      The way it's SUPPOSED to work (when it's a professional courtesy) is that you are paid out for those two weeks regardless of whether they use that time or not. When they let you go you get minimum 2 weeks and preferably full severance. When you give 2 weeks notice they pay out those two weeks.
      Problem is, that's a social contract, not a legal one in most cases. An many companies are MORE than willing to screw you.
      I can say that MOST of my employers when they've let me go have paid out minimum 2 weeks. This is in tech. But there are a few that wouldn't as a matter of policy.
      In those cases you absolutely should not give 2w notice.

      @Johnadams20760 which is a good reason to not reciprocate. Profesional courtesy has to go both ways. For a company that treats its employees with professional courtesy, I will always provide a 2 week notice. Or more. I've been places that give 6mo severance. I'll give them as much heads up as they would like.
      On the other end, if it's a place that doesn't give severance and has a history of zero notice termination? Yeah, I don't feel bad in the slightest about giving zero notice.

      They could have called someone in or tried to fix the schedule for that week to account for my loss, but they probably didn't until they were told that I quit.
      In hindsight, I think I should have worked there for a few more days so that they had time to adjust to my not being there.

    Had this exact conversation at my last job. My boss said that without a two week notice I wouldn’t be eligible for a rehire. I told her that if I had gotten to the point where I wanted to resign why would I ever desire to come back? The last few people who left had submitted two week notices and they were told to pack up and leave immediately, why give them the satisfaction?

    • @cc-tb3st
      @cc-tb3st 2 місяці тому +49

      As a business owner, I generally try to make two weeks effective immediately. It's just to protect my company. I do compensate the employee for the wages they would have earned during the notice. I do not tolerate poor employees so I don't have poor employees giving me two notice. That means all the employees that do give me two week notice, I would prefer to keep. I want their last interaction with my company to be good in case they would consider coming back in the future. It's a lot more financially beneficial to rehire a good employee that thought the grass was greener on the other side than it is to hire and train a new employee you have no history with. I have about a 25% return rate after 6 months and about 40% overall for employees that gave me 2 weeks. I'm sure there's a good percentage of employees that gave me a 2-week notice that I paid out that had no intention of ever returning because they were unhappy with my business but they knew if they gave it two week notice they got paid for those two weeks. They were just taking advantage of the situation but they would have walked out from most other companies. They knew when they gave me the two-week notice it was their last day they just wanted that money. It's still worth it to me though. The employees I did recapture have all performed excellently for me.

    A two-week notice is a courtesy from the past. Employees don't have to do that anymore, and they never had to. It was something the companies wanted. It only benefits the company, not the employee. When an employee decides to leave, they don't plan to return, especially if the company treats its employees disrespectfully and the pay is not right. Most of the time, the employee is leaving for higher pay and better benefits. I understand this fully, and I work in management in Corporate America. I always remembered my roots and treated every employee with respect.

    I had a very similar conversation when leaving a job about 14 years ago. My manager posted schedules ~1-3 days before they started, and just posted a week at a time. The company policy was that schedules be posted 3 weeks at a time, 3 weeks in advance. I frequently had to change plans, and never made it to family gatherings. My fiance and then wife would go in my place. One Friday I was scheduled off, but got called in to close the store. I asked who else they had tried first, and they told me no one, because all the other assistant managers had requested it off. So I changed plans once again, missed a date night, and walked in with my letter of resignation, effective in 3 days. When the manager complained, I told her, “I’m giving you the courtesy of the maximum number of days you give any of us.”
    She gave me the same spiel about not being rehireable, and it has not hurt me one bit.

      I had similar problems with scheduling in one of my first jobs. I never canceled my plans. I just told them that due to them violating their own policies there was a scheduling conflict, and I wouldn’t be in. Always emailed it to my manager. She said if I valued my employment there I would have to figure out how to work with her way of scheduling. I told her if she values her employment there she should consider the lengthy email chain of me complaining about her violations of corporate policy and her responses telling me basically to just suck it up and deal with it. She never did get me to comply. Eventually I found a better job and just stopped showing up.

      Well fair is fair. Some folk will see how far they can get over on you (especially if the job/position is regular smegular). Their approach and thinking often times is, “this person doesn’t know better and likely needs this job (especially if you’re efficient and execute your tasks as needed). I remember a manager having the nerve to send me an email saying that he was giving me a first warning about something (I forget). Meanwhile this guy (after I requested an additional day off one particular week, he completely ignored my request and scheduled me to come in on my day off. I was already working 5:days a week (15 -17 hour days and it began to take its toll. Someone did tell me that asking him for day offs would lead to him doing the likes, but I didn’t take all that he was telling me serious. The minute he sent me that email that he was giving me a first time warning. I responded with my resignation. He had the nerve to respond to me quitting and said, “I thought you would never quit.” I just rolled my eyes with disgust because I’m sure that he was the type that felt I was there to impress him/them, whoever. I wish Americans knew how crazy that sounds to us Europeans. I am Belgian and firing someone with immediate effect is only done rarely and only when it's unavoidable and the person gets a sum of money and then right away a monthly government paycheck (but maybe not when you were fired for company theft or something).
      The way you guys are forced to live when it comes to basic rights such as employee rights, healthcare, schooling etc, it's appalling, truly. I don't even want to start on the opioid crisis, it's insane.
      I'm no expert but for sure you guys need a good dash of socialism (which is totally not the same as communism) to make life livable.

    Yeah, had this happen to me. I gave an old job a one week notice. I did want to give them two weeks, I told my new job that it was professional to do so etc (just showing that I was a good and responsible person if nothing else), but they said they wouldn't hold that against me and they really needed the position filled. I really didn't care about being "professional" to my old job because they were abusive, so, one week notice it was. My supervisor was furious, saying "You really couldn't give us a bigger heads up?" I reminded her that she knew I would be likely searching for employment elsewhere and soon because they did not give me the salary they promised for like, a year, and this was a discussion we had a little less than a month ago. She was just mad I found another job so soon XD Then she decided during my last week, they were going to promote a current worker to my position and told me I had to train her. I didn't. I apologized to the girl who was taking my place, but I told her my story, gave her a very basic overview, helped her move her stuff into her new office, and told her that any questions and training needed moving forward she would have to get in touch with her new supervisor. I also gave a heads up to the managers I worked with what was going on so they could steel themselves for the inevitable fallout.
