  • We meet effects artist Jasper Anderson, aka Mr. Chicken's Prop Shop, who shares with us his take on an D-I-Y animatronic raven that he's designed and produces as a kit. We take a look under the feathers of his raven and see how its array of servos work together to bring this creature to life.
    Find this kit and Jasper's other projects here: www.chickenprops.com/

    Without exception Norman Chan asks the absolute best questions of his guests. I hear myself saying "Good question" constantly watching his videos. I can't think of anyone better on UA-cam (or television for that matter.) Thanks for the interesting video on what looks like a fantastic kit.

      Not only are they to the point, they are easy to understand for a person not versed in that specific tech field. His questions lead to answers at that same level. I'm no animatronics whiz, but I could understand about 95% of what they discussed on this!

    Considering how great it looks at the end, and the work that's gone into it, it's reasonably priced. Very impressive. Would look awesome sitting up high up on a bookcase.

    I don't understand why you guys removed the Auto generated closed captioning. As an hearing impaired person, I used to be able to enjoy your videos with them on, but now it seems you have removed them from all your videos except for those with added official CC's. The auto generated cc's are good enough to use while waiting for the official cc's to be uploaded for the video. If you guys don't add the auto cc's to your videos, I would have to unsubscribe as I can't enjoy the videos anymore without them.

      My hearing is perfectly fine but the way I learned English by reading subtitles and listening together so it is near and dear to my heart because it helped me and thinking about the content people with less or no hearing could enjoy with subtitles but there aren't any- it is very upsetting to me. It isint even a hard problem to solve! Now with the auto generated text and they could even pay someone to edit the text-

      Yes! Please add captioning back to your videos, many of your viewers require it and it's just irresponsible to remove it completely.

    Years ago I brought myself a kit version of the famous "bow shooting boy", an old Japanese animatronic of a boy who picks arrows from a quiver and shoots them at a target. If you've never heard of it you should really google it, it's completely brilliant. It operates on a single, wind-up drive shaft with a collection of cams, strings, springs and levers to control the movement. Putting it all together is utterly fascinating. I only wish there were more of these things out there.

    • @zakofrx

      Their is an ancient Japanese book created by a person who made the Japanese Animatronics(can't remember what they called them)
      The book has the design details for many of them..
      If you search for it their is a reprint available but it's not cheap.
      And I guess it would help if you could read traditional Japanese.

    Shout out to the animatronic raven with the glowing eyes in the coffin room of The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland/Walt Disney World circa 1969. This HAD to be inspired by it (and of course all the original Disney bird animatronics like the Parrot from Pirates and The Enchanted Tiki Room).

    The tail of an RC airplane also only uses two servos.
    The head isn't any different here, just on a central swivel instead of independent hinges.
    Curious if it keeps repeating the same movements, or is randomized. Will be looking into.

    I made something like this out of popsicle sticks, hot glue and paper mache and a cheap black boa from the halloween store back a few years ago. I then brought it as a prop for halloween for school on a blinds hanger turned into a staff. Needless to say, I won. (I'd also made another prior out of plastic bottles and black streamers that sat on my arm.)

    • @jeffreywarrenpark9149
      @jeffreywarrenpark9149 5 років тому +2

      Actually, YES you can, if you have an usb cable that fits, and the software, (it's free, btw). Overall, I would say this kit is HIGHLY customizable. If you feel ambitious, it shouldn't be hard at all to change out the servos, for smaller, faster, and stronger servos. It all depends on how far down the rabbit hole you wish to go...!

    • @jeffreywarrenpark9149
      @jeffreywarrenpark9149 5 років тому +2

      Oh, one more thing. How loud are the mechanics is entirely dependant on the specific servos you use. Some are much noisier than others. But, even with noisy servos, there are ways to make them run quieter, (i.e.: packing the gear-well with silicone grease).
