Wow. Your beginner videos are a breath of fresh air. I have been told by my doctors to get out and exercise. So, I bought a metal detector. I've been out six times in two weeks. I've found something nice every time. But Lord, are my legs sore! It's working!

Hi there, wow that's one way to lose a ring. I hope that you remember the location, you should be able to find that pretty easily. I regret to inform that the ring is still in the forest. It could only have been on a small patch as I removed it to keep it clean. My assumption, due to days of searching the same 100m strip, is that a crow is very pleased with his new addition to his collection. There were dozens watching me waiting to help clean the area after the deer was harvested. That's life. I have, however, found about everything in that area from aluminum cans to brass ammunition casings. Been enjoying your channel. I wish I could come to older places and search for old coins. If I find things as old as some of the stuff you find in my area, it is almost exclusively always stone. I have found a handful on arrowheads and countless shards of worked flint. This metal detection hobby is a whole new angle on stuff I already do.
@@woodymcwooderson7579 ah sorry to hear that you did not locate the ring. Perhaps it could have ended up in the deer carcass or maybe the back of your car/truck. Sometimes we think we lose something somewhere, then it turns up a few months later somewhere else. Pleased that you are enjoying the hobby though

I used to be a member of a local archeology group that did metal detector taster sessions. The main difficulty I found beginners had was keeping metal objects well away from the coil when searching and recovering finds, leading to false signals and confusion. You didn't really cover the technique for pinpointing with the detector to determine the exact location of a signal, so as to avoid damaging finds when digging. I have noticed that a lot of experienced detectorists on youtube (including you) allow the spade to point inwards at an angle when removing the plug, which can lead to hitting the find especially when its deep. I hope I haven't been too negative here, the video was a good starting point for new entrants to our great hobby.
Hey John how are you doing? Thanks for getting in touch with your feedback, it is very much appreciated as I try to use viewer feedback to improve what I do. Yes pinpointing with the coil is something I should probably have mentioned and done a little lesson with using a target and the paper. My bad on that one. Its a lot harder than it looks to create a video like this, I actually did my research, watched other channels guides and wrote a script including topics to cover. I missed a couple of things, but I hope that newcomers to the hobby can take something useful from this video :) Thanks so much for watching and offering your thoughts. Hey duke great vid very helpful for me thanks …..I did my first detecting the other week and found some really old rusty ornate iron pieces …..I have no idea how to clean and look up about these but wondered if you had any advice. ? I wish I could send you a pic as you would probably know better than me lol …..I’m sure one piece is a very old door knocker but it’s so thick with rust and where I found it doesn’t make any sense …..I look forward to any advice Jason 😊👍
@@jasonhumphries1271 hi Jason, thanks for getting in touch, generally in the UK we ignore iron as 99% of the time iron is just rusty farm junk. I did once find a huge rusty iron lump hammer that I expect would clean up great. I've no idea how to clean rust, Google might know more. Those early months of the hobby can be frustrating, stick at it. What machine do you use?

That was a very thorough introduction to metal detecting. I will be taking away: diging three quarters round the hole to use the grass roots as a hinge to put it back and the deeper the find, the older the find. I'm glad you put in "You will need patience, just keeep going and don't give up" I know from experience people watch a twenty minute video and don't realise that it was six hours of metal detecting ? Cheers mate you've given me a lot to think about, as I start metal detecting and probably saved me a lot of trial and error making stuid desisions 👍 I look forward to watching more videos and seeinng how YOU do things.

With the understanding that this is a detector for those on a budget ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH and that it obviously can't compare with higher end models costing hundreds of dollars, having said that I can say I am very pleased with what I got for the low cost. There are cheap detectors out there likely not worth getting, but this model is an exception to that. I have read very good comment of the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV on a metal detecting forum. If you are on a budget or simply don't want to spend a lot to give this hobby a try to see if you want to keep at it, then I recommend this model as likely being one of the best you can get for one being in the low price range. The 5 star rating is to reflect 5 stars for one in this price range. This comment is from my friend as it was the gift he wanted to buy for himself with some of the money he got for Christmas.

My daughter (11) has also wanted one aspeshly since easter holidays because her friend has a metal detecter they found a old plate or bowl not sure, a axe head not sure but shaped like one and a bit of potary and also a garden nome in a different place in my daughters friend garden in by a hedge

Great video!! Im gonna start this spring I got 2 detectors a pin pointer all the small thing for digging. I also picked up a drone and am looking for old maps of the locations I plan on visiting. Knowing the history of the land and getting a bird’s eye view should help big time. fast forward 2 years.. i bought a metal detector and a pinpointer a little over a year ago. it's not been out of the box. my son sent me this upload last night, after telling him I've felt a bit intimidated. I got my first metal detector today! It’s a cheaper one from amazon. Got it put together and went to my back yard. Found a few small pieces of metal and found a quarter! So I know it works, I just need to practice using it. Great video and it was helpful!

Hi mate exceptionally well produced tutorial and just wish I'd had the advantage of seeing this when I first started in 2020. Just a couple of things struck me though , and a couple of guys have already pointed out in the comments but worth repeating ..... Your own experience as a seasoned detectorist enables you to pinpoint your target without using the machine's facility , but to a beginner , that facility is so useful and should have been covered I feel . Also , a little more time spent on how to go about gaining permissions would have been really helpful I feel . Especially having witnessed your own technique myself ( talking to your mate's mam voice etc 😂 ) . And lastly , altho you don't use one yourself , a digger/trowel / tool for target extraction once pinpointed is very useful . Having said all that , you can't think of everything mate and it was the best tutorial I've seen . 👍🍻
Hi mate, yeah I did not mention the machines pinpoint feature, but then I did not mention most of the other features of it. I thought I did an ok job of showing how to pinpoint without that feature. Gaining permissions is something I plan on doing a dedicated video on in the future, so that's the reason I did not talk about that. In my opinion and experience, digging tools are not a key part of kit required for a detectorist. There are tonnes of other things I could of mentioned, but this was about the basics of getting started for a beginner. I did my research and watched 4 or 5 other channels version of their guides. I also did some planning and made an almost script and topics to cover. It was actually quite difficult to execute this video, a lot harder than I thought it would be. Someone else mentioned about using gloves. As always I appreciate folks feedback. I saw this as a great oppurtunity to create a video that will carry on generating views over time when newcomers to the hobby come along and search 'How to metal detect'. Will be very interested to see how it performs (currently very bad haha).

Hey Dave, I could of talked about gloves yes, I could of talked about footwear, detecting etiquette, closing gates, etc etc, so many things I could have talked about. I simply wanted to cover the basics to get someone started in the hobby. Maybe if I'd filmed this on a cold winters day I'd of got gloves in there. But it was 20+ degrees when i filmed this. Re-scanning the plug is another good tip too
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I always wear gloves, no idea what is in the hole screw top bottle cap with broken glass neck, rusty nail, sharp edge metal, also animal urine, chemicals etc. Always have rescanned hole before refilling, thankful for the times it was worth it.
Brilliant video, I'm a novice and your tips have helped me a lot. I use the Garret Ace 300, my first, so I will probably upgrade to a little more expensive detector as soon as I find enough gold relics to buy it!

Thanks for the video. Going out today for the first time just to mess about and familiarize myself with my new detector (MineLab Vanquish 540). My pinpointer was delayed, and isn't coming until tomorrow. Hopefully that's not too much of a handicap. I've never metal detected, but my uncle has been obsessed with relic hunting for as long as I can remember.

I just bought my first detector, just got it yesterday, Its not a high end brand, It is called the Hazlewolke 1030, picked it up New for $120 cdn, heading out this afternoon for my very first adventure. I remember when I first got a detector. it was only a cheap ish one but on the second find ever I got a lovely medieval silver hammered coin. later on I found 3 more of them!! It’s such a fun hobby everyone should give it a go it’s worth it 😊

Last summer i picked up a Fisher in a mid price range, and began practicing with it in my own yard an a neighbor's yard. Even though i have some experience using it, i found your video very helpful. My best find so far was a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant that is still in great condition. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Perhaps it is some type of weight. I have found a few modern US coins, but nothing very wonderful yet. Anyway, i am retired and have plenty of time for the hobby. The weather is getting better now here in New England. It will be time to get back out there. I still have a lot of space in my own yard to search before venturing elsewhere. Thank you for sharing your experience and providing such great video content! I can't wait to get back out there.

I've been on a group dig for my first ever detect and saw them wait for the paying detecting people then swoop in whe someone found something then also saw them taking note where things were found and when most people had left they went and dug every signal in that area. So yes my 1st experience was a shock seeing that 😢👍

If something falls out of your pocket on to a grass or earth field, it quickly becomes pulled under ground by gravity and ground movement. Wow. Your beginner videos are a breath of fresh air. I have been told by my doctors to get out and exercise. So, I bought a metal detector. I've been out six times in two weeks. I've found something nice every time. But Lord, are my legs sore! It's working!

Hi there, wow that's one way to lose a ring. I hope that you remember the location, you should be able to find that pretty easily. I regret to inform that the ring is still in the forest. It could only have been on a small patch as I removed it to keep it clean. My assumption, due to days of searching the same 100m strip, is that a crow is very pleased with his new addition to his collection. There were dozens watching me waiting to help clean the area after the deer was harvested.
That's life.
I have, however, found about everything in that area from aluminum cans to brass ammunition casings. Been enjoying your channel. I wish I could come to older places and search for old coins. If I find things as old as some of the stuff you find in my area, it is almost exclusively always stone. I have found a handful on arrowheads and countless shards of worked flint. This metal detection hobby is a whole new angle on stuff I already do.
@@woodymcwooderson7579 ah sorry to hear that you did not locate the ring. Perhaps it could have ended up in the deer carcass or maybe the back of your car/truck. Sometimes we think we lose something somewhere, then it turns up a few months later somewhere else. Pleased that you are enjoying the hobby though

I used to be a member of a local archeology group that did metal detector taster sessions. The main difficulty I found beginners had was keeping metal objects well away from the coil when searching and recovering finds, leading to false signals and confusion. You didn't really cover the technique for pinpointing with the detector to determine the exact location of a signal, so as to avoid damaging finds when digging. I have noticed that a lot of experienced detectorists on youtube (including you) allow the spade to point inwards at an angle when removing the plug, which can lead to hitting the find especially when its deep. I hope I haven't been too negative here, the video was a good starting point for new entrants to our great hobby.

Yes pinpointing with the coil is something I should probably have mentioned and done a little lesson with using a target and the paper. My bad on that one. Its a lot harder than it looks to create a video like this, I actually did my research, watched other channels guides and wrote a script including topics to cover. Hey duke great vid very helpful for me thanks …..I did my first detecting the other week and found some really old rusty ornate iron pieces …..I have no idea how to clean and look up about these but wondered if you had any advice. ? I wish I could send you a pic as you would probably know better than me lol …..I’m sure one piece is a very old door knocker but it’s so thick with rust and where I found it doesn’t make any sense …..I look forward to any advice

I did once find a huge rusty iron lump hammer that I expect would clean up great. I've no idea how to clean rust, Google might know more. Those early months of the hobby can be frustrating, stick at it. What machine do you use?

That was a very thorough introduction to metal detecting. I will be taking away: diging three quarters round the hole to use the grass roots as a hinge to put it back and the deeper the find, the older the find. I'm glad you put in "You will need patience, just keeep going and don't give up" I know from experience people watch a twenty minute video and don't realise that it was six hours of metal detecting ? Cheers mate you've given me a lot to think about, as I start metal detecting and probably saved me a lot of trial and error making stuid desisions 👍 I look forward to watching more videos and seeinng how YOU do things.

With the understanding that this is a detector for those on a budget ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH and that it obviously can't compare with higher end models costing hundreds of dollars, having said that I can say I am very pleased with what I got for the low cost. There are cheap detectors out there likely not worth getting, but this model is an exception to that. I have read very good comment of the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV on a metal detecting forum. If you are on a budget or simply don't want to spend a lot to give this hobby a try to see if you want to keep at it, then I recommend this model as likely being one of the best you can get for one being in the low price range. The 5 star rating is to reflect 5 stars for one in this price range. This comment is from my friend as it was the gift he wanted to buy for himself with some of the money he got for Christmas.

My daughter (11) has also wanted one aspeshly since easter holidays because her friend has a metal detecter they found a old plate or bowl not sure, a axe head not sure but shaped like one and a bit of potary and also a garden nome in a different place in my daughters friend garden in by a hedge

Great video!! Im gonna start this spring I got 2 detectors a pin pointer all the small thing for digging. I also picked up a drone and am looking for old maps of the locations I plan on visiting. Knowing the history of the land and getting a bird’s eye view should help big time. I got my first metal detector today! It’s a cheaper one from amazon. Got it put together and went to my back yard. Found a few small pieces of metal and found a quarter! So I know it works, I just need to practice using it. Great video and it was helpful!

Hi mate exceptionally well produced tutorial and just wish I'd had the advantage of seeing this when I first started in 2020.
Just a couple of things struck me though , and a couple of guys have already pointed out in the comments but worth repeating ..... Your own experience as a seasoned detectorist enables you to pinpoint your target without using the machine's facility , but to a beginner , that facility is so useful and should have been covered I feel . Also , a little more time spent on how to go about gaining permissions would have been really helpful I feel . Especially having witnessed your own technique myself ( talking to your mate's mam voice etc 😂 ) . And lastly , altho you don't use one yourself , a digger/trowel / tool for target extraction once pinpointed is very useful . Having said all that , you can't think of everything mate and it was the best tutorial I've seen . 👍🍻
Hi mate, yeah I did not mention the machines pinpoint feature, but then I did not mention most of the other features of it. I thought I did an ok job of showing how to pinpoint without that feature. Gaining permissions is something I plan on doing a dedicated video on in the future, so that's the reason I did not talk about that. In my opinion and experience, digging tools are not a key part of kit required for a detectorist. There are tonnes of other things I could of mentioned, but this was about the basics of getting started for a beginner. I did my research and watched 4 or 5 other channels version of their guides. I also did some planning and made an almost script and topics to cover. It was actually quite difficult to execute this video, a lot harder than I thought it would be. Someone else mentioned about using gloves. As always I appreciate folks feedback. I saw this as a great oppurtunity to create a video that will carry on generating views over time when newcomers to the hobby come along and search 'How to metal detect'. Will be very interested to see how it performs (currently very bad haha).

shd have set an example and worn gloves before putting your hands in the hole. Also rescan the hole and plug before replacing the plug.
Hey Dave, I could of talked about gloves yes, I could of talked about footwear, detecting etiquette, closing gates, etc etc, so many things I could have talked about. I simply wanted to cover the basics to get someone started in the hobby. Maybe if I'd filmed this on a cold winters day I'd of got gloves in there. But it was 20+ degrees when i filmed this. Re-scanning the plug is another good tip too
@@TheDukesOfDerbyshire I always wear gloves, no idea what is in the hole screw top bottle cap with broken glass neck, rusty nail, sharp edge metal, also animal urine, chemicals etc. Always have rescanned hole before refilling, thankful for the times it was worth it.
@@davetaylor812 it is definitely good practice to wewr gloves. And I did once cut the end of my finger very badly many years ago
Brilliant video, I'm a novice and your tips have helped me a lot. I use the Garret Ace 300, my first, so I will probably upgrade to a little more expensive detector as soon as I find enough gold relics to buy it!

My pinpointer was delayed, and isn't coming until tomorrow. Hopefully that's not too much of a handicap. I've never metal detected, but my uncle has been obsessed with relic hunting for as long as I can remember.

I just bought my first detector, just got it yesterday, Its not a high end brand, It is called the Hazlewolke 1030, picked it up New for $120 cdn, heading out this afternoon for my very first adventure. I remember when I first got a detector. it was only a cheap ish one but on the second find ever I got a lovely medieval silver hammered coin. later on I found 3 more of them!! It’s such a fun hobby everyone should give it a go it’s worth it 😊

I think it took me 18 months to find my first hammered, but it was a beauty, a Queen Mary 1st Groat, one of my best coins, an absolute beauty. Last summer i picked up a Fisher in a mid price range, and began practicing with it in my own yard an a neighbor's yard. Even though i have some experience using it, i found your video very helpful. My best find so far was a vintage sterling silver heart shaped pendant that is still in great condition. I also found an old piece of lead shaped like a padlock, but it is not a padlock. Perhaps it is some type of weight. I have found a few modern US coins, but nothing very wonderful yet.
Anyway, i am retired and have plenty of time for the hobby. The weather is getting better now here in New England. It will be time to get back out there. I still have a lot of space in my own yard to search before venturing elsewhere. Thank you for sharing your experience and providing such great video content! I can't wait to get back out there.

I've been on a group dig for my first ever detect and saw them wait for the paying detecting people then swoop in whe someone found something then also saw them taking note where things were found and when most people had left they went and dug every signal in that area.
So yes my 1st experience was a shock seeing that 😢👍

great video! how do you find stuff under the ground? Wouldn't it be easier at the beach? How would you lose stuff were you are detecting?
Hi, man kind has dropped and lost coins and artefacts for thousands of years. If something falls out of your pocket on to a grass or earth field, it quickly becomes pulled under ground by gravity and ground movement. Also, in the olden days almost everyone had jobs working in fields and working the land etc. There are trillions of coins, artefacts and other bits of metal out there waiting to be discovered by people with metal detectors. Used it once and no. My son came not long after I got it so been rather busy being a dad but soon as he is a little bit older and even if I have more time to myself in-between work etc I'll definitely be out detecting! @@TehhDesiree
