As Tanzanian i can agree to some point on what youre saying because i lived in Dar and i visited Nairobi regularly, these two cities and people can not be compared, Nairobi is more modern and advanced technologically and socially way far than Dar, Dar is full of coastal people who are much slower and Swahili Natives, Nairobians can only be compared by people from Northen Tanzania, Arusha and Kilimanjaro. Dar is beautiful city and is growing fast but Nairobi is on another level, and it is the people makes that difference.
@amarido12 Asante ndugu yangu...he should've compared Dar with Mombasa. Same speed 😂 Dar has a life, and its healthier;less stress. Whats the rush? The Kiswahili sanifu unifies the whole country. But the white man can't get those subtle points. ❤ from 🇰🇪

Honestly, this analysis tell more about you as a person than Dar and Nairobi as cities. First, you have to understand about the diversity and cultural dyanmics and differences between people of Nairobi and Dar. SWAHILI.. if you want to live or work in a country you have to atleast try to accomodate that country culture. You cant complain about people not speaking english as if is some accomplishment, when you come as a tourist you will get some guidance but if you want to work and live in Tanzania as a Brit, learn some Swahili and be respectful. MUSIC... Tanzania love more their own music "Bongo Fleva".. again dont expect Tanzanians to love your international music more than their own.. I know you try to be honest, but you come a bit less considerate, as if the only way to be developed in your lens is for Africans to be more like Westerners.. Respect African culture and our ways of life.
Scream it LOUDER to the kn*b ‘ead at the back row!! Then the pleb’s got the cheek to chide how Tanzanians choose to enjoy their hard earned money. If they wanna add sparkles and fireworks to their bottle of brandy or D’Ussé then who is it hurting? It’s the “I’m better than you because I’m Bri’ish mate” mentality that really grind my f***** gears! If you don’t like it here fella, jog on then!!!
Firstly, my analysis was predicated on an empirical examination of the tangible differences between Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam, rather than a mere reflection of personal predilections. The diversity and cultural dynamics of both cities were meticulously considered, and highlighting these differences does not inherently diminish respect for either locale. Regarding linguistic integration, while it is undoubtedly crucial to assimilate and respect the local language and culture, it is also a pragmatic observation that English serves as a lingua franca in many global business milieus. This acknowledgment does not seek to undermine the significance of Swahili but rather to elucidate the practical challenges faced by expatriates and tourists. On the subject of musical preferences, my observations were not predicated on an expectation that Tanzanians should favor international music over their indigenous genres. Instead, it was a recognition of the distinct cultural predilections that imbue each city with its unique atmosphere. The objective was to provide a nuanced and balanced perspective, not to insinuate that development is synonymous with adopting Western paradigms. It is essential to respect and honor African culture and ways of life, and this principle underpins my analytical endeavors. The analysis was intended to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural tapestries inherent in both cities.
@@ArchitectRussell with that egoistic approach u r simply an idiot! Coming to a culture that has accepted u n trying to impose ur values! What r u doing in Dar why not going back to the UK of Brexit?
So in short Nairobi wants to be a European/American city while Dar wants to be an Asian city... I think its down to original influence, how the cities started
Good day sir, I am Kenyan, I have recently been to Dar es salaam. Dar is more like Mombasa, the culture, religion, speed, language, beaches and all. Nairobi life, everything is fast, speed is everything. Life is more affordable in Dar than in Nairobi. Tanzanians don't trust Kenyans at once but once they do, they have proved to be very wonderful people. Kenyans are generally very aggressive just like Nigerians. I like Dar very much. I enjoyed the video, mostly true except for the salaries part...
@@ArchitectRussellThe salary part (and some others) was so weird. Simply ignorant. You need to learn about the ways of a particular people and find out why they do what they do before you comment. Ask questions, don't draw uninformed conclusions. These countries/cities are not trying to be England. So they don't need to meet your standards. They are what/who they are. Up to you to experience them and not to want to experience yourself in them. That's what makes this world diverse and beautiful. For me not a very good video because one moment you completely trash one of them then you come back and say they are slightly different. One of the most confused comparison videos.
As a Kenyan who works and lives in Nairobi plus regularly travels for work to Dar, you have given an accurate unbiased opinion. One thing though as you say Nairobi really needs to improve on street lighting, large sections of the city where the streetlights though there don't work even on major highways, an area where the county government has really failed.
When comes to language you shouldn't complain. You're In a city of Swahili speaker, why should they speak English? why can't you bother to learn proper Swahili. That's like asking native London residents to speak arabic or Swahili when English is their native language. I appreciate Nairobi speaks English but you can't complain about Dar people not speaking English when you're fully aware Swahili is their language. I don't hear this narrative with Chinese, or Japanese but only when comes to African languages it seems no respect. If you want to live in a city of people who speak English then do that but don't go to non-english speaking cities and ask for privilege of them to speak to you in English. You should appreciate the fact that they are even trying too. Cut the entitlement.
@@ArchitectRussell It is not a city of Swahili speakers. Mombasa they priorities Swahili far much more than Nairobi does. Yes they do speak Swahili but English is their default language. Meanwhile Dar is a Swahili city to the core. If you've lived long enough in Tanzania you should understand that simple difference. You can try to be funny and all sort of laughing emojis but you need to show respect to our language. I'm not trying to be mean but it's disgraceful to try speak foreign language to a country you fully know Swahili is their default language and then complain why they don't speak good English.
@@mtatapharaoh5174 No one is saying don't learn English, what I'm saying no one should complain about people not speaking English in predominant non English speaking city. beside if you think you can only survive with English in China alone, go ahead and try it alone and see.

Even your president makes an effort to speak English. It bridges communication. Its not hard. Its mostly illiteracy as most schools here teach English.
My thoughts as well. He would not go to France or Portugal and state the same. That bit was unnecessary but I think he already knew that. Based on how described Tanzanians making those facial expressions he must really dislike living in Tanzania

Dar is more comparable with Mombasa being at the sea level & near the equator hence very hot and humid. Kenyan coastal people are also very chilled and move at a snail's pace compared to Nairobi folk or watu wa bara. Nairobi would best be compared to Addis maybe imho. As a "Nairobian", I see the problems Dar has that you have highlighted as opportunities🤑. Nairobi is currently very competitive & expensive for avg kenyan business person.
Arusha nayo it's not situated well to outdo Dar despite elevation. Btw Lagos, Dakar and Abidjan have the same all year round heat and humidity of Dar. Imo I think the heat and humidity works against worker's productivity. Every time I go to Kenyan coast (Mombasa, Kilifi, Malindi), I can't imagine living a long time in that heat. Although we can learn a lot from a city like Singapore which also has terrible heat & humidity. The advantage of kina Dar es Salaam and other coastal cities is logistics. Btw TZ has bigger untapped potential than Kenya. It has more resources, more land, more arable land and higher population. I think the ONLY advantage that Kenya has right now is human capital. But I would argue that human capital outweighs everything else if your competition is far behind.
@@Edyi_44 Not in the near-term. Assuming no major shock to both economies (e.g. Covid) Tz's economy will grow at a slightly higher growth rate than Ke in the next decade according to W.B. and Afdb projections. Still the difference is small enough that Kenya will be ahead maybe until the 2040s. Tz's economy isn't as formalized & their infrastructure spending is lower. But like I said with the right direction, the country has potential to be bigger than Ke. It has way more resources, way more land, way more people. Also it's extremely cheaper to produce anything in Tz than Ke. Cheap agricultural products will price out Kenyan farmers (given EAC is a free market) and cheaper safaris will attract more tourists to Tz. Unfortunately, the current policy makers in Ke aren't acknowledging this so that they can shift the kenyan economy to manufacturing.

@section8ight174 You are a fool , I'm talking about Wild animals , does Dar have a national park ? Should I educate you that the meaning of vibrance in the English dictionary is full of energy and life , The UA-camr has said it himself Dar is a boring city with slow people and basically nothing to do other than going to the beach , that's the exact opposite of the word vibrance. Vibrance is having a city so green that it's nick named the green city in the sun , yet so Morden that it's crowned the most developed city in East Africa. Having a public urban park like Uhuru park in the middle of Nairobi CBD screams vibrance, a city full of life , in both Morden and natural aspects. I saw a Tanzanian UA-camr called Bertin being shocked by Nairobi's malls ( esp Two rivers mall) and the streets of CBD it even got cringe at times lol. I'm not even surprised to see the number of tourists coming to Nairobi is twice that of Dar 2.4 Million and 1.8 Million respectively. shouldn't that independently answer the question of which city is more vibrant
In Summary: If you like more of a city-vibe with more international population, then Nairobi, but if you like more of a slower-paced-relaxed-life with a beach, then Dar-Es Salaam! It really depends on who you are, and what you like!

Dar is beautiful city and is growing fast but Nairobi is on another level, and it is the people makes that difference.

Halafu kabla ya kuja Tanzania hamna aliyekuwa akimjua kwenya Architecture! Tanzania imemjenga ila anainyea sasa!

Thanks man. Yeah I plan on visiting Mombassa soon. Should be fun!
Kenyans are completely different to Nigerians. Stop twisting things.
Isn’t Nairobi a city of Swahili speakers too? 😂
@@ArchitectRussell Nairobi is not a city of Swahili speaker only Dar it is

You can try to be funny and all sort of laughing emojis but you need to show respect to our language. Dar people are happy and very relaxed. Infact this is a happy nation. We move forward happily and together. Dar football stadiums are always full as ordinary people have surplus to spend on entertainment.
We walk fast coz we ain't lazy.
Walk cautiously guy. Mwendapole hajikwai
Why do u think I prefer Nairobi?
The way you talk shows it all. You like concrete jungles maybe@@ArchitectRussell
Nairobi is A1 from language, structural designs, vibe n fashion almost Next to US
One day Dar es salaam will have those structures of Nairobi, but until the end of the world Nairobi will remain with no beach🤣
Nairobi don't need Beach. We go to Mombasa, malindi and Lamu for holidays.
also mombasa and some coastal cities in kenya are coming up.
Am a kenyan and i was shocked when in dar and i wanted to search a place and there is no google street view i hope they have it now because every city should have it, in kenya even most village towns have google street view
No actually I checked something yesterday didn’t work. They are weird with photographs here.
@ArchitectRussell so weird
Nairobi now is on fire
Yes for better. WE ARE RESTRUCTURING.
Good analysis. Karibu Kenya
Thank you for sharing your experience, I find that interesting and helpful as a Nigerian
That’s great. Hope to come to Nigeria soon.
@@arc.muhammaddunoma7734 As Nigerian in Dar you will have a very hard time connecting with locals as they have a very negative views in Nigerians, some of your people always comes up with some dumb shit and ruin for others
Nairobi is way ahead for sure. Dar is to be compared to a village town in Kenya
@@tomnethan757 utoto mamako. Dar is a village mr crackhead
Ushawahi tembea tz...
It's stupid comments like these which make Tanzanians reacts halafu mnaanza kusema we hate you!
Which village in Kenya? Comments like these are made by people who have never left their countries...
@@Summertm if you have been to Kenya you would have never commented this nonsense
Compare Nai with Arusha! Same style of Lunacy 😂
In fact once the infrastructure in TZ catches up to Kenya, we will fall behind in tourism.
@@singlepointoffailure9799 How will Tanzania's infrastructure catch up with Kenya's yet road connectivity in Ke is three times that of tz.
Please dig more about Dar es salaam. The biggest water park in East Africa, peace of Dar City
We have better infrastructure
We are Tanzanian we speak swahili. Don`t force us to speak english. Respect our language. Slow is our culture. Dar is hot do you want us to boil?
The HEAT in Dar though! I refer Nairobi on that front
Dar is vibrant, whereas Nai is vigorous, if you didnt get enough of Dar vibrance, then Nai violence should get the best of you any time soon. And we all know arches are more beautiful than boxes. Peculiar taste!
😂 facts!! Sit tight & enjoy the ride ..
Having beaches is not being vibrant buddy 😂 beaches with terrible infrastructure is a menace , tourist will come for the beaches but experience slow service delivery, sub standard hotels and never ending blackouts , Nairobi is vibrant , tell me where in dar that you'll see buildings as tall as 47 floors share neighborhood with lions and zebras , upperhill and Nairobi national park literally share fences, that's vibrance, modernity and mother nature co existing.
@@Edyi_44 LOL, I don’t think sharing neighbourhoods with animals could be classed as vibrant, we got animals roaming about Dar, no issues! Having a VIBRANT beach culture is the one, can’t really compare it to the landlocked Nairobi and the animals don’t quite cut it I’m afraid . How many tourists are coming to Nairobi specifically to see the wildlife 😂 cut it out dude you already know we got the BEST of both worlds? When’s the last time you saw anyone rushing about by the beach? Sort it out dude!
@@section8ight174 when we say animals we don't mean cats, dogs, donkeys, snails ...okay???
Nice video
Good to hear in Tanzania clubs they play more local music, very good to the generation to keep their roots
I'm Kenyan, been to both cities they have a different vibe, its like comparing New York to LA both very different pace and vibe.
we dont want western architectural designs, we are africans not euoropeans

Compare Dar with Meru town please...😅
Will compare to mombassa soon
Next time do comparison between Lusaka and Harare
Ok I will 👍🏽
In Summary: If you like more of a city-vibe with more international population, then Nairobi, but if you like more of a slower-paced-relaxed-life with a beach, then Dar-Es Salaam! It really depends on who you are, and what you like!
Kenyahas beaches too!! Mombasa is the option for those who want the beach and Mombasa is developed though not to Nairobi standards!!
The skyline in Nairobi is breathtaking.
The pedestrisn pavements however is an abomination to life and a harakiri to your toenail😭
Lot of missing pavements in Dar - usually have to walk on road
@@ArchitectRussell So all 100 Kilometres of BRT System that have sidewalks you dont see them or what are sidewalks to you. Look at all Morogoro road,Msimbazi, Kawawa road, Kilwa road, Sam nujoma road, Mwenge morocco road, Coco beach road all of them have wide sidewalks. And other still being constructed with the BRT system and you compare it with Nairobi that only the CBD has sidewalks while other posh areas like kilimani, westlands and upperhill have no sidewalks at all. We are still developing and we are not like you british people that you had to kill, steal colonize and slave other people to develop your country that by the way nowdays its decaying

Having a coastline just makes it better in its own .
There is Mombasa with a coast line and it is also developed enough to get a good standard of life.
Swahili was chosen as a Tanzanian national language after our independence, and we are Proud to have a language that is widely spoken in many other African countries, and internationally recognized. However, now with a lot of international schools in the country, our new generation is growing up to speak English more. My little nieces/nephews speak American English, they barely know Swahili. TZ may develop faster than you expect!
Kiswahili os Kenya's national language too!! English is Kenya's business language. Never undertsiod why Tanzanians like to dosconnect Kenya with Kiswahili. I bet you are clueless why TZ and Kenya picked Kiswahili as national languages. 😅
As a white Brit I've never had an issue in South Africa, Zambia or Tanzania. But the lack of card payments is a pain, (as a Westerner) and why are chips (fries) served with everything? South Africa is much better for card payments. I love that the bars are open so late in Dar though ;-)
Maybe because people are not in a rush to join the Babylon system? So you spend an extra 15 seconds to whip your wallet out and do what you’ve done since childhood, God forbid coz we are now super busy and inconvenienced 🤣 clown behaviour!
The point is if you add these 15 seconds from every transaction over a year you lose so much time. I don’t want everything to be slow as I want to do more of the things I love.
@@thebrokearchitect Then you end up at the pub wasting hours talking about things that don’t matter like footie lol what’s 15 seconds again?
I think you’re missing the point. Add up all the 15 seconds and you may get a whole day at the end of the year and you can read a great book 😊
@@thebrokearchitect Buddy, you are the one missing the point, we do waste plenty of time on a daily basis! Watching TV is a waste of time but we spend hours BINGE watching absolute CR*P everyday yet you are worried about 15 secs? 😂 I see what you mean but in the grand scheme of things, it’s minuscule!
You compared the two cities so well. Their urban planning especially for pedestrian is really crappy. The biggest difference is perharps the people and customer service, and you articulated that so well.
Both cities are both on par

Dar es Salaam is often considered more beautiful than Nairobi due to its coastal location, stunning beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. The city's location on the Indian Ocean offers picturesque waterfront views, a variety of water activities, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
