- Ioanna Merope Ippiotis was born on the Greek island of Lesvos and she moved to the UK when she was 12. Led by a great passion for languages, she completed a degree in Modern Languages (Italian
and Spanish) and a Master of Arts in Applied Translation Studies at the University of Manchester and the University of Leeds, respectively. After spending her Erasmus year in Perugia and Madrid she joined the Erasmus Committee for the British Council to promote European studies and working abroad. In 2010, she moved to Milan where she worked as a freelance translator and in-house assistant project manager, and later to Turin to work as a social media copywriter. Currently she works as a translator and editor for La Stampa's Vatican Insider website.

Fabio P I was around a lot of Italian-Americans my whole life (since I am one) and live in NYC where being Italian-American goes over fairly well. I get annoyed hearing about how great it is to be Italian, or of Italian descent, because I've heard it so much, and every culture has something to be proud of, so what's the big deal... but I've noticed that Italians living in the country have mixed emotions about their heritage. They seem to worry about being viewed as backward. For a small country, they've made a big impact, and obviously I feel a bit partial to the culture, but surely a balanced view is most prudent; there's no reason for excessive pride or shame. "Tutto il mondo è un paese" -- people are pretty much the same everywhere.
I love Italy and Italians and also your cultures etc....And there are always so many nice people in Italy.
@@bbblackwell Italian-Americans are different from Italians of Italy because you live in America not in Italy...And people have to be proud of who they are and where they come from...I am also proud of my own culture...I don't care what other people say and even if I have to hear it more and more often, I will still feel proud of it...I love Italy and Italians are really nice people...I am not saying we don't have nice people elsewhere except Italy but what I mean to say is that most of the Italians I have met are really amazing....They have a lot to share and they are really really kind...

Italy is feminine in Italian, and in the common imaginary, Italy is a lady. If you really want to make your point here, since it is a country maybe you should have mentioned that she should have used the pronoun "it". It would be just as strange if she was using singular to talk about the US being plural. Just MHO, I also was a bit confused and I feel she should refer to Italy with feminine pronouns.

Italy in italian is called Italia, which is also a female name used in the past centuries in the country. In the italian hymn, Italy is referred to as a woman, it's personified as a woman. In the paintings and propaganda drawings from the past and today political drawings and comics, Italy is always personified as a woman. So for the italian imaginary, Italy is a woman and using "she" would make sense as much as "it". "He" is the only pronoun that simply doesn't go with it.
Italy is a female! I know it and I'm really sure about it......... Italy is my mother.... and.... it may be strange for some of you, but each mother must be a female!!!

Will it be difficult? Maybe. But living with the endless feeling of not belonging is not easy either.

I literally loved that talk! There should be more people like you here in Italy! Everyone thinks Italy is in a deep crisis (well, that's actually true XD) and that there is no hope here. We live sorrounded by a bouble of depression and negative thoughts, and that's going to make our situation always worse. I don't think we don't have chances, work, future... I won't emigrate, I am going to graduate and work here. I will try to make our beatiful country better for everyone, 'cause Italy can be better that what we think. Italy IS better!

Mi scalda il cuore vedere una ragazza straniera parlare così bene del'Italia, MA, bisogna chiarire alcune cose.
Uno, Torino è une delle città "bene". Bisognerebbe scendere sotto Bologna e vedere se il discorso tiene. Un esempio è quello della bici: la ragazza dice che si può andare tranquillamente, perchè c'è bel tempo. Ma dove ci vai senza piste ciclabili decenti?Le recenti morti hanno confermato che andare in bici in Italia non è una grande idea.
Due, a livello di alloggio l'Italia è un disastro per i proprietari. Presumendo che lei sia in affitto (la cosa più probabile, perchè ha parlato di ricollocamento), non sperimenta le tasse assurde sulle case (a parte l'IMU (o qualsiasi tassa corrispondente, ho perso il conto), ci sono per esempio le tasse sui cancelli. Io per avere un cancello, per entrare a casa mia, devo pagare una tassa).
Stessa cosa per gli aiuti alle famiglia, o la sanità che funziona solo sulla carta (due cose che presumo, e spero per la seconda, lei non abbia avuto gran modo di sperimentare).
Potrei continuare ma credo che il punto sia chiaro.
Ora, la ragazza parla con cognizione di causa. Lavora in un giornale quindi (si presume) che conosca la situazione politica disastrosa che abbiamo, vive qui e non si limita al "l'Italia è bella perchè c'è la pizza". Mi piace come ragiona, ma dovrebbe rendersi conto che quando all'Italia ci sei legato, nel senso che per un motivo o per l'altro non hai la possibilità di "andartene, se le cose vanno male", la situazione diventa pesante. Vivere in Italia da studente o giovane lavoratore non è impossibile, anzi, ma quando cerchi di crearti una famiglia e di stabilirti per sempre qui, inizi a vedere l'altra faccia della medaglia.
Detto questo, ammiro la ragazza, perchè sembra una persona competente e perchè ci vuole coraggio a fare quello che fa. Ma diciamo che , nonostante mi abbia fatto sorridere, non è riuscita a reinstillare in me la fiducia in un Paese che sembra remare contro qualunque possibilità di cambiamento vero (e no cambiamento stile Referendum constituzionale).

Her accent sounds quite posh which leads me to believe she's privileged and that's why her experience has been so good. First of all the fact that she's an EU citizen affords her the opportunity to move to Italy. I'm not sure who her demographic here is supposed to be. Surely we can't all move to Italy and have a great life.

La verità è che noi italiani siamo indeboliti dagli stereotipi che circolano su di noi e che contribuiamo ad alimentare. Il Nord Italia oggi funziona in realtà anche meglio del Regno Unito e questa ragazza ha solo evitato di farsi sommergere dagli stereotipi anti italiani. Dobbiamo riflettere sul fatto che abbiano cercato di dissuaderla dal lavorare a Torino e non a Cosenza !
È devastante la disinformazione che gli anglofoni fanno circolare: l Italia è per esempio il 5 paese al mondo per surplus commerciale mentre gli inglesi non hanno nemmeno surplus ma debito commerciale ed il terzo in Europa per numero di brevetti presentati negli ultimi anni , ma non si sa perché quando pensano di noi questi tizi ci vedono come un luogo chiuso e anti economico . I love Italy but I could never fathom why rent and food was so costly when wages were a lower than UK, Germany ect. It seemed the Italians were getting screwed.

In spite of the posh accent, she said a bunch of true things and of course Italy can be an amazing country. However, the aspects that make us amazing still fall in in trite stereotypes: awesome food, cheap places (sure compared with the UK), free entertainment, art (what kind of art? and how is it preserved?), sea, eating together and so on. This is more or less how foreign countries see Italy. What about something else? What about jobs and meritocracy? Sure, they are both present, and of course some people get them without recommendations (those people usually have a pricy UK or USA degree), but I'm not sure that few examples can be indicative of a rule rather than an exception.

She doesn't seem to even grasp the concept of foreigner privilege (which may be sector-specific, but is most certainly there) and the fact that her own experiences are vaaaaastly different from those of an average Italian student. Also well done on her 3 generalised datapoints regarding meritocracy (that did not even come from Italians)? I think this girl needs to get more Italian friends who were not able to afford university, it can really become blinding to live in the post-academic social bubble.

Unfortunately, in a country with NO meritocracy and where nepotism rules, university is no longer a tool to find a good job (or any job), nor something that makes people 'respect' you. I am from 4 different countries, one of them being Italy, so I am able to make comparisons. Italian schools and uni used to be some of the best in Europe until the early seventies when you got 'mass schooling' and education started to be less and less demanding to 'adjust' to the intellectual needs of 'stupid', literally. It kept gettin worse and worse until, starting from the late 90s, practically everyone had a degree (and even a post graduated degree) which completely devalueted the rule of education. Companies which used to find their best workers directly in schools or uni (one upon a time, if you had a good high school diploma you could have a brilliant career without even going to university) stopped doing so and started hiring only friends of friends, people with recommendations from powerful people, children of current employees and so on. To this, add the fact that starting from '98 the labour market has been completely stripped of any protective rules for new workers, who now have no minimum wage, no maternity, no paid holidays nor anypaid sick days or pension, trasforming new generations into slaves working for almost very little money (and sometimes for no money at all, hoping to be hired after endless internships). They all do it and shut-up, since they are unable to organise in an organic protest and if they refuse, there's the queue to take their shitty job. Having multiple passports I understand that this sounds preposterous and surreal to a Northern European or an American, but that's the way it is. That's not the Twilight zone. It's reality in Italy, I consider myself blessed not to be part of it.

Turin is far from being good representation of Italy my dear, it's an island of happiness and success within the rest of the collapsing country, the crisis hit much less hard than elsewhere, and rent/cost of life has always been the cheapest among the industrialized areas of Italy. Comparing costs of living in Turin and Milan is like comparing Berlin to London. This video should be titled "life is too short to spend even just a minute in Italy, unless it's Turin"
(within context of the video) The U.K. sounds somewhat similar to the U.S.
A lot of this video resonates with me.
I was raised in an Italian immigrant community in New York City (my family is not of Italian immigrant descent) but by association (my family both parents and sister including myself worked for Italians), our family participated in a lot of the social cohesion that she mentioned in Italy such as having someone to call during a time of help, local mom and pop shops where you talk to the owners and values of the Italian immigrants helped our family live. The idea she mentioned having more to going out than the American standard of drinking culture and being present with those around us.
I was encouraged by the Italian elders in my community to see the world, study hard and pursue what motivates me.

Anche io ho lavoricchiato un po' come cameriera prendevo 3 euro all'ora a nero , lavori nella mia area giù a meno che tu non sia figlio di gente importante è difficile trovar qualcosa che paghi abbastanza da poter vivere decentemente, perciò adesso mi sono trasferita all'estero, stare fino ai 30 anni a dover chiedere soldi ai miei è qualcosa che non posso sopportare. L'espressione era ""esagerata"" ma era per dare un'idea forte.
Il discorso era un altro, per quanto le cose che dice la signora del video siano valide quando sei un ragazzo appena uscito dall'università che fa fatica a trovare tirocini che paghino 500 euro e ti trovi costretto a vivere con i tuoi fino ai 30 anni inoltrati il mare il sole e la pizza te li fai bellamente a brodo.

Purtroppo quello che sto per dire potrebbe non piacere. Nulla da dire o da sminuire per questa ragazza che "ce l'ha fatta". Ma essere nativi inglesi, per di piu' con accento Britannico ti garantira' sempre un lavoro, non solo in italia, ma ovunque.
