- Опубліковано 26 жов 2022
- What's the inside of a modern animatronic creature look like? Adam shares this animatronic crow from his collection of film props and takes it to the offices of Lumafield, the makers of a compact CT scanner. Adam's blown away by what's visible in the scan, which reveals the intricate mechanisms and materials used to make this robot without having to damage the prop!

It would be neat to see these on your VR app. Just discovered your VR app last night and I’m blown away. I was looking for pottery wheels for my wife online and I’ve settled on one. When was in your VR app I looked down at one of your shelves and saw the exact one I picked out. I’ve never seen you use it and didn’t even know you had one. So cool. I wish you could walk up closer to stuff without objects keeping pace. I want to study the “ pliers rack” more closely for example
The animatronics at Harry Potter world are interesting. I love the crow!!
Lolz I want to see Adam build a aviary and get finches and quail... I'd watch those videos!!!
Themed aviarys🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for visiting, Adam! It's always great to explore with you.
W Manners
And thanks for having him there, we really enjoy it when you do. This one amazed me even more than the calculators.
@@marvindebot3264 Thanks! Always glad to know Adam's community enjoys these.
With the popularity of slow-mo and whats inside videos, I think your marketing team would go nuts with just making a channel dedicated to looking inside user submissions of objects.
That was outstanding.
The best part of this video is Adam's delight at every new thing he is shown.
That's any video he's in though!
adams "child like" wonder is why hes oke of my favorite celebrities. hes not afraid to admit he didnt know something, and especially hes not afraid to show how fascinated he is with everything
He's such an inspiration, just by being himself and sharing his joy.
Wonderful video! We rescued an injured crow when I was in high school. When her wing healed, she refused to leave, adopting us. She learned to meow like our cat, and said a few other words. She’d make a wonderful purring sound when really happy, while puffing up all her feathers. (I say “her”, but we really had no idea!). An unexpected wonderful animal companion growing up!
That's so fucking adorable 😭 I had a similar rescue, but it was an abandoned pigeon 😅 His name was Kevin!
@@6ixpixl438 Kevin is a great name! My brother named the crow Lady- I don’t remember why! It was cool when Lady would fly around the yard and return to our head or shoulder!
As a zookeeper that is fortunate enough to have a focus on birds and currently cares for an African pied crow, I can confirm that being on good terms with a corvid is an amazing experience and they're my favorite family of birds to work with outside of raptors even if they can be brats when they want to be.
As childish and annoying as they can be, corvids and parrotids are amazing creatures. Their perception of the world, social natures and capacity for intelligence are all astounding in their own unique ways.
First, that bird is amazing. Best thing ever. Second, holy crap that scanner is unbelievable. I don't find many things to be that impressive but this is hands down one of the top contenders of all time.
Thank you! Glad you think it's as exciting as we do!
Thank you.
Back in grade school ( circa 64-65) there was a crow named Sam, that would come visit at lunch time, he'd land on the table and walk back and forth saying "pleaze" and if you gave him something he would say "grassis", obviously had been trained by someone. He also collected shiny junk and stashed it up on the roof, the janitor would go up there every couple of months and clear it up, most went into the lost and found.
The crow is great, I would love to see the doorbell. The CT scan is fascinating to see as well, what an incredibly powerful tool. More of this, please!
This is legit so cool- as an animator i’d totally want to use the scaner to scan frames of a stopmotion puppet, imagine the things u could do with it 😵
woah, you could even scan claymation and then keep the forms as digital references
I would love to see classic stop motion used as an element in a modern movie; I think the 'Jason and the Argonauts' style of monster movement is perfect for a magically animated golem or whatnot.
A similar tool in the medical field is the Pet Scanner. The subject is injected with irradiated glucose, voracious cancer cells gobble up the sugar quickest, then a CT scanner is used to see where the glucose ends up.
There's a really cool rotating scan image on the Pet Scan Wikipedia page.
In my case, it's a LOT less painful than a bone marrow biopsy to make sure that leukemia hasn't come back.
I've known about polymetrics/3D scanning for a while now but to see the process and how far it's come has been delightful to watch.
I LOVE lumafield scans. If i ever hit the lottery im getting one of those machines for my garage
Haha, Lumafield's team definitely gave you the "full treatment" with that 3d model cleanup and print. Nice!
So cool to see CT being used for things other than the medical field! I briefly went to school for radiologic technology. It didn't end up being for me, but CT (computed tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) were two of my favorite imaging modalities. Mostly because they involved technology so heavily and were able to produce images of the inside of objects or people with such detail.
@Apoapsis , I used to service those CT scanners as a field engineer for a major healthcare company. I can tell you, it's the advances in the digital detector technology that's making this type of imaging take off like a rocket. Combined with huge advances in parallel computing, it's pretty amazing the resolution you can get now. I've seen radiologists minds blown when they see an X-Ray that shows bone striations so fine, they look like wood grain.
Feel old yet?
@@thereare4lights137 I was lucky enough to go to RSNA (the medical imaging conference in chicago if you don't know) in 2013. It was quite cool to see a lot of the then new imaging technology on display at Mccormick Place in Chicago.
This was incredibly cool to see, thanks for showing it off! I'm just imagining all of cool movie prop secrets that could be uncovered using this!
Pretty slick ad/collab. Love it!
I didn't actually know when I clicked this if the title meant crow the animal, or Crow the robot. I knew I'd be happy either way because I love both. It's so cool to see all the inner workings!
That's amazing! The fact that they can scan and print with such accuracy now, makes me wonder how long it will be before they can scan and then print in different mediums concurrently so you end up with a working replica out of the printer.
They are already doing it!! =D It's still just in its infancy, but printing with several materials at the same time is already a thing!!! =D
This was amazing! Watching the crow dissolve into the recognizable internals of a servo reminded me of the scenes in The Three Body Problem when people could peer inside an object in 4d space.
What a perfect collaboration. This is so very cool
I knew birds weren't real
If you can make a bird like this with a vfx budget, if you had a defence contract budget think what more you could do!
you had me at "part of a doorbell" up until that point I was like "oh, that's neat... not sure if I'd want a Corvid for a bff but that's a nice idea."
2:32 is actually art. The print of that would be sick.
Lovely birb. The CT thing impresses me every time
Amazing 😯 My jaw would hit the floor if there wasn't a table in the way.
seeing the solderblobs and the traces is insane
My grandparents had a Swiss music box in the form of a cage with two automaton birds who would chirp song and conversation while swiveling, bobbing and flapping their wings. It was an utter miracle to me as a a child, but even moreso as I try to figure out now how it operated. As soon as your corvid moved its head, I got a rush of that feeling... knowing that this is not real, but the artistry of it makes me overlook that. Can't wait to see where this goes
This was facinating. You always bring us the best stuff!!!!
The rendering of that crow is amazing 👍
Amazing piece
Fascinating video! Thanks for the share.
ALL of this is so cool!
That animatronic crow is so well designed!
That Alien X-Ray, ultrasound machine is SWEET! LOL
I've been trying to build an animatronic bird for the longest time on my backburner of projects and I've had a ton of trouble visualizing what the servo layout should look like, this is sooo helpful thanks so much!
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing
The cross fade to the two scans of the bird superimposed over the two amateur birders did not go unnoticed, Mr or Miss editor!
Hi Adam!... I have to say, this has probably been my favorite video thus far... Fun share along with amazing tech. I was in awe and only imagine it's a fraction of what you got to experience. Thanks!
That is so cool!
I have never seen something in you collection that I need. But the crow/raven is a must.
Great video! Right up my alley
So insanely cool.
They're both so soothing. Ha! What a fantastic discussion
Wow Amazing
Thanks again adam sir.
Wow! That scanner is such a handy thing.
That was so cool! Personally, I would have been geeking out that Adam Savage was there, geeking out over something.
That was fantastic. Thanks.
Hey Adam, the next time you're in New Zealand visiting Weta Workshops in Wellington make sure you visit Zealandia (also in Wellington) as I think you'll really enjoy all the birds that they have at their wildlife sanctuary. New Zealand has some beautiful, rare and unique birds that aren't found anywhere else in the world. If you ever get the chance to meet Sirocco the kakapo you'll be in for a treat as he is pretty famous worldwide after the BBC tv show "The last chance to see" with Stephan Fry made him world famous.
I really do feel like a man like Adam Savage could buy a FEW Corvettes. Always being humble...
Brilliance just Brilliance so much detail.
as somebody who is newly obsessed with the Disney Encanted Tiki Bar I think you should definitely do a build project on animated birds and tikis. I think it would be right up your world. love your channel
I loved that. thank you.
This scanner is a WOW-moment!
I reckon setting up motion sensors and having him/her just react at random as people enter/move about the cave would be pretty cool, especially if you added some sound to it.
This would be so cool for museums!
That x-ray shot of the crow at 3:00 would be perfect as an album cover.
I've been roleplaying a Tengu rogue named Jeremy DeLuise Brisby who is based on Jeremy the crow from The Secret Of NIMH. Hearing you say you're particularly fond of corvids made my day.
This technology is so cool!
I love crows so much dude
Such an amazing tool. I only wish there was some day where I really had access to one as hobbyist.
Cool to see Adam so happy about this tech again, he's lost none of the wonder he had from the trip in with his calculators.
Glad I’m not the only one with that bucket list item. I grew up around parrots, and birds are just the best.
Holly crow that’s amazing so much potential 🎃Hope you have a happy Halloween 👻. Thanks for the wonderful ideas your inspiring for other film artists for solutions to prop problems. God bless you
Surpassingly cool.
No soldiers, spies or even firemen.
You are my fucking hero. Your job is incredible.
Part of a doorbell.. yes! I like the way your thinking that would be awesome.
* OMG ~ You are not the only one Mind Blown.. Thank you for sharing..
Just another enthusiastic video now I’m going to watch “the raven”
Great video Adam, I cant wait to see more on your Crow build. I just came across this cause im looking for info on animatronics due to just buying a Wowwee Chimp head
Love you Adam! Always enjoy every vid.
that was fun !
Very cool. 😎
As Adam said (more than once) WOW! The applications for this level of technology are mind blowing (I think he said that as well)!
What a magnificent video of two very different and amazing pieces of technology. This was waaaay cooler than the 90% of shit that's uploaded to youtube.
@7:19 when they are talking about the screws it may that the screws had rolled threads vs. cut threads?
We watched an attempted murder turn into an actual (printed) murder (of crows).
Super cool technology.
Government finally gave Adam the go ahead to tell us how they make their bird drones
This is so fkn awesome, I'd love to see how much detail they can print out of those scans... Like would they be able to make the gears and the levers that you would need to replace something that's broken on your item.
This is an excellent prop! I am in the process of working on 3 animatronic tiki room birds for my sisters graduation party!
More scan collabs! This was incredible
You got it!
That was very interesting
My best friends kid is named Corvus. Love this
Putting an old payphone next to the door with the crow standing on top of it would make for a fun doorbell...
...or putting the bird above the door and replace the regular doorbell chime with a prerecorded 'nevermore'
Imagine if these scans could be done in a minute or two, and the equipment was cheap. A repair shop could start by scanning the item and inspecting it from the inside out to quote for the repair without ever taking it apart. For example, trying to refurbish an old vintage tape deck that doesn't work. You could scan it and see that the belt snapped, or a gear fell off the shaft, or a wire is broken, etc. If you have a laptop with a flakey or failed screen, you could scan it and see if the flex circuit at the hinge is broken or loose, or if a capacitor or battery is swollen, or if there are other types of component damage. Very cool !!
Taking it further even, automobiles. A dystopian world where your ball joints aren't to spec anymore and the machine determined your car's suspension sits wrong and you'd don't pass inspection. Or, a bit less grim, space! Rockets would be checked for irregularities before reuse. Would save lives, money and repair/replacement time.
If this got to the level where we could see ribbon cables and their continuity, oh my, now that would be something!
Insane resolution!
*i'm sure i'm not the only one who would want to see this done with his Boston Dynamics robot dog loan...but i'm also sure that BD would frown on such a thing but the geeky part of me would still want to see it regardless*
Wow, what a wonderful video! My faith in humanity restored
This tech is amazing. I'm stunned. Glad I got to see this.
Screws are now generally made by "roll forming" deformation, rather than cutting, due to manufacturer tooling lasting much longer, resulting in the higher core density of the screws you see here!
Makes sense too as to why the heads "seem" to shear off since it's the interface between the high and low density. Really cool to see it in color!
I am from Alaska, and I taught myself to caw like a raven, I tried cawing at a couple of ravens and the female, which I named Beakie, and now, 2 years or so later she still comes (most of the time) when I call for her, been tryin to get a video but she seems to know somethings up, lol. But, she will fly over, look down at me then she will tuck her wings and do a barrel roll and fly off, it's so cool.
I actually found out later that my family we're raven keepers in the 13th century and we have ravens on our family crest.
I think calling it a corvid is most accurate because it's the size and build of a crow, but has the heavier, more substantial bill of a raven. Perhaps it's just a particularly lean raven?
I love it!
There should be one of these scanners inside every museum in the world.
Very cool
Oh this is great. I can't wait for a build on this bird door bell
I've worked with RC servos for 50 years and this is not an optical encoder but just a carbon potentiometer. You can see the triangular(ish) sweep arm that drags a copper pad across a circular carbon resistor. An optical encoder would be better because the carbon resistor wears and occasionally needs to be cleaned of residue but too expensive for anything but very high end servos that can't fail due to wear (like the ones you pay hundreds of dollars for and are used in the most expensive large scale models).
Love it, wanna make animatronic birds for our lovely small national park here in Thailand to act as a 'enviromental awareness' informative attraction as we have so many birds, bee, monkeys, and trees that need a secure place in our world. Katelyn and you, Adam are invited here to spot the most amazing birds and inspire us all 😉🙏
The doorbell will be fun when you get round to it. A raven model would be good as the common raven stands approx. 25 inches high, that's roughly up to your knee. The larger size might make it easier to work out where things go before you animate the smaller model.
Hi Adam, love the video but I have to ask where you got the watchband for the Ultra :)
Impressive
Halloween is in 70 days and my daughter decided to be Maleficent. This looks like a great base design to start with for the crow on top of her staff.
This makes me want to move forward with my model of Bloodwing from Borderlands. So damn neat.
