With FrSky pushing ACCESS on all their hardware, it turned out that R9M modules will not be compatible with ACCESS (that includes more FrSky hardware BTW) and if users want to migrate their R9 fleet to ACCESS, they have to buy new module called R9M2019 (and new radios as well). I purchased R9M2019 and let's compare what changed inside: 2018 R9M vs R9M2019

The voltage regulator was change because some people have burn their old/pre-2019 with 3S. The max voltage is also change in the manuals from 2S to 3S.
You are right.. i just burnt one last night with 3s.. Such a shame on cheap Chinese hardware design...
I think I paid £30 for the old TX Module and a R9MM receiver...Running the latest Flex firmware on 868mhz it works just fine for me, although I have not flown out beyond 2 kms as yet...As long as FrSky continue to provide the old ACCT R9MM receivers, I dont have a problem. For £30 it works fine. If I want to fly proper long range, I use my Immersion RC EZUHF, which has endless range. I certainly wont be buying any TBS Crossfire just to fly a Mini-quad round my head, thats just nuts.
Thats a steal. I also managed to pick up mine with super 8 and slim+ for £40 and never looked back xd
Brought mine on pre-order back in 2018; £26 delivered and that included a R9MM receiver. Glad I didn't miss out on anything particularly special by being an early adopter though. :-)

I wish I'd never wasted $200+ on full Tbs XF Tx myself! I still have and use my old 2018 R9M Accst TX and R9 slim+'s and even on older firmware 180329 which I believe is 2 years old but honestly I've found to be best firmware version for me. I've also added a bluetooth module with inverter to my R9m and now I can use apps for live maps and antenna tracking! My Xf full has bluetooth module as well but getting it to actually work is damn near impossible and even when it does connect to anything it's to laggy. I'll keep my old R9M as long as possible. It's my go to period! People can't believe that I dislike XF and honestly I can't see how that's so hard to believe. First off I it's way over priced for what it is secondly most its features don't work properly and that to me is a no brainer. R9M 2018 works perfectly fine one just needs to learn how to use this system and updating them isnt a problem just make a harness and connect it when updating. Simple. Plus modding R9M is also simple. Try modding XF.. One more thing is TBS flat out lies about output power of full TX. Its nowhere near 2w with dynamic turned of and with proper test equipment my friend used we only got output of 862mw on 2w settings and dynamic OFF!!
I have one of the second generation pre-2019 R9M modules with the orange casing and not one of the first generation all black ones, so I just opened mine up and can confirm that the circuit is identical to Pawel's original one with the black casing. The only difference is that on mine, the two black header pin blocks top and bottom aren't present as they also aren't on the 2019 version, so those blocks originally got removed on the second generation of pre-2019 R9M modules.
I just cant understand why you would "upgrade" to access.. I'm happy with the R9 system I have now.
From what I understand it would update your rxs wirelessly, and other features like rx match where 1 model works for all quads. I dont think their going to support accst after a while, but Im telling you what I read on instagram, Im not sure everything about support is correct.
@@RCOverKill yea I know but u still have to use a wire connection the first time.. I have never pulled a receiver to update once in a quad.. I just am not going to support frsky and their access protocol.. I'm still pissed how they dumb down my qx7.. Thanks for the info

I think the pre-access R9 hardware is going to be worth more than the new R9Access shxt Frsky is peddling now. I am still flying with the older R9 a little, but have installed Crossfire in 3 of my aircraft now with more to come. And yes I have had to reflash my R9 receivers a coupe times because Frsky released them with horrible buggy firmware that took them years to resolve. and it is a pita digging them out of my wings, unsoldeirng them, soldering to a futaba plug, reflashing, then re soldering and reinstalling them! A PITA
I have the access R9M 2019 with R9MX access receiver. I have a th9x radio with er9x that has r9m protocol but I am unable to use it because of the access protocol. Is it possible to use access models with ppm protocol?
exactly the video i was waiting for, i was curious to see what changed in the R9M 2019 module, i have a Jumper T16 Pro on the way and maybe i will order an R9M 2019 module to test few things (i own 2 x R9M older modules) do u think there will be any possibility to port a version of Opentx which support Access to JumperTx (Opentx fork) so we can use Access protocol on our Jumper T16 radios (with R9M 2019 module) .... someone should work on this ;)

Paweł Spychalski is there a compatibility chart of all this r9 mess anywhere on the internet -- what hardware (both receivers and transmitters) works with which firmware versions and rx to tx compatibility?
Frsky is out of their mind if they think Ill buy their stuff ever again. I bought a pre 2019 module recently because I didnt know any better. Why would they think anyone would want to replace all their Tx equipment, and buy frsky again.
Disabling Crossfire instead of supporting it with their own OS to avoid needing to use OpenTX was not only a low blow... it stopped their momentum growing and reversed it as Flysky comes into play with a very good radio.

whats the score with the r9m and r9m 2019 on the jumper t16. does it really matter which you get, whats are the advantages or disadvantages, is it just the receivers you connect to them or is there something else too it?
Its more about the way the company is doing buisness, their trying to shut out the use of crossfire(didnt work), and with Frsky 2019 you can no longer fly whoops(d8 ) without an xjt module, which means you would have to pull crossfire module, buy, and put in the xjt. Module. 2019 also does not support the xm+ yet, its supposed to be in the 1st update. Not playing nice Imo.
I expect Frsky put different bootloaders or ID's so it is impossible to flash the old R9 with Acces, even if you would make some modifications to the IO ports /inverters. But really it is annoying I hope some hack appear soon, likley Frsky will stop bringing any feature updates for non Acces gear..

I already did exactly that. I bought the Crossfire Micro TX just last week along with some Crossfire Nano receivers. My pre-2019 R9M and R9MM will now just sit in their boxes gathering dust, or be used for experimental purposes. Thankfully I hadn't already invested very much money in the R9 system.

Just starting out with the combos they were selling cheap before releasing the 2019 models. Still coming to terms with running fport etc, and my first quad with r9 may fly this weekend. Only have the 2 r9minis's, can we still get the r9mm without access? and for how long. Maybe Jumper will copy the r9mm without access?
R9MM ACCESS version is still compatible with non-ACCESS radios, just flash the ACCST firmware.
Wander if we can just flash the 2019 R9m access firmware to the older R9m being its using the same chips?¿? All pins should b the same

My og R9 with my slim+ on 1W and a 2S external battery works just fine for me. I just bought a 2019 R9M with a superT for 30 dollars on sale rn just for the hell of it.

Hi, I bought R9M 2019 + R9 mini, on the stock firmware I managed to bind them, now I updated R9M with access firmware V 1.3.0 and I updated r9 mini with access firmware V 1.3.0.Now R9M wont get into binding mode, there is just solid red light, I tryed to bind it with transmitter, and modul alone powered with externall battery with both dip switches on their ON possition and I am getting same results.R9M doesnt flash red light like it should when in bind mode. What should I do about it? Please help.

No. No Access. I've a pre 2019 R9M. I might be wrong and the sound is actually made by the radio!? :-) Not sure anymore.

I always used a 3s LiFe.....so, no plus for me.
The biggest downside for me is the fact that ACCESS is not supported on QX7. So for me there is no point in upgrading. I consider that major fail because QX7 is like 2 year old radio model and already outdated. I might be more successful with my 2018 edition X-Lite with R9-Lite. Btw. R-XSR can be updated to ACCESS but the internal iXJT of X-Lite has no ACCESS fw either (and that is 1year old).
Don't know what to think. 🤔 Considering Tango2 or even the whole DJI FPV bundle. Pretty pissed off right now.

How do you know if you have a 2019 edition from the outside? Are all orange cases 2019? I have an orange case, but no label for voltage. It also doesn't have the pins on bottom and top on back. 2019 then?
If works with PSX2, but be 2019? Not sure how to see if PSX2 on TX.
There is label "R9M2019" on it. Logo is slightly different. See 1:30
On Open TX it has to say "R9M ACCESS" where you select external module type. IIRC only then the radio tries to use PXX2
I have the same, (second batch from "old"/non-2019 r9m), but the pcb is same with Pawel's black one. So both are old :S
can the R9M 2019 version be used with the original Taranis QX7 or will it only work with the newer QX7 ACCESS model thanks
If you flash it with FLEX or other NON-ACCESS fiurmware then yes

Sure, there is ACCST firmware available for R9M 2019 (and ACCESS receivers).

I was right! Improved buffer for 24 channels per ftame... X9d vs x9d 2019 need blust.. Differents in motherboard. Buffer...

Thanks for the insight, I am a bit frustrated with this system/switching to crossfire as soon as a new batch is in stock. Still based on how inconsistent mine have been I am considering adding a larger cap to one in the hope it will be more reliable at higher output levels..

@@EnglishTurbines So the general consensus is that the hardware of R9M and R9m/2019 is the same and FRSky are artificially limiting installing access compatible firmwares on non-2019 R9Ms ?
I also have a second-gen orange R9M (non-2019) - installing access firmware on it does not fail, per se, but it still does not work with any of the receivers that I have, no matter what firmware / version I flash on the receiver. Hence me asking....

I had purchaed Xlite Pro and in July 2019 I had also purchased R9MLite. At that time R9M Lite pro is not out yet. Can i use R9M Lite with my Xlite pro access transmitter.
Yes. I have exactly that combination. I had to upgrade the R9M Lite to the Access protocol, not a big deal, read the instructions on the FRSky website. I have it working with one of my quads. No problems so far. The Pro version of the R9M Lite module will support a higher transmit power, but offers no other advantage I am aware of.
I have the R9M Lite on my XLite Pro. I have updated everything for Access and now on OpenTX 2.3 (which just came out of beta). Works fine for me. The bind on power on is very handy. Access seems to work at range.

Don´t forget to tell the audience that they can throw their ACCST exclusive radio controllers into the bin if they want to use the new ACCESS module. They have to purchase a radio controlller which supports the ASSESS module!

The one thing i do not like about my original R9M is that if your powering it from both the radio and a separate battery the module does not turn off when you turn the radio off. A few times now i have forgotten to unplug the separate 2s battery that powers it, obviously not good if you leave it like that for a long time. I think they should have included a solid state power switch inside the unit that cut the power from the external battery once the radio was powered off. Is it still the same on the 2019 model?
I busted a 2s battery because of this. I made an Nimh replacement so I didn't have to sorry about it. Just a long list of issues with this bad product

On the plus side all of my frsky radio gear is stable and I just flash once and forget about it forever. No access but meh, if frsky 2.4 was good enough for so long r9 flex as it is will probably do the job too.
I have original R9M and four mm receivers from original 'DISCOUNT OFFER' batch. never used, flashed or bound them as was waiting until I felt competent enough for flying further than half a field. My taranis is flashed with 01/2019 2.2.3 flex. So, in your opinion will this still work? is that what you use? Thanks in advance
@@retrodudefpv yeah nothing is going to stop working. I'm just going to make sure I have local copies of the firmware. I don't plan to switch away any time soon and I'm really not concerned.
As far as the updates are its a solid 900mhz system. It won't stop being that without updates.
@@frasersteen Yes, if I get my R9 setup to work soon, then If I were to do any further upgrades, it would be a new radio and keep the frsky for the R9 setup and anything else I've already bound to it. Thanks for the info

D8 is only a 2.4GHz. R9M is 868/915MHz

Paweł Spychalski you mean there is no D8 for ACCESS so this receiver that I have ( the Taranis QX7 ACCESS ) won’t be able to work with the EMAX Hawk that only uses D8. Is that correct?
