Great video as always 👍🏻. Myself and a friend of mine who I detect with have a few permissions. A couple came from knowing the land owner previously. One from a 'friend of a friend' putting in a good word. And some of our best came from sending an email to the land owner. I searched for local farms and farm shops on google to see if any had a website, and from those, I looked for the 'contact us' section and sent an email. The best and most fruitful permission we have (400 acres) was gained from an email. We have been on there for over a year now and have had all sorts of lovely finds. I have also done the face to face approach but never had any luck with it unfortunately. I suppose it's horses for course on both sides.....the person seeking permission needs an approach that the land owner will be conducive too. My advice for those still seeking their first permission, would be to keep trying and those two things will eventually marry up 👍🏻
Exceptional advice SD thank you - I will pin this and hopefully others will read it 😁 Hope all well!
@@HolzHammerSagas Thank you. Hope you're well 👍🏻
One good way to get permission:
Go talk to the farmer when he is on the field, ask him if he has lost some tractor parts, tell him you can help and you helped other farmers, mention names of nearby farmers you got permission, and for sure it is the best if you live in the same area to get confidence growing
That's a very good tip Hervé, I will definitely try it if I get the opportunity! Hope all well with you
Alexander. I've learnt through my working life that it is never a bad thing to go back to basics. Everyday is a school day and even the veterans of us will either learn something or will be nodding their head in recognition of things you mention, particularly trying to get permission. Still loving your vids and am eager to visit the South East at some time to experience the difference between the Midlands. Keep up the good work 😊
Thank you Alan that was good to read! Hope all well with you and All the Best, Alexander
Thank you! Very well done. As a rather new metal detectorist in the Western United States, I truly envy the age of the relics that you are able to hunt for. I live vicariously through your finds. After digging for over a year, I have found nothing but trash and modern coins. It tries my patience with the hobby, but videos like yours give me motivation to carry on. Keep up the good work and good humor.
That's really tough TR - all I can say is please keep on trying and I'm sure you'll find something really good soon… It will happen when you least expect it mark my words when you're about to give up and smash your metal detector against the ground, that's when it will happen! Keep yer pecker up, as we say around here! All the best, Alexander
I saw a UA-cam video a year or so ago about metal detecting the trails that waggon trains took heading West, and how you can, in places, still see the giant cartwheel ruts and the line of the old trail. Some of those giant wheels were taller than a man, sometimes drawn by cattle, and bits of wheel hardware and waggon ironmongery would fall to the ground. I know it might not be remarkable to you but people find all sorts from that era, especially bullets, cutlery from the camp kitchens, hose shoes and other metal goods. From my perspective here in southern England it sounds like a fabulously exciting experience. I'm sure the occasional coin surfaces, as well as the odd gun and sheath knife. I have no idea how you'd find the original trails, though there must be extensive records, but as that was such a massively pivotal time not just for America but for the whole world, the sense of history in any finds has to be wonderfully exciting.
This shared wisdom should be invaluable to the budding detectorist Alex. Many newcomers buy a machine and struggle to find anywhere to use it and are surprised at the amount of things they need to understand beforehand. I sense a few more videos on this subject. 😃👍
They are fun to do mate but they are deafly not as popular as getting out there and digging! But I can't do that at the moment - this should really have gone on the other channel but I just wanted to see how it went here… Hope all well with you and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
@Adam Shaw your best bet is to look for a local club while searching for your own permissions. Also look for pay and play groups (you can find these on social media platforms) as they are open to all (with the necessary insurance). It is advisable to educate yourself about ‘good practice’ and the requirements of the treasure act etc. This video is a great start.
Very interesting Alex, although I'm unlikely to take up detectoring myself. I sometimes dream of going back to search around my boyhood haunts in rural western Hampshire, but time is against me. I satisfy myself by sharing your experiences in the field. Thank you.
Oh dear Spitalhatch! Well if there is part of you that wants to do it I would try… Hampshire is a very good spot… hope you are okay and all the best, Alexander
@@HolzHammerSagas Just a bit too far from New Zealand!😁
I'm 73 and just starting out on the detecting trail. We have loads of pastoral land adjacent to where live in Norfolk, much of it belonging to friends. I really enjoyed your video and your enthusiasm, so thank you for doing this for all of us.
Thanks BarnOwl and sorry for not getting back sooner; You should be good to go on your Norfolk fields - best of luck - let me know how you get on! 😁
Excellent video, Alexander. You explained it perfectly. Permissions are the hardest things to obtain, with the hobby being so popular. If you are lucky to get a permission, make sure you talk to and show your finds to the landowner. My landowner has a display cabinet for some of my interesting finds. I don't mind this as it shows my honesty and in turn I am the only one allowed to defect on the property and no groups allowed. Looking forward to the next video on equipment.
It's very good being like that to the landowner Robert well done; I bet he really appreciates it. And thank you very much for watching - hope all well!
Hi Alex and well done. I had to smile here and there because I have been detecting for 40 years and have had to go through the door knocking ' skirmishes' and the frustrating times when the ground is as hard as iron so many many times. You seem to be covering every nook and cranny (probably with tiny exceptions) and I look forward to seeing the rest of these vids. Hope you are well on the mend my friend.
Always going to be tiny exceptions I'm afraid Colin its only when I finish I realise what I have missed but then if i put everything i forget in, the video would drag on forever; silver linings and all that! And I'm getting there slowly thank you for asking! Part II out later! All the Best, Alexander
I’m a seasoned detectorist and just like listening to you ramble…..but this was all really sound advice.
Thanks Mike thats much appreciated! Good to hear that from a pro! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
I found a silver roman coin in the early 90s in Westbury on trym on an old roman trackway I was only 14 I thought it was the new 5p 😂 it was about 50 metres from a bronze age barrow, it was just there on the surface, always been fascinated with history and your videos are great.
Good story GTS! Thank you! And hope all well with you, All the Best, Alexander
Never seen a video on land types and what each one means and the pros and cons before so a great idea. Glad you are warming to the benefits of pasture, which is my favourite type of land. Must say, in return, I’ve warmed to arable this year, maybe because the stubble was breaking off and there was far less mud! Look forward to the next one on equipment.
I really hate going out when it's muddy and wet Cath it just gets everywhere and especially round here where there is so much clay in the soil you can hardly walk for the amount of mud on your boots after about five minutes… and you can't find those little hammered coins in the mud I could go on forever…!😂
Thanks Alex for all the time you put in to producing such good videos that promotes the hobby
No problem at all Bob; thank you very much as always for watching! Hope all well!
This should be required viewing before picking up a detector. Great job, Alex!
Thanks John!!!! Be prepared ... I might be in touch a bit later...
I have detected a lot of beaches and found quite a few Roman coins. I was detecting beaches from 1969 and through the 1970s. I built my own beach machines for that purpose. I am doing beaches again now and have found Saxon and possibly other interesting periods. The modern Simultaneous Multi-Frequency machines work best on beaches.
Beach detecting is a black art and takes a while to master it is not just a case of turning up and swinging all over the beach . It pays to understand the weather and tides and know how to read the beach and be expert at knowing your detector. 👍🏻
Very, very wise words as always OP… I might need your information about beach detectors for the next video I'll be in touch…! I love the idea of beach detecting being a black art, it sure is…! Anyway, hope all really well with you and thanks very much for watching and commenting and sharing your experience. All the best, Alexander
Brilliant advice Alex as usual, l am going through the process now, first permission gained was via my local village pub
Good for you Paul - well done and let me know how you get on on it! All the Best, Alexander
Nicely done, thanks.
Cheers Philip! 🙏
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Great video.
Thanks James - glad you liked it!!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
Spot on Alex, main draw back when detecting on your own. No one can see your gold dance. Me thinks you've done a few of them 😊👍
I don't dance Grassy - never!!!! 😂 Hope all well!
This is a lovely video Alex, and very interesting to me as a UA-cam detectorist. Thank you, and wish you a speedy recovery.
i am really pleased Andrew I was a bit worried about doing something so different but its been on my mind for a while I have the opportunity now!!! Hope all well and 🙏 again!

Me too Terence! Gives me time to think!!!! Hope all well and thanks for watching! Good weekend to ya!
Great video Alexander, As someone who is still very new to detecting this is a really great composition of information. I'm looking forward for these HQ films, cant wait for what's next 😀
Thanks Dom!!! And I think i am going to type this a lot in the coming hour or so; I was a bit worried about how this would be received as its a bit different to the usual stuff! Hope all well and thanks again - its much appreciated!

Great video for a beginner Alexander! I love the beach as I love being by the sea but never seem to find much of interest, unless you like bottle tops! Haha!

My aunt and I have a dream of detecting the ranch she grew up on that the family sold off about 20 years ago. Some interesting history is indicated on it. Being in the middle of Texas, a Spanish reale is the best we could hope for which would be like a Celtic in your country. It would be great fun.
Then do it Cyndye, not a moment to lose! Watch my next video and I'll show you which metal detectors to buy!!!! 😊 Hope all well!
Very interesting Alexander. My daughter and partner are just starting MT'ing and l will tell them to watch this video. Take care and all the best, John.
Very good, thank you very much John - I hope they like it!
Brilliant, that is spot on.
Thanks Simon!!!! 🙏
Excellent like all your vídeos! You are very genuine and that’s the best part.
Bd: it would be great if someday you do a video about all the birds in your house.
Greetings from Spain😊
I will do that one day Ricardo - Actually quite a few people ask for me to do one of those videos - what part of Spain are you from? I lived in Madrid for quite a long time after I left university - I really loved it! Hope all well with you and thanks for watching, all the best, Alexander
I couldn't be the only one wondering about the birds haha I also live in Madrid (Alcala de Henares), I am originally from Venezuela but I have been in Spain for 5 years.

Very inspirational video, Im not very good at door knocking but its worth a try
I detect the local beach all the time with my equinox 800. Very rich in history from roman to modern
Thank you for doing this video, your videos are so inspiring. I shall look to see if there any clubs around Peterborough, Cambridgeshire where I live. It should be a good area for finds. I am wanting to start and introduce my boys aged 16 and 7. Thank you again.
Not at all Andrew I am glad you found it useful! Did you see part 2? Might be worth a watch before you part with your hard earned!!!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
Hi Alexander, if you paste the following into your description it will add chapters to your video timeline. Really useful for videos like this. Been a follower for a while. Keep up the good work - one of only two really decent MD channels out there. Anyway, here's your timestamps, paste into the bottom of your description exactly as it is:

05:36 - Clubs Digs and Rallies
06:54 - Land: Intro
07:16 - Land: The Beach

Good point Geoffrey I will - I hadn't thought of that as i don't usually do videos like this!!! And thanks for watching - All the Best, Alexander
I have done chapters for the next video too - out this evening - thanks for the advice, Geoffrey! 🙏
@@HolzHammerSagas Pleasure. Keen to watch it. On a side note... I'm thinking of becoming a free mason just to get permissions! Most farmers are free masons surely ;) and if not, maybe a few esoteric handshakes might go in my favour.

@@EldricEonar not sure about farmers... but one team of guns I look after is full of masons they are fascinating to talk to! Let me know the funny handshake once you know it!!! 😂
Thank you for making this video! I live in Birmingham, UK and i am from a British Asian background and i am very interested in getting involved with this hobby.
I can easily purchase all the important metal detecting tools but what i find difficult to do is actually getting the permissions from the landowners. There may be a particular piece of land that i may want to metal detect on but i have no idea how to find out who the landowner is.
I plan on metal detecting this year and i think the best way to start for a beginner like me would be to join a metal detecting club and take part in these metal detecting rallies.
Very good luck to you Tom I look forward to hearing what you find... All the Best, Alexander
Yes, who owns the field you are looking at! I find the best way is to knock on the door of the nearest house to the field, they always seem to know who the landowner is.
@@colinsmale8146 good advice Colin thank you!
It has to be arable for me , if I ever go detecting again, lots of permission but have a real back problem ,good video for those just starting, get well soon.

Hi Alexander you will be back out detecting soon , I've had to have 9 months off work and detecting due to having my right foot amputated. But am getting much better now new prosthetic foot soon so I will be out detecting soon , let's hope it isn't a metal one 😄 all the best Mike
Thanks Michael and thanks for asking! Hope all well with you!
Yes a metal one may prove tricky!!!! Gosh Michael that sounds serious - hope you have healed well and very good news you may be out and about agin soon - please let me know how you get on! All the Best, Alexander
Hi very interesting video I’m just starting up metal detecting and I live in Southampton you said you lived in Hampshire and got knocked back a lot asking permission I do hope I can find somewhere to detect I also don’t drive either 😢
well good luck Tones... get your courage up and just keep asking - have you got a bike?
I tend to go pasture only, I’ve found a few hammered coins here and there on my digs. Undisturbed land is the best in my opinion.
I agree Wiggzst its certainly the most romantic if you know what I mean - hard to find though... hope all well and thanks for watching
@@HolzHammerSagas yes, there’s definitely something about them.
I do tend to look at pasture fields differently now I’m more experienced, the fields have to have a certain look, I find I’ve found much more things rather than the fields I’ve searched that I haven’t been so interested in. When I say a certain look it’s dips, flats, small inclines or unusual looking pasture. The dips can be Roman roads, the flats and small inclines can be potential old carriageways and unusual pasture can be evidence of old structures.
very interesting
Thanks Vincent! 🙏 Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
I have been thinking of doing one of these, lol. You beat me to it
Do one as well Nathanial the whole point of UA-cam is that people endlessly go over the same topics over and over again - every time we make a film about digging holes is the same as the last one someone did! And you will definitely put a different spin on it too..do it! I look forward to seeing it!
Hi Alex, excellent video, always love the HQ thing!
My brand new Garrett is readying for action! I have opportunity coming up on prime plot soon (will let you know)!
Great video, great subject, valuable information!
Is there really silver in every field?
Not particularly bothered over gold or silver, would be equally over the moon with crotal bell (donga or not)! 😄
Get back to physical best real soon, and return to permissions, we need you!
Martin 😘
How exciting Martin I can't wait to hear your news - And I think there is probably silver in every field I really do… I think I made a video about it once on the other channel! Hope all well with you very good luck and hope to hear from you soon all the best, Alexander
Is that a Kakariki on your desk?! We used to raise them a few years ago. I have s few places to detect, but have to find who owns the land. SO glad you didn't start with 'buying' a detector!!! Lol have a great day!
It might well be Barb I will have to check, it might be a bit big... are you a New Zealander? Hope all well
Hi Alex great channel and great advice what is the exact make and model of your machine and is it a great all rounder having no screen to look at i.e. both field and beach i currently have a Garrett ace 150 and just rely on the tones as that's pretty much all i can do I'm wondering whether i will get better results with a machine like yours and I'm here in the UK on the south coast
Hi Moto south, hope all well! It definitely sounds like you need an upgrade I went from the Garrett Ace 250 to my present machine which is the XP Deus Lite -no remote - all the information is audio and it's not great for the beach either but if you read the manual carefully and watch the videos on UA-cam about the Deus Lite you'll soon get the hang of it and it's a bloody brilliant machine cost me £1300 quid back in the day you can pick one up for £450 now!!!! See my link to it in this video... There is absolutely no doubt that you will get better results once you get the hang of it but as I said I don't think it's ideal for beach work but bullet for everything else! All the Best, Alexander
@@HolzHammerSagas thanks Alex I wonder if the deus lite 2 is the one to go for as I think it has a beach mode my problem is I only have the 1 permission and I’m always digging rubbish with my machine so if I want a change it will be the beach for me which I haven’t been able to do so far as the Garrett ace 150 doesn’t do beach I hope you are well on the road to recovery as I do miss your out in the field videos but I’m currently making my way through your older videos and also your other channels we are spoilt for choice.regards Jon
Great stuff Alex, and good to see you're managing to keep going. 🙏 Permissions *are* a tough one it's true, but I've finally started getting a snowball effect - a bit like busses as we say up North: 'You wait around fer hours for one, an' then three turn up at once!...' 😅🤣 Take care matey, and make sure you get some rest... The snowball effect is a good way of putting it and it definitely happens that way Bobby - I'm sure it's a little bit because of karma and a little bit because word gets out that you're a nice trustworthy guy… Hope all well with you!

I know I'm a bit late to this video, but hopefully my questions are still valid.
I can't seem to see here, or anywhere for that matter, answers to the questions that have me wracking my brain about permissions.
1. What's in it for the landowner??? If I was big landowner, I'd probably chase everyone!! ...are unofficial deals struck? (I probably shouldn't be asking that here!) ..my brothers old father in law used to leave a bottle of malt on the step of the Lairds house in Scotland whenever he wanted to go fishing on his land!! That sort of thing.
2. When is the best time to ask for permission? Obviously if its farm land it will be seasonal, so there must be a couple of good times in the year, maybe?
3. Is it best to get a permission in writing?
4. When speaking or corresponding with a landowner, is it recommended to lay out all the official rules regarding finds / treasure, in advance, or will that just phase them? Just keep it simple?
5. Do I need to tell the landowner about myself? I.e. submit a kind of unofficial CV, with interests, previous permissions & detecting experience and finds etc.
If anyone can help, thanks in advance 👍

Hello my friends have been tenant farmers on the same land for over 50 years do i need permition from them and the estate owners ?
Hi Wobbly, I think technically both should be aware but i think as long standing tenants who obviuosly have a very good relationship with the Estate, unless the Estate have expressly not allowed the tenants to allow metal detecting then I'd just go for it! Good luck!
thnx bud n1
No probs Mr E. thanks for watching!
It's got tougher here in the US getting permission. People are more aware of values
Is that right Don, how interesting... Maybe it's the same everywhere… hope all well with you anyway!
If our detectorists find an 1838, its a boon!! The US only goes back so far unless its on the East coast
Is that right Barb - makes sense now I think about it... 😁
It sounds pretty hard to get in touch with the owners. There are loads of country pubs where a few of the farmers might frequent and you could talk to them right there on the subject, but as they are mostly the older guys you might talk to the farm workers, foramen/charge hands who go in for lunch or of an evening. they get up very early in the morning for work and work until dark during planting and harvesting times, so they might get a bit grumpy! Id like to see a vid of you making a permissions deal over the phone or through email or speak to the local council
Thanks Peter for that and good point - farmers can be a bit grumpy at all times not just harvest I should know my father was a grumpy farmer!!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander

I'm sorry I think you are wrong, I think you need to think of what type of detecting, then purchase an appropriate machine as this then gives you the incentive to get permission or go beaching. Now I live in a seaside town and not knowing what I was doing I started on the beach only to find out that my detector wasn't quite up to beaching and one morning I had an epiphany I work at a hotel and that was my first permission
