    Nice to see it performed with the whole orchestral and ballet together. I'm used to just the music . Imagine the cost to put this production on.

    Maravillosa presentación de esta gran ópera de Verdi. Su producción extraordinaria, porque lo transportan a uno a la grandiosidad de esa cultura milenaria que fue Egipto

    This scene as done by the Met is perfection. Aida is not my favorite opera but, if I were to take someone to his/her first opera, seeing the grandest scene of grand opera would make quite an impression. I saw this production at the Met and as many times as I have seen the triumphal scene, in different productions, it never grows old.

    The stage is so big that the dancers in back are slightly delayed in relation to those in front. This is because the sound takes 30 milliseconds to travel just 10 meters, which is enough to produce this effect. Anyway, it is a beautiful performance.

    I used to have a subscription to the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and as a loyal Philadelphian it would gall me whenever I would find myself sitting next to someone who would go on and on about how much better the Metropolitan was. But deep inside I had to agree, especially after seeing something like this. (Well, maybe not so much better but certainly richer.)

    @MrZeitun I checked again, just to make sure. They are on flats. And once I have to start from the very beginning, by flats I mean shoes that are soft all around and have the sole purpose of slipping. That's why they are called ballet slippers. For the past 150 years or so, women don't go on pointe with those shoes. If you really look you will see their toes are bent forward, so they are on demi-pointe. Yeah, there are 2 variants of tutus, the classical and the romantic.

    @adballet I think I have a good idea what points and tutus are. I happen to belong to the professional stage business by trade as a director. And one of the emotional highs of my life as a spectator was when I saw the Bolchoi, in Moscow, in 1971. It was totally conventional Russian ballet, but it was so beautifully done that it brought tears to my eyes. BTW, I have nothing against the ballet work done here per se, I just think it's totally out of touch wih modern opera staging.

    @MrZeitun The "cute" little ballet has been changed. The choreography was done by Ramatzky resident choreographer of ABT + former director of the Bolshoi. I don't know where you saw the "little" ballet dancers. I saw ballet dancers. BTW, I have no idea where you saw POINTE as NOBODY is on pointe here and much less in TUTUS. Although his video shows 2 horses, I counted 5 all together. The bad painting look is because this is a bad quality video, try going to the theater + actually seeing it live.

    @MrZeitun And I suggest that you take a good look at 6:12 and you will see that the same dancers are on flats using the technique on 3/4 pointe. None of them are on pointe. And to see a ballet company performing is completely different than an opera company. And the other production of Aida are NOT any better. But in any event, this choreography has been changed for Ramatsky's, as I said resident choreographer of ABT and former director of the Bolshoi.

  • @MrZeitun
    @MrZeitun 12 років тому +1

    @adballet I suggest you have a good look from 5:02 on. They ARE on points, several times. As for tutus they do wear what furiously look variants of said. And 2 horses or 5 horses, what difference does it make? This is beyond the point. My point is that the whole staging is conventional, pasteboard and out-of-date.

    @adballet You are quite a subborn person, sir. I challenge you to stop at 5:12 and again at 5:47 and tell me this not pointe technique. That they maybe flat at 6:12 does not change that they are on pointe a few times before. And do YOU have any idea how many different variants of the ballet tutus there are?
    Have it your way, and have a good day.

    @MrZeitun Asa matter of fact you have NO idea what pointe and tutus are. And 1971 was a long time ago. And I am not so sure how much directors in stage business know about pointe. Those are called tunics, not tutus. It qualifies nowhere as tutus. NOBODY is wearing point shoes, nor using pointe work. They are all on flats. And what is happening on stage is not really ballet. Some are character dances + some demi-charactere which need ballet dancers once ballet technique is used in the lower body.

    The Met at its worst. Everybody made out to look like a (poorly) animated Egytpian bas-relief. And they all look like they are going to sh... marble at the next major chord. Plus the mandatory two horses and the cute litlte ballet dancers in tutus and points, straight out of Degas.
    Such a great opera, such lack of imagination. This is not staging, this is reproducing paintings from an amphora. In this case, money ruins everything.
    Utterly ridiculous.
