife , she said by all means come she was really nice , so im going there this morning :) 400 acres . so a big thank you for your tips , with out those i wouldnt of done it .

Excellent vid, every permission I have got has been through a face to face meeting. Always been polite and always had a smile on my voice, everything I've found , I've always endeavoured to try to show the farmer.As of yet, they don't seem interested in their choice of rusty nails,cans bottle tops,ect. Without asking you will never get.
Very good suggestions! These are basically the same things that I follow in the USA. Having lived in Northern Virginia we had easy access to many US Civil War locations. I now live in Wilmington, NC with lots of US Revolutionary and US Civil War locations nearby. Farms have always been the best locations for finding relics and coins. One item that I also offer is to remove all trash that I find which will reduce the number of flat tires or equipment damages. I also show the property owners the buckets of junk that I find and explain that I properly recycle all metals, glass, plastics, etc. I explain that I not only am interested in History but also the environment. I also carry a 'Release of Liability' for those property owners that are worried about me getting injured. One additional item that I ask once permission is granted is make sure you ask the property owner if there is any area of the land that they want avoided, pet cemeteries, near fruit trees, flower beds, etc. It is very important to show the land owner that you care for their property as much as they do. I also offer my labor in exchange for searching time, this works best with older land owners as they don't always have the funds to pay for labor. I remove large rocks from fields, fill run off gullies, repair gravel roads, remove downed tree limbs and trees, this is an area that you have to know your own limitations. As a rule of thumb I do not offer to do anything that is beyond my own ability. Good luck to all! ;-)

The quickest permission I ever heard of was from a work mate recently bought his young lad a detector and has a caravan at the east coast that is next to a farmers field. he was using it around their caravan when the farmer who was in his field came over and they got talking. Within a few minutes the farmer granted his lad permission without his dad even asking.... turning to my mates lad, he said. "Any treasure you find we share it halfsies ok!" while rubbing his hands together and winking at my mate. His lad is only 10 and wasn't sure what he meant. Good eh!!

I may have seen this only recently but by far the best advice for new detectorist. Though I have been detecting on and off since the late '70's there always is good to be learned in our hobby. Thank you for fantastic video.
Many thanks for the supporting info that you supply. Today I`ve gone and purchased my first ever detector, a Vanquish 540, from a local dealer in Dorset. I`ve signed up to the NMCD, and I know a friendly Farmer, who will hopefully allow me to step foot onto his land. It`s good to hear someone start their video with something other than `Hey Dude! This is an excellent info-video for novice metal detectorists and anyone interested in the valuable history of our planet. Well spoken.
I went for a drive to my local farms had three perms in one day , magic, has I know the Romans came through one, there was a battle on another and a sword and helmet found on the other , will try and get the next three farms then have over a thousand acres to myself.
Once you get permission from someone in an area, even for their garden, you've got a local reference they can ask if you're legit, don't leave holes etc. it opens doors and many farming communities are close knit so when one says you're OK shown him what you've found and so on it opens many doors.
I am thinking of taking up metal detecting , i have been looking at video's on utube , and i would like to say how good your video is . It is well presented , full of information , and good do's and donts. Thank you Jed
What an excellent video, full of tips which I will put to good use as up to now I have found it difficult to decide just how to find and where to go to meet farmers on a casual and friendly basis. I am sure both myself and the small club I belong to will benefit so much with the possitive attitude shown in this instructional piece. Should have found it years ago.
The thing which best worked for me was finding and returning a landowners gold ring. Now people in that community know there is an honest detectorist who has good relationship with landowners.
Quite often when I'm out other landowners will stop to have a bit crack (not crack cocaine - lol) and suggest I give their fields a go which is unheard of from some people's experiences. Other people asking in the area have been greeted with a straight 'no'.
I just need more damn time to get out now...

It can really get you down. I've been there. It really is just a case of sticking with it though, and not giving up. I couldn't believe it when my first farmer said yes. It was so easy, after so many setbacks.
A club, really, really helps. I've now got members of my club permissions.
Hi, Just to say I found the advice on gaining permissions really useful . I have been writing letters and used much off the advice you have given. Have got a few permissions so far but have not followed up my letters with a visit or phone call. Will try this.

Day 1: It worked! I got permission from a farmer, now let's keep the relationship going, and help him out.
Day 193: After sending him a christmas card and some wine, he gave me a lovely note with some phone numbers from farmers, and he said he put in a good word for me!
Day 203: Now I have 4 permissions, the other farmers were very friendly.
Day 557: The farmers loved the wine, I think every farmer loves me now!
Day 2096: Help. I have bought so much wine for these farmers I am currently in so much debt, I'm spending more on wine alone than I am making per year. The shopkeepers think I'm a struggling alcoholic and have called the police on many an occasion. Help.
In all seriousness thank you so much for this video, I honestly didn't know it would be this time consuming, so unfortunately I will probably have to wait until I am back from uni next summer. Excited though!

Cool video. Can i just add another tip that helped me gain permission.When arranging a meet with a farm it can be helpful and useful to take a printed picture of the surrounding fields so that if you get to the stage in conversation you can whip out the printed map and the farmer can point out the boundaries. It helps to start off on the right foot. As you mentioned farmers are busy people so anything that's convenient to them goes in your favour. I enjoy your videos and have now subscribed cheers.

Great video for a relative newcomer like myself - well done and many thanks! In fact, using your tips and those of 'Man With The Hat', I sent out six letters last week (including SAEs with them too, which I think shows some commitment to the recipient). Just a week later I received a phone call from one of them saying that he would be delighted for me to come and detect on his land and was I aware of all the roman activity nearby! Yes I was, as I'd done my research as you'd suggested (didn't tell him that though) and that was one of the reasons why I approached them - that and the fact that we buy stuff regularly from their Farm Shop! I'm so excited to be able to go somewhere other than the beach now, I'm like a kid again and that's down in no small part to you. Thanks Kris.

Again kris fantastic advice .I have not asked one farmer yet ,and yes its not going to happen with my butt glued to sofa. One thing i have worked out and would like to add is experience increases your chances and we hopefully will get better at asking as time goes on . A bit like sex ,i know now i was no god in the sack at 17,but believed i was .
Same applies to many of us ,we think we can get anything we want if we want it badly enough, but fact is on something as important as gaining a permission many of us might stammer or say something totally stupid when nervous,putting out bad vibes farmers can pick up on.Thats why i am plannning to draw a circle 5 miles radius ,assess whats interesting on outer perimeter and start asking there first.if i keep getting knocked back hopefully as i get closer to home i will have corrected anything i have been doing wrong and fine tuned my approach as good as it can get .Then hopefully when i ask the nearest farm i will have some air about me that the farmer recognises and trusts .I too had thought of taking my little six year old,and am even thinking of trying to get a club started that encourages youngsters to get involved ,getting them off thier computers/phones.

Great vid, going to try & get some land this Autumn around Dorset ,i do a lot of detecting on south coast beaches in warmer weather but got me self a barber jacket & a flap cap & wellies boots to look the part ,hopefully i just might get a bit of land by offering my charm & services as a roofer & handyman as a free of charge jest jar . great vid matey.one thing i have found usefull is, I go to our local farm shop every sunday for for my veg and i have built up quite a repor with the guy.he has no told me i can go on his land when ever i want.as long as he hasnt got ant crops on the go.of course...

I have been thinking a lot of times how to ask for permision. The thing is, I am a foreigner, I am not British native speaker, I am from EU, I speak English but I have sometimes dificulties to understand everything.. By the way your English in the video is absolutely fantastic, even though you are speaking very fast I understood 95% :)
So I would be in disadvantage in asking in person or by phone for a permision, because I think if farmers see I am not British they probably would consider me ( I don't mean this offensively!) to be a “suspicious” person :D
If I am a member of a Metal Detecting Club it would be so much easier to get on a field, farm etc.
I very would like to join any MDC but again.. I think my English language and the fact I am not British could be a problem or barrier for my accepting to the MD Club..
Which makes me sad.. Because it must be so awesome to enjoy doing this hobby on a huge field with a lot of mates who have the same passion when everybody is trying to find something nice.
Marco Polo Hello! :) I don't think the fact that you don't speak English well will stop people from accepting you into a club. Find a club, and speak to the chairman, explaining why you are so nervous about it. I'm sure they'll understand :)Try letters if you feel un-easy talking to people. Letters or e-mails :)
I think the best way to get permission is to ask in person and explain your love of History. Just BE HONEST with the property owner. I explain that I remove all the trash that I find be it a bottle on the surface or a nail a foot down in the ground! It all comes out and goes home with me for recycling. Here in the US there are scrap metal dealers that will buy your metals and although you don't get a lot for steel or iron just cleaning the environment is good to do! I carry a 3 gallon bucket when I dig and at the end of the day I show the land owner all that I have found.. I also offer to give them anything that I have found if they so desire. I also offer to remove any metals that they want removed if I can. I offer my services to find lost rings, tools, equipment parts, property stakes, waterlines, or anything else that they need assistance with. I make no guarantees that I can locate anything but will give it my best try. I wish you all the best of luck and hope to see some of your finds on here sometime soon. It also helps to join a treasure hunting club as you will find that others have the same issues and need assistance as well. Not all clubs are the same just as all Treasure Hunters (TH'ers) are not the same. Sometimes you just need to join and get a feel of the members and see if one will give you some pointers and help you out. Good luck to you. ;-)

That Call to the Farmer was as funny as my SatNav Bossy B* telling me en-route to my brother's house to "Take the 3rd Exit at the roundabout, and go back" : ) A SatNav is a good idea; There's nothing worse than not being on time when booked to meet a busy Farmer!

Very useful information for beginners. If farmer says no you can ask him if you can leave your card with him offering a free finding service to him or any of his fellow farmers should they lose a valuable item around the farm etc, then just to give you a call you never know.

I think your right about much of what you say and do make sure you say how hoards keep being found in your area! or maybe just apply for farm jobs or get into a line of work that gets you out into the countryside if thats your thing.

You could buy some produce from those farms and get to know the owner. That might get you in the door. Face to face is the best way to contact anyone for permission. Even putting a metal detecting club logo on your jacket or hat helps to identify you to the Farmer. Offer to hunt for lost rings or other jewelry. Offer a percentage of your finds to him. Bring your kids helps too.

Very good video, man.
Your last point was a very good one - getting the farmers to tell other landowners what a great person you are. That goes a hell of a long way.
I find that if you show the farmer what you found and where you found it first / second time out, it allows them to make a mental map of what was happening on their land in the past and they like that. Giving them the odd georgian copper, musket ball, spindle whorl always is good too as they will feel a bit more connected.

hey there, i have a quick question, i am new to this and i am really excited about getting my 1st metal detector, however i have come to a dilemma, which detector to get, shall i get a garrett 150 ace as it is affordable and simple to use or should i get the next model up (250 garrett which is more costly and complicated to use as a first metal detector) suggestions please???

Excellent video, great advice and well produced. One thing I noticed that was missing, or perhaps I missed it. You have three farms in an area. You spot a feature on a map, how do you know who owns that particular field and which farm to contact? Or do you contact the farms first, see what permission you get, then show them a print out of google earth and ask which are their fields? I guess you could do it either way round. As a graphic designer myself, I also found your “Pinned” comment really useful. I am in France, not speaking too much French, so that leaflet idea is excellent for me. One final thing, if going with a more formal approach of using a contract, would you be saying that you have exclusive use? HH, Ellis.

For example, if the farmer or the owner of the land asks you "what are you going to do, if you find something valuble". What would you say? I am assuming that he would also be very interesting in it and since you find it on the land that belongs to him..
Very good video and lots of good suggestions. I must agree with Swampratman2000 below, inform the farmer that you will remove all items that you find and will show him at the end of the day your bucket of finds. I carry a 3 gallon bucket with me and have several more in my vehicle and at the end of the day I take the time to show the farmer all the bits and bobs that I have removed from their property. One of the questions that I will ask a farmer is how many flat tires do they get in an average year? The usual response is 'way too many!' My comeback to this is 'I can reduce your flat tires and equipment breakdowns caused by items in the ground as I will remove any and all that I am able to!' I go on to explain that I have found some very deep and large items of metal (buried car axle, engine, or unknown pipe) that I was not able to remove due to size. I offer to inform the farmer of such items and go on to offer my assistance in removing these items from their property. I also inform the farmer that I recycle all the scrap metal that I dig up and use the funds to pay for gas, batteries, repairs to my detectors, etc. I also offer to show the farmer how to use a metal detector as I also carry a spare detector with me on most of my Searches. Now I will say that most farmers do not have the time to take me up on my offer but sometimes they do have a child or grandchild visiting that would like to give it a try. I jump at this as it is a way to show the farmer that I am not one to just take but one that will also give. You are also correct when you suggest swapping a day of labor for a day of digging; this works. One thing that I have noticed is many detectorist are LAZY, they refuse to pick up trash when they are out searching. If you are given permission to search any property, clean it up! If you find a bottle on the surface, pick it up and carry it home with you. I do the same when I search a local beach. All the metal finds go home with me along with bottles, plastic, etc. People notice that you are caring for the property as well as the owners, and anyone that happens to walk through the area. As Jeff Lewis has stated finding the time to go digging is sometimes the hardest to do when you are working 5 or 6 days a week, have a family to deal with, home projects, and life in general. I try to get out at least once a week, depending on the weather which is sometimes a pain. This is a great hobby and a super way to relax and enjoy life. It is even better if you can share it with a child or friend! ;-)

A great vid and very help full. It seems in the uk beaches are the only place to detect with out a permisson and not every one lives near one. The us vids had given me the impression you could go in parks and detect but no. i live in the south and im getting a lot off Nos maybe i should join a club try your ideas or just play x box and sell my detector
Thanks for the help Ive tried since Christmas with no luck. I feel like I should just stick to beach's but It is horrible when you drive past a field and say to your work mates. Thats a crackin field. and they look at you strange.

Great informative vid,i agree everything you said, except i have never emailed, phoned or wrote a letter.I just think this gives them a little time to think about it, and have something rehearsed for when you get back to them.My approach is do your research exactly as you said.Then just call, not at their busy time like milking, etc.I have got all bar one farms i called at,and have around twelve, plus odd fields on others.I am 50,so maybe that helps,who knows..thanks for sharing GL&HH
