"Be quiet" Yaps away. Catches fish. Don't let people tell you fish are spooked by sound. I've caught fish under my splashing feet blasting heavy metal. "Being quiet" was just something your grandparents told you to keep you still and silent. Have fun, fish are dumb.
If the conditions are right and the fish aren’t spooky, then no, it’s not that big of a deal. Obviously a 24” snake pike is not the smartest fish in the world either. That said, until you’ve watched every fish on your underwater camera completely scatter every time someone walks by your shelter, or seen schools of crappies literally move 40’ away on livescope every time someone walks over the top of them, or set up a shelter right where you found a pile of fish only to have them vanish by the time you get your shack up, or seen a tip up spinning until someone drives their wheeler past you 30’ away and the fish drops it immediately, maybe you won’t believe that it matters.
Good tips! True, being quiet helps get more bites! Sound travels quicker under water. Same advice being in a boat. The less noise you make on top the better for the fish below!
Yes. Lots of different opinions on this as you can see in the comments but better safe than sorry in my opinion. No, noise doesn’t ALWAYS spook fish but it definitely does at times.
Really like how you pointed the mistake of freezing the fish outside the hut. I see that so much and it drives me nuts. Plus who wants to have to thaw out a fish once they get home before filleting?
On Willamette River we used leader with trible hook on end an 2 slider single hooks above en end trible hook. We slide bottom trible hook above his tail. Then a single in mid-section then top single slider hook right behind gills. The we would gently pull slack from 2 single hooks until bend in fish, creating a twisting motion while in water. Too fast twisting in water, remove some twist. Too slow, add some curve too bait fish. Until you're satisfied with movment, then put half hitch in leader around fish nose. Now catch the big Chinook salmon in Willamette River!
I’m typically getting a game plan together the day before. Usually a plan A and B, sometimes a C. I’ll have all my maps figured out the day before and know exactly where I’m going. Once I get on the ice, I start drilling holes and fine tuning my location with underwater information such as my livescope, Vexilar and underwater camera. Once I start fishing I asses the bite and either stay or move on.
@2:44 i can imagine a homemade one.. good tip dude I already have a plan👍 But also @2:54, you just caught a mid day fish while speaking, sitting on a plastic bucket that is working like vibrating speakerphone on clear ice.It would be completely different if it were people standing on snow snd bubble ice right? On clear ice and hard surfaces your actually extending the vibrations reasonance. Previously you were talking about how the fish-camera can pic up people talking. With your equipment do you ever just go and test your hypothesis or like..try to record any evidence for this stuff? It would be interesting to experiment. Because honestly...I think some vibrations, even in winter, may actually arouse fish. Its not unlike like with open water... some things help or hurt sometimes. Just kinda ambiguous ya know. But obviously making all kinds of unnatural noises is gonna be... unnatural. Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you point out. It would be hard to disagree. @6:15 I often will just bring multiple ice fishing poles set up with the various lures I intend to try for the day so that I don't have to waste my time switching gear. Ice fishing pole set ups are so small and compact so it's easy to haul out 4 different set ups and a cpl tip ups. Thats my til I guess lol
The main evidence I have is that I’ve watched fish scatter on the underwater camera every time someone walked by, I’ve seen schools of crappies on livescope literally move 50’ away every time a hole is drilled, and I’ve set up on numbers of fish with a shack so many times and by the time the shack is up, the fish are all gone from all the racket. Now, that said, there are certain places and environments where the fish don’t seem to spook at all. I think larger predators like pike and lake trout are more likely not to spook from noise than panfish, bass or walleye. Now that said, a 24” pike in 15’ of water like the one I caught is not likely to spook from just my voice, but if I ran over the top of that fish with ice cleats on clear ice in 8’ of water I guarantee it would spook.
Thanks for the tips, this is the first winter I'm going to give Ice fishing a try and other than having some vertical jigs I'm going in as a novice, so your tips really help. Thanks Subbed for more
@@johngardner3441 It hasn't even froze over and I'm looking at shelters. LOL What's your thoughts on the amazon poly augers that you can use with a battery operated drill???
Thank you for the tips. I'm newer to ice fishing. My boys are always running around and sliding on the ice. Probably why I don't catch much. LoL What lake around Spooner do you catch eyes?!
You bet! Yes, that can definitely spook fish, especially on clear ice with no snow. There a lots of walleye lakes in the Hayward area and most of the bigger lakes in the spooner area have walleyes as well
Wow, we learned accidently many years ago when fishing is slow we crank up our atvs and snowmobile to ride around our tipup. Getting closer and closer. Northern bite every time! Northern bite on fresh drilled holes!
I definitely believe that pike can be pushed into the tip ups with vehicles. I’ve also seen times where a tip up has sat for a long time without a bite and pops just as you walk up to it. I think the pike hear you coming and grab the meal and run.
@@himie236 I fished enough to know that is not actually true. Sometimes active feeding fish do bite immediately. Location and presentation are more of a factor . Your driving atvs and snowmobiles are more often a hindrance then a benefit. Plus an annoyance . Northern are more of an aggressive fish than other species.
@@calebwistad or they had the bait swallowed for a time and started running with line when you walked up to tip up. Depending on depth of water, clarity of ice, and thickness of ice can make a difference . Walking alone is not as a noise factor depending on above conditions.
I have many times caught Pike right after a snowmobile or four-wheeler went down the shoreline. I think it drives the fish to your flag. I call out," round em up" as they drive by now!
My point was more along the lines of not getting stuck in a rut on one bait. You may be catching a few but there could be one that’s much better and you’ll never know if you never change. And yes, in some rare cases fish can be curious enough to move towards sound on the ice, if it does happen it’s typically larger predator fish at the top of the food chain like big pike or lake trout that don’t have any natural predators.
I hear that. I'm 65, been fishing 67 yrs. I guess you could say many of us were born to fish well before we are born. At least a couple of yrs before we are born. 🤫
I think the reason you're getting so much hate is 1) Title of your video. You are probably directly talking to a 90% male audience. They dont want to be told they need to STOP doing something NOW especially if they have been fishing for a long time. There are so many variables when fishing in general. There will always be someone that has a contradiction to any advice. My advice to you would be think about your audience and choose your title wisely. Unless thats what you were going for was conflicts to increase views. Then your strategy worked 😂
Haha. Good observation. Here’s the thing about UA-cam…titles and thumbnails are a huge part of a video’s success. This thumbnail and title were chosen very intentionally to get views. Now along with that, sometimes you step on people’s toes and that just goes with the territory. I have some incredible videos on UA-cam that never had compelling titles or thumbnails that just never got watched. That said, most of the people who are getting upset about this one are probably making some of these very mistakes and are trying to justify themselves. 😆
When fish are biting well, they don’t care much about noise or the “perfect “ lure and going out with a BIG plan in place, 😂. Not rocket science by any means (newbies may not know this) Keep fishing for those $kickbacks from product endorsements that you make. Blow on
Sure. On the perfect day when the fish are fired up and everything is going well, a lot of this doesn’t matter nearly as much, however, most days are not that day. When the fishing is tough and the fish are spooky, then the little details really stack up. By the way, I still fish for enjoyment just like I always have. I happen to also make videos for fun and fortunately have gotten good enough at it to make a decent income from them by promoting products I already like and use. Maybe promotion isn’t your thing, that’s fine. I personally happen to love helping brands sell their products.
Fish can both hear with internal ears and sense vibration through their lateral line. I’ve seen schools of crappies on livescope scatter in 40 feet of water just from the sound of boots walking above them on the ice.

Small pike can make some impressive runs. They fight much harder than a similar sized walleye. With 6lb leader they are definitely going to pull drag. I invite you to lock your drag down with 6lb leader on a pike that size and let me know how it goes for you. 😂

@@skinny.chicken Fair enough, although clearly my point here was simply that it is a mistake to be careless about knots, leaders, drag, equipment etc. no matter what method you choose to use. For instance, I would bet that if you are consistently landing big fish on 4lb test with no drag that you are pretty particular about your knot strength, using good line and making sure you don't have any frays, which just proves my point even further: good gear that's in top shape = more fish.
