The music of Wagner effects my mental state. I can't sleep for a week after having listened to Tannhauser. The music rings in my ears for the whole night.

By no means do I subscribe strictly to classic staging, but for the love of the gods, this production looks like it should take place on the "Star Wars" planet of Naboo. Everything from costuming to set is eye-gouging.
The set isn’t so bad, the costumes are bizarre and exaggerated. I’ve seen sets and costumes for Wagner’s operas that were even more ridiculous than these that they were positively hilarious
The 6,000 all-male student body at Brooklyn (NY) Technical HS used to be ushered into their massive auditorium for assembly programs to an instrumental version "Grand March" played on the giant pipe organ located to the left and below the stage. I was a 13-year old Freshman at the time and remember being in complete awe of the music and the spectacle of so many young men silently entering the room, one of the biggest auditoriums in NYC. I believe my reaction was the intended objective.
This is one of the most joyous choruses in all opera--the first word in both verses is "freudig" (joyful). Why does everyone look like they're singing the Verdi Requiem? Did Herzog decide to ignore the text and forbid them from smiling, or do they just hate being in those bizarre costumes? I felt particularly sorry for the men having to enter with their vision severely restricted by those helmets. Watch this scene from the mid-70's Bayreuth production to see a chorus thrilled to return to the beloved hall and have "Thuringia's Got Talent" back.
There is a significant difference between belcanto and wagnerian singing. An Italian will never be able to sing in German as Wagner intended to. The roots of tradition are way too strong regardless of the effort and Verdi is omnipresent in Italian minds. I don't mind, I simply understand.
@@zvonimirk.2233 You misunderstand my comment, which is not about singing styles at all. I said that they LOOKED like they were singing the Verdi Requiem, not that they SOUNDED like it. The staging of this scene goes completely against the music and the text. It's as if a director told the chorus in Act I of Traviata to look bored to death at Flora's party, or the Cypriotes to act like Otello sending the Turkish fleet to the bottom of the Mediterranean was no big deal.
@@bobzeschin3154 note the sketchy ear-holes ripped in the headresses to enable some faint echo of the orchestra to penetrate. Having taken part many a time in this tomfoolery, I assure you life is not made easy for singers in these stagings.
Glorioso. Menos mal que el,pasillo es largo.

hi, if the church is very long and the bride walks slow could this march be employed (with little cuts off) as wedding march? there exist an arrangement for pipe organ? thanks.
@shonnyno: Tell the bride to walk faster! If she walks slowly everyone will think she doesn’t want to marry the groom. Or has apprehension about the wedding night!!
Viscous = having a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid; having a high viscosity. Is that the word you were looking for. Are they all that sticky?

I saw this production in Baltimore back in the 90's. I really enjoyed it, but I do remember that the singing was second rate. The Baltimore Opera is now defunct.
This staging proves that a modernized, and somewhat stylized production can be done, while maintaining the flavor of the period and not making it look cartoonish, as so many modern productions do with Wagner.
This how an opera is SUPPOSED to be staged-in the time that it actually took place, NOT in a meth lab, circa 2001 w/ costumes from Forever 21 & The Gap!
You're kidding, right? This has nothing to do with the time it took place! White costumes everywhere? That would have never happened. Ladies in head dresses that look like horns? Nope! Knights with bird beak helmets? Absolutely not! This production is meant to be otherworldly, and not historical in the least.

That's the thing about Wagner: The music goes on forever while all this viscous stage action takes place.
