We don't get a "real winter" here in Arizona but thanks anyways. My Monstera Deliciosa's have new growth right now!

Sharon Holmes, I'm familiar with Arizona weather, and it's one of the best for winter growth, for sure. A lot of it has to do with still having pretty good light and milder temperatures! That's great about your Monstera!

What if you have RO water and that’s all you use to water your plants would that be warm enough to use to water if it has set out at room temperature in a gallon jug? Also do I need to use fertilizer since I use only RO water or does that not matter With fertilizing?

Jessica Depew, Good questions. It depends on the temperature of your home. If it is high 60s/70s, then it will be okay to use it. Sometimes putting the water in a sunny window will help heat the water up a bit more, too. With particularly sensitive plants--especially small ones--I will heat the water briefly in the microwave to make it a little warmer. As for fertilizing, you make a good point, as RO does take out minerals. You want to use fertilizer on your houseplants, no matter what type of water you use, as all plants will use up nutrients in their soil at some point. But with RO watering, it is even more important. However, you generally want to wait until late winter to begin fertilizing and do so until mid fall.

@@HealthyHouseplants ok so it won’t hurt not to fertilize anything from fall till late winter? And my grow room stays between 65-70 mainly 70 this time of the year I have to keep a small heater in that room due to the temperature dropping way too low In the winter for my plants to survive, I also keep a humidifier in there as well I keep it at about 60% humidity. I have been giving all of my plants the room temperature water but to me it still feels too cold so I will start warming it up before I water except for my violets that are wick watered. Thanks for the advice I have been so unsure what to do about fertilizing in the winter with RO water, I was afraid where the plants were not getting any minerals at all that they would need some kind of fertilizer, so I have been giving very small amounts here and there to keep from getting any deficiency’s.

@@jessicadepew9112 Winter doesn't last that long, so it will be fine not to fertilize during that time and resume in early spring. Keep in mind that fertilizer must be converted to useable nutrients within the soil, and that takes work for the plant. In the winter months with the colder soil and slower growth, the plant will take much longer to perform that process. In the meantime, the fertilizer just sits there, and it can sometimes not be good for the roots. I agree that room temp water often still feels too cold, which is why I heat those plants that I water with RO water, so I think it's a good idea for you to do that when you feel it's warranted. That is great you are heating the space and humidifying. I'm sure your plants are really liking that!

@@HealthyHouseplants yes they like it I have to or they would die it’s the only room In my house I can keep my cats out of they like to munch on my plants lol. I have African violets that I wick water and I was told to use the fertilizer mix at all times even In the winter is that true or should those not be getting any fertilizer either? I use a very small dose of it in my wick water but if I should be cutting it out completely then I will do that. Thanks for all the helpful advice there is so much misinformation out there that it’s hard to know what to believe and do especially for a beginner like me so it’s nice to have a reliable source of good information.

@@jessicadepew9112, You're very welcome. I'm glad I can help. Some cats do like to munch on houseplants! I bet the room is really nice! You were told correctly on fertilizing African violets throughout the year, and to only add a small amount when wick watering. I actually released a video this week on the topic that you might want to check out. It talks about mini African violets, but applies to standards, too: ua-cam.com/video/jR0dcVxLIro/v-deo.html
