Puppy!!!! 🐶 Such a cutie!!! This episode was excellent. All of your recommendations are very doable and make complete sense. That being said, this American is thinking of all of you over the pond and really people all over the world and truly praying for a mild winter, overall better growing conditions for food crops and peace in these times. Please be safe and if there's anything you think of that people could do here for others anywhere, please do not hesitate to make them known... Love the joy you bring to so many of us! Thank you 😊
Awwww thank you so much I do think this is going to be a tough winter for so many and as you say, I really do hope that everyone is safe and warm this winter. Thank you for the lovely kind words for Duke 💚🐶
Great advice Memo, I think we all dread winter for our houseplants and this winter is definitely going to more of a challenge. I have the added challenge of moving house within the next month and 70% of my houseplants are tropicals, so to say I'm dreading is is an understatement. Some things I do in the winter for my plants is to put the more delicate ones into prop boxes, which are just the clear plastic storage containers, use shelving that has zip-closure covers, use old socks to cover pots (especially ones in terracotta and ones on the windowsills), football socks are fab as you can get lots of pot covers out of those, change all my household bulbs for daylight bulbs that have high Lumens and Kelvin, and finally I remove soil from plants potted in soil to just enough to cover the roots and top up with moss as this helps with reducing the chances of overwatering. I only give my high light plants and baby plants full spectrum growlights to keep costs down through the winter. Duke is adorable and has a face to melt hearts, lol. Have a good weekend everyone.
Hey Carey, those are some awesome tips from yourself too!!! i would have never of thought of socks!!! genius!! Awww thank you he is a little rascal whilst he is young but i think he is settling in nicely.
Duke is adorable ❤. I’m a new plant parent thank you so much for the information I’m worrying like mad at the moment for my babies wondering how I’m going to keep them alive over the next few months.
Ohhhh thanks 😊 he is super cute, but I might be biased 😅😅😅 Ohhh I really hope they help. Don't stress the small things in the winter, some leaves might yellow, a plant might die back a bit, it's normal, most of us go through it every winter, then loads of growth in spring again, so truly gives you something to look forward to
I really appreciate that you consider people like me who are just plant enthusiast, and have zero interest in seeing peoples pets or other personal things in their lives, and separate that by putting it at the very end. However, I would suggest that you make separate videos for pets and other things that are outside the topic of plants, as I think it might hurt your plant vids because UA-cam's algorithm punishes reviewers when viewers click off vids before the very end. Just food for thought. Cheers!
Awesome care tips one of the better house plant winter tips I’ve seen and awe Duke is just handsome he looks like he will make the perfect plant buddy 💯💚🪴🐾
I use rain water. In the winter I save 1.5ltr plastic bottles and store rain water in them, in my plant room until I need it. Warms it up enough to not shock the plant.
Hi Memo, congratulations on Duke, it's a sweetheart! I am a fan of your channel and would like to thank you especially for the subject of this video. I also have a tip for you. In my greenhouse I have placed a barrel that I refill with rainwater (obvious). As soon as the sun shines, this water is heated. The rain barrel is dark colored so that it absorbs heat well. I use this preheated rainwater for all my plants. As protection against mosquito bites, especially myself, I add environmentally friendly anti-mosquito tablets to the water. In addition, the rain barrel has a nice advantage; it also gives off heat at night, which ensures that it does not cool down so much in the greenhouse. As isolation I also use horticulture bubble wrap. And against summer overheating I use self-opening windows and shadecloth....
Awww thank you Eugenie 💚🐶 So glad you are enjoying the channel 😊😊😊😊 Yesssss Good comments, I forgot to mention the dark barrel I use the same thing in my greenhouse for exactly those reasons and it really does help a lot. thanks for sharing.
Thanks Memo, this will be my 2nd winter growing indoors and I'm still learning. I'm like a newbie parent. Last winter I bought grow lights, heat mats, humidifiers... the massive gear list goes on 😂. Who needs Christmas lights when you even have mirrors and grow lights on the windows? 😅
Amazing video! 🙏 I'm so glad you talked about mold. It's quite obvious when you think about it, but I feel like most of us overlook it because we're worried about everything else. I wish I'd found your channel sooner!
This video was right on time! I'm moving from sunny Florida alllll the way up north to freezing Connecticut! I'm so glad you mentioned the wet soil causing cold damage because I planned to water right before packing them in the uhaul 😅 Thanks Memo! 🌿❤️
Useful tips, thanks. Planta app is good too, varies notifications for watering based on time of year and location of particular plant. Still check with moisture meter as sometimes overestimates when it's needed. Also prompts a picture to be taken every month so you can scroll back and see the growth over the year. With regards to grow lights, I bought a fair few grow light strips for 15 pounds and work well. But also realised that standard LEDs I've already got are just as good as growlights. Directed 2 of my Philips Hue GU10 spotlight bulbs at my Pachira Aquatic tree for 8 hours a day on a schedule and it's been putting out lots of new growth since. Just set a relevant Kelvin rating for daylight like 4500 in the app.
This video...well all your videos honestly, was brilliant! You're always so informative & thorough. Thanks for not just showing your beautiful plants without teaching us how you made it so. I REALLY love the series where you talk about the plants 1-3+ years later too, super helpful. I re-listen to your past videos like a podcast while I'm doing my plant chores 😊 All the way from California, you are one of my top fave planty people. Sorry for your loss of Lola & I am gushing over Duke, enjoy!
I got on UA-cam looking for exactly this and here you are! You've done it again Memo, lol. Hurricane Ian just hit here in the south so had to bring the plants in early. Can't wait to see what tips you have to share 😊
Awww I glad that the timing was perfect 💚🌿 I saw the devastation that Hurricane Ian brought, I really hope you are safe and there was not too much damage where you were based 🤞🙏
Great, comprehensive tips video! I actually move my plants slightly away from the windows because of the very cold temps and poorly insulated windows 😔 I use heat mats in my greenhouse cabinets(especially in my propping greenhouse tent)during cold months, along with grow lights, and fertilize weakly because I'm mimicking warmer season.
Hey Memo 😊 I wanted to thank you for the recommendation of the Govee wireless hygrometer/thermometer! It has been monumental in getting happy plants with maximum growth. It measures and tracks my different plant environments and alerts me when something is off. Particularly VPD (vapor pressure deficit). It has such a huge effect on plants and almost no one in the plant community talks about this! Cannabis growers have it down though, lol. I don't remember in what video you talked about it, but my plants and I thank you! Be well 😊
It was this video you talked about Govee 🙄😆 Definitely look up VPD (Vapor pressure deficit) if you're not already aware. And especially if you enjoy the science of plants 😊 It will make Govee even more of a "Godsend", lol. Thanks again!
Thanks Memo for all the tips, always very thorough and informative. Stay safe and warm! it saddens me to think all that's affecting everyone around the world and in Europe because of something as sad as war.
Hello there! Thank you for such an educational channel! I have a question about grow lights/dormancy: I added about 25 additional plants to my collection this summer. I am very confused about grow lights as they are the big buzz these days. My question is, as long as I keep my plants warm and maximize as much natural sunlight as possible, is it a bad thing if plants go into dormancy over the winter? I don’t want the stress of worrying about grow lights. Thanks for considering my question.🪴😊
Some great tips and all but oh my the puppy. Give him all the kisses from me hehe he is so cute and also sorry for your loss. Pet loss is way harder than most people realise Have fun
Thank you so much for this video❤, you always make sure that a new plant parent like me will be able to gain some knowledge thru your experiences and to learn what i might be able to do.😇. I do love your cute little fur friend too! i would like to see him in your next vids and on insta 😇
Awwww so glad you are enjoying the content 💚🌿 I am hoping to start a new series for new plant parents soon, so hopefully that will help too. So glad Duke is getting all the love! yes I am sure he will be making more appearances soon.
Hi Memo! A very sweet puppy! 🤩🐕 You didn't mention the mold on top of the growing medium. Last winter I got white mold on the top of the Leca. I transplanted all the plants into the Pon and it's here again 😭 I don't know if it's the humidity and the lower temperature issue? We have higher humidity in winter than in summer. Thank you for your answer 🌿🙏💚
first thing, sorry for my english. about heat: it's always good to insulate your house, but for plants you keep in rooms where you live, they should'nt sufer from cold, most of them can stand temperatures than a modern human being would feel absolutly freesing indoor. about heat: obviously our plants will have much less light but as the sun stay lower in the sky in winter, the sun rays can come deeper in the house through a window. staying in a place where it had indirect sunlight in sumer a plant my suffer sunburns in winter, i experienced it, i live in southern france where we often have very suny winter days.
here in brittany (france) we use wood stove or pellet stove, it's really inexpensive, we can use the dead trees or the garden/neighbourhood... the only trouble is that we hardly go under 25 degres in the house 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah I have a wood stove too and this year I am sure I will be using it a lot for sure. But same reason as you I haven't used it so much in the past as it keeps the space so so so hot.
I think to a certain point yes, but not sure if it has all the main nutrients in enough quantity, but I am not a fertiliser expert. Possibly a good one for just the winter and supplement it in the summer 😊💚🌿
I live in a flat and like many people will try and avoid putting the heating in. Throughout my flat it is underfloor heating and there isn’t any radiators. If I have the heating on will it be more damaging for the plants? As mine are on the floor in my apartment
Awwww good question, I would say there might be some risk as essentially the floor (where the plants are sitting on will act as a sort of heat mat, I did a video on my channel a few months back on heat mats, that might help you with this question if you want to check it out 👀
My prayer was flourishing in summer winter came and all the leaves went yellow the watering was reduced prior and my perperomia all the leaves dropped and shrunk and stem I left it next to the window in the sun thinking it may improved it liked it for a while and at night I kept away from it and died considering the water was reduced what happened ??
Was the temperature high enough? Or was the air really dry from the heating? Those 2 things would have been my guess. I will say out of all the plants I find peperomia one of the most challenging to keep happy in the winter
Plastic isn't innately bad. Yes! single use plastics are very bad. However if you use that horticultural bubble wrap for many years you will most likely be at a net zero as far as most environmentalists are concerned.
@@Houseplantygoodness I should also add that we the human race need to recycle as much plastic items as possible or expedite the research in plastic eating mushrooms and bacteria like Pestalotiopsis microspore and Ideonella Sakaiensis respectively.
