One of our NCOs I deployed with was just hideous. On our trip back home from our deployment to Afghanistan, we were all on the plane. One of my junior troops was sitting in front of her on the plane. As soon as we took off, he turned around to her and asked, “so, how does it feel to be ugly again?” I don’t think I’ve laughed harder in my life. I had to go in front of the commander and answer for my troop. It was worth it.

Sand blindness is a real thing. The desert can make the most unattractive ladies a 7 or 8 in a very short period. Sea blindness is also quite common. It (sea blindness) is most common in Marines and Sailors. Unfortunately for me, I've been stricken with both forms of blindness (USMC 2003-2007). Luckily, as soon as I got back to civilization the symptoms subsided rather quickly.
The VA doesn't recognize this illness, so I want to bring awareness to it. The regret and shame I feel for some of my decisions back then will haunt me forever. Sand and sea blindness both need to be taken seriously. If you have any friends or family that suffered or currently suffer from this, try to help them get through it... they need your support.
