Iron Pipe Shelves DIY

- How to build a live edge office shelf using a live edge hardwood cherry slab and industrial black pipe mounting hardware.
This project started with a slab of cherry hardwood that I got flattened at my local hardwood dealer. I chose to have it flattened as it saved me a ton of time and I have already shown the process of flattening larger slabs with a router sled in past videos.
Once the slabs were flattened I had to add a strip to each shelf to make them the depth that the customer wanted. The live edge bark was removed with a hammer and sander as I did not want to do an epoxy finish which is the best way to keep bark on a live edge piece.
The shelves were finished with 3 coats of general finishes arm-r-seal, my go to finish for hardwoods.
The shelves are mounted using black plumbing pipe as the hardware. All the pipe is 1/2" black pipe cleaned using acetone and steel-wool. Once the pipe was cleaned I assembled and finished with past was to prevent any rusting.

The shelves look awesome. It really stands out with the finish applied.
Great job Tyler!!
Thanks for sharing
I love these shelves!! Not floating, but still a fabulous looking shelf. Will be adding one of these babies to my bathroom. Thanks for another great video.
Love the way Cherry looks! I don't see as much of it around here.
Great work!
They look very nice love the contrast between the cast pipe and wood great job tyler
Nice project Tyler! Thanks for sharing the video with us.😎JP
Really great build Tyler. I love to see the grain pop when a good finish is applied. Good job!
Thanks Becky!
Great looking shelves!!
I really learned alot with this video! Thank you for the explanation. I am just starting this project, now, with confidence! Thank you, thank you
I think that your title to this video accurately describes this shelves.
Thanks for the video.
Awesome job Tyler! 👍👊
Read the card. Dope build, loved that Arm R Seal.
I have a ton of live edge red oak. I think you just gave me an idea Tyler. Thanks!
nice, i was looking for super easy shelves, and i think i have found them. thanx. the others were talking about jeg something and acting like that was so easy. i guess to make hiding holes and to drill in sideways???ahhh that is not easy! and it requires special tools.so thankyou again! 1:29
I gotta say Tyler you do a great job of producing your videos, keep them coming.
Thanks Bruce, glad you enjoy them!
I like that you showed using the live edge on the front to establish a line (the engineer in me would call it a datum reference) to determine the depth of the shelf.
This place is as neat as an operation theater!
Bravo , super job
Very Very nice.
I like that look a lot. Been dreaming of a desk with the vertical supports (legs and shelves) being that black pipe. Thankfully I have a neighbor who can actually do woodworking so I can commission something when I'm ready that will look nice instead of my "I guess it works?" approach.
I would say not floating since you can see what supports the shelve. However nice looking shelves never the less.
Seems to be the general response and I agree!
Beautiful job bro 👍
Thanks man!
Tyler G, those exact same pipes and holders make great Grab Bars. I have done this to to my center hall way closet. Here I have a trap door to go under the house. However, for safety reasons. I made my own Grab Bars and saved money. One tip, You can use as a gasket (old car tire inner tubes) to give a better surface to the wall plaster inside . Oh, about your shelf, if you put one bar going side ways, your shelf would double as a grab bar. I used Gorilla glue to give my grab bar a good lasting grip.
Floating shelves are about as overdone as French cleat storage walls. Thanks for not making them floating, ha. Great build!
Love me some Arm-R-Seal as well, love how it pulled the grain out of that cherry! Sweet project, Tyler. I'm also in the "not floating" camp, they're installed with shelf brackets, cool brackets, but brackets none the less.
Nice!!!👍👍👍
Great job man!
Nicely done, Tyler!
Thanks Dave!
I read the notes!!
Looks great--not floating.
These are beautiful. I really like the dimensions - the 1/2" pipe looks industrial tough but not too bulky. What I can't tell is how long are the pipes and how deep is the shelf. Thanks!
Yes Mate! I do read them.....
What sort of wax did you use on the iron pipes?
Nice, now my wife wants me to build some for the boys room. Where did you get the piping for that?
Congrats on the new baby. Crib build video coming soon haha.
Can't you do a review of the Mirka sander?
They seem like the best out there
Cherry project!
Cool!
The anchors didn't work for me... I had to attach a supportive board into the studs and mount the hardware to that. What anchors did you use? Mine stated 40lbs support...
keep on comming with the video's. Your voice is a releave compared to other video's were they shout out lout how cewl they are! Great job! 1:16
How'd you keep the shelves level? My wife want those kinds of shelves in our pantry and im having trouble getting them level while keeping the pipes tight.
DIYTyler, great video. I wish I had half the work shop and equipment you have. I'm considering adding live edge wood shelves behind my basement bar. Wondering where to go for the industrial black pipe hardware ? If anyone has a source they can share that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Most hardware stores, Home Depot etc will have the black galvanized pipe.
The only disadvantage of using a PU varnish (Arm R Seal) is that it might prevent the darkening of the cherry over time. It typically takes about 1 year after cutting for the cherry to reach its richest natural color. Until then a tree oil (walnut, tung, etc.) or a light wax will provide a nice finish and still allow the cherry to darken naturally - albeit slower. That said, I have never used PU on cherry, so please let me know if my concerns are or are not valid.
Hey Tyler, what wax dis you use on the pipes?
Really good work, and of course is diy but you have kinda industrial workshop, you have a machine for everything, is not for a regular guy wish only have a saw a drill and a few tools , You have a big shoo there, but excelent work
I read them!
Looks awesome. What type of wax did you use on the black pipe to prevent rust?
- Cay
Created by Cay minwax usually works pretty good
how much weight will those be able to hold, given they are with drywall anchors?
If each anchor is rated for 50lbs.... and 8 anchors per shelf, then technically 400 pounds. But I'd take at least 60% off the rating and use that number (so like 200-240lbs per shelf). That also depends on the structural integrity of the drywall and if it was nailed or screwed to the studs, and all that. So...
qual tipo de madeira ?
Where did u get that pipe in that color
Why not use buscuits on the butt joint for even stronger joint?
so you put wax on the pipe and fittings to prevent rusting. I am doing similar shelves in the bathroom, what wax should I use?
Hey Rob what did you end up using to seal them pipes
@@jfedermesser I just used flat black paint. Worked for me
Could u tell me the dimensions of the wood?
Not a floating shelf in my opinion, but a nice build nonetheless.
Nice project. The shelves would look more finished IMO if you would put screws (or at least glue screwheads) in the flanges at the wall.
Huh, not sure what video you watched but the flanges are held to the wall with screws.
Sorry for the unclear formulation. :-) When I look at a flange I usually would expect large, hex head industrial screws. While I know that you mounted the flanges with screws they seem to be hidden in the shadow if you look from the side.
Maybe it's only me being so used to the picture of a flange with heavy screws that for me your shelves seem to magically hold to the wall without any "visible" attachment. ;-)
I like the shelves, Tyler! I love the contrast in the black iron pipe and the cherry. I’m not sure if they’re floating or not. (Oh, and I did read the card. Ha ha)
Nice shelves! Can I ask why you chose pocket hole screws?
Square drive, self drilling easy to use and I have them all the time! Thanks for watching!
You should build your own shed instead. 2:53
The video would've been a lot cooler if you had built the shelves without power tools. Most of us common folks don't have an arsenal of all those kinds of tools.
Well, I do read them, but very seldom click. Nice build, but I would not call it floating.
lol! At last one person saw it!! Thanks for watching
First
Just flip the board so your chop saw can cut the remaining 🤓👩🏼🔧
The live edge doesn't make that possible.
Northbuilt Custom Carpentry
It is possible. Just line up the previously cut line after backing off (from your miter saw fence) on the live edge enough to allow for square
Yea, please don't do that.
Tyler G
Oh? May I ask why not?
What a waste of nice wood
Guess I should have burnt it.....yea, that would definitely be a better use.
