      Lexus has/had a customer support campaign for throttle bodies. They’re known to fail. $200 for the throttle body is nonsense, counter price is somewhere around double what he paid. And of course eBay used has the chance of also being bad or failing in the future.

      @@duaneafields I meant nonsense as in “you’re way underestimating parts costs”. I would open a customer support case and try and have it comped at a dealer, or at least ask for assistance, with it being a part that was involved in a customer support program.

    You and I both timed buying one of these just in time. Prices have exploded this year on GX460s and 470s. For some reason though, it's even worse on 4Runners, so I bet more and more folks are going to fall in love with the GX platform going forward.

    • @colesisler582

      You get a standard v8 and more off-road capability than you’ll ever need in the gx yet as of right now about 50% of used gxs’ are cheaper than 4Runners. The rest being equal. The newer gxs, gls and LCs are the modern suv enthusiasts rig IMO.

      We own 4 Toyota products. Two GX'S and two third gen 4runners. They have a combined 1,200,000 miles. We abuse our trucks. We change oil every 25,000 miles. Off the top of my head I can tell you we have replaces two radiators. Around 12 coil packs. Two C.V joints. A alternator, plugs and wires. We have never put a timing belt on either 4runner. None of them are sexy. They don't get great mileage and they don't have an abundance of power but they quit.

    I had VERY similar experiences to yours.
    Bought a 2012 SUV in 2020. Wanted something a little newer, however 2012 was the last year of this particular model of SUV. Got it from one state over. It was about an $80 Uber ride just to go pick it up. I too paid for a pre-purchase inspection. As you mentioned, it was well worth it. The vehicle was/is in great shape however, as you pointed out, more likely than not, when someone is planning on getting rid of a vehicle, they tend to stop doing any maintenance in the years or months leading up to it. So, fortunately while I have not had any engine or transmission problems, in the past 18 months, I have replaced the radiator, new shocks & struts all around (TWICE.......but that's another story), a set of tires, a new battery, power steering flush, brake flush, transfer case service, front and rear differential service, and recharging the A/C system. I'm sure I might be missing a thing or two that I've bought. Again, all 'routine maintenance', but it has added up to a very significant amount of money, as I prefer to go to the dealer. I have had absolute HORROR STORIES (over the years) by going to (supposedly) 5-Star (Google) reviewed independent 'mechanics' (places that have been in business for decades). You take the vehicle in for "A", and they fix "A", HOWEVER, along the way, they've broken "B", while fixing "A", that you don't even find out about until months later.
    Just 'do the work yourself' sounds good, HOWEVER, if you're NOT mechanically inclined (and have never been), do you really want to START, by messing with a highly computerized $15 or $25,000 vehicle? Not to mention, I have no 'place' or space to 'work on a car', I don't know anybody who knows about cars (to help me), and my nightmare is to mess something up, be unable to get it back together, and HAVE to walk into the dealer (and be at their mercy), with a bunch of parts in my hand, saying, "HELP!"
    LOVE my vehicle, and hopefully, after putting all this money into him, I can get 8 or 10 years of relatively problem free driving life out of him.
    I think your point is............(and MY advice to anyone looking to buy a used vehicle), unless you plan on doing the work yourself, it would be wise get a pre-purchase inspection done AT THE DEALER and to budget (at least) $2,000 for 'routine maintenance' items over the course of that first year or so. $2,000 is a lot of money (for a 9 to 5 person), but my radiator alone was $550 with parts & labor.

      That’s pretty close to what new 4Runners get interstate driving. Consistently topped out at 18.5(75-76mph). Because they’re shaped like a brick and really want for a 6th gear at 70+, their mpg does improve a few mpg if you keep them below 70mph.

    I have a 2017 premium with 60,000 miles (bought new) and zero issues, mechanically speaking. There are a few areas I dislike. The cabin seems a bit noisy if you press in on some of the plastics or while going over bumps. They creak and make a cracking sound, so to speak. Lexus has mostly fixed the issue (under warranty) by disassembling certain parts of the trim and adding felt or quiet tape. I only take it to Lexus for service. It’s pricey but I feel it’s worth it. Having a well tracked maintenance service record by the dealer will add value, should I ever sell it. Good video and looking forward to more.

    Nice video. I have the same vehicle; same year. My biggest complaint is a rough ride over anything other than a glass smooth highway. Engine is low on torque too, so the trans shifts a lot at highway speeds. I am getting better gas mileage than you, though. I am 80% commuter and get 17-19 mpg at 70-mph. Drops quickly in town driving to 13. No major problems so far at 125,000 miles. Did have to change a leaky radiator, one side mirror, and a front wheel hub bearing. Otherwise no issues.

    I have a 460. I use regular gas - probably fine, since it's the same engine (and probably same tuning, based on identical performance numbers) as in some models of the sequoia and tundra, which are regular gas vehicles. No engine knocking from what I could detect.

      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +5

      I gave that a try when I first got mine. It resulted in a 10-15% reduction in gas mileage for me which is what a lot of people report. That negates the savings for me not to mention the extra carbon build up. They are tuned slightly different, the ECU just retunes it to retard detonation when it detects knocks or pings I believe.
