In this video, I will compare the two cities of Lagos and Nairobi against 8 metrics. Infrastructure, social amenities, weather, cost of living, recreation opportunities, food, safety and economy. By the end of this video I will tell you which city, between Lagos and Nairobi is more livable.
1. Infrastructure.
Both cities have mega construction planned, in progress and some already completed. Lagos has The Lekki Deep Sea Port, The 156km Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway, The construction of new international airport terminals in Lagos Airport, Eko Atlantic and Lagos Light Rail. Nairobi is not behind with Konza Technology City, The LAPSSET Corridor Program, Kenya Standard Gauge Railway, Nairobi Mombasa Highway expansion project, the proposed pinnacle towers, Northlands City, the Nairobi Expressway project, Tatu City and the complete Thika Superhighway. Both cities have nice international Airports but in terms of efficiency and physical development Nairobi’s JKIA easily outshines Lagos Murtala Mohammed International Airport. However in terms of traffic the Lagos Airport enjoys more numbers.
Now let’s compare the skylines. Nairobi seems to have more skyscrapers than Lagos. Lagos is more spread out which I think doesn’t serve Lagos well. Nairobi’s huge skyscrapers are really giving Lagos a run for its money. Both cities have big malls but you can’t compare any mall in Lagos to Nairobi’s Two Rivers. Nairobi may be smaller but seems to be more developed, modern and organized. Lagos existing infrastructure and the scope of its ongoing and proposed projects are slightly behind Nairobi and therefore for this round, Nairobi wins.
2. Social Amenities.
Lagos is a megacity at over 30 million in population. Nairobi on the other hand is considerably smaller at 5 million. Nairobi has a lower population density which is 43.22% lower than Lagos. Accessibility of social amenities is therefore better in Nairobi. Nairobi’s smaller population means less strain on the available resources and that is why Nairobi is the winner here.
3. Weather.
Nairobi’s climate is cool and temperate due to high altitude even though it straddles the equator (average is 23° / 14°). Temperatures in Lagos are hot and oppressively humid (average 32° / 24°) Some people might prefer the cold climate of Nairobi and others might prefer the heat of Lagos. It’s a subjective topic. In my opinion Nairobi definitely wins this round.
4. Cost of Living.
Consumer Prices in Lagos are 4.25% higher than in Nairobi (without rent)
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Lagos are 92.47% higher than in Nairobi
Rent Prices in Lagos are 356.53% higher than in Nairobi.
Restaurant Prices in Lagos are 3.25% lower than in Nairobi
Groceries Prices in Lagos are 21.88% higher than in Nairobi
Local Purchasing Power in Lagos is 71.64% lower than in Nairobi
In Nairobi, you pay first month, last month and one month deposit to move into a rental unit. In Lagos, you have to pay 1 - 2 years upfront.
5. Recreational Opportunities.
Lagos is a concrete jungle with little greenery. Nairobi is the Green City in Sun with a lot of greenery and even a forest (Karura Forest) within the city limits.
Lagos being a seaside city has many beautiful beaches unlike Nairobi which is located in the Kenyan Highlands. Nairobi though has a national Park within its limits which I think is quite unique. Both cities have beautiful recreation parks and museums.
Lagos has many higher end nightclubs than Nairobi and Nigerians dress up when they go out. Kenyans are very casual and frankly dress badly.
Lagos wins this round.
6. Food.
If you are a fan of spicy food and seafood then Lagos is the place to be. Nairobi food can be somewhat bland but this is a very subjective topic. Personally I believe the cuisine of Nigeria is simply better. Lagos wins for this one.
7. Safety.
Both of the cities suffer the problem of insecurity but according to official sources, Nairobi is safer with a crime index of 58 against Lagos 65. You are safer walking at night in Nairobi than in Lagos. I guess the Nairoberry label is not accurate comparatively speaking. But it is best to be cautious and alert when in both cities. I declare a draw for this round.
8. Economy.
Lagos is 4 - 5 times the size of Nairobi in both population and physical size. This makes Lagos more rife with opportunities but also more competitive since you are competing with more people. The richest man in Africa, Dangote, is from Nigeria. Nollywood, Africa’s No1 and worlds Number 3 movie industry worth billions of dollars is headquartered in Lagos African Entertainment capital.
All the biggest African Musical artists reside in Lagos they are ranked in Forbes the likes of Davido /Don jazzy/ Wizkid, Burnaboy and many others are very well off financially and outsell every other African artist by a huge margin. I needn’t say more Nigerian Entertainment is enjoying world attention at the moment.

Absolutely NONE. No West African city beats Nairobi on many fronts. Infrastructure topping the list. About food, the fact that they have spicy food does not make it better than the so labelled "bland". Not everyone likes spicy so that is relative based on individuals. Dressing too..relative too. As a Ghanaian living in Kenya I have been in the country for 3 months without using cash or card money at any moment.
I only use m-pesa which is mobile everywhere in the country

I had a guest from Lagos in my house in Nairobi. Being his first time in Kenya he called his wife with excitement complimenting Nairobi with it's ever present power, hot water bath, easy means of communication, M-Pesa network transactions, he went on and on but his greatest relief came from lack of generator noise and street noise.
I have never been to Lagos but from his conversation with wife I came to realize that Nairobi is at another level.

I've been to lagos and Accra more than twice and to be unbiased, It's an insult to compare Nairobi City with any west African city. I Can't say the Quality of life, Public amenities and Security are very good in Nairobi, but in Lagos.. Lord have mercy! Kind people in both cities though!

While Nairobi was ranked among the best (globally) by expats, Lagos was ranked among the least liveable cities in the world by UN.
If you prefer quality, then go live in Nairobi. If quantity is your preference, Lagos is your city. I agree Lagos is more soulful and with indigenous African feel. Nairobi is sophisticated with a western city look and feel. Food in Lagos is better. Lagosians the speak Pidgin , Nairobians speak Sheng....Matatu culture in Nairobi is lit!! Lagos is a dream place for entrepreneurs...Holiday makers should go to Nairobi. Lagos size and population can overwhelm you if you used to public order, easy access to services and enjoy outdoors....none is present in Lagos. In my opinion comparing both cities based on infrastructural development,% level of education, technology etc rather thank food would have made more sense ,good work though . If you ask me , Nairobi is several years ahead of most if not all cities in Africa and bearing in mind that Kenya doesn't have natural resources like Oil and Gold ,I commend the it's leadership for ensuring Kenya is up in the face of Africa

Lagos residents are forced to plan for more than half of their lifetime without electricity yet you then argue the city remains a better place to reside in compared to Nairobi. Interesting.
This is a very different topic. That is why I said one to one mapping. Nigerians already outlived their government. Electricity is understandable that our government has failed us but Lagos is stinkingly rich place with more job opportunities than Nairobi. Individuals are doing well and could afford generator right. Unicoms like Paystack, flutterwave, Andela, Interswich, GTB, Zénith bank, UBA, Access are all here, all these banks are in Kenya. It is freaking 20 million people and Kenya is just 50 million as a whole.

Some 2 interesting facts that the video got wrong.
1) Nairobi has more dollar millionaires (6,200) than Lagos (5,400). It is seemingly easier to get rich in Nairobi than in Lagos both in gross and per capita terms.
2) In terms of business competitive edge and dynamism, the economic complexity index (ECI) is the best indicator. It is a hollistic measure of the productive capabilities of large economic systems like cities. Kenya is ranked at 87th while NGR is at 140. Given that both Lagos and Nairobi are the primary cities of their countries, the national ECIs are more influenced by and reflective of either, so you be the judge of that.
No Lagos alone has an economy bigger than the whole of Kenya and a higher per capita at city and national level 2,300 Nigeria and >$5'500 for Lagos. However anything that concerns government responsibilities will always be poorly ranked concerning Nigeria, such is the state of the malaise. If you look at the people of Lagos they are easily among the most competitive and successful anywhere, while Kenya is dependent on foreigners. The main commercial city is Lagos but not the national capital like Nairobi, this is Abuja. As for dollar millionaires I very much doubt this is the correct figure just as I notice they got the figures of billionaires in a comment quoting African wealth, wrong. In Lagos I can easily count 6 from Forbes and other sources. Both countries should be concentrating on the poor and less concerned with the wealthy

I'll complement what someone already said in the comments. Nairobi was ranked 1st as expats city of choice in Africa and 12th in the world. That was 20121. In 2023, Expats Essentials Index by InterNations still ranks Nairobi as No. 1 overtaking South Africa which had a temporary stay at the top in 2022. There is no way Lagos would beat Nairobi.

The only thing that shocked me in Lagos is the lack of electricity Kenyans are so spoilt we have electricity 24/7 and the internet speed is very fast which I did not experience in Lagos.I loved Lagos because it had a true feeling of Africa.And the food was true African food.

Having dollar millionaires does not mean you are wealthy. Russia has tons of billionaires but the population lives in poverty. I think the best way to compare is middle class population. Shopping, tech, roads, etc. I’ve been to many cities but to Lagos. All I know is that you can get any kind of food in Kenya, Nairobi has the most headquarters of international companies than any city in Africa. Paying for services like electricity, water, cell phone and other Sevices is done from home from anywhere through M-PESA. We are the leader in tech. Hello bro, I have to congratulate you for this good work but then, things like 'food' and 'clothing' cannot be used to gauge cities, instead, you should have used other parameters like 'technology' and 'water supply'. Food and clothing's are very subjective parameters, they depend on where one was born and brought up. To me, for instance, I don't like spicy food, again, when going out for a night club, one is going to loose themselves in the frenzy dances and other enjoyments, so I would rather dress casually, the Kenyan style, not official. To dance well, one should be in casual dresses.

I am sorry to sound so crude but when people do not know what they are talking about you just have to be upfront with them. I have lived in both cities and being a Nigerian I can say without any doubt that Nairobi is way way ahead of Lagos. Nairobi is well planned cleaner, no power problem, better roads, much more beautiful than Lagos. Things work in Nairobi. They do not work in Lagos. Look at internet. Can you compare the speed and reliability of internet between Nairobi and Lagos. No comparison . Nairobi wins by a wide margin. You should visit both cities and interview the expatriates living in both cities to get an unbiased opinion. Yes I agree in on area where Lagos is better and that is the night life but how do you enjoy the night life with all the security issues in Lagos. Haven't you heard about kidnappings in Lagos. A friend of mine who is a recently retired judge in the Nigeria had his son kidnapped twice in Lagos . In America when you make ridiculous statements such as these they ask you " man what have been smoking ".

The fact that Nigerians flock Nairobi, and not the other way round, speaks volumes. However, Nigerians have a habit of taking advantage of the temperate, kind, and laid back character of Nairobians. It is very hard to find a Nigerian in Nairobi who does legit business. They are drug dealers and consters.
You can not compare an inland city and an ocean coast city. Right away the weather is different. Compare Lagos to Dar es Salaam, Cape Town, Accra and the like. Inland to inland and Coastal City to Coastal city.
Or mombasa city

Lagos as a state is richer than the country of kenya, kenya should be compared with somalia not Nigeria.
Nairobi is 696 km2, Lagos is 999.6 km2 if you exclude the water (43% larger). With water it's 1.171 km2 (59% larger).
So the cities are not that far off sizewise. I imagined Lagos to be much larger seeing that their urban population is more than three times that of Nairobi's. Dar es-Salaam is in fact larger than Lagos.
Lagos is at least 3500 km2 which makes it at least 5 times bigger than Nairobi!

@@kr3539 google Lagos state size and not Lagos Size. When you google lagos you get the size of just Lagos Island ! Lagos state as a whole is 3500km2! I am Nigerian and live in Lagos so I have first hand information about my state.
Kenya won in most of the parameters yet you conclude that Lagos wins?? Was there need for the analysis anyway?? But we understand you are Nigerian. And is food really a parameter?? People have their preferences, tastes and culture. Mind you Kenya also has any type of food found in any part of the world.

For me Nairobi is better than Lagos. Nairobi is a bit cleaner and organized than Lagos. It has a CBD though African standard compared to Lagos which is far behind than cbd of Nairobi. Nigeria is called economic giant in Africa but this only pertains to gdp nominal but if we measure the wealth of Nigeria in terms of gdp per capita Nigeria ranks only 21st in the entire African continent.
