I did this last year and they fired me on the spot. Hired a lawyer, deemed retaliation. Someone who has had perfect attendance, no performance issues and I resigned effective the next day and they fired me because I told them I will not be giving a two weeks notice.
I've seen companies go out of business for dirty dealings like this...The company may have the upper hand momentarily when terminating an employee however, if there's a culture of distrust and meanness, that business will not last. It will gradually fall apart.
If you give a two week notice many companies fire you effective immediately.

My coworker got a five minute notice. I however have been told I had points so I know it was coming with their bogus points system. Never possible we should never ever ever give them a notice unless they’ve been very very very good to us, which is very very, very rare.

If you live in an at will hire/fire state, it’s whatever. I prefer to do a two weeks notice, but I have left with none before. It depends on how awful the work conditions are, and what I’m responsible for. When I was a lower level peon, it didn’t make much difference, but once I was occupying the slightly more important positions, I always did my best to give a notice so as not to screw over my coworkers.
If you expect two weeks notice, then give two weeks notice when the shoes on the other foot

No boss tells an employee who has just resigned what they prefer. If they want to leave without notice, employers don’t stress over it. It just reinforces the point that it’s best they leave. If they’re ever contacted in the future for a reference, they simply won’t give a favorable one. I love how these scenarios imply that the employer is affected one iota. They could care less. People quit every day. In most cases, HR is posting their job within 24 hours of receiving the resignation letter and moving on. Every position is replaceable

I've never heard of this happening in the UK. Normally you email your line manager giving a month's notice, which is the time during which your new employer asks for references from your existing job. You can't be let go from your existing job for no reason either.

More than 50 years ago I was fired without notice. I had no idea why the manager didn't like me. Two years later his supervisor saw me dressed for work & asked me why I didn't go back to them. I explained I was fired. He said I don't care about that. I want you to come & work for us in our JC office & then train the new people in our main office. I gave two weeks notice to my present job & started working for my old employer. Decades later I saw the manager who fired me. He pursued me in an effort to talk to me saying he was sorry that he took out his struggles with his teenage daughter, who I reminded him of, on me. Wow! I was shocked & it didn't take long to realize that that conversation was healing for both of us. ☮️💞🙏

I hated the manager at one of my jobs. Then I found out I was only hired because she had long service leave coming up and needed the extra manpower. I waited until the Friday before she left for her leave and told her I quit. Her final Friday was also going to be my last day. The look on her face was priceless. Found out from sources in the company that she had to come back in on her leave to train a new person. Serves her right for being awful to me.

Depending what country you're in.
My country, if you don't give the required notice (as per your employment contract, the Federally Legislated Award, or other agreement) you forfeit your accumulated leave being paid out, and the pay you'd receive for the notice period.
By the same token, if you're fired on the spot, the employer must pay out all accumulated leave and the payment period in lieu of notice.
If you are required to give 2 weeks notice, and they fire you, they have to pay you those 2 weeks before you leave. (Or at least provide proof they've transferred the funds to your bank account before you leave).

This year I was getting out with my family to have dinner at 5:30 pm I got a call from work and got fired in front of my whole family with no notice. I didn’t do anything wrong at work I actually had a really good meeting at 4:00-4:30 just an hour before that happened. I am still angry about this

We do. They're usually more to protect the company against lawsuits than anything of advantage to the employee. I worked for a large software company for a few years and there was a lengthy contract. Some parts weren't enforceable where I lived as they were contrary to state law. The company didn't like that but too bad.

That type of twisted logic is why a lot of the workforce is hostile. I have to stay in a toxic environment and continue giving myself to the company so that it doesn't interrupt their productivity BUT the doesn't have to do the same for me.
