The original video was hit with 'Limited adds', so this is a re-upload, but I made it better with new scenes and 4K upscaled footage. But why Limited adds.? I think it's because UA-cam has placed this channel on alert and is deliberately hitting these videos before it's even done uploading yet. What does Limited adds mean? The Allies wondered what made the Germans so fast at acquiting targets or to successfully hit on fast second shots, by interrogating captive German crewmen they found out that it was common practice to keep the sight graduated to 600 meters as it was known to be the distance more shots were taken at, then aim higher or lower depending on the rangefinder reading, so no further adjustment was needed except for very long range shots, pretty much what we do when rifle shooting with a particular caliber and bullet weight. Experienced panzer commanders and crews could be quite deadly.
When the Tiger was on the Eastern front they were at their best. Long distances they could pick there targets off. Long expanses of open field and a gun that was state of the art at the time. Wow. Amazing video. Great great footage.
I noticed that too ,dam long shots they were making ,in the wide open fields made them super deady ,and the gun handled so well inside the turret ,and with guys like Witman driving around ,even with the small numbers they put a serious hurt on the Russians ,I often wondered how they got side tracked to making the next huge tanks with such low speed and not stick with the panthers and tiger 1 and stugs in massive numbers

The sucess of the Tigers were due to heavy armour, superior optics, and of course the 88mm. They were expensive to make and maintain, there was just not enough of them. Still, the most iconic tank of WW2. Tiger an der front!
Germans were loosing on all fields, air, navy, tanks. Not because they are bad, but they are literally against the world. And lacking so much important resources, like imagine, most of tigers did not get destroyed, they either break(need maintenace), or lack of fuel
And the Tiger crews just loved their toy...it was so comfy they felt quite at home inside, plus the overwhelming feeling of being safe in it as the Panzer could withstand most of the hits it received.
Due to the expensive production and maintenance, all German heavy tank models were detrimental to the German war effort. Heavy tanks were more an expression of German forteress mentality (Safety first!) than a economic/rational aproach to the war effort.
Seeing the wrecked T-34s, I’m reminded of the Stalin quote, “Quantity has a quality of its own.” Tigers were impressive beasts, especially in defense. But the Germans were just overwhelmed by shear numbers of T-34s, Shermans, Cromwells, etc.
The Tiger is a great looking tank but it was over engineered and met it’s match with the Firefly. Later variants of the Tiger were simply underpowered.
UNREAL! I'm an old tanker from the M60A1 days. My basic course for officers was in March 1979. Our class had the first two crews to train on the brand new M60A3s! This video with the real sounds of war just took off 50 yrs of my life!
In the 40's the Germans had tanks that looked like something you'd see in the 21st century AND they were flying JETS. Amongst many other futuristic contraptions. Leave it to the Germans..

I miss when armies looked badass. The German army of ww2 looked and were badass in every way. The soldiers looked like death itself, their tanks looked like merciless killing machines, their planes were like hell from the sky and their weaponry overall sounded like pure terror. Plus the fact they took so much territory so fast and being able to hold out against so many enemies for as long as they did.
Great sound. One of the roles my grandpa had in world war II was motorcycle dispatch-carrier. He had raced motor cycles back home in USA and could fix them too. Supposedly, he told my dad that one time he crashed his bike because rain and roads were terrible. Damaged his tail pipe/exhaust tube. So he found a 88mm spent canister and built a giant muffler for his bike. He told my dad that whenever he road through places lots of people dove for cover or ran away. He didnt understand why...until in battle of the bulge he came under german 88 gun fire....his bike sounded like an incoming 88 round! 😅 He also said you could hear the german tanks coming and differentiate them from American tanks because of super loud "squeaking." German ball bearing factories had been bombed.
Unfortunately it sounds very unrealistic that a motorcycle could sound like an incoming 88mm round, basically it had to be superquiet and go 800m/s++?! xDDD The second part about the enginesounds of the tanks is smth u can always differentiate with experience, all of them has unique sounds. The squeakyness does NOT come from the ballbearings tho, its the rollers/tensioners for the tracks. And since most german tanks never used rubber pads on their tracks, it was alot of steel. If u'd have a ballbearing (in most cases rollerbearings/needlebearings) squeaking like that, with all that weightload onto it, it would be seized within minutes.

The Germans got obsessed with the "bigger" part, though. I don't think the Tigers would have fared as well if they weren't mainly fighting a defensive war, which Germany was from around late 1942. Their supply lines kept getting shorter, while the Allies had to transport their stuff through longer and longer distances.

It was not just the hi velocity 88 mm precision gun, quality ammo, the Tiger 1 had high precision Zeiss optics. This combo resulted in accurate one shot, one kill. Again, the weakness was the tank was not fully debugged… need a powerful Diesel engine, transmission, reliability. Not to mention large numbers with air support. Possible only in peace time.
What’s wild is you can see how absolutely monstrously heavy the Tigers were, they don’t even budge aside from the gun recoil when it fires. Thanks for sharing!
That's why the title of this should be... Original "Dubbed" Sound. They didn't have quality portable recording equipment during field action like that. They Shall Not Grow Old was very enjoyable and should be shown on Remembrance Day, now Memorial Day, ...here in the States. As a matter of fact, they should begin the presentation just after the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in commemoration.

I believe it's available on UA-cam, but even WWII footage is often lacking and people just arbitrarily put in stock machinegun fire sounds. I find the sounds of war almost more intriguing than the footage. Maybe because it is so rare.
@@oldesertguy9616 For sure, as long as it was a stationary scenario. They did preposition some, but most all were just dubbed later because even then the quality wasn't the best. Watching vids on them doing dub sounds really makes you see how the ear is very suspectable to fake sounds.
The sound from the 88mm in the Tiger tank is certainly terrifying, those who did not hear it from the opposing side are dead or wounded. One of the best artillery solutions in WW2. He started out as an AA gun. An incredibly effective weapon...

Stumbled on this channel thanks to YT's recommendation (judging by the comments here, a very unusual thing!) and am glad to have found it! Good quality vids and nice sounds (though I'm not sure if any are post-war dubs). The sounds of the shots filmed from inside the tanks do closely match contemporary accounts' description of what the 88 sounded like - high pitched bark. One thing's for certain - 1:20 those troops would have had a real unpleasant time sitting where they were! Being anywhere near the muzzle end of a sizable calibre weapon when it fires is LOUD. Especially with the KwK36's muzzle brake venting the blast sideways - that is, in their general direction 😖 Meanwhile, keep up the great work!
If these PC types didn't get their panties in a wad so easily and want to disable all the guns, we might have a Tiger left with an operable tube that could be fired and recorded for historical purposes. Although some company would probably charge $50,000 per round to make up some 88 shells 🤣

Seeing and hearing this, just on TV, was very impressive. Just firing it, and being inside the Tiger and fairly close around it outside, in real life, appears would be a pretty tough job. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it, to say the least. If I were, and alive, I would be doing some sincere praying, along with taking whatever cover presents itself. I'm sure there was more powder in the shell casing than average, from the sound of it firing. It sounded heavier than I would expect 88mm to sound. The 88 originating as an anti-aircraft cannon, I guess would need a relatively large amount of propellant for high muzzle velocity and range.

It's a bit misleading. The tiger was much heavier than most other tanks and had a much bigger gun. . The russian kv1 was probably the only other heavy tank in the early years.
I won't get into the thorny and never-ending debate about its merits as a tank, but there's no question that this is the tankiest-looking tank ever made. It's what the general public imagines when they hear the word "tank".
4 minutes is long enough! Can you imagine going up against this tank in combat knowing you don't stand a chance of defeating it! Heck, once you were hit by one of it's shells you were already dead, not knowing where it came from!
My dad, who went in DDay+1 in France, then Belguim then Germany, said that there was a firing ring that came off of that 88 shell as it left the barrel. He said it was so weird sounding.
I love the Tiger 🐅 Tank though I do sometimes wonder 🤔 how many Allied Tank crews were knocked out by one of these beasties firing from such a distance that they had absolutely no idea that it was even there! Heard a story about one knocking out (destroying would have been a much better description!) a T-34 which it hit so hard that it's turret flew up into the air and it's engine flew out of the rear of the vehicle as it literally blew apart at the seams! A Soviet T-60 light Tank (20mm cannon armament!) bagged 2 Tigers by drawing them towards some 76.2 mm guns which promptly knocked them out! Both crewmen of the T-60 got medals for that. We've all heard the legend of Michael Wittmann's Tiger 🐅 at Villers-Bocage which is just insane 😳.
The T34 exploding was not likely only due to the German round, but rather the result of catastrophic on-board ammo going off. These internal explosions were tremendously powerful. Wittmann could have accomplished that feat using a Sherman or Cromwell. He caught that group completely by surprise and it was his boldness and excellent tactics that caused such a lopsided outcome. In fact, at those point blank ranges the 75mm Sherman gun firing HE might have been even more devastating. Faster rate of fire too!
UK had the 3.7 inch AA Gun (92mm) their equivalent of 88mm, British Army used it as an AntiTank in Exercises in 1936 but the AA Regiments decided and were allowed they were exclusively AA and not used as Artillery or Anti Tank , this puzzled Rommel and Africa Korps as tye 88mm was essntial to their defensive successes, Von Luck one of Rommels Officers wrote only time he knew of when 3.7 inch was usdd against panzers was when Tobruk was captured, when Panzers drove down into the Port the AA Guns depressed their barrels and fired on ghem, they did not have Armour Piercing (they had in 1936) but their AA Shells did serious damage to the Panzers without destroying them; Von Luck was in command of only Panzer Regiment in Normandy on D Day , well worth reading his book especially his time as prisoner of Russians , very, very interesting . Another example of British Failure, British Tanks at beginning of WW2 were as good if not better than German but as the guns required got bigger the Brit Tanks were restricted in width to enable them to be transported by Rail, most obviously seen in Churchill Tank wh8ch if wider could have had a wider Turret Ring and mount a bigger gun (3,7 inch?) , it could have been s British Tiger , Germans had same problem but they removed tracks and outer wheels to transport Tigers and Panthers nd replaced them when they reached their destination

Transmission was bad, same as the Panthers'. Prone to over heating and mechanical break down.
The final 75mm gun on Panther had even better velocity than the tiger 88mm
The Tiger just LOOKS like the last thing you would EVER want to be the last t hing you ever saw.
A Pershing was destroyed by this little thing. Imagine the King Tiger or the JagdTiger 122mm

The stand-off range is unbelievable. Those 88s could do it all. Anti tank, aircraft etc.
That's one of the things I loved about the movie "They shall not grow old." They put sound to the footage, which is always lacking in documentaries.

@@Normandy1944 they actually have some original recordings of artillery fire during a battle in WWI. I believe it's available on UA-cam, but even WWII footage is often lacking and people just arbitrarily put in stock machinegun fire sounds. I find the sounds of war almost more intriguing than the footage. Maybe because it is so rare.
@@oldesertguy9616 For sure, as long as it was a stationary scenario. They did preposition some, but most all were just dubbed later because even then the quality wasn't the best. Watching vids on them doing dub sounds really makes you see how the ear is very suspectable to fake sounds.

The sound from the 88mm in the Tiger tank is certainly terrifying, those who did not hear it from the opposing side are dead or wounded. One of the best artillery solutions in WW2. He started out as an AA gun. An incredibly effective weapon...
What are you talking about ? Noone heard the sound, because the projectile is faster, than the speed of sound.

Yes, WW2 films were not "talkies." Gun camera footage always has sound dubbed in.

Stumbled on this channel thanks to YT's recommendation (judging by the comments here, a very unusual thing!) and am glad to have found it! Good quality vids and nice sounds (though I'm not sure if any are post-war dubs). The sounds of the shots filmed from inside the tanks do closely match contemporary accounts' description of what the 88 sounded like - high pitched bark. One thing's for certain - 1:20 those troops would have had a real unpleasant time sitting where they were! Being anywhere near the muzzle end of a sizable calibre weapon when it fires is LOUD. Especially with the KwK36's muzzle brake venting the blast sideways - that is, in their general direction 😖

The Tiger is fierce but a King Tiger with a trained crew and no mechanical or fuel issues on the open Steppe would surely reek havoc.
They all had mechanical and fuel issues, though.
And the quality of their armor was poor that late in the war.

Seeing and hearing this, just on TV, was very impressive. Just firing it, and being inside the Tiger and fairly close around it outside, in real life, appears would be a pretty tough job. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it, to say the least. If I were, and alive, I would be doing some sincere praying, along with taking whatever cover presents itself. I'm sure there was more powder in the shell casing than average, from the sound of it firing. It sounded heavier than I would expect 88mm to sound. The 88 originating as an anti-aircraft cannon, I guess would need a relatively large amount of propellant for high muzzle velocity and range.
I keep going back and forth for years on which looked better the Tiger or Panther. I am deciding - it's the Tiger. BEAST!!

It's a bit misleading. The tiger was much heavier than most other tanks and had a much bigger gun. . The russian kv1 was probably the only other heavy tank in the early years.

4 minutes is long enough! Can you imagine going up against this tank in combat knowing you don't stand a chance of defeating it! Heck, once you were hit by one of it's shells you were already dead, not knowing where it came from!
My dad, who went in DDay+1 in France, then Belguim then Germany, said that there was a firing ring that came off of that 88 shell as it left the barrel. He said it was so weird sounding.

I love the Tiger 🐅 Tank though I do sometimes wonder 🤔 how many Allied Tank crews were knocked out by one of these beasties firing from such a distance that they had absolutely no idea that it was even there!
Heard a story about one knocking out (destroying would have been a much better description!) a T-34 which it hit so hard that it's turret flew up into the air and it's engine flew out of the rear of the vehicle as it literally blew apart at the seams!
A Soviet T-60 light Tank (20mm cannon armament!) bagged 2 Tigers by drawing them towards some 76.2 mm guns which promptly knocked them out! Both crewmen of the T-60 got medals for that.
We've all heard the legend of Michael Wittmann's Tiger 🐅 at Villers-Bocage which is just insane 😳.
The T34 exploding was not likely only due to the German round, but rather the result of catastrophic on-board ammo going off. These internal explosions were tremendously powerful.
Wittmann could have accomplished that feat using a Sherman or Cromwell. He caught that group completely by surprise and it was his boldness and excellent tactics that caused such a lopsided outcome. In fact, at those point blank ranges the 75mm Sherman gun firing HE might have been even more devastating. Faster rate of fire too!

That muzzle velocity was the real killer punch. The M4's 75mm was a fantastic weapon, but the rounds just didn't have this same ZING.

UK had the 3.7 inch AA Gun (92mm) their equivalent of 88mm, British Army used it as an AntiTank in Exercises in 1936 but the AA Regiments decided and were allowed they were exclusively AA and not used as Artillery or Anti Tank , this puzzled Rommel and Africa Korps as tye 88mm was essntial to their defensive successes, Von Luck one of Rommels Officers wrote only time he knew of when 3.7 inch was usdd against panzers was when Tobruk was captured, when Panzers drove down into the Port the AA Guns depressed their barrels and fired on ghem, they did not have Armour Piercing (they had in 1936) but their AA Shells did serious damage to the Panzers without destroying them; Von Luck was in command of only Panzer Regiment in Normandy on D Day , well worth reading his book especially his time as prisoner of Russians , very, very interesting . Another example of British Failure, British Tanks at beginning of WW2 were as good if not better than German but as the guns required got bigger the Brit Tanks were restricted in width to enable them to be transported by Rail, most obviously seen in Churchill Tank wh8ch if wider could have had a wider Turret Ring and mount a bigger gun (3,7 inch?) , it could have been s British Tiger , Germans had same problem but they removed tracks and outer wheels to transport Tigers and Panthers nd replaced them when they reached their destination

Great footage, but realize that these newsreel films were made without recording sound. The sound effects of the blasts were added in by the people putting the newsreels together for public showing.
