  • @PikachuG5
    @PikachuG5 4 роки тому +7

    You could make a breakout box using valve cover harness connectors and use it on one side at a time. To cover all the HEUI 7.3s, you'd need to make an adapter for the 94.5-98s, since there are 2 connectors on each valve cover gasket, however. I made one using the main (42 pin) harness connectors and a bunch of momentary switches, and it works on all the 7.3 HEUI engines.

    The idi motors had a mechanical injection pump, but in 94.5 they swapped to the heui, not 99. The mechanical pump in the valley is a lift pump on the obs’s. The idi motors were completely different than the power strokes.

      This video is one I'm scheduled to redo hopefully soon. There is a verbal error in which I give the wrong year the engine changed from direct injection to the new injectors. But the information is still correct. Next 7.3 I will.

  • @frankscott8555
    @frankscott8555 5 років тому +31

    They made 3 different 7.3. The 7.3 direct injection, the 7.3 huei injection system which was single shot injectors and it ran from 95-99, and then the second generation 7.3 huei injection system which was split shot injectors except for cylinder #8 and it ran from 99-03.
    You can bypass manually pulling parts first by getting a 2.2k ohm resistor and install it into the engine temp sensor. This will trick the ecm/pcm into thinking the engine temp is at 212"F so it will allow you to do an injector test with a cold engine. I see this a lot with the international 444 and 466 engines. I hope this will help you save some time in the future. Good video, thanks.

    • @PatrickBaptist
      @PatrickBaptist 4 роки тому +7

      The first 7.3 was IDI not DI (not a powerstroke and made till early 94), all the DI 7.3s were HEUIs 94.5-2003 (though IH continued making them till 04 T444E).

    Thanks for the great vid. I have a 1996 7.3 with 276,000 miles. runs like a gas v8 with a plug wire removed. Buzz test is good. (Car Gauge Pro app @ $5.99 and a BAFX bluetooth obd2 adapter @$20). No oil usage, no smoke, and good fuel economy. Removed the valve covers and watched all injectors squirting oil from the spouts nice and consistent. Found cylinder 5 exhaust manifold runner to be 30 degrees cooler than the others. Removed the injector connectors one at a time. RPMS dropped significantly on all cylinders except 5. Tomorrow I will do a compression test on 5. I think the problem is the fuel side of the injector. The presence of the correct amount of oil flowing from the spout does not guarantee a good injector.

      @@SandCarServices Compression test today on cold running cylinder #5 with good oil discharge from spout shows a remarkable 380 psi cold at an elevation of almost 6,000 feet above sea level. What would be the next logical test? I am suspicious of the fuel side of the injector. Could it fail or plug while the high pressure oil and electrical parts of the injector pass testing? l also found the armature clearance to be 3.5 thousandths. Thanks for your help.

      replaced the injector today and now I have all eight cylinders firing well. The injector jets on the tip of the injector were completely encased in carbon. I suspect that the high pressure oil and electrical functions of the injector were working. The injector tip and orifices were simply clogged. The "positive test for failed injector" did not apply to this case. Thanks for your vids, they help me lots.

    Cummins 6bt (2nd gen w/with wet liners) is the best light/medium duty diesel ever produced,in my opinion.....once the "dowel pin of death" mod is done,they're bullet proof...and found to be the easiest,in engine compartment diesel to diagnose and work on too(again,just my opinion) .... The 1st and 2nd gen 7.3s are definitely on my top 3 list too(#2) and of coarse I'm gonna get crap for this,but the 6.0 powerstrokes are damn good engines too,when treated right, with no Bulletproofing......great video by the way...just happened to be scrolling through and decided to stop here...glad I did,cause it's very straight forward in comparison to other 7.3 vids...liked👍 and subd

      Your full of shit unless you don't plan on owning one on these for very long. My 2000 7.3 has 800,000 miles. I seen a hotshot driver on UA-cam wirh 1,300,000 miles on his. Motor never even rebuilt. 6.0 never make it. 5.9 will be spitting out water from under headgasket .

    • @mikekopisz1227
      @mikekopisz1227 4 роки тому +2

      For one, It's "you're"....not your....and two,how am I full of shit? Do you even know what a 6bt is? I'm assuming not....and FYI,the 24v ('98.5-'2002) are the engines that have head warping issues that lead to gasket leaks...which a simple solution is fire ringing it....And,yes, A Cummins 6bt with a p7100 is a damn good engine...7.3s are good too,as I mentioned...And I'm also willing to bet that you're not aware that there are 3 generations of the 7.3...now,for you to think it's easier to work on a 7.3 V8 vs a 5.9 Inline 6,then you've obviously never pulled a cab neither,cause you can't do anything major(heads,full overhauls,etc) on a non OBS without pulling the cab ....and yes,6.0s are a damn good engine if they're treated right(untuned)(even the 1st Gen 6.0s with the round HPOP)...EGR cooler delete is the only recommendation I give my customers' for those and STC fitting updates for first gens....I have serviced SEVERAL with over 600k,daily drivers,that have needed nothing but am injector here and there and p.m.'s...The only engine and last engine that Ford had contacted International to build,is the 6.4...which is a garbage engine and the reason Ford dumped them and started doing all of there Diesel's with the introduction of the new 6.7 common rail....So,don't come on my post talking shit and using "I saw a engine on UA-cam" as your ammo for my OPINION of my top 3 light/medium engines...This is coming from a Master ASE certified tech, that's been pulling cabs for over 20years and been in the industry doing this everyday for the past 25yrs.... Shit,I've overhauled Warsillas and Mans that are the size of your vehicle,so there isn't shit you can tell me,that I already don't know..good day to you sir

    All 7.3 powerstrokes from 94.5-03 are direct injection ID HEUI (High-Pressure Oil Injection). None of them had external fuel rails. The IDI indirect injection trucks stoped some where around 94/95 and were not branded or referred to as powerstrokes. Also none of them had fuel pumps on the intake manifold not even the IDI. 99-03 trucks had the electric fuel pump on the frame rail below the driver and OBS PS trucks had a mechanical lift pump in the engine valley in front of the turbo but behind the fuel filter housing. IDI 7.3 and 6.9 trucks had the lift down near the bottom of the engine near the front and it was just a old style fuel transfer pump that worked at a very low pressure similar to most carburetor style diagram pumps.

    Amen the 7.3/T444E is one of the best, def best in the light duty pickups.
    Sir the HEUIs came out in 94.5 not 99.5, they went to 120v IDMs in 99.5 from 100/110v IDMs in the early PSDs.
    IF it's a 7.3 POWERSTROKE then it has the HEUI injection setup.
    If you think I'm wrong, I have sever truck videos that you can see the HEUI is on 96 and 97 F series with the 7.3PSDs.

Just replaced injectors (Motorcraft), and buzz test sounds great. Only code left is p1000 (drive test). Engine cranks but doesn't run. Found a grounded electrical conductor in Bank 1 at injector 7, so I replaced the manifold gaskets to the new all-in-one harness upgrade. New glow plugs and fuel filter with fresh fuel. ICP sensor is the updated version, and no oil is found inside the connector. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and again thank you for this video.

      I was going to suggest IDM, injector driver module, but the buzz test being OK makes that unlikely. If you are seeing proper pressure for a cranking engine on the sensor through a scan tool, one other thing might be the throttle pedal position sensor. Steven Cox's channel has a video on that causing a crank no start. Did you ever figure it out, seeing that this reply is one year later?

    Also,keep in mind,as of '2000,on the 2nd gen 7.3s # 8 cylinder (bank2),uses a different injector p/n v.s. cylinders 1-7 ....it runs at a different fuel rate and the coil is different (cosmetically looks the same) ....I've heard all sorts of different reasons why #8 is different,from prevention of cylinder loading,causing a knock,to prevention of a lean condition on #8 which can cause a meltdown ....I've put a regular injector into a customers' 7.3 in an emergency and was suppose to replace with the correct injector,but that was well over 5yrs ago and the truck is still on the road daily, pulling a trailer with a skid steer and is still running perfect(client decided to leave it as is cause its running great!)...So,I truly don't know the real reason behind why Ford used a different injector in #8 ...also,internalional built the long block only...Ford added their own fuel system and induction to pass EPA regulations....fun fact though...the International DT466 inline 6 Huei uses the same injectors as the 7.3(for 1-7)

    I'm having a tough go with my 99 f350. New icp, cps, you know, ipr, and I'm putting in an IDM now, but don't expect anything to change given the guy I bought it from had apparently replaced the idm 3 times as theres a graveyard of them in the back of the cab. I see oil pressure when it cranks, it cranks with a great pulse like there's good compression. I think the guy replaced the hpop, fuel pump too. Just cannot get it to turn over with new batteries, new cables. Im at low oil pressure pump, or the wiring harness that is connected to glow plugs, or injectors

    Ron, what do you mean by a dead injector? I just rebuilt my injectors
    and after a couple of weeks it started smoking black smoke. I did the buzz test and contribution test. The buzz test was difficult to distinguish the difference in the injectors the contribution test said the 1 and 3 were not contributing. I'm thinking maybe it's the connection at the harness or the harness itself may be damaged. If that doesn't fix the problem I'm thinking the solenoids may be bad. Any ideas?

    I recently purchased a full set of rebuild 7.3 injectors (1998 van). After having installed 6 of them, I found that the next box I opened had a different brand of injector. What do you think about "mix matched" injectors? Is it normal (or even acceptable) to have different brands of injectors come as part of a set? No "long lead" injector in my '98, so they should all be the same brand. Am I right? Am I mistaken, in my thinking/expectations?

    Hi Ron. Nice video and quite educational. Did that injector that was not exhausting oil start working gradually as thre motor warmed up? I wasn't sure if I heard it was a cold motor only problem or that it did it warm as well. Mine, a 2000 7.3, has basically the same issue. Misses when cold with some white (fuel) smoke and goes away quickly as the motor warms up but it is getting worse. And as you mentioned, mine passed the buzz test very well.
    My truck has about 210k mi on her. If I find a bad inj doing the same thing, should I replace one or all injectors?
    Thanks!

    • @johnwythe1409
      @johnwythe1409 3 роки тому +1

      I thought from what he said it was a cold start issue, and ran fine once warmed up. I have same issue as well, and no start below 34F and poor start below 46F unless plugged in. Usually runs rough for a while when does start, with blue and white smoke. Once warm runs fine, except occasionally significant oil loss in short period of time, other times I can go long periods with out needing to top up.
      I am into driver side right now. all glow plugs are fine, removed and tested. Replaced O rings on injector, all looked good. Unless there is a problem with the glow plug circuitry I think problem might be that injectors need shimming, or rebuilt. From what I have heard too low a clearance can cause the magnet and armature to stick and not fire, once the oil warms up it won't stick as much. I don't know for sure, if a buzz test would catch that or not. After watching some more videos I am at least going to check the clearance on my injectors. Easy enough to do with the valve cover off, just need to remove those 4 screws on top to get access the the armature. I wish I had seen these videos before I re installed the driver side injectors, but not too hard to check. I have the shim kit and cup kit on order just in case, might also need to get hold of the injector rebuild kit. I have 3 or 4 scanners that work with my iphone/ipad, but I have yet to get a combination of scanner and software to work very well with my 2000-F-250.

    There is a fuel leak somewhere in the valley of the motor I've tried UV dye and could not find it. The leak has been an ongoing thing. Wondering if it finally caused pump damage or pressure is too low due to leak getting worse. ???
