In an era where spin rates are only getting higher, it seems fitting that one of the more effective pitches is one that is purposely meant to spin less. The outcome is obvious: the knuckleball shall return.
I'm glad you covered the splitter's popularity in Japan and Korea because my biggest takeaway from watching the WBC was that it seemed like every pitcher on the Japanese national team had an absolutely filthy splitter.
When I first got into baseball about 10 years ago, I noticed I loved splitters, maybe because they were so rare, but also because they had such a unique motion. So glad you had a video covering this and breaking down the details of this great pitch!
Jack Morris, Roger Clemens, John Smoltz, David Cone and Randy Johnson all used it. That’s like 15,000 Ks. So I’ve always wondered why it died. I’m glad to see it come back.
It’s pitching, pitche types will come into vogue until the hitters adjust, at which point they’ll fade out again for a little while and become relevant a few years later.
Thank you for shouting out Fernando cruz. He had control issues last year but late in the season he dialed it in and was striking out everybody. And he’s even better now
I feel like Felix Bautistas splitter is insane. It may not have the same movement as other splitters but with his arm slot and matched up with his 4seam is just different than any other splitter
Given that the splitter by Gilbert only spun 4.5 times, are we going to be in a spot where we see 80+mph knuckleballs at some point? The splitter grip seems to be something that can lead to it.
Splitters with less than 1000rpm and with a large mph differential are most likely forkballs. Aroldis Chapman throws one, George Kirby throws one, there are several that still throw true forks, they're just usually called splitters.
Nah, it's closer to knuckle curve vs. curveball than anything else and sweeper isn't even a real pitch. Usually it's a slider, sometimes a curveball, either or those pitches weren't registered as "sweepers" until last year. Plus the concept is stupid. Sliders have slide implying sideways movement. If they wanted to differentiate sliders they could've added gyroball which is already used in japan for gyrospin sliders or maybe a name for sliders that go down. Sliders already slide, implying sideways movement so saying "sweeper" implying sweeping action is dumb especially since not all pitches called the same thing move the same so some sliders are more frisby, some more vertical but to use "sweeper" as a whole "new" pitch. It's ridiculous. Slurve is already a pitch name for a slider with more vertical drop anyways and it's registered by statcast but like forkball it's only listed as "slurve" if you tell them it's a slurve. Pitches have to do with pitch grips not movement anyways, plus sweeper just doesn't sound good.
One thing that I think get overlooked so much is the Visual spin from the hitters prospective. I throw a 4 seam fastball with 2100-2200rpm that typically get 18-20 inches of Ivb that grades out as pretty good pitch in isolation and a change up that spins about 1500 with 3-8 drop in the opposite direction that grades out pretty mediocre. But my change up is by far my biggest swing and miss pitch because I hold it with a 4 seam grip which makes it visually indistinguishable from a fastball and batters swing right over it
Kodai Senga's ghost forkball essentially operates like a slightly slower splitter with even more downward break which makes the pitch so effective. He's out now but when he comes back I'd like to see a video on the ghost fork and forkballs in general
A ball moving through the air creates lift. Normally, whichever way the ball is spinning on some axis is the direction the lift force is being "redistributed" to...for a fastball, it's spinning backward, which sends the lift force to the front of the ball and creates "rise." A slider spins in the direction of the pitcher's hand, so the force moves that way and the ball moves glove side. Curve is opposite the fastball. The splitter is thrown with the intent of spinning very little, so the lift force isn't redistributed...it presses up against the back of the ball, creating nosedive. But because it isn't thrown with the arm motion of a curve, it can be thrown harder, like a fastball. The knuckleball does the same thing but has the added bonus of having so little spin that the stitches can serve as rudders, moving the ball left and right.
This is crazy to me that you are talking about Kremer, and I'm watching this video today (4/20/24) instead of when it dropped, but all of this connected to the fact I live in KC MO and was at the game last night and Kremer was the starter for the O's and had a perfect game going into the 4th, until with 2 outs Vinnie popped a HR, whoops.
i predict the final pitch of the 2024 season, Game 6 of the World Series between the Braves and Orioles will be a Craig Kimbrel fastball at the top of the zone at 94mph, striking out Michael Harris swinging in the top of the 9th
As a SplitHead myself (thats what us true Splitter fans call ourselves) this rise in Splitter usage brings me great joy, im so glad that this unique and incredible pitch is finally getting the recognition it deserves
So it means as of 10/22/2024 that Yamamoto will either close the World Series with a splitter or a walk of will come from it. (I wrote that but don’t know if a Yankees’ pitcher throws one).
Wheeler actually originally added the splitter during his insane second half in 2018. Not sure why he dropped it after that since it seemed really effective.
It will be interesting to see if Ohtani brings his splitter back next season given this trend. It used to be his endgame pitch but he barely threw it last year.
If you were shown a pitch mix with velos movements arm slots and placements, how accurately would you be able to guess how good of a pitcher they were? Because I feel like when I see stuff like glasnow or strider, I wonder why their outcomes seem so bad relative to the perceived quality of their pitches.
LOL so this is why my page views spiked 4x the last few days
What can I say, I’m an influencer
I’ll tell ya the year of the splitter was 2018, when my wife left me!
why, i hardly know er!!
The day your life got better
Ba dum psss
And then she was splitting it for everyone else
Rodney Dangerfield lol
In an era where spin rates are only getting higher, it seems fitting that one of the more effective pitches is one that is purposely meant to spin less. The outcome is obvious: the knuckleball shall return.
We could use more knuckleballers. I miss the Tim Wakefields and RA Dickeys of the world.
Matt Waldron did well against the Dodgers the other day!
Knuckleballers also have way lower risk of arm injury

Rip Wake
The final form of baseball will be a game where every pitcher has had their UCL removed entirely and exclusively throws knuckleballs
The Mariners upload splitters into their starters heads like it’s the matrix I swear
The channel should be renamed Handsome Bailey to be much more accurate.
Quality upload on the main channel
I'm glad you covered the splitter's popularity in Japan and Korea because my biggest takeaway from watching the WBC was that it seemed like every pitcher on the Japanese national team had an absolutely filthy splitter.
Another day, another fantastic main channel video.

Good video main channel. Glad to see this content continue to flow through the season.
Monkey's Paw, the last pitch of 2024 will be a splitter but it will be hit for a walk off.
I'm a simple man. I see a main channel upload, and I click
It’s pitching, pitche types will come into vogue until the hitters adjust, at which point they’ll fade out again for a little while and become relevant a few years later.

If Kevin Gausman’s isn’t called Da Spwitter I will be very disappointed
I have been disappointed
My boy Kirky catching strays for the perfect fig. 1a of 'befuddled'
I love the bold prediction of final pitch WS being a splitter
I feel like Felix Bautistas splitter is insane. It may not have the same movement as other splitters but with his arm slot and matched up with his 4seam is just different than any other splitter
First for a main channel video? It's my lucky day!
Brillant video Mr Foolish!. Absolutely love these technical breakdowns like this. Makes me love the game even more.
Given that the splitter by Gilbert only spun 4.5 times, are we going to be in a spot where we see 80+mph knuckleballs at some point? The splitter grip seems to be something that can lead to it.
splitter was always one of my favorite pitches, glad to see the return

probably will get its own distinction like how Sweeper got separated from sliders last year.

Definitely a huge rise in splitters currently across mlb Bailey loved the breakdown
Love the main channel Content Bailey

aw yeah main channel back in action baby
It always makes my day when you make a video on your main channel
Outstanding video

So I'm gonna need Bailey to replace one of the talking heads at MLB Network.
SeatGeek isn't paying you enough, you Billy Mays'd us at the end
Thank you Silly Irish Cream. Very cool Silly Irish Cream.

Nothing foolish about Bailey. Great Vid man really enjoy your stuff !
I saw year of the splitter, and thought Cruz had to be mentioned. So happy I was right; he’s a great story too
Incredible breakdown Bailey!
Extrapolating this data, in a couple years there will be more splitters thrown than pitches thrown

Thanks for uploading on your main channel again
Batters facing Bruce Sutter: "The hell..?
Shoutout JJ Putz’s splitter. The only thing that rocked harder in 2007 was Putz’s walkout music (AC/DC’s Thunderstruck).
With all the arm injuries, we need more knuckleballers. Sometimes it's completely unhittable... other times it's BP!
I just know fernando cruz will be mentioned
Fernando Cruz getting some love finally
I started watching baseball around 2010 and I don't recall anyone throwing it in the years after that.
Not even a mention of Kodai Senga smh
i predict the final pitch of the 2024 season, Game 6 of the World Series between the Braves and Orioles will be a Craig Kimbrel fastball at the top of the zone at 94mph, striking out Michael Harris swinging in the top of the 9th
I wish I could let gang know I fw this
Last pitch of the year Logan Gilbert splitter CG World Series shut out 😤
As a SplitHead myself (thats what us true Splitter fans call ourselves) this rise in Splitter usage brings me great joy, im so glad that this unique and incredible pitch is finally getting the recognition it deserves
“Mr. Baseball” showed me the power of the great equalizer. It beat the stash off Tom Selleck to start, he came around.
Alejandro Kirk out here catching strays on a video about the Splitter
Being in this video is the most significant contribution dean kremer has given to the orioles in awhile
Bryce Miller added the Splitter in the offseason and it's immediately working great in tandem with the elite spin on his 4-seam
Foolish Bailey video featuring Dean Kremer? Love it!
Just won my first mlb the show World Series with my reds on a Fernando Cruz splitter! Then immediately saw this video haha
9:54, Hopefully, a splitter from Kirby Yates.
It will be interesting to see if Ohtani brings his splitter back next season given this trend. It used to be his endgame pitch but he barely threw it last year.
Life is okay if there foolish video uploaded
Main channel time!
Bruh I literally said this like 2 months ago!! Its HIM this year!!
Splitter saves your arm. Great pitch.
Splitter? I hardly know 'er!
Also, looking forward to the year of the eephus

Zach Wheeler has had a splitter. He might me using it more this season but it's been years that it's been in his back pocket.
UA-cam didnt notify me of this, even though i have the bell rung, this saddens me as yesterday wouldve been awesome with this video n
I knew this video was coming since opening day 😂
Shouldn’t even have to explain why an inch or 2 matters. Think we all know how much it matters 😂
That’s what she said. 😂
Plot twist: the last pitch of the 2024 season will be a splitter - that is hit out of the park for a walk-off home run 😄
Splitters are a super nasty pitch for viewers. You get some of the coolest swing and misses on those
They’ve got a lovely confluence of velocity and movement
When do I get to see MLB pitchers throwing the Split Ball from Backyard Baseball?
Haven’t seen the video yet but if Ezequiel Tovar isn’t mentioned, I’m gonna riot
I picked up the splitter my junior year of high school, it's honestly not particularly hard to learn.
Presumably the splitter is also less wear and tear than the constant breaking stuff.
Foolish stuff my friend
Splitter, why i reckon i hardly knew her!
Bailey confirmed Jeff Hoffman closing out the World Series
Nobody's talkin' about Jeremy Jeffress's devastating split change from like.. 2018-ish 😭
What's the difference between a splitter and a forkball like Senga throws? Or are those just two names for the same thing?
just started video, hoping for yuki matsui talk
I already throw a splitter. It’s alright for now, but I’m getting some bite to it
So far so true
1 inch is huge!!!!!
If Mark Leiter jr. isn’t mentioned in this video I will riot
Can't wait till Jeff Hoffman strikes out Anthony Santander on a splitter in Game 6 so I can come back to this video
Evidently Bailey was watching Casey Mize spin that ball
Many pitchers throw splitters but only one throws Da Spwitta
Split finger fastball is gripped with the fingers split. Ohhhh. Thought you crossed your fingers. 😉🤪
Just ask the ladies if an extra inch or two of movement will make a difference!
Never, ever let someone tell you that 1.5-2” doesn’t matter
man that splitter has less revolutions per minute than france
What's the difference between Senga's forkball and a splitter?
Short answer: how far it drops and number of times it spins. Hope that helps!
splitter!? i hardly even know her!
Keaton winn all day!
It's not RPMs, but rather RsPM...let's start a revolution
🚨🚨🚨 dean kremer mentioned 🚨🚨🚨
I was anticipating a video on Texans legend James Casey's minor league baseball career Bailey...
I'm disappointed
