Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Diagnosing Injector Knock

- Process of diagnosing injector knock on my 7.3 Powerstroke. I tried the method of hot retorquing the injector hold down bolts and doing that seemed to help with the noise I've been hearing.

After watching your videos and actually learning more about my 7.3, I've done all my own work. From simple AIH delete to more slightly complicated work like injector swap. Always great content you put out 🔥🔥!!
I’m glad to hear it man! These things aren’t too complicated to work on. Just look intimidating when you don’t know what you’re looking at.
Hot shots stiction eliminator in the hpop. Huge difference in in injector performance after about 50 miles. Ps just did oil cross over and drove about 400 miles. Could not believe how quiet it is. Especially once warm.
Not gonna lie, that truck sounds exactly like mine in terms of slappage and thunkage, especially at idle, with mine being more muffled while driving. This has me pretty convinced my truck is alright. I know my injectors are on their way out, but this video was the reassurance I needed to save up for and fix other things first before the injectors. Like my non working TC Motor, or tires, or oil (I'm 3800 since my last change no I'm not one of *those* people).
This is kinda normal having loose hold down bolts after a injector swap. I see it quite often and have started to re-torque them hot after a few weeks of driving. If you torque to spec and let them sit an hour and do a second torque - you will find them loose. Not much - like a quarter to a half turn before the torque number is reach. I have found this to be related to the the copper seal washer between the head and the injector itself. When torqued to spec - the injector compress the copper washer and sink further down into the head creating space between injector and hold down clamp. After I startet doing the two torque steps with new bolts and a hot re-torque, the problem with injector knock where almost not existent. Not many of my customers understand the need of another visit for a hot re-torque, and I’m to old and grumpy to explain - so I just add those expenses in to the quote and do it for ‘’free’’ .
The importance of using OEM O-rings (Allient) cannot be stressed enough - cheap E-bay or Chinesium ones will fail and bite you from behind. This goes for parts like sensors as well -seven3’s like OEM parts.
I’ve had good luck with rebuilding injectors as long as the cores are within spec (Armature clearance not less than 2 thou - I don’t shim them) using parts from Italien Redat. My favorite for the seven3 is the hybride 238cc/80% nozzle - not too oil hungry and easy to tune with OEM parts. With correct mods and a well made tune - they make decent power.
Nice truck - well done mate👍
Great info man! Thanks!
@@LivingOnWheels Have to say -this is my personal experience, which have to be taken lightly. I have been trough some of the internet forums seeking info about this and beknownst to me most are like you have a loose injector or you don't. I think there are a reason for this and to me the most logical reason is related to use of old hold down bolts and the copper washer getting chrused. I worked 8 yrs as a tech for Volvo Penta and the problem relatet to loose injectors where solved with a hot retorque even if the book told us it wasn't necessary. These days I'm working on seven3 mostly and I've had this problem myself with HEUI injectors getting loose costing me time to getting it right. Have a blessed day :-)
After 3 HPOP/Fuel Bowl removals on my truck my engine bay is so clean. I recently did the water pump and while I had all that stuff off of the front of the engine I went to town cleaning. Planning to do bellowed up pipes and the kc300 at the end of summer or early fall.
Hey there, I wanted to share what has happened with mine in the past. I had noticed that my truck was louder and just kept it in mind. I changed the cam position sensor and the truck got quiet again. I've done that twice already where I change the CPS and the truck runs quieter and more efficient. Another thing I noticed is that I started using Archoil in my oil and fuel, and man it gets pretty quiet. Anyway, thanks for all of your content.
Hmmmm maybe I’ll have to give that a shot. It switched mine probably a year ago or so. I don’t remember if the noise started then or not.
Where did you get the censor?
I have 160/80cc injectors and all the same stuff done to my truck that you have do to yours. It sounds just like mine. Sounds good to me. My #1 thing I have to remind myself is that these truck are loud clacky sucks and if it's not broke don't fix it.
I appreciate the input!
What HP/Torque numbers approx do you guys think you are getting with the KC turbo and AC code injections?
I think you are experiencing the young mom syndrome - you wake up at night thinking you hear your baby crying. I'v had mine for 21 years and I'm always thinking I'm hearing something. Your truck sounds (before and after) just fine to me.
I swear I’m hearing something in my 95 7.3 dam it
Sounds Sweet like my 2000 7.3, and I got the single shot injectors too... But my new issue is a blown hi-pressure line leak at the pump, so No Rust in my valley 🤣😂😀
If oil is coming out of anywhere other than the return port, sounds like a blown top Oring leaking
I _think_ mine sounds okay, but I don't know what mine is supposed to sound like as this is my first 7.3 and the original owner was... less than stellar in his maintenance. I was getting major oil contamination in my coolant so I resealed the oil cooler and did a super flush on the cooling system. Now it's blowing a lot of smoke. I didn't even think about the injector bolts coming loose so I'll have to add that to the list of things to check. Thanks!
While you have it opened up it would probably be worth while to pull the injectors to check on them and put new Orings on them.
Keep checking your fluids see what their doing if you still have oil and antifreeze mixing look into replacing injector cups. There is lots of videos on that. Also at that time you will need to replace all injector o-rings. Your 7.3 is an awesome engine watch every vid you can and power stroke help .com is a great place for info on the 7.3. Good luck.
It’s funny cuz as an X-7.3 Powerstroke owner I can tell if a truck has an injector knock. Sometimes I’ll be at the store & there will be another diesel idling/either most of the Ford diesels after 1994 my siblings think I’m crazy, I can hear a faint slap or knock. An injector knock fades, a rod knock gets louder as RPMs climb.
My current 7.3 idi has a bad injector & I can listen to em under the hood just by goosing the pump throttle which is nice since the injectors are up top.
The injectors need to be changed, but until it gets pretty bad, I’m not touching em. @N/A 6.9/7.3L idi! I love my mechanical idi!
Had a 95 PSD & hated the wiring on it was a mess, I fixed it the best I could, & sold it along w a ton of other shit it needed.
Personally I just leave her greasy/rust prevention, & so yeah.
Since you changed the injectors a short time ago and found about half your bolts "loose" maybe you should check the other ones on the passenger side ones too. Noise does travel across the heavy metal in these trucks.
I Finally bought my first desiel, 2000 f350 7.3 6 spd crew cab with 390k. Was maintained every 5k miles and it is 100% stock for now. Gotta go back and watch all your videos for cleaning. Plan on 4" turbo back exhaust sooner than later. Just cleaning everything up to see any leaks. Following your recommendations on most things.
I probably will open up the passenger side at some point to do a hot torque on them. I dont really have any specific videos for cleaning. The advice I always give is as your'e working on thinks clean it before it goes back together.
Mines sounds the same, like it's struggling. But when I get on it, it runs well. I actually can hear knocking when sitting still but it isn't continuous like in synch with cylinders.
Hey you showed up on my feed today
Sounds like my 7.3 when I had an exhaust manifold leak. Check driver side, very rear cylinder, closest to firewall. Just put in new Ford factory manifold gaskets with new bolts.
I was thinking the same thing. I took a look at the drivers side manifold and did see anything that looked like a leak but I might need to go take a closer look
Appluad the no leak 7.3 im happy for you im still trying to find the one towards the front by oil reservoir iv repkaced ipr icp all hpop lines all fuel lines its gotta be the hpop or reservoir i tske it
Could be the reservoir but my guess is it’s one of the many seals on the HPOP itself.
my 97 had a Nosie like what ur saying and i replaced all injectors went away
Truck sounds fine
Your ride sounds fine.
I have a 2000 7.3 liter with 228,000m on it. Mine sounds like the valves are allowing the valve to slap. It gets louder as the the RPMs go up.
I am slowly getting my truck under control. replaced most sensors the HPOP, soon injectors, plenums and turbo.
Then need to get my ZF6 rebuilt.
Great stuff
Hahaha you and me are the same “it can all be in my head”
Haha it kills me when I think I’m hearing things.
I have noticed the same issue. Seems a little louder this year. I am stock, original injectors. I’m going to live with it.
Forgot to tell you . I’m at 250,000 miles. I’m happy with this truck. Love your videos.
250k is a good life for injectors! As long as she’s still running good, I’d let her run 👍🏻
@@LivingOnWheels 🤞
Great 7.3 videos man. keep up the good work
Thanks for the videos
My 7.3 1996. Was running good. Had fuel leak. Fixed fuel lines on drivers side new motorcraft fuel filter. Fresh oil change was a bear to start had it running ok, had fuel lines wrong
Return and feed were switched on frame rail.
Reinstalled them correctly had motor eventually running very well 2hrs plus driving running,,,, then idling developed a misfire. Rough idle in all ranges starts up well but misfires idk what it could be sounds like a dead injector or 2 some black smoke slight knock , miss on top end idk what it could be
I'd start by checking the valve cover harness. Or doing a buzz test if you can.
@@LivingOnWheels I need a good scanner maybe one to use with my android any recommendations
Not sure on Android stuff, but I’d say auto ingenuity is the best system for our trucks.
Good video!!! You could try some opti-lube XPD fuel additive and see if that helps.
I actually run Optilube in almost every tank haha. The engine does like it.
My 99 makes the same noise and I’m chasing it. It I think it’s the up pipe on the driver side at the turbo where they y together the one donut is leaking I noticed it when I did the torque converter and it was only visible with the trans out so it could be that that gaskets is leaking it’s right near the fire wall and sounds like a exhaust leak
It may be. I’ve looked and didn’t see any leaks but I should give it another look over at some point
The truck sounds great.
What oil and weight did you use? If you could hear more when cold just curious 🧐 as thicker oil in particular could cause more noise until up to full temp. Certainly the hot torque was a good idea too.
Currently running 5w40 synthetic. I am also glad I did the hot retorque
Right on
my 02 f350 stock injectiors but your truck sounds same as mine
It misfires in the morning but it goes away after like 10 -15 mins of driving. What could that be?
Stiction
dumb question are single shot injectors not louder then split shot? I'm hoping to change out my injectors on my 2002 next month , trucks runs fine but has just a little over 223K.. going back with stock Inj, Thanks 4 your vids
Split shot is quieter, single shot is louder...
Yup, like jag said, single shots are louder than split shots. That’s one of the reasons they switched to them. That’s also one of the reasons why newer trucks are even quieter. They fire many times per combustion cycle
I've watched this video countless times and I'm just now noticing a CB antenna?
You noticed correctly.
@@LivingOnWheels when I'm done with the headache of the rear turbo clamp, I'll make a short on my CB antenna 😎
I keep my valley well lubricated thank you very much🥲
Got one more valve cover gasket with a tiny tiny leak now lol, should be sealed by them
13:30 I had my valve covers off and saw 3 injectors spitting similar to this. I wasn't sure what to make of it. I'm currently chasing what seems to be a bad injector as it runs rough at all RPM's like it's down a cylinder. (But it cranks very smooth) I'm pretty sure the factory injectors are still in there.
1999 7.3 with 212k miles and "AB" injectors.
Any luck ?
Think you need o rings ?
@@adamgreen6793 I'm still not sure. Haven't messed with it. I've been told by others it needs injectors. I did run the Amsoil in the oil. I do think there's a bit of 'stiction'. I also bought a cheap obd2 blue tooth reader and downloaded the app "obd check", got the powerstroke adders and according to that, my HPOP is good.
Hey did you ever figure out what the problem was
@@chaseoverbeck8246No. I gave up on it.
Was this ever resolved? Mine sounds same. Only w my head under passenger side wheelwell. I can also hear from exhaust reflecting off walls in alleyway.
No real conclusion other than it just being a noisy single shot injector 7.3. Truck still drives and performs perfectly.
I wish that was my case. Started puffing white, went home and did a cylinder contribution test, and 1,4, and 6 failed. 318k mile injectors finally bit the bullet. 🙄
Well, I’d say that’s a pretty long life for injectors.
@@LivingOnWheels Sure enough, but being only 17 and having a 3,000$ bill isn't easy. But 180/30 FFD injectors with a KC 63/73 is going in this summer.😈👌
Ahhhh yeah I’ve been there!
Rod knock?
Idm since you have upgrade injectors I would go to 140v upgrade
Any chance the fuel bowl delete caused it? I remember you said 50-55 psi is it supposed to be higher like 65-70?
I highly doubt it. The injectors have been getting a much healthier supply of fuel than they would’ve with the stock deadheaded system. They were kept right around 60psi. I think it was mostly just in my head and them being typical noisy single shot 7.3 injectors.
So was there any resolution to this? My 7.3 sounds EXACTLY the same...
Nothing. Still running strong. Think it was just in my head single shots are noisy
Did you ever finish the engine cover you were working on?
Bypass your tuner run it stock. Or if adjustable run stock to eliminate it.
With single shot injectors on Super Duty you need a tuner to run the injectors because stock injectors or split shot injectors.
Did you ever figure out what it was?
Just noisy single shot injectors.
Hey man , I’m have a weird thing with the 7.3
Like your grill guard, what’s the brand?
It’s a ranch hand
are you running 5w40 10w30 synthetic if yes there is your injector knock go back to 15w40 semi and you will be fine
Interesting, I have never heard someone say this. So you would say a lower viscosity oil has more injector noise? I could see the logic in that.
Like your grill guard, what brand is it?
Ranch Hand, their bumpers are pretty sweet, but ARB is still the most heavy duty.
U need fuel additive hotshots works good.deisal crap now days.dirty injectors. Hotshots will quiet the injectors
I’ve run hotshots before. I actually run optilube in almost every tank
Have you changed your hpop oil recently. When I do mine sometimes a few days later it'll run funny for a min or two then be fine
Nope, I never have
Just FYI, the hpop is fed by the low pressure oil pump/sump, it is not a separate system. In fact, the hpop reservoir gets a complete turnover of oil _every 7 seconds_ at idle. Opening it merely introduces air into the hpop & lines, which would make it 'hiccup' for a minute or two until it purges air from the system.
@@arrowdog8852 oh I know. Jus saying what mine does when I change it. More so if I drain and fill. Run for 10min and do it again. For whatever reason that oil in hpop and rails doesn't get circulated as well. Never thought it made much of a difference till I see people doing it and tried it myself. Oil actually stays the yellow color for a couple weeks vs a day.
What do you think your horsepower numbers are with the setup you got?
I’d guess on my hottest tune around 350 at the wheels.
So all you did was torque them correctly? If you want to quiet your truck down even more, install the Adrenaline HPOP.
They were properly torqued when installed. This was just retorquing them after about a year of driving to see if it made a difference. Conclusion is they’re just noisy single shot injectors
@@LivingOnWheels ok nice.... maybe you can help with my issue, I have a knock sensor code. Happens when on a heavy load towing, the injector disables. I heard that it could be an injector leaking diesel into the cylinder causing preignition thus causing a knock sensor to go off.
Assuming you have a 7.3 powerstroke. These engines don’t have a knock sensor. That’s a gasser thing. So perhaps the code was read wrong or a mistake when looking it up.
Depending on what’s been done to your truck you could be over posting and having it pull fueling.
@@LivingOnWheels i have the international harvester with t444e engine. Same block but a few things are different. Says knock sensor #13 on the code scanner.
@@gixxer4eva hmm. I don’t think the t444e has a knock sensor either. Does it give you the actual code? Or just the description?
Do you have stock up pipes? It sounds like an exhaust leak on camera
I do have stock pipes for now. So far, their is no signs of leaking on them yet. That is definitely something I thought about. I need to give my manifolds a good look over though.
Stock up pipes are questionable at best over 150k miles
Yeah. They are definitely on the list to be replaced
@@LivingOnWheels mine has the stock up pipes, I’m at 186 on the clock and they have started leaking and it sounds similar to yours on camera of course
I'm working on doing alot of the same upgrades. How do you like the 160injectors with the stage 1 turbo. How much more power do you notice. Can't decide to go with what you did or the stage 2 turbo with 180s. How did it affect your mpg
It's a big difference over stock but it's not crazy by any means. I have been happy with them.
Oh! What's the cost to relocate the fuel bowl?? got some drippage at the bleed valve; so wat da heck, let's move it off the engine and on the frame where it belongs!
Lots of different options out there to do so. Price varies depending.
What ever up being the issue?
No issue was found. Still runs fine. Just noisy powerstroke single shot injectors haha.
My 99 with with 296k doesnt sound like that!!!
Does your 99 have single shot injectors?
@@LivingOnWheels might not but my 04 didnt sound like thay either.
Not sure when they went to dual shot injectors
@@joshballenger3629 they went to split shots in 99 with the change of body style. These are aftermarket single shot injectors in this truck which is why they are quite a bit louder.
@@LivingOnWheels IDI??
that would make sense.
Those things loud af
I hear an exhaust leak?
Maybe. I need to give it a really good lookover
Run some hotshots threw it
To long wined with ur videos
Gassers 😂😂
Hey man I watch your videos I love the channel man ! I sent you a measure through Instagram i would appreciate it if you checked it out man. My truck is surgeonfish bad after a first start up being parked for a year and I don’t know what to do next
I would say you have a bad O-ring (largest set). I think that oil you are seeing going to the right is not coming from the oil spout but just exiting so it looks like it is from there but actually going past the upper O-rings.
Same
Like your grill guard, what brand is it?
Looks like a ranch hand grill guard.
