Today May 4, I accidentally stumbled upon the house where Schiller wrote this song, Schiller house, Leipzig, Germany. I was not aware when I visited Leipzig about this Symphony and the song before today, being a musician from India I rarely followed western classical. However today was magical and I am writing this comment travelling back Leipzig to Berlin and listening to this on youtube on RE train. Something has changed in me today after understanding the English meaning of this song plus the legendary music from Beethoven. I am one step closer to the creator. Thank you Schiller, Thank you Beethoven.
Okay , Ludwig , with your beautiful powerful music you made me think deeply of God in the realm beyond the stars and of out eternal life with him beyond this mundane material existence , and by doing so you brought tears to my eyes. Mission accomplished wonderfully , better than any preacher I have ever met could do so. Thank you , and I hope to see you there.
I would say that ¨A¨ human, named L.V.Beethoven has ever created. ¨We¨ just can appreciate this genious musician and composer. I've got nothing to do with his extraordinary talent.
My father was a huge fan of Beethoven and played his music all the time, he collected the records of Beethoven's music, but only when Karajan was conducting. In the 70ties I remember that Miguel Rios performed "A song of joy", and I told my dad how much I loved it. So he sat me down and we listened to the "original". Whenever I play that piece (on a record), my father is close by.
this is what the eu is about. to achieve this europe fought for ages. because of power over people, because of religion, because of forms of governments. we kinda figured it out, mostly, in basic terms, by the late 18xx. until some serb fucked up hardcore and sped up shit till we finally figured it out for real. at least the core has it figured. some like ex-soviets might still need another fuck around to find out.
I have lived with this and loved it for 70 years. I knew it was about joy but I had never been curious about the words because...well, I don't read and write so well. Seeing the translation is like seeing this piece in colour for the first time. I have to go away and do a bit of research and catch up on what I have been missing. Just when I thought it could not get any better. Wow!!
Yes, Schiller figured he knew more about "joy" than anyone so he wrote it in a poem. Who would appreciate it more than Beethoven, who knew so little of it.
You are right about this feeling of enjoying An die Freude in 3D or full colour for the first time. Although I don't know German, I have always wanted to enjoy the music with the original lyrics, and have even tried to listen to performances holding the German lyrics and their English translation printed side by side on a sheet of paper, but this is completely different. Feeling so happy! 😇
Before Schiller called it "to joy," he wanted to call it "to freedom." Not many have this in mind, but it is important to understand that joy at the end is the subleme result of ultimate freedom.
This is, to my opinion, the most honest with no exaggeration and clear interpretation of the music. I can repeat listening to this for eternity and don’t get bored..!
Just try and imagine, that the man who wrote this was, stone deaf. Not only, could he imagine what it would sound like, he would never get to hear it performed by an orchestra. That is dedication, and utter genius. To be that driven. But it is so sad, at the same time. People use the word genius nowadays, so flippantly, but this is what true genius is.

Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt
Who managed the big hit?
Wem der große Wurf gelungen
To be a friend's friend
Eines Freundes Freund zu sein
Whoever has won a devoted wife
Wer ein holdes Weib errungen
Mix in his cheers
Mische seinen Jubel ein
Yes, whoever has a soul
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
Being calls on the earth
Sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund
And those who have never been able to do so, steal
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
Crying out of this bond
Weinend sich aus diesem Bund
All beings drink joy
Freude trinken alle Wesen
At the breasts of nature
An den Brüsten der Natur
All good, all bad
Alle Guten, alle Bösen
Follow her trail of roses
Folgen ihrer Rosenspur
She gave us kisses and vines
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben
A friend tested in death
Einen Freund, geprüft im Tod
pleasure was given to the worm
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben
And the cherub stands before God
Und der Cherub steht vor Gott
Happy, happy as his suns, his suns fly
Froh, froh wie seine Sonnen, seine Sonnen fliegen
Happy as his suns fly
Froh wie seine Sonnen fliegen
Through heaven's magnificent plan
Durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan
Run your course, brothers
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn
Run your course, brothers
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn
Joyful, like a hero to win
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen
Like a hero to win
Wie ein Held zum Siegen
Run your course, brothers
Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn
(Run, brothers, your path)
(Laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn)
Joyful, like a hero to win
Freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen
Like a hero to win
Wie ein Held zum Siegen
Joyful, joyful, joyful like a hero to win
Freudig, freudig, freudig wie ein Held zum Siegen
Joy, beautiful spark of the gods
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Daughter from Elysium
Tochter aus Elysium
We enter, drunk with fire
Wir betreten feuertrunken
Heavenly ones, your sanctuary
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum
Your spells bind again
Deine Zauber binden wieder
What fashion strictly divided
Was die Mode streng geteilt
all people become brothers
Alle Menschen werden Brüder
Where your gentle wing rests
Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt
Be embraced, millions
Seid umschlungen, Millionen
This kiss for the whole world
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt
Be embraced, millions
Seid umschlungen, Millionen
This kiss for the whole world
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt
Brothers, above the starry sky
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
A dear father must live there
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen
Brothers, above the starry sky
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
A dear father must live there
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen
You fall down, millions?
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Do you sense the Creator, world?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Above the starry sky
Über'm Sternenzelt
He must live above the stars
Über Sternen muß er wohnen

Karajan, perfeita execução desta Obra Celeste❤
The first time this was ever performing, on May 7th 1824, Beethoven was standing on the stage and by then, he was completely deaf.
Beethoven must have still been able to envision and hear his creation in his mind and the essence of his soul!
I never gotten tired of the piece goose 😅I everytime.tearfull happiness every time 💖
